Final Fantasy IV: The installment every FF game SHOULD strive to be like
Hello, friends. Let me tell you about the most underrated installment in the series which near and dear to me because it was not only my introduction to Final Fantasy, it was my introduction to RPGs in general. It is the game the showcased the best of what Final Fantasy brought to gaming, or once did rather, and it is in my opinion the game every other one should have strived to be like... Final Fantasy IV aka Final Fantasy II in North America.
Tumblr media
FF7 gets a lot glory, honourable mentions, spin offs and a lot of games since its creation strive to be just like it if not inspired by it, but I think that the franchise is completely wrong when it comes to which game it should focus on being more like. FF4 is the one all FF games should strive to be like because it really is a gem. The amount work, time, effort and love put into it not only shows, it’s stood the test of time. Even now, you can replay the most primitive version of it (the SNES) and it will still be impressive even compared most modern original games now. Yes, it has modern remakes and a few spinoffs though it still doesn’t get the recognition or appreciation it so rightfully deserves. And here is my case as to why...
Note that there are spoilers ahead!
youtube
Number one, it had the best music. Like I said, you can play the most primitive version of this game and it will still impress you. For a Super Nintendo game, the music sounds like it was played by an actual orchestra. The prelude alone sounds heavenly and Golbez’ theme sounds like something out of the underworld (more on him later). While the modern music on more modern consoles of FF are nice, none come close to the quality FF4 had. It was more than just about giving each character their own theme song. Every single piece suited the setting and mood it was made for.
Tumblr media
Number two, it had the best protagonist: Cecil Harvey. Ever since Cloud appeared, the trend of FF was to have weird or broody kids play hero. Cecil was a real man who did not play hero. He IS a hero. He is a leader, brave, intelligent, responsible, selfless, kind, faithful and doesn’t need to be convinced to do the right thing. He just does it. In fact, that is exactly how Cecil’s entire journey began: with an act of honour. When he realized his king was evil after being tricked into burning the village of Mist to the ground, he had enough and began his rebellion then and there. Also, he inspired others to join him in doing right. I admit Cecil left a big pair of shoes to fill, but I wish more creators in FF would at least try to make their protagonists more like him.
Tumblr media
Number three, it had the best antagonists. Yes, I meant for that to be plural because unlike all other FF games, Final Fantasy didn’t have just one main antagonist. It had two. The most obvious one was Golbez who just visually alone is serious, frightening and menacing. He isn’t a pretty boy at all. In fact, I even imagine his voice sounding like that of Darth Vader’s. As said before, his theme resonates with evil. He is also the perfect foil and adversary to Cecil because he’s also a leader, relentless, bold, daring, sadistic, cruel and competent. On top of that, he’s a tragic villain done right because it turns out that he was mind controlled this whole time since he was a teenager. Yet, even when he is freed, he still behaved like a badass and even took accountability for his misdeeds. Golbez knew the world would not forgive or pity him that easily nor should it, so he decided to face penance like a man and start a new life on the moon.
Tumblr media
The other main antagonist who was memorable is Kain Highwind who also happens to be Cecil’s best friend and foster brother. What also sets him apart from all other FF main antagonists is that you only fight against him once and then, for most of the game, he fights alongside you only to betray you without a warning at the worst possible time. Another thing that sets him apart is that he’s not a tragic villain. He’s a corrupted hero. He is a good guy who made bad decisions and caved into his jealous towards Cecil making him susceptible to being mind controlled. In other word, Golbez played up that which was already there. And like him, Kain accepted that a simple “I’m sorry” was not enough to make up for the things he did and you respect that about him. I mean, he almost killed Rosa and he loved her (more on this later). There has not been a main antagonist like Kain since.
Tumblr media
Number four, it had the best romance. A lot of the romances in FF these days are not healthy nor do they feel like they make any sense especially because the characters tend to be underage. The last believable romance I saw was between Zidane and Garnet, and even then, it cannot compare to the love between Cecil and Rosa. They not only have great chemistry together, they’re an item from the beginning and should I also mention that FF4 did a love triangle first? Moreover, it showed it accurately in how they are not fun or cute. They always end with someone getting hurt. You see, Kain was also in love with Rosa and tried to pursue her, but Rosa only loves Cecil. Moreover, though she needed saving a couple of times, she is also just as much there for Cecil. She is his greatest support, believer and is as every bit as stubborn when it comes to doing what is right as he is. Plus, she is the best healer in FF series in general as she is the only one who ever managed to learn Curaja (aka Cure 4) making her and Cecil a power couple. By the way, Cecil and Rosa got married, had a son together and are still going strong. How many FF romances went THAT far?
Tumblr media
Number five, it had the best airships. The airships have always been a staple for FF, but you don’t get to use many all at the same time like you did in FF4. You got an airship that had a crane that helped you carry the hovercraft while flying, an airship that had a drill which helped you dig your way out of a mountain from the inside out, and airship that literally takes you to the moon and back. And the best part is, every time you got new one, you still had the others in your garage. I admit that FF5 also had multiple transportation vehicles that stayed in your inventory, but none of them impressed me the way FF4′s did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Number six, it had the biggest and best set of worlds to explore. As well as having many airships to travel with, it had many worlds to explore. It had the usual overworld, but there was also a vast underworld to see. Moreover, the moon itself is a whole world to explore on its own not one dungeon that comes and go. Most FF games only have one world to explore or one at a time to explore, then there’s no going back. FF4 was not like that. Every world stayed intact and was there to continue being explored as the game went on.
Tumblr media
Number seven, it had the best side quests. Like I said, the multiple worlds offered so much to explore and what you would find did not disappoint you. It had side quests that not only added to the experience, but also to the story as though you’re meant to take time to see what lies beyond. And everything you find is genuinely useful from Summons to Weapons. You’re left with the genuine impression that if you don’t complete these quests, you’re missing out. I admit FF5 and FF6 also had great side quests, but they did not surprise me the way FF4 did. I mean, how often do you get a side quest that lets you find out for yourself that not only is your friend still alive, you have a hand in saving him?
Tumblr media
Number eight, it had the best story. The most important part of any RPG is its plot and FF4 did not fail to deliver. It’s story plays out like a TV series that you could binge watch over and over again. In fact, if one FF game SHOULD be adapted and faithfully to a TV series it should be this one. The story and character development is just so well done and really draws you in. Did you know that FF4 was the first video game that actually made me cry? When Tellah died, I am not ashamed to say that I cried and not just because I was a kid who felt bad for a character. When Tellah died, you really mourned for him because you got to care about him and what he went through. And I am grateful to this series for making me feel that way because it taught how to write tragedy right.
Tumblr media
Number nine, it has been remade again and again, yet still always winds up still being good. I admit it translates best to being 2D and cartoony, but even the CGI 3D version on the DS was was still great and the voice actors selected were pretty much how we imagined them to sound in our minds. More importantly, the remakes always stay faithful to the source material which tells me that deep down, the creators know how perfect FF4 is.
In short, FF7 may be the franchise’s cash cow, but FF4 is its masterpiece. And I can say openly without shame that upon learning that it is getting yet another remake, I am considering purchasing it just to play it because I MISS playing it over and over again. This game not only shaped my childhood. It helped me in my writing.
Anyway, this is all just my opinion on FF4. I would like to know yours and if you disagree, which game was the best in your opinion and why? Thanks for reading and as always, stay safe.
PS: If you haven’t played FF4, play it especially if you are an FF fan. You won’t be disappointed.

Note
Alright jerk give me everything divisible by 3.
sorry i cant do math
3. Do you feel more connected to the moon or the sun?
hmm i think the moon. as much as i want to become light, the sun is far too harsh for my hypersensitive eyes. the moon on the other hand is a beautiful maiden who illuminates me with the softest of lights
6. When’s the last time you felt like you were floating?
uhh i get like this weird vertigo or something every once in a while and it feels like that, kinda. dunno when the last time was tho
9. What’s a smell that reminds you of home?
home smells neutral. home smells like nothing. the closest i can think of is this carpet cleaning powder my mom used one time while i was playing ff4 and now every time i smell that i have vivid memories of the game and also the room she was cleaning
12. Name a song that makes you feel ethereal.
oh ethereal huh? anesthetize by porcupine tree. i think that counts.
15. Talk about something exciting or good that happened to you this year.
i made friends! with girls! and i bought some shirts in girl sizes ! and theyre putting 1 million needles in my face ! this is an exciting year. plus i might actually get back into writing for the first time since like 2013 or 14. fucking unfathomable
18. Do you believe dreams have meanings or are they completely random?
i believe dreams are just your mind processing information. that can have meaning. that can be important. i dont think the two are mutually exclusive.
21. Do you believe in mermaids?
god i wish i could be so detached from reality to believe in mermaids
24. Are you more of a hopeless romantic or realist?
okay i am a realist in every sense EXCEPT romance in which case i am extremely hopeless
27. Have you ever written a love letter?
ive written a love NOTE, does that count? it was shit. shite. didnt work. embarrassing.
30. What do you do to feel at peace?
thunderstorm generator > calming video game ost music > turn out lights > reread seifuku no vampiress lord. sometimes the ost music has thunderstorm sounds included so i get double. sometimes its even raining in real life. also depending on the phase of my life i may also just go out to the other room and play the piano a little. sad songs always make me feel peaceful.

Final Fantasy in Review
I’m feeling a bit nostalgic today so here’s a review of some Final Fantasy games. These are just reads off of my personal experiences with them. Might contain a few spoilers here and there but if there are some they’re minor.
FINAL FANTASY - Stock fantasy story. Classic but also unremarkable and relatively short. Establishes a lot of the franchise’s hallmarks and is generally a good game. I like the red mage’s hat.
FINAL FANTASY II - All I remember about this one is that pretty much everybody dies. Also something about a gopher? First game with a chocobo in it so that’s exciting.
FINAL FANTASY III - This one got weird? I remember the early plot just being all over the place. Also do not like cloud of darkness’s design honestly. First appearance of the moogle and advent of the Job/Class system. I did not finish this game.
FINAL FANTASY IV - Just a bunch of redemption arcs in a trench coat + a kinda cheesy love triangle. That’s about it. This was one of my first video games ever and is still a strong favorite. Kain is so fucking stupid he’s an armor clad brick wall with the mental and moral fortitude of a single pine nut. I love him.
FINAL FANTASY V - I remember this game being long af but that might just be cause I was kind of young when I played it. Nice story. Lots of comic relief but not so much that it becomes overbearing. Also first explicit case of blatant furry bait what with roping in a whole wolfman species. Never got around to snooping out the last two pianos.
FINAL FANTASY VI - The overrated one that I like more. Also among the first video games I ever played. It was kind of formative for young me. The sound track fuckin slaps and Searching for Friends is one of the things that got me into writing music. Good story and focus on characters, plus a steampunk fantasy aesthetic that appeals to everything I adore. My soul for a solid remake that can break away from the shitty iOS assets.
FINAL FANTASY VII - The overrated one that I like less. This one has the same energy to me as LoZ ocarina of time. It was a lot of firsts for the franchise, paving the way into 3D graphics, giving us more diverse casts, and further breaking away from standard fantasy elements. And because of this, it wins the hearts of a lot of fans. I didn’t really care for it but obviously many many others did and do still. There was also a movie I think?
FINAL FANTASY VII CRISIS CORE - Never played personally but have seen a fair bit. Gets a mention for its popularity in the wake of its parent game. [Insert “RIP but I’m different” meme]
FINAL FANTASY VIII - Shitty romance novel. Better yet, a shitty romance novel spread across a million PC disks because nothing in life can be easy. Game had an aesthetic that was too edgy powerful what with Squall’s crop top jacket and pretty boy scar, plus the Empress running around looking like a Padme Amidala cosplay. Too absorbed in that one card came to pursue the story.  Also gunblade?? The most ridiculous thing. Fucking rad but falls apart the instant you think about it for more than six seconds how in the whole ass fuck????
FINAL FANTASY IX - I never played nine and I feel like I should because people I’ve spoken to say its pretty good. Zidane has a tail like goku and there was a black mage there also that people seem to like.
FINAL FANTASY X - A blur of CGI Cut scenes and questionable voice acting. Found myself frustrated by the linearity of the plot line. Also found said plot kind of confusing to untangle in places. Might just be salty cause I’m bad at blitzball... Very anime. Seymore’s battle theme slaps as much as his hair do. Also more furry bait.
FINAL FANTASY X-2 - The meninists or whatever don’t like this one because the protag is a girl. It’s a spin off and I never really played it but they gave Yuna a gun so how bad can it be?
FINAL FANTASY XI - An MMO. I feel no need to continue. Never really played it or looked into it, so can’t give a strong vibe.
FINAL FANTASY XII - Baa Baa Black Sheep have you any actually kind of compelling plot set in a deep and well fleshed out world? Strays from the mold a bit too much in places but was still a pretty solid game.
FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - Another spin off and one that I’ve never played. Takes place in the same world as FF12 and gets a mention here because I’m always a fan of the world building done for Ivalice.
FINAL FANTASY XIII - This is where I started to fall out of the franchise a bit. I never played this one but The battle theme was good and that one guy looks like he probably listens to 21 pilots a lot. iirc there was some nonsense going on on the moon? So I’m gonna call it a sleeker, sexier clone of FF4.
FINAL FANTASY XIV - Another MMO. I actually did play this briefly right when it first came out. If you recall the time when it was apparently so bad that SquareEnix had to take it back and try again? Seems like most of that’s cleared up now tho. There’s an update soon I think.
FINAL FANTASY XV - I know nothing about this other than that the boys are back in town. Also all the shit mobile spin offs everybody’s getting ads for around here.
DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY - SSB but Final Fantasy. Not the kind of games you play for the plot, but was overall a decent game with interesting mechanics. Was genuinely fun to play. Too bad the latest installment was such a step backward.
FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES - Said to have a “Small Cult Following” of which I am a part. This game was good, step to me. The music was amazing, the story was interesting (if poorly paced in a couple of places), and the setting was wonderfully put together. The sequels are... less good with a steady decline per installment, but alas what can one do?

Storied Gaming:  The Theory - Squall is Dead
Today I would like to introduce to you the first of the three theories I would like to cover.  Just to give an understanding of what I will do for a format, I will be giving a small introduction of the theory, give a rundown of the theory, say what I liked about it, and what I didn’t.  So, without further adieu, on with the show!
Final Fantasy 8 was a very divisive game back in the late 2000’s.  You had the crowd that adored the chemistry of Squall and Rinoa, that were excited to see the Leon segments, and loved playing Tetra Master (later to be known as Triple Triad for Final Fantasy 14).  Then you had the detractors that despised the Guardian Force (GF) system, the Draw system, Selphie, and how the game ended.  Wait, how did the game end again?  Oh right, it ended with the characters being sent into a dimension which was the result of a Sorceress who managed to create a temporal compression.  Wait, what?  How does that make sense?  Perhaps it doesn’t.  Perhaps, as the theory we are about to look into, all of this didn’t actually happen, and that we are experiencing a death dream from Squall himself.
The Theory’s Rundown
The theory is called Squall is Dead.  It states that at the end of Disk 1, after the confrontation of both Seifer and Sorceress Edea, of whom the latter was to be assassinated by the members of SeeD, Squall dies as a result of Edea throwing Ice related magic into his chest and the subsequent fall from the parade float she was riding.  From there, the rest of the narrative is Squall’s final moments, trying to piece together some unresolved questions and issues in his mind, so that he may pass away peacefully in his resolve.
Some of the examples used for this theory stem from the groundwork of the world as we knew it that wasn’t shown to us until Disk 2.  We are then introduced to the concepts of the Moombas, their life cycle being the final stage for the Shumi, the Shumi people themselves, NORG’s ownership of the Balamb Garden, and the fact that Gardens can fly.  Then the identity of Sorceress Edea, the powers and understanding of the title of Sorceress, the origin of Ultimecia, and Rinoa’s connection to the powers.  As well as Pandora, the Lunar Cry, that the monsters of the world came from the moon.  And finally the relationship of the characters themselves, of how they were all from the same orphanage and found themselves brought back together because of the events of Final Fantasy 8.
Ultimately the theory and the narrative come to a head when it comes to the final cutscene of the game.  What we see as Squall reflects on his first encounter with Rinoa, is his mind trying desperately to recall those precious moments.  They start to degrade, as we see in the cutscene, where the scenery of that moment, and Rinoa herself, become blurry, disfigured, incomprehensible.  That is the moment that Squall’s life had come to an end, that his mind finally fades.  We see other images and scenes flash by, some more obscured and distorted like the rest until we are faced with a ... well faceless Squall for a frame, followed by him looking upward on his knees until it fades to white.  At this point, we are led to understand that his mental state had finally ceased, and he had properly died.
How Did I Like It?
I will give the creators of this site a lot of credit.  I could not have gone into so much detail into everything from Disk 2 to the end of the game, and attempt to make a credible case.  The inclusion of the Shumi and Moombas did seem a little out of place to me at first, and to be honest the idea of Time Compression being the reason behind Ultimecia’s goals seemed far too ludicrous to be believed for a Final Fantasy game.  It really does explain the end cinematic too when you look at it from just a glance.
The Problems With It.
So when I said that Time Compression was too ludicrous an idea for Final Fantasy?  Well, the thing about that is that they have messed with the idea of time alteration before, and in a Final Fantasy game as well.  In the very first Final Fantasy, the villain Garland - who later turns into the archdemon Chaos - devises a plan to create a sort of temporal paradox, where he would send Four Fiends of the Elements into the future so that they can send him back into the past, thus supposedly creating a cycle where he simply cannot die. So we can't fully dismiss the idea of Chronomancy used in such an extreme.
As it comes to the Moombas, the Shumi, the origins of the monsters and everything else the theory tries to go against, it can be all summed up by the contrivance of this statement:  It’s a Final Fantasy game.  The reason Squall’s ice spike wound healed was because of the curing magic they would have employed before getting into the prison.  The Shumi and Moombas are really no different than other things that come out of nowhere, like the Namingways in FF4, or just Moogles in general, though, I concede that a giant Shumi living in the lower levels of the Balamb Garden did seem to come out of nowhere.
What about them having been in an orphanage together and not remembering each other?  It’s already been established that prolonged exposure to a GF makes you forget certain segments of memory due to their need to inhabit the host’s mind in order to function.  Selphie herself explains how she had junctioned a GF to herself when she was younger, but she cannot remember the details of that GF or what happened to it either.  Given Balamb's reliance on the GFs over other gardens, it would be safe to assume that Quistis, Squall, Zell and Seifer's memories were affected greatly because of it.
Does it also explain the final cutscenes?  That is its own can of worms, and I’ll offer a link here to give the full story of what happened.  Essentially the SeeDs tempted Ultimecia’s plan to compress time itself so that she can possess a Sorceress in the past, as she resides in the future.  What we see in the cutscenes with Squall is him falling into the wrong Time Loop - a possibility that is referenced by Quistis prior to his scenes - and later becoming lost, only trying hard to focus on Rinoa and where to find her, and ultimately failing this.
To me, the main issue of the story being a death dream is a hard one to swallow.  While it does present itself as an interesting take on a narrative, and very experimental of an idea for a Final Fantasy title, one of which was completely littered with experimental designs, at the same time it’s an ending that wouldn’t be fulfilling to the player.  What would have been the point of looking into the death dream of a failed hero?  Another game comes to mind that would have done the idea properly.  Eternal Sonata, for example, uses the death dreams of Chopin in such a way that it interweaves his musical talents, as well as the societal structure of Chopin’s era, on display in the game and through the narrative.  In a strange way, it could open up young gamers into a classical world they would have otherwise have overlooked.  What benefit would there have been in the case of Squall dying?
I enjoyed working on this theory and talking about it.  It’s definitely worth a discussion and focuses on something I want to talk about more when it comes to Storied Gaming, that being the story of the game.  I do have two more theories planned to talk about, but I wonder if there aren’t any others you would like for me to cover.  Let me know in the comments below, and if you enjoyed this or any of my other work, please don’t hesitate to reblog down below.  Until next time!

Podcast: Welsh tropicalia and endless jams
Tumblr media
This week dipped into the sounds of pseudo-summer, with an offbeat exotica spotlight at the halfway mark--Cuban tres via Canada, Welsh tropicalia, and more sunny Canuck samba from the Shangs and Expwy.
Outside of that, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois go cosmic, L’eclair and Minami Deutsch go the distance, and the first hour takes on more beats than you can shake a stick at.
