Yay for upsetting someone by setting boundaries!
Yay for being overstimulated at work by whinging kids!
Yay for doughnuts (genuine)
Yay for having to bite my tongue when a customer wanted my opinion on "what JK Rowling did wrong"!
Yay for being tired and sad and feeling more like a nondescript gelatinous blob than a person for *checks notes* two weeks!

🐻‍❄️ cooking with vernon
vernon x gn! reader | fluff | 200 words | warnings: food
Tumblr media
“NONIE! PLEASE. I NEED THE BUTTER. STOP TRYING TO EAT IT WITH THE TOMATOES!”
Your shrill voice stopped Vernon right in his tracks just as he was about to swipe the tomato in the softened butter. Giving you a deadpan look, he slowly puts the tomato back down.
Both of you had been trying to decide what to eat for dinner. Vernon wanted burgers, and you wanted doughnuts. Hence, the best date night idea was born. You decided that since brioche burger buns and doughnuts had similar ingredients, why not try to make both within the comfort of your own home.
It sounded like a great idea at first. However, you underestimated your boyfriend’s love of weird food combinations. So far, as you were preparing the dough, Vernon had eaten tomatoes covered in jam, lettuce covered in jam, onions covered in ketchup, and cheese covered in ketchup. If he continued, you wouldn’t have any ingredients left.
Deciding that enough was enough, you put him to work preparing the burger patties. (You did make sure to keep a close eye on him in case he decided to try the raw meat). Regardless, the rest of the preparation went off without a hitch. Watching Vernon intensely concentrate on frying the patties with flour and weird food combinations smeared all over his apron was definitely one of your new favourite sights. And the cute small smiles he sent over your way every time he flipped the patties made your heart do flips.
Soon, your dinner had been prepared. Burgers (some lacking tomatoes and lettuce), and jelly filled doughnuts lined your dining table. After taking some mandatory photos, you looked up. To your horror, Vernon had deconstructed a burger and was putting the ingredients in a doughnut that he had cut in half.
Noticing your horrified gaze, Vernon just gave you a cheeky grin before shoving the doughnut burger in his mouth. He chewed for a while and nodded, giving you a thumbs up. Shaking your head, you laughed, resigned to your fate of having a boyfriend who loved weird food combinations. Afterall, if he didn’t try these weird food combinations, was he really your Vernon?

Making this trek wasn't just for Mah Ze Dar's brioche doughnuts wasn't worth it - considering she could have just as easily stopped in Midtown to achieve the same goal, but last minute shopping simply had to be done. Simple, yet expensive gifts were easy to find. And the lights here during the holidays took all of her worries away. Colorful, beautiful, relaxing. Finishing the last bite of her doughnut and wiping at her face, she stood - nearly making a mess of herself and walking into another passerby. Clearing her throat, she put on a polite, yet tight smile. "Excuse me. That's my bad. Should have looked where I was stepping -- You look in a hurry, are you?"

Strawberry Jelly and Vanilla Cream Brioche Doughnuts with Lilac Sugar
Lilac Sugar:
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup fresh lilac petals
1 vanilla bean seeds removed
Doughnuts:
1¼ cups warm milk
2 Tbsp. active dry yeast
1 Tbsp. granulated sugar
6 Tbsp. butter softened/lightly melted
1 egg
3½ cups all purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
Strawberry Jelly:
1 quart fresh or frozen strawberries diced
¼ cup coconut or granulated sugar
2 Tbsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. vanilla bean seeds removed
Cream:
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1 Tbsp. powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla bean seeds removed (or 2 vanilla)
½ tsp. flaky sea salt
Lilac Sugar:
In a bowl, combine the sugar with the lilacs and vanilla bean seeds. Pour the sugar into a glass jar and store at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. The longer it sits, the more flavor the sugar will have.
Doughnuts:
In a large mixing bowl (I like to use my stand mixer), combine the warm milk with the yeast and sugar. Allow the mixture to sit 5-10 mins or until the mix is foamy and smells like bread.
To the bowl, add the butter and egg, mix a little to combine and then add 3 cups flour and the salt. Knead the dough using a dough hook or your hands until the dough comes together and is smooth, about 3 minutes with a mixer and 5-10 by hand. If the dough seems too sticky, add the remaining  ½ cup flour. The dough should come together, but be slightly sticky to touch. Grease a large bowl and place the dough ball inside. Cover the bowl and let rise in a warm place while you work on the jelly, at least 15 minutes.
To make the jelly, combine the strawberries, sugar, lemon juice and vanilla in a small sauce pot. Bring the mixture to a boil and then cook over high heat, mashing the strawberries as they cook down until the jelly is thick, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely before mixing with the cream.
To fry the doughnuts, line 2 baking sheets with parchment. Lightly flour a work surface and roll out the dough to a ½ -inch thickness. Using doughnut or cookie cutters, cut out 1½ -inch-diameter rounds. Arrange the doughnuts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving at least 1 inch between doughnuts. Cover the doughnuts loosely with plastic wrap while the oil heats.
In a heavy-bottomed large pot or deep fryer, heat at least 2 inches of oil until a deep-fry thermometer registers 350 degrees F. Working in batches, use a slotted metal spoon or spatula to carefully place the doughnuts in the hot oil. Fry, flipping once, until light golden brown,1 to 2 minutes per side. When done, transfer to a wire rack to cool. Make sure to return the oil to 350 degrees F. between batches. Let the doughnuts cool completely before filling.
To make the cream, add the heavy whipping cream to a large mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer, whip the cream until stiff peaks form. Stir in the powdered sugar and vanilla. Add the cold jelly and gently fold it into the cream to create swirls.
Spoon the jelly and cream into a pastry bag fitted with a tip or just use a ziplock bag with the corner snipped off. Pierce the base of each cooled doughnut with piping tube and pipe a little filling into each doughnut. Generously sprinkle each doughnut with lilac sugar.

the other night I went on a first and very obvious last date with this guy I met on hinge, and then made the impulsive decision to drive out to my friend's house who lives 45 minutes away from me and slept over and had a really good time. granted, now I'm kind of sick as fuck but I was quite proud of myself for doing that. It's not like the date was bad because he was a red flag, but it was just hella awkward. even on terms of a first date the conversation seemed super forced, and when he asked me out again after the dinner he was like "do you wanna get lunch tomorrow?" BRO????? WE ALREADY SAW EACH OTHER... long story short we have stopped talking. however! one thing that came out of that date was me going over to my friend's place because although fairly short I've never slept over because she lives so far, and I hate driving. so we watched some netflixs, I talked about the date, I had some of their leftover tangsuyuk and then in the morning we had mcdonalds and I got half a dozen brioche doughnuts and a basque cheesecake. I also drove back home and didn't hit anybody which was a really big feat for me. I look back on the weekend and I still remember having fun and that's what life is all about
