I made you. I showed you infinity.
And what did you do with it?
Hang out with my grandson...?
...raise echoes of my daughter?
What’s your life without me?
Admit it. You would’ve been me.
I just walked into your garage before you walked into mine!
But eventually you did!
You lived in my house!

Mrs. Slow Mobius going on a revenge quest then meeting a handsome alien stranger, falling in love, and marrying him was clearly shown to tell us what would have happened to Rick if Birdperson had loved him back.

i cant think of a better way to represent the lack of fulfilment rick gets from killing prime than by putting the whole debacle midseason. big episodes like that are almost always saved for finales, and sometimes premieres in r+m's case. but nope. they just plopped it in front of the audience without any preamble. and that's how things work in real life. there's no big dramatic buildup or season finales for us. things just happen, be it big or small, when they happen. and i think that placing this crucial character moment for rick - when he realised that his revenge is hollow - in episode FIVE is absolutely perfect. it makes the audience feel the dissatisfaction. because we don't have a whole year until the next season comes out to unpack this. rick has to come back next week because we need to we tune back in. life goes on even after you achieve your goals and sometimes that's so hard.

The direct contrast between C137’s fear of death and Prime viewing death as a badass event in his little game hit me hard.
It makes me wonder if Rick’s fear of death is symbolic (or even a manifestation) of his fear of being just like Prime.
Prime laughs. We’ve seen C137 pray to God for mercy.
Rick got all the way there, face to face, and Prime wasn’t even scared. He didn’t even care about living as long as the ending was fun.
To be honest, the whole experience seemed satisfying to Prime. It was all part of his sick game, almost as if he got to watch his cute little puppet do exactly what he wanted him to do.
He was still on top. Somehow still in control.

I love how this scene dodged the "blood relatives are your REAL family no matter what" trope. When Morty learns about Prime, he doesn't chase after him or angst about which Rick is his "real" grandfather. He just disowns him on the spot.
Same with "Unmortricken." Morty doesn't give two shits about Prime Rick, and it stays that way. No "Oh boy, should I follow this guy and learn who my REAL grandfather is?" or anger toward C-137 for killing his last blood relative. Prime is no grandfather of his.

i'm as ensnared by this episode as the next person, but i wanted to talk about how funny it is that evil morty joined in on the fight Just so he could finally be left alone.
he was completely unopposed to what was happening, his only motive to help get prime wiped out for good (& take his memory) was to be able to say "don't come after me, it won't go well," and MEAN it
