Whodunnit?
Random tangent springing from a reblog I did earlier today...
So yeah, Heaven and Hell are surveillance states, but they're not always watching (Crowley: "it's my fault they never check up?!" and Muriel: "every few hundred years [someone consults the records]").
Based on what we learn from the behavior of Michael, Furfur, Saraqael, bee!Crowley, and the Metatron, surveillance records and in-the-moment surveillance of angels and demons only get consulted when somebody's trying to scrag somebody else.
So here's my question. Who in Hell was surveilling Crowley during the Resurrectionists minisode and why?
I do not have an immediate supported-by-canon candidate, and indeed we may never know, but it seems a question worthy of some fanfic at least.

Do you ever really think about what happened in The Resurrectionists?
Tumblr media
Aziraphale spent that entire time trying to save Elspeth's soul from being damned to Hell.
Every questionable choice he made was done so because he was trying to help Elspeth and also trying to find new ways to decrease human suffering.
He was working really fucking hard to do his job, but he made mistakes along the way because he is constantly struggling with the knowledge that the rules become a lot more convoluted as life becomes more complicated.
Tumblr media
Digging up bodies is wrong, but Elspeth was poor and acting in desperation to take care of herself and Wee Morag so they wouldn't have to continue living on the streets.
He is the one who encouraged her to dig up another body because he realized that Mister Dalrymple was trying to help teach those learning to become doctors so they could do better to decrease human suffering when it was their turn to help others.
Tumblr media
He wasn't able to save Wee Morag after she was shot by a grave gun, and watched in dismay as Elspeth sold her body to Mister Dalrymple so she could get off the streets.
And when that didn't work the way she'd hoped, she decided that her life meant nothing anymore and decided she was better off dead.
Aziraphale had been spending that entire minisode trying to save Elspeth's soul from Hell, but he ultimately realizes that he made things worse even though he was trying so hard to do the right thing.
Heaven didn't care that he failed. Heaven has already said "we're the good guys, we're just not doing anything to stop the bad guys". Aziraphale was doing the job given to him by God. He made a mistake, but he thought he was doing the right thing because he cares about human souls. He still wants to protect humanity from Hell. That's literally his job.
Crowley saw someone digging up a body in the graveyard and immediately realized he didn't need to do anything.
Instead he watches.
He listens to Elspeth and finds it easier to sympathize with her plight because he's in the same boat in many ways. It doesn't matter what he does because he won't be able to climb his way out of Hell.
Tumblr media
He listens to Aziraphale and he challenges the angel when he disagrees with some of the things he's saying.
He doesn't interfere with Elspeth or Aziraphale though.
The discussion that he and Aziraphale have with Mister Dalrymple teaches Crowley something just as much as it teaches Aziraphale.
Before he learns the reason that Mister Dalrymple cuts open dead bodies in the first place, he's cheering to the idea of more murder.
Tumblr media
That tumor that Aziraphale hugs to his chest is just as much of a learning moment for Crowley. He hadn't considered why someone might have a good reason to cut up dead bodies, but Crowley and Aziraphale both love children and they both just learned that a child died with a tumor inside of him.
Crowley didn't realize anymore than Aziraphale did just how much danger Wee Morag and Elspeth were in from digging up bodies of rich people.
It was when Crowley saw that Elspeth was about to kill herself that he realized he could no longer sit back and do nothing.
Tumblr media
As a demon, it should have been easier for Crowley to accept that Hell was winning another soul, but the truth is that the entire time Aziraphale was working so hard to save Elspeth's soul, Crowley was able to act as a spectator because she was already headed down the path towards Hell.
Crowley had just watched Aziraphale work so hard to save this human soul, this soul who had just lost the woman she loved who was wanting to end her own life so she could see Wee Morag again, and he realized he couldn't sit back and watch anymore. He knew Elspeth wouldn't see Wee Morag again if she killed herself because Hell cares just as little about how complicated human life is as Heaven does.
He used Aziraphale's money to bribe Elspeth into being properly good so she could go to Heaven. He saved her knowing that he was offering the win to Heaven just so she could see Wee Morag again.
Tumblr media
It's important to remember that neither Heaven nor Hell give a single solitary fuck about humanity or the complications that arise as life becomes more problematic. Humanity exists within all shades of grey.
Heaven does nothing to stop Hell. Hell spends eternity torturing humans and other demons. Neither side is good. Neither side is ideal.
And in the end, Crowley did what he did because Aziraphale was doing the right thing by trying to save Elspeth's soul from eternal torment, something she doesn't deserve because she was simply trying to survive in a system that has always put poor people at a disadvantage. Aziraphale learned this too. He learned that there is no inherent virtue behind poverty.
Tumblr media
To shades of grey.

DO YOU SEE IT?!!
Like I'm definitely on Crowley's side of the divorce (sorry!) but I see Aziraphale's logic and his honest efforts to say
"I have the power to give you what you needed from heaven now!"
He's trying his damned best to hang on to his principles while keeping Crowley by his side at the same time!! It worked for the past 6000 years why isn't it working now!!!
GAAAH this show is driving me crazy.

Idk Who Needs to Hear This But
realizing that Heaven is Bad doesn't automatically translates to Hell is Good.
The whole point of Good Omens is that both institutions are equally shitty because both of them "mess humans about" and interfere with free will. Both sides tried to pressure a child into destroying the world so they could destroy each other. Both sides installed agents on Earth in order to manipulate mankind and earn brownie points with their bosses. Both sides tried to murder those agents when they soaked up some of that human free will like celestial sponges and rebelled against their designated roles. One did it while looking like an aggressively heterosexual corporate asshole and the other one did it while looking like a Goth punk who never bathes, but that's the only difference.
I really feel like we don't talk about this enough. Heaven certainly isn't the good guys, but neither is Hell. Both sides need to get the smackdown so that humankind and our boys (gn) can have the freedom they deserve.

Steve who’s convinced that Billy is straight. I mean convinced. He was the only lunatic in the world who would start liking a girl more after she waved a gun in his face… And it turned out that after Billy apologized to Lucas, Steve was next on the list. And he was having some kinds of feelings about it.
Goes through all seven levels of hell because he’s had guy crushes before sure, but it’s never been like this. Not when Billy’s apologizing in the parking lot, spitting fire with a black eye that Steve doesn’t remember putting there. Not when Steve finally stutters out the explanation he came up with Hopper when they all got back, and Billy had cracked, patting a hand on Steve’s shoulder. That shoulder felt warm for the rest of the day.
And then he saw Billy leaning over Aimee Parkinson and his whole body turned to ice for a second. It was probably just a break up thing. Like his feelings were just acting up. After all Steve still likes girls. Still got interested… but then sometimes he would think about that warm shoulder, about hands that never had scrapes on them. Billy just had really nice hands, ok?
He was able to ride that explanation for another few months, hands shaking when they made contact in gym or when he handed him a beer those infrequent nights when he’d go on a drive and find Billy’s car out by the quarry. Just getting over Nancy still, the feelings spilling over. And sometimes guys get man crushes when they want to be friends. Right?
It’s only that day at Starcourt when he sees Billy drive his car into Mrs Wheeler’s station wagon to try to stop her from hitting Nancy that it hits him. This shit isn’t going away. Not that there’s much time to think of it. Between the fireworks and Steve’s throbbing head there was Billy. Billy hustling El away when Mrs Wheeler dragged her to the monster and promptly melted into it, absorbed. Billy, who was the first person to hug Mike Wheeler after, telling him it was going to be ok, that his mom loved him, Billy knew she did.
Between late nights at the hospital, and waking up to one of those nice hands laid over his. They were friends. And it was a level of hell as of yet unimagined.
Friends, as it turned out, got jobs together. Fucking Keith loved Billy. Thought he was a laugh riot because Billy could quote some stupid British movie from memory. Because Billy was a nerd, underneath all the swagger and the unbuttoned shirts. And even that made Steve’s knees weak.
Eventually Robin clues him in. Gives him a word. Turns out liking guys and girls and basically whoever he likes is not the singular suffering of one Steven Alessandro Harrington. And it’s nice to have the word for it, even if he can’t do jack about it.
And then one night they’re shooting the shit after a late shift. Billy’s got his shirt off and his family video vest on, because he’s a demon from the fifth dimension. And Steve’s got extra cologne on because they’re hanging out. And they’re talking about how El wants her powers back and… Billy starts crying.
He starts babbling about Mrs Wheeler, how it’s Billy’s fault, all of it. Because she was driving out on that road to meet him.
Steve turns to ice again. Because he knew Billy was straight but… this…
But Billy keeps crying. Talking about his dad, how his dad always wants him to be a man. That he had to lie he had a date tonight just to be here. And how Billy thought if a rumor started with the moms in town it would finally get back to his dad, and his dad would believe it and lay off him. Believe that Billy is straight.
Steve lays a hand on Billy’s shoulder. And it burns, burns like hell. What did Billy always say. Looks like there’s some fire in him after all?
“What if you weren’t lying to your dad?”
Sniffles. Wiping tears away from blue eyes with his own hands.
“Whad’ya mean, Harrington.”
“This could be a date.”
Billy doesn’t move away. Those hands curl into Steve’s vest collar as their lips meet. Billy makes a noise, a sweet heavenly noise.
“You can call me Stephanie,” Steve whispers when they finally pull apart for a second. “If that makes you feel better.”
Billy snorts. “I could never want a girl like this. Sorry, I’ve only had my eye on one guy in town. Maybe you’ve heard of King Steve?”
Steve runs his hands up Billy’s shoulders, tangles in his hair, slotting their knees together. Billy can be very convincing.

Mother I'm on my knees and begging for a SPICY fallen angel villain × cursed by the devil hero. May thy pen shine and glamor 🙏🏻
The villain let out a relieved moan.
As they could feel it inside them, hard and hateful, they allowed themselves to close their eyes and enjoy the moment. They took in slow breaths, concentrating, preparing.
Eventually, they looked at the hero and a smile tugged at the corners of their mouth.
“Are you flirting with me?” they asked. One of their hands followed the hero’s collarbone.
“You tell me.” The hero pushed further and caught by surprise, the villain laughed breathlessly. They took the hero’s hand.
Back when they’d been an angel, they’d never felt anything like this. It was a new and exciting feeling. Something only a human body could experience like this.
“I swear,” they whispered. “One day, you’ll find yourself on your knees for me.”
“Is that so?” Another push. Another desperate gasp for air. The hero’s fingers dug into their biceps and the villain’s heart raged in its cage. It was cruel, very cruel.
They looked down at the knife in their chest, at the dark blood that ran down their body. By now, the hero’s hand was covered in it. A “mortal” had complete control over them and they weren’t even hiding it.
“You foul creature,” the villain said. The problem was that it hurt. It was an indescribable pain. The villain had been through all kinds of things like this throughout the centuries. Hell, they’d been tortured for the majority of them.
But this knife in their chest and this person in front of them were for some reason much more effective.
The hero was — in their own way — admirable. For a human, they were very brave. Their voice was sweeter than forbidden fruit.
Something about them excited the villain. They awoke something inside them. Something very ancient.
“I didn’t know your blood is red. So human,” the hero said. They dug their fingers close to the wound into the villain’s skin and there was nothing else for the villain to do but to grunt pathetically.
“You are full of surprises.” Their lips brushed the villain’s cheekbones until the hero let go of the blade and stared at its place there in the villain’s chest. “My immortality doesn’t look this pretty.”
“You can’t kill me like this,” the villain whispered. “You’re not the only who’s cursed. Not the only one who’s been punished.”
They pulled out the blade and let it fall to the ground, eyes wide. It was a horrible feeling, something they hopefully could forget some day. But the hero didn’t seem surprised.
The blood dropped to the ground and formed a little lake.
Clearly, the wound wasn’t closing right away. The villain knew it would take over an hour for them to see the scar. Usually, the bones would take much longer. Blood wasn’t a problem. They had bled for hours, years, centuries before.
“I would have killed you a long time ago,” the villain said. They put their head on the hero’s shoulder, almost embracing them in a strange hug. “I didn’t know your patience back then. I didn’t know your dedication.”
The hero pulled them closer and the blood dropped down the hero’s stomach as well.
“Do you like it? Do you like the way I am?”
“I do,” the villain said. “You are delightful, even though you try to kill me all the time.”
I want to kiss you. What does it feel like? What does it feel like to kiss someone?
“You know I cannot stop.”
“I don’t want you to. I hated you for that as well. I didn’t see you. But now I do,” the villain said. They could barely breathe. Their damaged lungs were filling up with blood but their self-healing body sew them back together. They were on the edge of drowning the entire time. “And I will keep haunting you.”
It was quite clear to the villain now. For the first time in their life, they had a real desire.
“Then I will keep killing you to lift the curse,” the hero whispered. “I look forward to the next centuries.”

Imagine how weird Vaggie must feel. When she was in heaven, they probably told them whatever about the morningstar-family and then she's stuck in hell herself just to find out how lovely the daughter of the fallen angel is.
Even more; after some years she met Lucifer himself. She most likely heard the most frightening stories about him and that he was absent from Charlie (who didn't even want to call him) made her view on him not better. Then he walks in and he's just a funky little guy. Starts a singing battle with one of the overlords and at the end of the day he admits how much he adores his daughter and that he missed her.
Must have been a wild day for Vaggie.

Of course Hell is awful, but oh, it is not nearly as terrifying as Heaven. Demons are (or are supposed to be) evil for evil's sake. They don't tell themselves they are the good ones, they actually just enjoy being evil, spreading chaos and destruction. You can expect any sort of wicked thing from them, and occasionally you could be lucky enough to stumble upon a nic... ehm, not-so-bad demon like Crowley. Heaven and its angels firmly believe they are good. They're "the side of light, of truth". They act for a higher, noble purpose, and would do anything to fulfil it. "The end justify the means" and anything they do, no matter how cruel or fierce, is justified and blessed in the name of a greater Good. It's just like religious terrorism: you must be willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to the Higher Purpose, and any slaughter you may leave in your wake is just an unavoidable casualty. Heaven can make a monster out of you as much as Hell, while convincing you that you are actually ineffably good and always right. And if you never question it (and angels usually don't, because of their blind and unshakeable faith in the Great Plan), you can easily become evil for Good's and God's sake. It's no surprise that the ultimate challenge and threat of S3 comes from the Metatron and Heaven, not from Hell. Going back to Heaven is the most crazy, brave, stupid, difficult and inevitable thing that Aziraphale could have done.

I love everything about this scene. It is all so very dear to me, it’s almost unbearable.
But as much as I love the admittance of loneliness, the very beginning of the formation of the team, the side, the group of the two of them ™️, I love even more what was unsaid here.
For all that was said of loneliness, going with their respective offices only so far as they can, being separated by the line of “good and evil”,
This was the moment that each said, in their own loving and unspoken ways, that despite the loneliness, neither was alone in it. They were together.
Involved.
That the other was not alone in their wanderings of the shades of grey between who they were meant to be as a demon and an angel.
And I think that is very beautiful.
