the significance of brothers frassi
so of course love is one of the main themes in honourable dishonour:
romantic = cyrus & aurelius, rita & hektor – how their relationships change the plot and yet don’t have any effect on the outcome; they still die; see this post:
familial = zenobia & cyrus – how their love for each other shapes their rise to power and their determination to defeat the king. because while their desire to kill janus is partly due to selfless motives (the injustice they witness in the royal court daily) it’s also due to this need that each has to get revenge for the other’s mistreatment
so in that case, the frassis are the missing link: platonic love – sale is aurelius’s best friend and inigo is cyrus’s and that does shape the narrative in Ways
the brothers are nobles – they grew up in a huge countryside manor, their every need attended to by servants. they’ve never had to worry about money or how society perceives them, in direct contrast to aurelius, who spent most of his childhood in the slums, cyrus and zenobia, who entered merus as war prisoners and slaves and rita, who is struggling to provide for a family of ten. this means that while they’re not actively making the obvious flaws in aristocratic society worse or taking advantage of the poor for their own gains, they’re certainly not actively working against it, either – they’re passive. sale is happy to spend all his time gambling and not once wonder why he is in a high position in the court when he has done little to deserve it, and inigo, while slightly less complacent, has never been able to understand cyrus’s drive or motivation in politics. he’s often described as ‘langourous’ and has said multiple times that court bores him or that he can’t be bothered to get involved in policy, and yet he still holds the position of a secundus. he’s a little more mature than his younger brother and is therefore well aware of his privilege, but he doesn’t do anything with it, again showing his complacency.
if juna, alcis and the king are meant to represent the people who are actively working against the interests of the lower classes and cyrus, aurelius, zenobia, rita and hektor are the people fighting for rights, then sale and inigo represent that middle spot, and that’s their thematic significance, because they have the potential to change. which is, of course, where this platonic love comes in – because that is their motivator. after the execution and when hektor has killed his father and become king, it is the frassis who step up to help him, before anybody else; without them, hektor couldn’t have founded the republic nearly as quickly.
so their role is to represent change in society and to highlight how cyrus, aurelius, rita and zenobia’s deaths still had an impact – through love.
