The way Ragatha talks about Gummigoo after Caine snaps him to confetti- heck even before, when Pomni first mentions bringing him back with them -is so subtly off-putting when you think about it.
From Pomni’s perspective, she just watched a new friend die before her eyes. Gummigoo was someone she connected with, in a way she hadn’t been able to connect to any of the human circus members yet; they’ve already developed ways of coping with their situation, whereas Pomni is still coming to grips with it, so of course she’d relate more to the gater who also suddenly has to come to terms with a new perspective on life.
In the artificial world she’s now trapped in, Gummigoo was the first thing that felt real to her.
But it’s so clear from how Ragatha talks about him that he wasn’t real to anyone else.
Pomni tries to communicate that Gummigoo just went through the same mental turmoil that Ragatha has been trying to help Pomni through, and instead of extending that same empathy she’s consistently extended to Pomni, Ragatha just praises Pomni’s compassion and doesn’t seem to feel for Gummigoo’s situation at all. She only speaks to Gummigoo when he, essentially, gives her a dialogue prompt by asking if his lads can take the second truck. She asks if Gummigoo will be allowed at the circus, but doesn’t warn Pomni of what to expect if he isn’t. And then, when Gummigoo dies, Ragatha’s attempt to console Pomni comes off more like a parent trying to comfort a child after losing a favorite toy at the playground or finding out they can’t take the dog with them when they move.
She doesn’t even say “he’s not really dead, just gone,” just that he might be reused for a future game. Because to her, he’s still just one of the pieces, but Pomni saw him as someone she was playing with.
The impact of the loss on Pomni is completely lost on Ragatha.
And immediately juxtaposing that with the very real grief that Ragatha and the others feel over the loss of Kaufmo is so disquieting.

No because his death was so sudden that I could barely comprehend A THING.
(I know the drawing sucks but it's midnight and I rushed it🤭🤧💪)

I know the popular theory is that Caine’s line about struggling to keep track of who’s real and who’s an NPC is foreshadowing that one of the cast is secretly an NPC
But consider the alternative
