We started buddy reading Nalo Hopkinson's Skin Folk for #Pride and #readcaribbean month (not that we ever need an excuse to read Nalo Hopkinson). We are really enjoy the unique world of each story, and the discussion on sexuality, ingenerational trauma, & the magic the double click Hopkinson's writing inspired. We are really excited to read Tan-Tan and Dry Bone because Midnight Robber continues to be one of our favorite books! Reposted from @g.tea.reader As we close #pridemonth and #readcaribbean month, I would like to highlight a fave writer whose writing intersects these two identities: Nalo Hopkinson. I'm such a fan of her writing. She gives me all that I need: speculative, queer fiction with a heavy heavy influence of Caribbean history and lore. I love that she treats her queer characters as full and complete human beings, not just vehicles for trauma, or means to encourage growth and gratitude in a main character (looking at you Love After Love 👀). In Skin Folk, a collection of speculative fiction short stories, there's a story entitled Fisherman. A quick read that leaves an impression. The main character is a shy, sexually inexperienced, transmasculine fisherman who goes to a brothel for his first sexual encounter. Honestly, Nalo has set the bar for writing eroticism. Besides the erotic elements, the story is such an affirming one. And with her roots in Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad...she is truly a Caribbean treasure. Other Nalo books I recommend: - Midnight Robber - Brown Girl in the Ring - Falling in Love with Hominids Finally, keep your reads queer and Caribbean beyond June! . . . . . . [ID: Salima holds a copy of Skin Folk outdoors. In the background are some blooming heliconias. The books cover features the face of a Black woman in profile looking up from the bottom of the book. There's also her hand reaching towards a vine with purple flowers that floats in the center of the cover] . . . . . . #Pride #caribbeanlit #caribbeanreads #nalohopkinson #skinfolk #queerreads #readdiversely #speculativefiction #specfiction #caribbeanwriters #supportblackwomenwriters #blackwomenwriters https://www.instagram.com/p/CgXRp-Cpii6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🇬🇧 "An anthem for freedom, individuality and motherhood featuring a plucky, spirited heroine who rebels against the tradition-bound world of the barnyard, The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly is a novel of universal resonance that also opens a window on Korea, where it has captivated millions of readers.” . Would you look at this gorgeous cover! And who wouldn’t read this after reading that blurb? A long time bestseller in South Korea, this little book was adapted into a film, a play, a musical and has been translated into many languages. I’m really excited for this one. Have you read it? . 🇹🇷 "Özgürlüğü, bireyselliği, analığı temel alarak çiftliğin geleneklerle sarılı dünyasına başkaldıran, yürekli ve ilham sahibi bir dişi kahramanın hikayesini anlatan Uçabileceğini Hayal Eden Tavuk, aynı zamanda evrensel yankının romanıdır ve milyonlarca okura ulaşmıştır.” .

You want to help? Go do so. • #Repost @jillian.hitchner (@get_repost) ・・・ Did you post a black square the other week in solidarity with black lives? Here is an actionable item that you CAN do beyond social media. They need your help. Yesterday, I just learned about Elijah Mcclain who was 23 years old last August (!!!). He was out buying an iced tea wearing a runner's mask to stay warm due to his anemia. Someone called the police about suspicious behavior. He was walking. Some reports say he was dancing and listening to music in his headphones. Police came. They restrained him using the "carotid control hold." He called out, "Let go of me. Please respect the boundaries that I am speaking. I can't breathe." He was injected with ketamine. (since when do cops inject sedatives? they have zero training to do this) and beat up. He went into cardiac arrest, went into a coma, and died when taken off life support just a few days later. Given the much-needed attention and protests for black lives, the family is pushing to reopen the case and hold the three police officers that murdered him accountable. It's just been confirmed that they are STILL with the Aurora Police Department. Make calls today. It will not take much of your time and effort, and it will not bring back this innocent life, but it will hopefully help bring justice to an inexplicable crime. I think you need to realize that... some people don’t believe in god(s)... so they’re going to see the Bible and mythology as fictitious. What’s true for you isn’t necessarily true for everyone else. There’s different ways to interpret the same thing, and while you have your right to view the Bible/mythology as truth, other people have their right to view it as fiction. :/
You know what, anon? I *knew* someone was coming up with this ridiculous take. (I know I’m awfully late in internet time, Anon refers to this post [x] and I 100% believe they’re never gonna read this but I wanted to make my case because I’m passionate about it). It's kinda ironic that in the Era of #readdiverse and "i read to live a thousand life" and "reading breeds empathy" the very first objection is "omg but we're not all Christians". This argument could very well destroyed by the fact that I am not Christian, nor a Catholic (like Dante was), yet I still can manage to enjoy something written by a Catholic Christian who lived in the Middle Ages. We can still enjoy it because yes, it’s about religion and life, but in a way that makes it relatable.
If we want to play the literary critics we've got to understand what we're trying to critique. And literary critique has rules, like any other scientific field. And fortunately yes, there’s a limit to what you can see in a literary work the rest is called projection and no, it doesn’t count. One of these rules is that it’s better not to separate a work from its writer. The Russian Formalist already tried that (1910s-30s) and the result? Eh, wasn’t that much satisfying for people in the in the second half of the XIX century. Divorcing a literary work from the context that helped developing that work, we realized, produces an incomplete analysis. In this specific case, I think you can’t separate the Divine Comedy fron religion because it will surely oversimplify the analysis. And you can’t read God or Lucifer as a fictional characters any more that you can read all the real people Dante refers to as fictional: they had a specific influence because to him they were real, but you wouldn’t pick that up and, in turn, miss the entire point of the work. Also, saying "The Divine Comedy is fanfiction" or “but some people don’t believe in God” kills the possibility of nuanced analysis and discussion of the work, because it flattens the subject. Why discussing it? It’s just fanfiction. Whya talking about? Not everyone can uwu relate. The fanfiction/fanart one (because I’ve seen this kind of talk for Reinassance art being Bible fanart, too) kinda feels like a meme-ish, pseudo intellectual take that tries to legitimize fanart/fanfiction but ends up taking importance away both from traditional art and fan content.
And this way of diminishing one thing to try and make the other look better is what got me the most is when you said:
you have your right to view the Bible/mythology as truth, other people have their right to view it as fiction. :/
because it honestly feels like you’re diminishing fiction. Of course no book holds the objective truth, who cares about THE truth anyway? Not even the Bible holds the truth if you’re gonna use it as paperweight. But if you read the way Dante was mad at politics you’d find the sense of impotence of a man who wanted to change things, but couldn’t. Isn’t this something we might understand? This is what I was talking about in my reply. Dante ends the Comedy with this verse: “Love, that moves the sun and the other stars” (in Italian: l’amor che move il sole e l’altre stelle). And I am sure that many of those who have experienced Love could understand what it might mean, even without a religious connotation. And this just if you want to look at the highest of themes, there’s like...the description of a demon farting while flying away with Dante on its back and that’s kinda funny tbh. Because, well, because it’s fun! Another universal experience.
Of course, it doesn’t mean you will find anything worthwhile in the Divine Comedy, or any other Dant’es work. But it helps not being prejudiced against it.

👻 MINI BOOK/BUDDY READ REVIEW 👻 Today I'm sharing WHEN THE RECKONING COMES by LaTanya McQueen, which I read for @torriereadsalot and @shelfrighteous.reads' #readingdiversebuddyreads book club. I thought this was *fantastic*!! And almost as good as the book was our discussion, which was so thoughtful and interesting. There were things that I as a white woman reading this hadn't picked up on, one in particular pointed out by @_readwithfields, that made me so glad that not only were we reading diverse but we had a diverse group participating. Remember, it's not enough just to read books from authors and experiences different from your own, but to also surround yourself with real people who are like that too. That's one reason I love bookstagram -- I know some of us live in places where it's not easy to do that, but on here, we can seek those people out with intention! RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.💫 Q: Tell me something that made you smile this week! Or, do you have any plans for the weekend? A: The fact that my 14yo son, who is a freshman in HS, still says "I love you" when he gets out of the car each morning definitely makes me smile 😁 👻👻👻 #whenthereckoningcomes #latanyamcqueen #ghosts #ghoststories #ghoststory #horrorfiction #horrorbooks #diversebooks #diversereads #diverseauthors #diverseauthorsmatter #readdiversebooks #readdiversely #readdiverse #diversity #buddyreading #buddyread #buddyreads #bookkeepingblog #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #bookstagram #booktography #booksbooksbooks #booknerd #booknerds #booklover #booklove #booklovers https://www.instagram.com/p/CjtOBWurVVW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sudah lama sekali nggak baca bukunya kak Andry (yang ditulis kak Andry, ya). Terakhir baca sepertinya yang Then I Hate You So. Buku yang kali ini, New York New York, ketemunya random sekali. Pas lagi scrolling buku-buku penerbit Koru di Google Play Book. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Seperti judulnya, seting lokasi cerita ada di New York. Ceritanya ringan. Bukunya hanya sekedar 130an halaman. Kalau ada versi cetaknya suatu saat nanti, mungkin akan tipis (I want to buy it and read it again).

I read #aHundredThousandWords the other day, and holy crap it's so good. It's an interracial m/m couple, one of whom is a bisexual guy! The characters have anxiety and pressure about being/doing what expected of them, but not regarding their sexualities. (this isn't a coming of age type coming out story, they're in college and they both know who they are) there's abandonment and trust issues and not knowing how to talk about things. And great male friendships and different family situations. It's so good. I recommend it. #nyraedawn #lgbtqbooks #gaybook #interracialgaycouple #queerbook #diversity #diversitybingo2017 #readdiverse #readdiverse2017 #kindle #amazonfiretablet #ebook #readingisrad #bookstagram #booknerd Also this pic is weird. #HarpiesReadAug Day 20 • LGBTQIA+ • . . . Though my LGBTQIA+ shelf is growing I thought I'd share some of my favourite comics/graphic novels written by and/or featuring LGBTQIA women and characters. I recommend all of these. They all fulfill a different type of genre. Girl power friendship adventure, self-discovery family tragicomic, and a retelling featuring lesbian characters and folklore. The art, the writing, the characters, and stories are all brilliant. Read this and let me know what you think! Comic: - Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson, Shannon Walters, Grace Ellis and Brooke A. Allen Graphic Memoir: - Fun Home by Alison Bechdel Graphic Novel: - The One Hundred Nights of Hero by Isabel Greensberg Please comment any recommendations down below and let me know if you want synopsis for any of these! . . . . #bookstagram #bookstagramchallenge #harpiesreadaug #lgbtqia #readdiverse #lgbtqreads #representationinliterature #comics #graphicnovels #funhome #lumberjanes #onehundrednightsofhero #writingbywomen #readingissexy
