I don't think I've seen this said before, but it makes the most sense of anything.

John left Gideon mostly dead and with visible indications of this (the speed holes) on purpose specifically to stop Harrow (and others) from killing him. This is kind of his thing. He's miserable. He wants people to like and to understand him, but he doesn't know how to make people listen to or like him anymore without holding hostages. He's holding all of the nine houses hostage too. But he's realized they can leave if they really do want to because the entire sixth house did just that. And he can't force every member of the nine houses to be directly dependent on him by using his power to somewhat consciously keep them alive (at least not any more than he already does). But he can do that to Gideon. And Gideon is important to Harrow, and Harrow is important to the entire ninth house and to the warden of the sixth and to Pyrrha (because of Nona) and Ianthe. And if Gideon actually dies, he doesn't know what Harrow or anyone connected to her will do and neither does Harrow. The girl already did her own brain surgery because she thought it would stop Gideon from dying. So Gideon is now an insurance policy. Something tells me this will be important very quickly in Alecto.

Gideon Nav was made to be a loser butch lover boy boyfriend but she lesbianed too hard and died and now has to deal with chest pussy and being a prince. So sorry Gideon my love. In another universe, you work part time at a game stop, skateboard, and have an impressive collection of playboys

this is part of a fanart series I have, so far I've done Gideon and harrow as a boss duo, harrow lyctor stage, Ianthe, and Alecto. I haven't come up with much lore this time around, I mean the symbolism speaks for itself a bit. She's gods right hand fighter, cavalier, warrior. trying to make this more dark soulsy I just added some fleshy body horror "strings" on her and amplified the chussy. and I also gave her a golden skull mask cause id like to think shes not her true self.

I am NOT the type of person to complain abt "fandomization" or whatever, BUT I am constantly astounded by the amount of people who act like some kind of monogamous pseudo-Christian heteronormative "wholesome wlw" griddlehark wedding is a desirable outcome for the story. Like do whatever u want with ur fan stuff and AUs and etc I don't care but that doesn't make it a thematically satisfying conclusion for the actual text. Harrowhark is in love with a hallucination of a dead body and you're STILL squeezing her into the "wholesome monogamous sapphic" mold. She doesn't fit! Let her out!
