I think watching so many Bernadette Banner (& friends) dress historian videos has spoiled me.

I keep trying to figure out the reasoning behind Astarion's white shirt frilly thing, or his....chaps? Is he wearing leather assless chaps over linen trousers? To relax in??? Why?????

Why are all the Super Fancy Elaborate clothes so.... Like That? Is it just a wealth thing? "Look upon my yards of brocade, and my sleeves made of three different fabrics, and weep with envy, peasant" cause that actually makes sense

But the colors look so weird sometimes! And I swear half the things are just leather, which would feel awful against your skin and they look uncomfortable, and--

Anyway, it took me like 2 months of trying to figure out the practical reasons behind the (more than one!) assless chaps design to remember that Baldur's Gate 3 is a video game.

So I'm doing an Astarion origin run and I'm not very far into it yet but it's been really interesting to me from a character work perspective. I'm trying to RP him as himself from a non-origin run. Like, take the guy who tries to sleep with you and gives approval for doing all kinds of shitty little things and can't think ahead etc, and put him in a situation where he's the leader now.

There are definitely some situations where I don't think he'd say any of the PC dialogue options, but I've been doing my best.

Anyway, the character dynamics that are coming out are not what I expected going in!

Gale: Astarion thinks he's annoying as shit and leaves him at camp.

Lae'zel: Astarion thinks she's physically intimidating and he might want to get closer to her, except her upbringing and way of thinking is so foreign to him he can't get a bead on what tactic to take. So he mostly avoids her just in order to not piss her off.

Karlach: Astarion likes her but she doesn't like him yet. He brings her along in his party because she can hit stuff and is less likely than Lae'zel to try to murder him. He doesn't think flirting will work with her but he doesn't know what will work—bringing her along is also a way to study her reactions to things and figure out how to make her like him more, because he wants her to.

Shadowheart: They're besties. She was the first one there on the beach and he's kind of imprinted on her a little. They're both evasive and not super fussed about morals and they recognize that in each other. She always has a lot to say when they're running around doing stuff, and Astarion values her opinion (he doesn't even know what his own opinion is half the time so he's glad there's someone else around give him input who isn't a Do-Gooder type). They just had a conversation last night where he pressed her about her secrets and she admitted to Shar worship, and in a fit of camaraderie he organically came out as a vampire to her, and it felt very natural and right.

Wyll: Pisses him off even more than Gale but for a completely different reason. Wyll is the kind of hero he dreamed about when he was a kid, the kind he wished would rescue him from Cazador and never did. He wants to hate him. But Wyll LIKES ASTARION, and Astarion's starved little heart is just eating it up. It makes him want to cosplay as a person who does nice things so that Wyll will keep liking him. It makes him want to *gag* be a better person. But he knows he's not a better person, he's just pretending to be, and that eventually he'll do something that will piss Wyll off too much and he'll leave. Shit, he'd better sleep with Wyll to get him to stick around.

The wyllstarion is happening so naturally I'm shook.

How you meet: On a dark, misty night, on the streets of Baldur’s Gate, you were out for a midnight stroll. You spotted a stunning pale haired man prowling the street headed towards you, his shoulders hunched and head bowed forward. You squinted at him trying to make out his features, blood red eyes like gemstones glittered back at you. You found yourself drawn to him and by the time you were close enough to speak to him, you noticed deep wounds scattered across his face and body, as well as a black eye. You felt like destroying anyone who would dare to harm this beautiful creature. “What happened to you?” you asked him, offering him a healing potion. A rueful smile twisted his face, and feeling particularly emotional he told you about Cazador. You vowed to help him, and you both hatched a plot to take over Cazador’s ritual of Ascension. After he ascended, he knew you were his forever.

Astarion, despite being ascended, has so many undealt emotions that only you can see. You find ways to break his walls and try caring for him, talking to him and letting him know despite the power dynamics you stay with him because of love.

This boy has so much trauma that he has a hard time resting due to thoughts about Cazador. He summons you for cuddles and will never admit that he feels at ease and at rest with you. But you know it deep within.

His favourite spawn cheat on him? Never. You belong to him, and no one else can have you. He will kill anyone who touches his girl.

Astarion has all the riches after the ritual, all the power. And after all you are his favourite spawn “Go on, go buy anything you desire my love. Look good for me”

When Astarion sees you getting upset and jealous when he is spending time with his other spawns, he slaughters them and watches them heal as they writhe in pain. “Does that satisfy you my love? Does that reassure you that you're my favourite?”

Astarion makes you rap for him like a personal bard while he drinks wine and gazes at you lovingly.

Astarion knows deep in his heart that your love and care for him is true, even if he does not show it. That is why he is afraid to anger you, knowing you can be unforgiving.

Astarion will only drink blood from you. He knows your possessive nature, and will cater to it. He already has had a lifetime of restraining himself, so he would eat a rat before he drank from another woman.

Astarion once in a while will ask you to trace out his back scars with your soft fingers, just to remind him of the pain he went through and refuel his anger that he will never be able to see them himself in the mirror. These are the moments he is most vulnerable as he holds your hands in his and thanks you for being his side.

Minthara likes your cosplaying abilities because it helps with disguises and killing people when they least expect it.

She will be equally as possessive as you. She will not let anyone, but herself show love to you.

Why did you pick the race you did for your Tav?

Half High Elf. Because *sigh* human has no pretty face for male and elven? Either you have melted face, Cazador cosplay or this thing...

Male faces in BG3 are either a bit too masculine or UGLY. Drow has a lot of good faces, but I would like my Tav to be a noble from Baldur's so half high elf is the best choice

There's been a lot said about how Astarion could ever hide the fact he's a vampire. Yes, yes, it's easier to see his pale skin, the jagged scars on his neck (fuck you, Cazador) and the proper color of his eyes for us during the day.

Well, he slept with most of the people he brought to Cazador, they've seen him in detail. Almost all of them were probably too drunk and/or horny to care. There are darker explonations for that, too.

There are vampire cultists over there and nobody can impersonate a vampire like Astarion, right? I can imagine him having a bitter laugh about it.

Or, you know, sometimes he could have pretended "funny" roleplay. There's nothing more desireable in the world than a vampire, is there? Now I'm picturing Sebastian having his stag party ball and there's this handsome guy cosplaying a vampire. "Well, I need to find out if I'm into guys but I certainly have this fetish!" Which yes, is both hillarious and horrifying.
