Brought mum to try the Japanese foods at Tokyo Shokudo (東京食堂) located in Northpoint City. This restaurant chain is halal certified so all the pork ingredients had been replaced with chicken. Browsing through the menu, I picked their recommended tempura rice dish while I chose ramen for mum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Signature Tendon (特製天丼) priced at S$13.90++ came piled with an assortment of fried battered prawn, fish, vegetables and a sheet of nori or seaweed. As I lifted out some of the crispy tempura items to get to the rice below, there it is, a hidden fried egg still warm with oozing egg yolk! Mixed the yolk into the rice and proceeded to devour the donburi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The portion in mum’s Chicken Cha Shu Yuzu Ramen (鶏チャーシューラーメン) seems underwhelming considering it cost the same S$13.90++. Unfortunately, mum didn’t take to the ramen with modern twist. She found the yuzu and ramen combination flavours strange so she didn’t finish her meal. :(

Midnight Diner is Food for the SOUL!
Midnight Diner is Food for the SOUL!
I’ve recently got hooked on a hidden gem of a TV series. It’s a Japanese slice of life drama called ‘Shinya Shokudo’ which translates as Midnight Diner. It started in 2009 and five seasons have been made so far, with Seasons 4 and 5 having a slightly different title: Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories. These recent seasons were produced by Netflix and this is where you can find the show. But be…

Hi....If you don't mind, can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
Hi! Thank you for asking ❤️ On general (no specific order):
Coraline, Neil Gaiman (book)
I read it for the first time in elementary school. I completely fell in love with the story. I was young and I remember being quite impressed with it (for a children's book, it's quite shocking huh). Years later I reread the book and felt again as if I was reading it for the first time. It's been my favorite book for a long time. I always read it every now and then.
Friends (TV series)
My comfort show. I watch it at any time to have fun or just pass the time. I've watched it so many times that I know almost everything about this series. I can talk about it for hours or write a 10,000-word thesis about it.
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (manga)
My favorite manga of my collection. My little paper treasure, as I like to call it. I really like this story, it has everything I enjoy in a piece of media (fantasy, mystery, plot twists, angst, well-developted characters, etc). I really wanted to erase my memories and read it as if it were the first time again. It is breathtaking.
One Piece (anime)
Despite having seen Naruto first, One Piece is somehow more memorable for me. Whether due to its long duration or the complexity of the character/world build, One Piece is a remarkable work that I always talk about when talking about favorites.
Shinya Shokudo (manga, TV series)
Talking about Shinya Shokudo is not easy. Whether it's the manga or the TV series, it touches me on several levels. A feeling of nostalgia for something I didn't experience, coziness and tranquility. There are few media that bring me such nice feelings. It's simple but touching. Even though I have zero kitchen skills, I love seeing Master cooking different dishes and the customers telling their unique stories.
Hajime no Ippo (anime, manga)
It's a lifetime series, published since long before I was born. I've been reading it for so many years already! I always say I need to see its ending before I die. It's something that I simply have as a goal in life lol Seeing Ippo reaching the end of his story. (Mori sensei please be healthy, okay?)
World Trigger (anime, manga)
Amazing story, amazing characters, amazing world building. Everything about World Trigger is amazing to me. I'm a big fan of science fiction and World Trigger delivers everything and much more. The only sad thing about it is the very slow pace for the story to progress, but we have to be grateful that even with health problems, Ashihara sensei keeps going. I'll always support him and wish to see the end of WT someday.
Supernatural (TV series)
I watched it for the first time when I was a kid and it scared the hell out of me. Ever since then I've been watching SPN from time to time. I love the cheap drama and the quirky stories. Although, for me the quality of the series has deteriorated a lot over the seasons and I don't understand the fandom tbh. But that's another topic I guess.
Tokyo Revengers (manga)
Tokyo Revengers started as an obsession and has remained as a favorite. Time travel stories are always a must-read / must-watch for me and TR knows what they're doing with it. I love protagonists who at the beginning are nothing, but over time manage to develop into someone better in order to achieve their goals. Also, Mikey has become a very imporant character for me, I can say that in the end, he was pretty much the reason why I read the whole thing.
*I didn't include movies because I would need a whole list to fit all of them, there are so many that I would like to mention.
**Honorable mentions: mushishi, natsume yuujinchou, link click, nge, golden kamuy, pandora hearts, yu yu hakusho, dorohedoro, hxh, naruto, bsd, clamp's works, junji ito's works.

Chicken KATSU(breaded chicken) Set Meal with Large Rice + Stewed Vegetables at KISARAGI-TEI in Sakurashinmachi If you're wondering if the food is good enough to merit the crowdfunding against the relocation, it wasn't. The large portion of rice was large, but as you can see from the photo, it was a mess of rice that was lumpy in places and not tasty. The chicken KATSU KOROMO (=coating of the chicken KATSU) was thin, hard, and tasteless. The “KATSU" looked like it was made by a foreigner who didn't know what a “KATSU" was. The chicken KATSU was not a strong enough side dish, so I added some stewed vegetables, but it was also tasteless with a lot of KONJAK. All in all, it was tasteless. I should have gone to “MEOTO Shokudo" diagonally across the street.

Day 21 Activities
Today we dive more into old Kyoto for some pretty historic stuff, Kiyomizudera and Gion District! Kiyomizudera: I thought it was cool. The walk from the station to here was pretty unfun but once we got there, things cooled down. There was a thing we did where we walked downstairs and through the womb of Kannon, it was totally pitch black! There was also a place with three different streams of water and each stream meant something good like longevity and love and other stuff. We were told to only drink from one stream because if we drank from two or three, Kannon would think we were greedy and we wouldn't get the wish. I chose the middle stream and it was a fun experience. The crowds were present here but it wasn't as bad as a place like Dotonbori or Kinkaku-ji. Pretty fun. Afterwards, we explored the Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka streets and broke for lunch. I took this time to grab lunch and buy souvenirs for the family. Lunch: Everywhere is crowded and busy, so let's roll the dice and walk into Kyoto Bistro, which is basically the hotel restaurant for the nearby Hyatt. Still a restaurant, so I'll rate it. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries with some apple pie for desert. I know, ordering Japanese burgers is a risk (thanks Brisk Stand...), but let's just give it a chance! It was actually pretty good. The bun had poppy seeds I think? The fries were nice as well. The apple pie was alright but I've had better. I gotta give it an 8/10 overall. Gion District: This was a shock. Maybe it was because of the time we went (the buffer zone between lunch and dinner), maybe it was the fact that it was a Sunday, I don't know. Either way, it was barren and I was expecting the worst crowds of the trip. I didn't see any geisha or any rabid tourists taking photos of geisha. It was just a street. Before we went and saw a dance by a geisha-in-training, I stopped and got some hot cocoa at a small cafe. The dance took way less than I thought in terms of time, there were only 2 songs? I was expecting an hour long but it only took 10 minutes or so. I wish I could've skipped this, but then again, you never know what you'll experience in a location until you go there. Tokka Saikan: My first restaurant for dinner (this was spur of the moment as I was going to go to Menbaka Fire Ramen but it fell through) is Tokka Saikan, a Chinese restaurant on the banks of the Kamo River that features the oldest active elevator in Japan. I ordered fried shrimp, spring rolls and corn soup and the portions were huge! I almost didn't finish it all. I really wanted peking duck but it was too expensive. Seems fun, but the food didn't have a lot of flavor, especially the shrimp. I felt like this could have been a skip. 7/10. Y's Burger: This was pretty interesting experience. The chef is going to California soon to learn more about burgers which is exciting. The burger I received was good and had very melty cheese but I'm taking a point off for having unexpected sauce on it. Booooo. I liked Kyoto Bistro better but it still gets an 8/10. We're one week into the Kyoto leg of the trip, so let's go ahead and look at the restaurant leaderboard! Just as a note, I'm keeping Kyoto and Tokyo's restaurants separate. Fu-ka: 10/10 Hanamaruken Namba Hozenji: 10/10 Dining + Cafe & Bar Uruu: 10/10 Kouyouen: 10/10 CoCo Ichibanya: 9/10 Maeda Coffee: 9/10 Steakland: 9/10 Que Pasa: 9/10 Ittottei: 8/10 Kyoto Bistro: 8/10 Sereno Shokudo: 8/10 Cafe de 505: 8/10 Ebisugawa Gyoza: 8/10 Y's Burger: 8/10 Tokka Saikan: 7/10 Sato: 6/10

Tokyo Gardens
Today was Green Day, and Tokyo Gardens were free.
First stop: Mukojima Hyakkaen (hundred-flower garden). Lots of flowers. Notice the Sky Tree in the background.
Tumblr media
Stopped at a super old mochi cafe that Gerbs found. The mochi was okay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Kiyosumi Garden. There was this island thingy.
Tumblr media
Lunch at Freeman Shokudo. The rib was amazing!! Beer was good as well: citrusy IPA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Old Furukawa Garden was packed with people who wanted to walk through the rose garden, which we skipped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rikugien is highly rated, but we find the pond to be too big. I think this is the right picture, but I'm not sure.
Tumblr media
Finally, Koishikawa Korakuen, right by the Tokyo Stadium.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, they all look pretty similar. I think I prefer flower gardens to these.

Toranomon Todaka: Chef's Counter Washoku Course 1
Tumblr media
There are many restaurants in Tokyo where reservations cannot be taken, and where the reservation slots are not available for a certain number of years. One of them is "Shokudo Todaka" in Gotanda. A friend of mine went "Toranomon Todaka," which opened last spring as its third branch at the beginning of this year and got a reservation for us!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
