Valerio Minato's photo that won the Astronomy Picture of the Day Contest by NASA on December 25th, 2023.
In the picture: the moon, the Monviso Mount and the Basilica of Superga (on the Superga hill) outside Turin are all aligned. it took him 6 years to take this shot (and I take it as an example to never give up on your dreams).

Taken in Piemonte, Italy, the cathedral in the foreground is the Basilica of Superga, the mountain in the middle is Monviso, and, well, you know which moon is in the background. Here, even though the setting Moon was captured in a crescent phase, the exposure was long enough for doubly reflected Earthlight, called the da Vinci glow, to illuminate the entire top of the Moon.

La tragedia di Superga | The Superga Tragedy
Today marks the anniversary of a tragedy happened on May 4th 1949: an airplane carrying the Grande Torino football team and 3 journalists (31 people in total) crashed over the Superga hill outside Turin. Nobody survived. They were coming back home after a friendly match against Benfica in Portugal. Our whole country got very hurt after this tragedy, not just football's enthusiasts but everyone: those people were a symbol of Italy's strength and rebirth after WWII. 10 out of 12 players were part of our NT back then. The team had to end the Italian Championship with the youngers team, and so also the opponent teams did the same when playing against them as a sign of respect. The Federcalcio proclaimed the Grande Torino winner of the Scudetto that year.

4th May 1949 - A clash amidst the fog
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"(...) the 4th of May 1949 a terrible tragedy hit italian football. The entire Grande Torino team, from which ten regular national team players came from, perished in an air disaster." Mundial Story (1990)
Grande Torino (Great Torino), suchTorino Football Club was known in the 40s. Five times champions of Italy and backbone of the italian national team.
On 4th May 1949, the team is returning home from Portugal, where they have just played a friendly match with S.L. Benfica, aboard a Fiat G.212 of the Italian Airlines.
The weather over Turin is poor.
A storm is raging over the city and there is fog. Really thick fog.
Visibility is extremely limited and the pilot has to rely only on his intruments and Turin airport's ground control. Suddenly, probably due to the strong gusts of wind, the airplane drifts starboard and, instead of proceeding towards the airport, it lines up with the Basilica of Superga situated on a hill on the outskirts of the city at 669 metres above sea level.
Blinded by the fog and tricked by the malfunctioning altimeter, the pilot prepares for landing but instead of the smooth, straight airstrip of Turin airport he is met with the back embankment of the Basilica.
And slams directly into it radome first. The crash is horrific. The empennage is the only part of the aircraft which remains partially intact.

The remains of flight I-ELCE after the crash.
All of the 31 people on board, which included the entire Torino team, its managers and coaches, three journalists and the flight crew... all died in the crash.
Torino FC was forced to field its youth team in the remaing games of the championship... but they weren't alone. All of the Serie A teams did the same and, at the request of all opponents, Torino were proclaimed winners of the 1948-49 season on 6th May 1949 well before the ending of the season.

The Basilica of Superga.
The shock for the Superga tragedy was so great that the next year the italian national team travelled to Brazil (for the World Championship) by ship.
The incident is commemorated annually with a very heartfelt ceremony at the crash site. The Angels of Superga are no more, but their legend lives on.
