This is just my headcanon 😭😭.
Marceline's scrap book describes them to be in love and I am a sucker for some kinda beauty and the beast trope so yeh.
And I headcanon this to be why Hudson wasn't there.

Hi, today I'm thinking about how "No Sympathy" is circled in green like Elise's jacket because she was too stressed out to properly comfort Marceline and Don't Trust Anyone is written in blue a similar shade to Marcy's outfit because after she lost all three of her parental figures we can see that that quickly became a leading life philosophy of hers.
