It’s June 12! Happy International Don’t Stab Your Best Friend Day! This deserves an off-schedule special post. I was initially thinking of drawing something with Beleg and Túrin again because that would be the most logical choice, but I thought: what if I didn’t…what if I drew a different human-befriending elf who of course would have heard the story…and wonder…

And yes this was of course inspired by that one post I can’t find right now that talks about Legolas poking Aragorn with a stick from across the campsite to wake him up, just in case.

I must clarify that it's not my intention to put down drabbles or smut, or imply that those fic types are "less quality". (I apologize if it came off that way.) I am not saying the pwp drabble did not deserve the notes/kudos it got, and I'm glad it found its audience.

I just wish more people could take the time to give even a fraction of that attention to long fics as well. Because while drabbles/ficlets are raking a thousand-plus Likes on Tumblr, an Ao3 rough estimate of 10 kudos per chapter in a 10-chapter long fic, that a writer has obviously worked hard to build up, just seems...terribly unfair.

(I'm estimating this average based on the long fics I've read/bookmarked/browsed recently.)

I just ran across a fic drabble (Tumblr tag recommendation) that was less than 500 words of pure PWP smut and it had over a thousand notes.

Never saw a more convincing argument to stop using kudos/like counts as a sign of fic quality.

Totally agree with everything you said @scyllas-revenge and thank you for writing all of that out to remind and reassure everyone! :)

Besides encouraging Readers to support long fics as well as short ones, hopefully this can be a reminder also to Writers not to be discouraged when shorter fics get so much more reactions than 20+ chapter works (I know this pain, and am only slowly learning to finally conquer it myself).

Lately I've been focusing my reading efforts on multi-chapter fics. YES, it does definitely takes more investment and spoons to dive into another writers' OCs and worldbuilding! But there is so much love and passion that has obviously gone into these fics, and as I'm reading them it's hard not to be saddened by the injustice of the lack of engagement they get. I have so much admiration for these writers who keep going regardless of the reception.

Shouldn't fics/art that took so much time to create get a commensurate amount of kudos/comments in return? It only seems fair. Then again, few things in life are truly fair, and we can only do our best to try and correct it. :)
