"Just say one word.."
The longest process and emotionally difficult drawing in my Astarion-Cazador series for now. I wanted to finish it a few weeks ago, but then I took a long rest for something else. And finally - here it is

bg3 ramblings
as a person who has had a difficult home life, playing thru Astarion's quest in Cazador's Mansion is... poignant.
the game really captures that feeling of creeping around your home town after being gone for a long time, worried you are going to get caught being there, seeing old faces and putting on an act for them.
and damn, and when you ask Astarion if he's sure he wants to do this and he says
Tumblr media
"Oh I've never been less sure of anything. But if I don't face him now, I never will."
Tumblr media
"I'll spend the rest of my life running, watching the shadows, never feeling safe."
That... hits.
i too know that feeling of never wanting to face that family figure, tiptoeing around, never feeling safe. no time feels like the right time to face what has happened to you, that you are ever safe enough. but you need to.
i did originally romance Astarion bc he was a hot elf twink that hit on me a lot. but the more i saw his story, of fighting for his independence, his freedom from his family, it really resonated with me on a personal, human, level in a way a game never has before.
what a game.

Mad respect for Cazador fans. To look at the most hated man in the game and say “he needs to be in cat ears and a maid dress”

Fix-it AU
one comment made me think what would happen if Astarion brought my Durge to Cazaldor before the main story.

Finding it very interesting how no matter what, unless Astarion actually completed Ascension, Cazador dies by his own blade.
-Astarion will stab him with it in the non-ascension route, in the cutscene I’m sure we’ve all seen by now.
-The tav will stab him with it as he lays in his coffin, assuming Astarion isn’t there to do it.
-If you choose to stop Astarion in the middle of the ritual, the tav will run up, grab the blade from the floor, and throw it at Cazador—killing him instantly, thereby preventing the ritual from completing.
-Likewise, in the route of Astarion ascending, this is the blade he uses to carve the contract onto Cazador’s back. Thus even if the tav doesn’t stab him here, the blade has still largely contributed to his death.
His own blade is always used to end his life, effectively. Considering this is Cazador’s blade, it’s very likely that this is the one he used when carving those marks onto Astarion’s back all those years ago. I just find it fascinating that it’s his blade that ends his life in every scenario, and there’s pretty much no option to kill him otherwise. It’s very symbolic, and I imagine very cathartic for Astarion, and all his siblings subsequently.

*THE PALE ELF QUEST ACT 3 SPOILERS*
I’ve been thinking a lot about a few things revealed in Astarion’s interaction with Sebastian a lot.
Astarion revealed that he doesn’t even remember the color that his eyes used to be, but the millisecond he looked at Sebastian he remembered not only who he was, but name and exactly how long ago it was since he had met him. He cared so little about his own self, his own fate, he fixated so hard and felt so deeply for the one he had damned. The moment he had realized who Sebastian was you can literally see him just… break. He even said, if you push him, that he knows he’d deserved to be murdered by the spawn that he gave to Cazador. He pushes it down, but he cares so deeply for others. He feels so so much.
Astarion had met Sebastian 170 years ago according to him, and Astarion had said he himself been under Cazador’s control for 200 years, after he had only been alive for 39 years. Astarion had also said that Sebastian was one of his first victims. I can’t stop thinking about those 30 years that are seemingly unaccounted for. Did this mean that for 30 years, he was kept inside? Does this mean that it was 30 years before Cazador allowed him to go out into the city and even just interact with others? That he might’ve spent what was almost an equal amount of his lifetime being isolated and tortured?
…I feel ill. Nobody speak to me ever again.
