He finds her in bed, curled up and facing towards the wall. He watches sadly from the door, pausing a moment to steel himself before stepping in, glad she can’t see him yet. “Sally, darling?”
She sniffs suddenly as though she were crying and stiffens up. "Yeah?"
He crosses the distance, trying to ignore the squeeze in his heart as he notices her tense shoulders. He bends over to kiss the one closest to him, taking her hand, offering her comfort. “Room for two?” he asks softly.
She turns her back to him. "I'm fine, Will. I just need to get over myself."
God, he hates it when she talks like that. Not for the first time he feels a wave of regret and shame roll over him at the thought of what he was like all those years ago, in Pogtopia, when he was there, where she is, and Tommy stood where he stands now. Looking in. Helpless. And desperate to help. He really needs to buy that kid lunch. And apologise. Again.
