8th recording/12th shared. Firstly, I have to thank @celilasart for allowing me to use one of her stunning artworks that was done for the HD Big Bang as the cover art. I love Sam's writing - it's so varied from the really sweet 'We're Already Married' to the amazing world building wip of 'The Dementor's Child' but this fic is in my top three drarry fics; there's so much that I love about it but the way that Draco's musings, development, how his journey is charted through difficult territory is just incredible and so thought-provoking with the issues raised.
I can tell that this one is going to have a lot of waffling which shows that it’s a fic that I return to time and again; although I know that I always miss some thought.
I remember recording this in January last year, having moved from sitting on the top of my laundry box in the studio flat, to cross-legged on the floor of the tiny junk/utility side room. I would often get pins and needles as I like to record chapters in one sitting and the last two are quite hefty in length. Often would have to pause my recording when I could hear the loos flushing of other flats due to the common waste pipe ^.^ This is the only multi-chaptered fic that I posted in one go as I like to post chapter by chapter but I think I had LB and KC going on at the same time, and I'd listened to it enough times that I was reasonably confident that I had caught most of the verbal errors. But I hadn’t understood the joys of audacity’s spectral editing so there’s quite a few mouth smacks that do make me twitch when I hear them.
What I think of as my Harry voice now didn't really form until two recordings later but I can tell that I had started looking into accents which I had previously avoided. I remember reading a comment on someone's podfic that the poster was glad, as a Scot that the reader hadn't attempted a bad Scottish accent but putting on accents is an easy way to make a voice distinguishable amongst a cast of many. I decided that if an accent is distinguishable even if it is bad, then I would take it and currently podficcing is my sandbox of play so people can opt to go play in someone else’s sandbox. I’m not sure why people continue to read/listen to something if they don’t enjoy it as if they’re being forced and not curators of their own experience
Neville's voice is the first time I tried to put on another British accent - remember slaps on the hand as a kid so I’m normally gurning before I try an accented voice. The accent I tried for Neville is homage to a lovely dinner lady that used to help me find stars in the primary school playground. I really adore the way Neville is portrayed; I do think it’s a really believable extension of my canon perception. That’s one of the joys I think of reading fanfic to see other people’s interpretation and how they build on canon; always really interesting of me since I’m not a fan of canon Hermione and Ron to see how well I gel with someone else’s depiction of them.
This was the first recording where they do feature quite a bit so I remember pulling a face as I didn't want my bias to come through unless written in the fic but it is during this fic that my Ron voice develop as the catchphrase that I use to get his voice originates here: 'I think it does matter.'
I did debate whether I should try and age up Draco's voice through the fic but dismissed that as it's been a long time since I have heard someone's voice go through puberty and was pretty sure that I would come a cropper and then scrap the project entirely. Also, then I would have to think of doing it for Harry and then Neville, and so on. I think Lucius' voice is the first time that I tried to put on a 'deeper voice' and lol I would always end up hacking like someone who has had their first cigar.
I have a terrible memory for voices unless it's a voice that I have used regularly as often I hear a voice when re-listening to a podfic and think oh, I don't remember this I should have used that in this other pod. The problem is that I often wing it so will use whatever occurs to me when recording and then just forget that I've done it that way. The number of times I read something in the wrong voice and then have to backtrack is stupidly off-the-wall. I've learnt a lot more editing-wise since I 'finished' this podfic and often I do itch to go back to redo something - particularly with the mouth smacks I hear and the slips in Draco's voice.
I didn't start to add music until a recording that I did for Wireless 2023 two months later but I think this podfic really benefits from that learning experience. I must have listened to it a few times before I knew how to add music and I think if the interludes are not too frequent then silence works well; but when you have a series of short scenes - those consecutive silence can be confusing/disconcert the listener i.e. me ^.^
You don't want music to distract from the prose but at the same time, it can quickly help the listener focus which is why I had different music bookending Regulus' letters to that for the general scene breaks. You have the slight heads up that you’re about to hear from Regulus. Choosing music for podfics is the worst part of podficcing for me; but here I was lucky since I've always loved Satie's Gnossiennes and knew one of them would fit the mood I wanted. I think I've used every single one in one podfic or another. They give such different moods depending on the listener and that lack of formal structure gives them an unsettled, sometimes ominous quality to me, particularly No 3 which I used here. I've always loved Mussorgsky since I was at primary school when it featured on one of those BBC 'Stop, Look, Listen' programme - have vague memories of being in PE where we had to pretend to be elephants walking, maybe to ‘Promenade?’ There's an understated elegance to his piano pieces particularly Reverie - which seemed right for Regulus imo.
I really love the gradual evolution of his relationship with Harry – the respect, understand and camaraderie. Sometimes, fics seem in a rush as if worried they’re going to lose the reader’s interest if the pairing don't get together early enough. Maybe they are more articulate than your usual teenager - no disrespect to teenagers but thinking back on my own inability to express myself a few decades ago - but doesn't mean to say that they wouldn't have those thoughts: the doubts, resentment, expectations imposed by society and adults around.
I’d never really given too much though to Regulus before this fic but the personality that Sam evokes is so vivid, full and alive through his letters. I actually got to use a voice that I rarely use, my ‘Hadrian’ voice that I found in my first podfic which I’m sharing so I can name it ^_^ I have a deep fondness for it as it’s probably the first time that I thought ‘doesn’t really sound too much like me’ and gave me confidence to experiment more.

I had a dream that I was suffering from burn out (which is entirely true) and dream me took something called an idea enhancement pill and all of a sudden a fic idea began to play out in dream me’s mind. And it was such a good idea that I managed to wake myself up to write the premise down
