tbh it so baffles me when people whom I know in real life actually question what I mean when I say home they're like wait like at your dad's apartment? do you mean your moms house or your dad's? like I thought I had made it abundantly clear to every single person in my life that I do not intend to return to living at my Abusive Mother's house except for OCCASIONAL warranted sleepovers until I have bought it and she is gone from it for ever. but apparently I have not idk

I will say reading the other two books in the trilogy made me even more pissed off about how they shunted sophies beautiful character into something so small and normal for the movie. when I tell you she is mischievous as fuck. this poor girl spent her whole previous life making hats and struggled so much during the events of howl's moving castle because she was discovering what life could offer, and the enjoyable experience she could have if she worked to cultivate it for herself. she didnt feel like she deserved it but its draw was so strong, and so she didn't know what to do about it. in the following two books most of her interactions that we see are full of irritation and exasperation and cross tendency, but it is as clear as day that she is happier now than she ever was before.
in moments when she's described in the background the joy comes through—what came to mind for me was how she was struggling so hard during one of the final scary dramatic scenes of house of many ways to stop from giggling at howl's ridiculous tricks before he revealed them to the villain and rocked his shit. she knew before everyone else what he had pulled, and found real delight in watching it unfold. she often presents as cranky, but she's very smart and knows want she wants and loves having new things to do. that crankiness is a part of how she processes it all, but she is always obviously having the time of her life. howl manic pixie dream girled all over her and she flipped it and reversed it right back at him; it's why they come off so disorderly but work so well.
when they settled her down mousishly with howl at the end of the movie, kindly and decorously melting into his 'look at me I'm so hot and noble' aura like a trophy wife without ever even addressing aloud her magical ability, they signed the death warrant on the last vestiges of her true personality. they destroyed any signs of depth in either of them. I still love the movie but it's so sad to me that so many people only know the dreamy romance of the anxiously demure mouse sophie and the nobly tortured prodigy howl from the movie when the novel tells so much more beautiful and complex of a love story

sometimes I randomly think about the time a girl posted in this girls only Facebook group I’m in telling everyone how she broke up with her boyfriend and he lied saying that he lost the spare key she gave him, only to then break into her apartment when she wasn’t home and steal the cat they’d adopted while they were together, but then he denied having done this and she didn’t really have proof that he took the cat since he wouldn’t let her come into his place and look for it. And then another girl saw this post and knew her ex-boyfriend, and she was like “girl. I used to hook up with your mans back in xxxx and I still have his number. If you want, I’ll hit him up and get him to invite me back to his place and see if your cat’s there.” And the OP was like “bet.”
So this woman hit up homie dog, asked him out for drinks, went home with him, slept with him, and then woke up in the middle of the night and TOOK THE CAT. Like she had only said that she would confirm if the cat was there but then she took it upon herself to steal this woman’s cat back. Like she full on Trojan horsed this man and then hit up homegirl like “I got the goods. Where you wanna meet.” And then the two of them posted a photo of them together with the cat to the group.
And I just think women supporting women is so beautiful.
