Orders on the Hoop
A westbound Conrail freight train is approaching Effingham, Illinois. The train is due to receive orders by way of paper “flimsies,” two of which can be seen in the order hoop.
This line was formerly Penn Central and Pennsylvania Railroad prior to that, as the distinctive signal indicates. The locomotive on point is a unique variation of the SDP45 built for the Erie Lackawanna, which was folded into Conrail on April 1st 1976.

So the Milwaukee Road was the First Railroad to use the use 3000 Volt DC power for any significant stretches of Electrification in 1915 (it was adopted by South African Railways in 1925, Cleveland Union Terminal (under the New York Central Railroad), the Soviet Union in 1930, the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad in 1930, Italy in 1933, Brazil in 1935, Spain and Chile in 1945)
however the Primary mainline Electrification system United States would be 11,000 Volts 25 Hertz AC which was Adopted by the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad in 1907 between Pelham and Stamford in New York (later all the way between Manhattan and New Haven CT), the Pennsylvania in 1915 between Philadelphia and Paoli (later the Entire PRR mainline between Washington DC and New York as well the entire Philadelphia Suburban Network), the Great Northern railroad in 1922 between Wenatchee and Skykomish (de-electrified in 1956), the Virginian Railroad in 1925 between Mullens and Roanoke (de-electrified in 1962), the Reading Railroad in 1928 for their Half of the Philadelphia Suburban Network, and very Briefly the Norfolk and Western had Electrified the Elkhorn grade with this system but de-electrified in 1940

And now let me also share this piece- (almost) every new oc I made in 2023. Also a few ocs who have existed for years and finally got their designs this year. Which amounts to 28 characters here. (29 if you count the living sword)

Argentine Yard was a focal point for Santa Fe power on the eastern portion of their railroad. Evidence of the ill-fated SPSF merger was on display this day along with regular power and some Conrail intruders. June 28, 1986

We should revive ConRail and but call it the Liberated Rail Corperation because it would Liberate us from the Class 1 railroads, we could shorten it to Librail, and it wouldn't have to die again because the name would be such a popular pun, nobody would kill it

If Biden was a real union man like he likes to call himself, he would simply threaten to nationalize the rail infrastructure, prohibit private companies from shipping interstate, and bring back Conrail offering to hire anybody who's laid off or quits from the existing rail oligarchies.

Westbound from Avon
The first image here shows a westbound train ready to depart Avon Yard (in the distance, on the left hand side of the frame). We're on the former Big Four/NYC west of Indianapolis.
Conrail is two months old when these pictures were taken so the power standing off to the side is interesting—three units of the Erie Lackawanna along with a Penn Central unit with a Pennsy logo peeking out. Two of three EL units (SD45-2 and SDP45) were purchased with the idea of having larger fuel capacity for long runs from the east to Chicago without refueling.
The second image has the train down the line about six miles, directly south of Danville, Indiana. We're looking down on the railway from State Road 39.
Two images by Richard Koenig; taken June 5, 1976.

Have any of you guys heard of the Tumbler Ridge Subdivision of BC rail
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was Canada's only high voltage AC electrified railroad but it was sadly de-electrified in 2000 by Canadian National and it's sadly I similar story for many other electrified railroads in north America including Mexican National Railways and the Trenton Cutoff and the Milwaukee Road's Pacific extension
