another thing about sam and lena is that it seems like neither of them expect good things from other people.
sam's used to being the only one being genuinely kind in the room, he's used to relentless teasing, he's used to only ever being nice and getting nothing in return. he's not expecting honesty, because the people around him never turn off the irony filter.
lena's used to being the brutally honest one, she's used to the fact that the way she communicates with people makes her generally disliked, she's used to hostility. she's accepted that that's all there is for her in other people. she's not expecting kindness of any sort, why would someone bother being nice to her?
that's why all of their interactions with each other feel so. awkward but generally positive? they're not used to interactions being so. easy. it's weird for both of them to actually get what no one else has ever bothered trying to give them, wether it be the unfiltered truth or basic decency and kindness.

Micheal and Helen headcanons?? (Only if u feel like it)
HELL YEAHHH
not a lot for michael tbh. but i do have a bunch for helen (both richardson and distortion).
pre-distortion helen was a bisexual so deep inside the closet she was practically in narnia. she knew that coming out or even exploring that any deeper than "oh, that exists, i need to hide it forever" would make her life infinitely worse, especially considering the people she'd surrounded herself with.
helen richardson had a form of depersonalization-derealization disorder that went completely undiagnosed her entire life.
the distortion didn't want to be helen, but, to some degree, helen wanted to be the distortion. or, more accurately, she wanted to stop being herself, which is why helen distortion finds it so easy to talk negatively about helen richardson despite technically being her; it's what she always thought of herself too. becoming the distortion was an opportunity for her to finally stop being who she was.
helen distortion's favourite band is tv girl. helen richardson never listened to tv girl, but somehow, she knows that that particular preference originates from her.
helen distortion doesn't actually have full control over the doors. they act as an extension of her, or she acts as an extension of them, and sometimes the doors just. appear. sometimes they correspond with her emotions. she gets a bit embarrassed about it everytime.

i might get killed all the way dead for this take but i'd argue that helen distortion has more implicit gender fuckery going on than michael distortion. i mean, michael was first a man (michael shelley) and genderless (the distortion), and then both (michael distortion). helen was first a woman (helen richardson) and both a man and genderless (michael distortion), and then both a woman and genderless and formerly a man (helen distortion).

A genuine question; Is yer man Arthur actually malicious, or is he just getting silly with it?
just getting silly with it. he's filled with justified rage and violence is his coping mechanism. he only really hurts people when he has to, but when he does have to, he doesn't hesitate or ponder the moral implications. i love him dearly.

Lena: Of course he's verifying with his boss whether a topic - especially involving the details of his workplace/colleagues - is appropriate to inquire about before initiating his pursuit. If you guess wrong and ask, It Gets You.
convinced that that's 100% how she saw it.

no but seriously, right after his eternal and undying hope, probably my favourite thing about arthur lester is how certain he is of his own morality and guilt.
he knows what he should feel guilty about, and he won't let anyone make him feel guilty about anything else. no one knows his guilt the way he does, and he won't let anyone act like they do.
it's so strange and honestly refreshing to see a protagonist that just. knows himself. there's no conflict of "what if i was in the wrong", it's always just "i was in the wrong, and i cannot change that, but i cannot stop living. i will carry this weight, and i will keep living with it, because that's what i deserve."
and knowing that parker was the one that helped him get there. that to let anyone even try to make him unlearn those lessons would be to disrespect his partner.

watching fans of other fiction podcasts listen to malevolent for the first time is so funny because every single time, without fail, their reaction is some variation of "so um. this arthur guy. is a bit of a freak isn't he."
like imagine getting so used to the jonathan sims genre of protagonists that are racked with guilt over everything and basically just punching bags for the other characters.
and then all of a sudden you're faced with arthur lester. who owns a gun, is morally obligated to curse as much as possible, will push his fist into someone's open wound just for fun, knows exactly what he should and should not feel guilty about, will just eat a guy, and is arguably more murderous than the fraction of a demon king inside his head.
nobody's doing it like him.
