Steve tries to get the bloodstains out of the original vest and, while he succeeds, it ruins the material. It ends up with pale, thin splotches and holes from the scrubbing. So Steve spends hours, days, weeks, carefully cutting the stitching, carefully taking the patches off the original vest. He buys a new one and sews them on. He is so careful to make it exactly the same.
When he gives back the new vest with the old patches, Eddies a little confused. Not just because there's no bloodstains anymore, but it doesn't have the ink or coffee stains. It doesn't have the weird ties from when he stitched one of the patches wrong.
Steve tries to play it off, act casual, but Eddie can see how much work Steve must have put into it. It's so obvious to him and he spends just as long trying to figure Steve out, trying to figure out the best thing he can do in return. He doesn't want it to be something quick and easy, he wants Steve to understand that he cares just as much about him. He wants to make him feel special too.
