I don't think self-harm is talked about enough in the trans community. It's so fucking common but so many people just completely sidestep discussing it at all, despite our high rates of not just self-harm but suicide.

Self-harm is how a lot of us cope with suicidal ideation. Self-harm is how a lot of us cope with the pain we’re feeling, the pain others’ inflict on us. Self-harm is a casual tool, a desperate coping mechanism and a shit ton of other things but most importantly, it’s something a lot of us are stumbling into having no idea how the fuck to deal with it because the causes of self-harm in the trans community aren’t often things we can seperate from our transness. Some of it can be disconnected but a lot of times, it has to do with dysphoria, transphobia related depression, transphobic abuse, ect.

And since it’s so hard for trans people to find safe spaces to be trans, it’s hard to find resources we can relate to and groups we can talk about self-harming in because we often don’t even feel safe enough to be ourselves, much less talk about our intimate experiences and issues.

I dunno. I just feel like so many of us are dealing with self-harm and suicidal idealation and we’re just a bit left adrift because there still aren’t enough discussions, enough resources and groups for us.

To be clear, this is me speaking as someone who self-harms and deals with suicidal idealation and I’m saying that because 1. I’m not ashamed of it and 2. I know how much it would’ve meant for me, how much it still means to me to hear trans people talking openly about it and I know there have to be other people like me needing that.

I will forever be obsessing over Laios imaging himself as a wolf (a dangerous animal, and one that is [albeit falsely] associated with loneliness) and Marcille imagining him as a cute dog. so. um. the good news is we found your boyfriend. the bad news is that, well, we sort of…dug him up…in the middle of a car park. in leicester (buckley et al. 2013). leicester, yeah. sorry. they demolished the friary he was hastily interred in when henry viii dissolved all the monasteries. you know how it is. and as it turns out, well, shakespeare was…sort of right about him. scoliosis, yeah, sorry (appleby et al. 2014). if it makes you feel any better we analysed his bones and it turns out he had a pretty high-protein diet before he died (lamb et al. 2014). and he drank so much wine that it changed their chemical composition, which we didn't know could actually happen before we analysed him (lamb et al. 2014), so he was having a good time, at least.

I just saw perhaps the coolest art installation I have ever heard of.

This is a perfectly normal pin. On the head of it are 2.417 quintillion angels, give or take a few billion.

Joe Davis and Sarah Khan, the artist behind Baitul Ma’mur, (House of Angels) encoded the Arabic phrase “Subhan Allah” onto synthesized DNA, and then used that DNA to coat the head of a pin. According to some traditions, any time Subhan Allah is said or written, it creates an angel. With DNA being as dense an information storage medium as it is, this single pin has more created angels on it than have ever been born from human throats across all of human history.

And then in a fucking genius move, the art installation takes the form of a functional vending machine, loaded with an impossibly large quantity of angels. For $25, which goes right to the artists, you can buy a pin. I’m thinking about taking mine out of the test tube sometime and encasing it in resin to turn it into the highest % angel by volume earring ever worn, but that’s a project for the future.

There isn’t much else I can say that isn’t said by the documentation accompanying the exhibit. The photos aren’t the BEST quality but they should hopefully be mostly legible.

As of right now this installation is located at the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and if you’re ever in the area you should totally check it out
