Can you recognize this bug ?
Ok, so this is one of those times where the internet animal identifier has to say... "I don't know".
There are a lot of dark weevils like this in France (we spoke in messenger), and many of them look similar. It is definitely a weevil (family Curculionidae), but I cannot tell, from this photo, which species it is.
With weevil ID, one needs a photo with a clear view of the mouth/snout and the texture of the wing covers (elytra).

How are some bug wings able to be so clear?
insect wings are formed from a thin layer of chitin and epicuticle, so are naturally clear. to make wings patterned or opaque, insects use a number of modifications.
insects with translucent but colored wings probably include molecules of pigment, which might also help to strengthen the wings.
beetles and true bugs are among the insects with toughened outer wings (elytra and hemelytra, respectively), which have been reinforced with many more layers of chitin, typically (but not always) making them thicker and more opaque.
some beetles also have scales or hairs on the elytra, making them more colorful.
finally, many insects have scaly wings (most famously moths + butterflies, but barklice, lacewings, mosquitoes, and many others have convergently evolved scaly wings). layers of scales give color and texture to wings and, by being easily removed, help the insect slip out of sticky situations like spiderwebs. if you’d scrape the scales off a butterfly wing, you’d find it nearly translucent.

Bug of the Day
This funky dude is a reticulated beetle, Cupes capitatus. I think this shot is a good view of where the family gets its name - reticulated refers to the lattice-like pattern on the wing covers (technical entomonerd verbiage: "clathrate elytra"). But also, that shrunken nugget of a head is hilarious to me LOL.

It's about time I made new refs for these 3 c:
They're this polyamorous trio of Debu who got known in their tribe for 1. Sindeer actively throwing herself into the wilderness alone to get hunted by their equivalent of lions and 2. Frequently winning against them, and the three working to make their shells into dye, selling the dye made from their lion-equivalents, and selling things made with the dye.
Breakdown of designs and general loredump below the cut:
*rated on how easy they are to acquire, not how common they are in Debu art/fashion
So, a big thing with these 3 is that they've gotten famous for dealing with their last competent predators - the lionfleas (bottom of post), these bipedal pack-hunting bugs that take advantage of their enourmous size, and their dye isn't just desired because it's made from lions but also because the color is valuable in general, similar to how purple was prized and usually reserved for royalty because of how difficult it was to get.
The first 2 sections of colors are really common with the first one being found constantly in the rocks they're constantly quarrying to make their caves, and the second one being a really prominent color in their plants' "flowers." Yellows, greens, and cyans aren't usual plant/organic colors, so they're very hard to get as pigments, at least for Debu who need a lot more of it. Usually they can only get it through trading Zebrapeople who can create these pigments much more efficiently than Debu, as zebrapeople have domesticated bugs who create them. But these lionfleas' shells produce a surprising golden yellow hue from the vesigial wings that got incorporated into their elytras, and this dye is used in the fabric Sindeer makes as a huge moneymaker and a giant ass flex in their stoles.
Speaking of which, Valley Debu have 3 big ideals - heritage, your in-group, and history/recordkeeping. The second of which I'm about to show off rn:
*The right side is the right side of all of their stoles to show they're all a part of the same group, and each of their left sides show their role in it.
Also, the fertility symbol - I went over this in the first try of this post, but the debu fertility symbol is kinda universally known as this centermost circle within the object it's on, since it's supposed to resemble a yolk from an egg. A lot of societies have a specific sigil but it's very easily recognized from the aforementioned center circle thing. The damn thing is everywhere on account of fertility being a very big ideal for Debu - their environment is harsh, arid, and susceptible to frequent famine, and prospering crops and other Debu is something they look forward to.
Valley Debu really like grouping themselves, establishing and aligning themselves with communities, on the broader and individual scale. Yes they're very nationalistic, but they're also extremely proud of even just friendgroups, they love to show the pride and demonstrate their exclusivity within groups as niche as possible(which leads to a LOT of polarization and wars within Valley Debu). These 3 are no different and when they're out and around other Debu they wear a stole around their hump+shoulders showing off how they're the freaks who keep surviving their equivalent to lions and live to make them into dye. Usually though, around the house they're just naked :P
Also, Extra notes on some of the stuff I added as their professions!
Sindeer is a huntress but she's specifically a whistleblower one, and also carves whistles, and here's why. On Bolur, all 3 species domesticated cloes instead of something like a dog, these bird-like flying reptiles who originally were domesticated to keep bugs off of their crops, who can often be trained to respond to specific whistles that mimic the ones they use naturally. The cloes Debu domesticated act a lot like hunting hounds for Debu, they can locate and kill game. So basically, she hunts with flying dogs and makes dogwhistles.
Then there's Rinkalla, who among other things, makes cement?
On Bolur, they have have land coral, these photosynthetic things with a soft, marrow-y pith and a hard limestone outside. The homo mousike (3 sapient species) really like using it in their cement and concrete since it's really widespread, and Rinkalla... does that! The original reason was because Bolur didn't have wood, but I'm realizing that wood as a concept for plants is so incredibly simple that I don't think I can make it Not canon, even though it was a fun design constraint.
Also, last names: Valley Debu societies are generally patriarchal, but their love of recordkeeping extends past this - they prefer the mother's last name to be passed down since the mother is the most reliable parent. If someone gives birth, no matter what they say who's the father, you can never be sure. But whoever gave birth is DEFINITELY the parent, you know? Their last name also doesn't change even with marital status.

One thing I'm always going to be angry at is how everyone automatically assumes "Being good at elytra = bird" or whatever. Like NO!!! AN ELYTRA IS A PART OF BEETLE WINGS IF ANYTHING PPL SHOULD BE MAKING LIKE PHILZA AND GRAIN CHARACTERS BUGS!! I just need more bug hybrid characters but nooo elytrian on the osmp automatically = bird and phantom = dead bird instead of much cooler concepts. I think we should in fact ban any further avian hybrids so ppl can do cooler winged character designs.

hi, 4 am wings headcanons.
tldr: members with wings are using them. members without them usually are using elytras from the end, which they make work with all sorts of tricks, including mechanics that violate the laws of physics, manipulation of reality, and magic. anything, as long as it works.
subz has wings, but not his wings. he killed eldrich-like chthonic beatle, tore its wings off, and attached it to himself with a very old magic. and he can't even properly use them on the lifesteal, so he cheeses the system using tridents while he can. he never lives long enough to catch elytras unban.
mape has giant ass demonic wings, which he usually hides and ignores for all 4 seasons since he can't fly anyway bc of the rules. he starts using them again after elytra unban and they hurt as fuck after years of neglect, but it's not like he cares. at some point, zam caught him, and carefully kneaded and treated his wings, and after that, they gradually began to hurt less and less. wow! paying attention to the problem can solve it!
planet is a literal cosmic god, but he likes to play by the server rules, and he limits almost all of his abilities, which is reflected in the fact that he does not glow, and instead of multiple halos and eyes and stars around, there is only a faintly illuminated circle behind them. his godmod version doesn't have wings, but rejects all rules of physics, so they can walk on the air and fly just by will and roll the continuum, manipulating reality and walking from a selected point to any place in the world. he can do nothing of it in his human-like form, and somehow have no problems with being so much weaker.
s4!vitalasy loves flying so much because it reminds him of their scaffolding trick from s3 and he can't just deprive himself of it because he clings to this memory as the most fun and cool moment between him and subz. its like a dream come true, but at the same time, it's a bitter reminder that something is definitely wrong in their relationship now. he really doesn't like to fly in s5 because of it.
squiddo is a beetle themself, and she is actively horrified by the fact that half of the server carries the remains of her relatives on their backs. at some point, she becomes incredibly paranoid, believing that mapicc wants to rip off her own wings. It's a lie, but not because mapicc wouldn't do it, but because it never occurred to him.
in his overseer godmod ash just has a creative flight and he (or god inside of him) really likes to use it to demonstrate dominance. without it, he surprisingly still can, in some extent and connotation, fly, much slower and more sluggish, followed by a trail of glitches and bugs. spoke can do it too, but with the voidfog trail, but never actually does it. he only flies having an op.
roshambo can't really fly, but he can sit on the air, not too high from the ground. its kinda convenient, but not actually useful.
parrot, of course, has his disproportionately huge bird wings, which he constantly forgets to preen, which is why it always falls on his teammates to take care of them.
poafa has quite angelic wings, fluffy and soft, and no one understands where they came from the guy who was part of the devils trio in the first season. so far, no one has decided to ask. he doesn't fly very well, but he can stay in the air for a long time.
pair of minutech's black wings are fully mechanized and additionally armored. he separately monitors and cares for them, and he even has a prepared set for this. he spent most of s5 cleaning the clown's and leo's elytras too.
jaron can just create a pair of wings of any form and kind on him, but he really doesn't want to do it. instead, he steals any modified version from his teammates. or, less often but much more funny, enemies.
zam's elytra always breaks, and he fixes it in the middle of nowhere with the help of the first junk, faith and luck constantly flowing through his body. he never tries to bring the elytras to a really adequate state and just lives in anticipation of the moment when they will break again.
jumper wings look like a bublegum. they are bright pink, non-sticky, very bouncy, and look like she is putting a lot of effort into waving them. they turn out to be surprisingly functional when she needs to run away.
wemmbu isn't flying, rather, he clings to the fabric of reality and stretches in the right direction. his wings, constantly disappearing and appearing, are a tight coil of thick wires and strings that completely obey his will. they are also really easy to cut off...

Pomni stares blankly at the assortment of bugs scattered across the table. "What exactly are we doing?"
Kinger jumps with a yelp, startled by Pomni's sudden appearance. "Oh, Pomni! When did you get here?"
"I've been here the whole time," she mutters, a bit annoyed at the chess piece. "Why are we looking at bugs?"
"Did you want to see my insect collection?" He asked, holding up an ant for her to see.
Pomni cringed away from the bug. "Uhh, not really."
"Ah. Well, let me know if you change your mind." He puts down the ant in exchange for a ladybug. "Did you know ladybugs have two wings? Their bottom wings are hidden under their top wings- or elytra."
Pomni wasn't listening. She was too busy questioning everything that brought her here. Originally, Kinger had asked for her help with cooking. Which was odd enough by itself, since they didn't need to cook. Instead of a kitchen, he took her to a table full of bugs. Then he completely forgot about her. Maybe she should ask Caine if he could do something about Kinger's memory.
Pomni groaned. It's no use. Didn't Caine say something about not being able to control their minds? They'd probably all end up like Kinger one day.
If they didn't abstract first that is.
The jester was shaken from her spiraling thoughts by another yelp. She looks around, wondering what had startled Kinger this time. Nothing looked out of the ordinary... Wait-
Was that giggling?
Pomni spun back around, surprised to see the source of the giggling was coming from Kinger himself. "Huh? What's so funny?" She asked, not knowing what to do.
Kinger didn't respond. He was frantically wiggling and reaching for something on his back.
"Kinger? Are you alright?" The little jester was growing more worried by the second. Did their oldest member finally lose what little sanity he had left? She was about to get Caine, but stopped when she saw a beetle crawl from his robe onto his neck. "O-oh!" She gasped, gently picking the beetle from the chess piece.
Kinger sighs in relief, fixing his rumpled robe. Glancing up, he noticed the bug in Pomni's hand. "Ah! I was looking for that beetle everywhere! Where did you find it?" He tilts his head, looking curious.
"I- I saw it on your neck. Or- Whatever it is you have... Was it tickling you?"
"Tickling? What do you mean?" He noticed the beetle again. "A beetle! Did you know there are 350,000 known spices of beetles? That one you're holding is called a jewel beetle." He explains as he took the beetle from her.
Pomni felt her eye twitching, but now she was curious. She waits for the bug expert to put the beetle safely on the table before delivering some pokes to his side.
Kinger squeaks, jumping away from her hand. "Huh?! What was that?!" He looks this way and that, trying to find what poked him. "Pomni, I think I'm starting to lose my mind!"
Pomni had to stifle her laughter. "I think you've already lost your mind," she said, shaking her head.
Kinger stares at her. His eyes blinked one at a time, almost like a frog.
"When did you get there?"

Really enjoying the neopet reviews and holding myself back from asking for half a dozen species. What are your thoughts on the Ruki?
As an insect lover, I've always really liked Ruki. There are actually two bug Neopets, Ruki and Buzz, though ironically they're kind of opposites to each other—Ruki have insect-like bodies with normal eyes, while Buzz have normal bodies with compound eyes. Between the two I prefer the Ruki, as the body shape captures more of that bug aesthetic while the eyes help it be more expressive.
Visually, the Ruki is probably closest to a mantis (more obvious in the pre-customization art), though it mixes in a few non-mantis traits such as a beetle-like shell. It's actually a very complex design for Neopets, which tends to keep things simple—it's more or less got the anatomy of an actual mantis with all six limbs, just with the body bent 90 degrees to be slightly more anthro. There's lots of detailed line work in areas like the chest, joints, feet, and abdomen, for example. Still, it does follow the Neopets rule of using color to divide out the body for easy readability, with areas like the joints, feet, and elytra being a darker shade of the base.
Ruki went mostly unchanged in customization, and still look pretty darn good. The only drawbacks are that the forelimbs used to be sleeker and pointer, similar to that of a mantis (stylistically speaking), while the post-customization's forelimbs feel too thick and clunky in comparison—it seems like they mostly got changed so they could hold items, which no one wanted them to do in the first place. Also, the bottom four legs all got inexplicably changed so the knees bend in the opposite direction. The way they are now is more bug-accurate, but I felt like the backwards knees were more interesting.
Favorite Colours:
Desert: Ruki canonically hail from the Lost Desert, so thankfully the desert Ruki looks really good. I like the use of warm tones—brown for the base with gold and red accents. The way the armor is integrated directly into the body's natural plating also looks great, and makes it feel like a very natural color.
My only complaint is that the converted version inexplicably lost the veil that was supposed to be coming off its head piece, along with the eyeliner at the top and the darker spots. It's weird because the rest of the body is pretty accurate. Hopefully they'll do a UC style for this one some day, but in the meanwhile, the customized is still pretty good.
Faerie: Admittedly, the converted faerie Ruki is a bit of a downgrade from the UC style version—mostly because the wings actually used to be coming from the abdomen, like real bug wings, which was really unique and looked great. There are also some more inexplicable changes, like the legs having the serrated look but not the arms or the antennae like the original. Still, the peach and purple palette combined with the detailed markings looks beautiful on both versions.
Transparent: Transparent gets a spot here because it's actually fairly automatically accurate! Relatively speaking. Insects obviously have exoskeletons and not internal skeletons, but this is a giant fantasy bug so I don't mind. The rather long organs are insect accurate as far as I'm aware, and the bones seem to be modeled after an insect's respiratory system. A+ for research instead of just sticking a normal skeleton in there. My only nitpick is that the head could've used some bones, as it feels weirdly empty.
BONUS: I'm tossing in two bonuses this time because I picked the transparent more for anatomy than aesthetics. The camoflauge Ruki has a very pretty tan and brown palette with some high contrast and lovely darker legs, while the polka dot is a ladybug and just plain cute.
