pssst, tlt fanfic writers: if you’ve ever written a fic that features harrow’s schizophrenia, consider adding the “schizophrenic harrowhark nonagesimus” tag to your work!
Tumblr media
“schizophrenic harrowhark nonagesimus” has only been tagged by two AO3 users so far, so it’s currently categorized as an additional tag. however, the concept becomes eligible for canonization after three users have tagged it!
why is this useful? here’s an excerpt from AO3’s Archive FAQ:
Canonical tags appear in the filtering features on Archive of Our Own (AO3)—that means they appear in the autocomplete when creating works or bookmarks, and when searching and filtering for works. (…)
Generally speaking, the most unambiguous, accessible form of a tag is made canonical and all other tags referring to the same concept are linked to it as synonymous tags. Searching for or selecting a synonymous tag will find results from the canonical tag and all tags attached to it.
in the same way that “harrow has autism” and “autistic harrow” are attached to the canonical tag “Autistic Harrowhark Nonagesimus,” having a canonical tag for schizophrenic harrow would make those depictions much easier to find!
also, harrow canonically has schizophrenia — it would be nice if we had a canonical tag for it on AO3, too. :-)

Locked Tomb hot take:
The locked tomb books aren’t really confusing. Sure, there are many times when a lot of information is provided really vaguely really quickly, but it never at any point felt like I knew less than I should. Plenty of questions remain unanswered, especially due to the unreliable narrators in each book, but this doesn’t make the books confusing - all mysteries either will be answered in Alecto, as they have been throughout the series, or have satisfying answers present in subtext.
The only reason the books have a reputation as being confusing is because they’re a great deal beyond the trope-y nonsense of the booktok plague and they’ve gained popularity on the Reading Comprehension Wesbite™
Just because an artwork takes some effort and thought to understand, just because the author trusts the reader to piece things together without always being explicit in what’s going on, doesn’t make the art confusing.

The pool scene is awesome. But it’s also extremely painful.
Because on the one hand you have Gideon, who is very repressed, something we’re probably not expecting as an audience, because she is a brash, agressive, openly queer woman. There’s a weird expectation that girls are somehow more in touch with their feelings (this is dumb). But also we live in a heteronormative society, and it’s unusual for us to see out queer folks who haven’t had to actually think critically about their emotions and come to terms with with them. Which, Gideon has not done.
So she’s in this position where she does not think that Harrowhark is capable of feeling affection or love, and that the strongest emotion Harrow is capable of is hate. Gideon knows 100% for a fact that Harrow hates her, so that means she is important to Harrow.
Except that Harrow *is* apparently capable of love and affection. Which means that when she says that she doesn’t think about Gideon that often because there are things she cares about more, she’s not just saying it to get under Gideon’s skin. Which means that Gideon isn’t as important to Harrow as she thought she was. And this upsets her deeply for reasons she can’t fully explain or understand.
On the other hand you have Harrow, she just told her greatest secret, and received forgiveness, understanding, and genuine human comfort in return. So she looks at the world as though it is filled with egg-eating snakes and she is protecting an egg. So she makes Gideon promise to go home and do the thing her family has been tasked with for generations. We, as the audience, have only gotten like five scenes with Harrowhark fully aware of everything post pool-scene, and in two of them she is destroying herself so that Gideon can have even the smallest chance of life.
Because Gideon just had her heart broken into a thousand tiny shards and can’t even express why, meanwhile Harrow thinks they’re married now.
If they had just a few more hours to talk to each other afterwards I fully believe that they would have worked a lot of this shit out. I guess that’s the tragedy. Even in their moment of seeing each other clearly for the first time, they still don’t understand each other.

I'm only halfway through but means so much to me that not only does Nona the Ninth depict a character with profound intellectual and developmental disabilities with compassion and depth, she is surrounded by love and support. Her family may occasionally be frustrated or exasperated (pencils aren't FOOD Nona) but they never get upset, never make her feel stupid or useless, they challenge her without depriving her of support, and love her unconditionally.
At school the teachers are unfailingly kind and give her jobs that are within her capabilities and make her feel helpful and competent.
She is not required to go through a gauntlet of social trauma in order to earn friends. There is loving teasing among the gang but she is accepted and valued as who she is.
Even in the interactions we see with random strangers, she is viewed with kindness or gentle humor (with the one creep exception), not the disgust and aversion we so commonly see people with disabilities treated with in our culture.
So much can be written about how, even in the midst of The Horrors, Nona finds love and support, but right now I'm just holding the simple beauty that she gets to experience that people can be good.
