ok so to me. when agnes isnt being forced into flowy saint dresses by the cult. sometimes he just fully fucking dresses like the lesbian flag
orange hair. funky pink/ourple jumper. plus is pale as fuck
they were a walking lesbian flag like 30 years before the lesbian flag was made. this is canon to me

looooove the dynamic between agnes and raymond.
web man is busy raising children so he can sacrifice them to his web god. but then the antichrist appears on his doorstep and and now she Will Not Stop Tormenting Him

i think theres something really beautiful about how, in a podcast with the all-consuming desire for knowledge baked in to the setup, agnes is this character that we can never truly know.
ik that a lot of the characters in tma have gaps in their stories, but agnes particularly is defined by the fact that we are viewing her through the perspectives of people who not only didn't truly know her either, but were also extremely biased in how they saw her.
a lot of what we know about her is highly up to interpretation, because more than any other character i feel like agnes is someone we know through other people's perceptions of her, rather than through her actions or anything else.
given that tma is about finding out the truth around who and what are in the statements, the fact that she gets to remain such an enigma is really fascinating to me.

everything about agnes living in hilltop road is. so funny to me
she got sent there bc arthur thought the web would be good at taking care of a child ig???? ok sure buddy.
during that time she did. things? ig? i think she just tried to burn people. especially raymond
then after a while she just got bored of raymond and killed him. she kept his hand tho. people came looking for him and she was like 'nono this is my house now he gave it to me dw about it'
and then she lived there for like another year or two. alone. in the web house.
then she burned it down and. went and did her cult messiah stuff ig
idk i just think that was very cool of her

i saw a poll about agnes ships before so. i am going to talk about agnes ships now (spoiler: i dont really like any of them sorry)
first her and jack. eugene says he thinks it was an expression of her doubt, and im inclined to agree. at that point, agnes was seriously doubting her place in the lightless flame (see: her suicide not long after meeting him), so i feel like she probably wanted an escape and when he asked her out it was the perfect opportunity. also she was pretty distant in all of her dates with him, so it kinda looks like she just wanted an excuse to get away from the lightless flame for an afternoon rather than actually wanting to get to know him.
ok jude. i kinda go back and forth over whether i think they were ever a thing or not but like if they were or not. theres no way they were healthy right?? for one jude sees agnes as an actual goddess and that isnt really the basis for a functioning relationship. plus, imo being treated like that (instead of as an actual person) is why agnes felt so uncomfortable with the lightless flame, so being with the person who's arguably the most devoted probably wouldnt be great for her.
gertrude i like aesthetically. i think its fun. i think if they met earlier and on better terms theyd probably go on a date and have tea and maybe kiss. i dont really ship them tho. id maybe read a fic about them, and i understand their appeal as foils for each other, but i dont really think gertrude would be good for agnes. idk, i think the main thing for me is that gertrude is too far into things at basically every point in her life, whereas what i want for agnes is to get away from that
imo the best ship for agnes is just some random woman. ive already talked about this a little in the web!agnes post but i think she deserves a normal life with a normal person (not jack tho. sorry). and that normal person should be a woman bc agnes deserves to be gay.
i really like the idea of her getting away from all the avatars and whatever stuff theyre dealing with. she should get to live in peace, and imo any ship with someone in podcast wouldnt let her have that.
anyway that is my. opinion on agnes ships. obviously not trying to come for anyones ship here, yall are cool and ur ships are very cool.
u can tell me if u think i mischaracterised ur favourite ship or if i missed one. im prepared to admit if im wrong just know that im probably not

Agnes for 13!!!
link to questions
ANNABELLE
this is literally entirely headcanon but. a while after annabelle became an avatar the web kinda nudged her towards agnes. and then they became friends
they have tea every week and annabelle tells her the avatar gossip. i think annabelle enjoys having someone to talk to about this stuff that she isnt actively toying with and agnes likes being caught up even tho she likes to distance herself from that world
to me theyre kinda the only people who get close to understanding each other in a way. aside from annabelle being the only avatar consistently in agnes's life after escaping the lightless flame, they both understand what its like to be a part of someone else's plan, and theyre both people who usually keep their thoughts and feelings quite hidden from others. for annabelle especially its also nice to meet another web avatar, cause then she can talk with someone shes on an even playing field with and doesnt have to manipulate
idk i think it would be cool if annabelle and agnes were friends maybe. or at least my very specific version of agnes

thinking rn about how agnes fully had a dad. like who was he. iirc literally the only things we know ab him is that he had a child with eileen montague and that he had been 'dealt with' by the time eileen was five months pregnant
he seems like he wasn't a part of the cult. so who was he? was he her husband? boyfriend? some random guy? did he know beforehand that eileen was a part of the cult or did he not know what he was getting into?
either way this presumably regular ass man managed to get someone who burns to the touch pregnant which i mean. respect

still thinking about agnes and. arthur is her father ok.
not biologically. but like emotionally.
he was misguided and didnt fully understand her and probably wasnt in the best place to handle a child. but he loved her like a daughter
she was born an orphan and u cannot convince me that he did not take it upon himself to be the parental figure she never had
and he was TERRIBLE at it. for sure. but he cared about her i think
look hes her dad. ok. i am not taking other opinions here he treated her like he would his own child

for the ask game: all of the agnes ships (jude, gertrude, jack... any others?)
(if you are so inclined)
would love to!
(link to the ask game)
ive not talked in detail about agnes in way too long..
idk if im supposed to do explanations but i will anyway. ill keep them under the cut tho bc they got longer than i expected
Tumblr media
judeagnes:
look these two were the least healthy bitches alive but i mean. they lived together for a decent amount of time. theres no way they didnt fuck theres no way
one day i might make a post about what i think agnes' relationship to sex is and it will all be because of the very specific opinions i have about these two
they compel me but the reason i dont put it higher is probably just that its less of a ship i think about a lot and more of something thats a fact of life to me. like yeah they fucked obviously they had a long and messy relationship what more is there to say. thats probably also why i put it more far to the left than it maybe should be but oh well
gertrudeagnes:
to me gertrudeagnes is like. what they have going on is extremely complex and definitely at least a little homoerotic and i do think about them a lot. but also its so much more than that
i dont really ship them in the sense i think theyd be a good pairing, but i do think a lot about how crucial they were to each others lives on a thematic and literal level and thats much more important to me. would you call that shipping or something else? idk but i do like them alot
they did only meet once but i do think that the night they had after killing emma harvey was potentially the greatest sex in lesbian history
jackagnes (jagnes? i cant remember which one it is):
look ive gone on record as a jackagnes hater and i do have a lot of Opinions on it but in interest of not extending what is already a fairly long post ill try not to harp on it for too long
i think for me it comes down to the fact that really i dont see why jack's perception of agnes (as a partner) is any more trustworthy than jude's (as a goddess) or arthur's (as a prophet), for example. being other than what people expect is the thematic cornerstone of agnes' arc, and theres not really much i can see about jack that suggests to me it'd be any different for him
i should say actually that i do think he's very interesting as a character, but really i see him more as the idea of agnes being idealised even outside of the cult than anything else
(also i could not think of any others that would make sense to put alongside these which are kinda the main three but. if anyone has any other agnes ships i would honestly love to hear suggestions, serious or not)

AUR WHAT WOULD THE MAGNUS ARCHIVES (TM) CAST SMELL LIKE IF THEY WERE CANDLES???
OK CANDLE POST
jon would smell like really old books. like when u open a book that looks like its not been looked at for about a hundred years and theres a bit of dust that gets in your nose.
martin would smell like a blanket you've had since you were a child. with a touch of salt water.
sasha is new book smell.
tim would smell like a vintage clothes shop.
melanie would be dried blood and metal.
georgie is when you put your nose right up to a microphone and you can smell the foam.
basira would be old pens.
daisy would smell like a wet dog.
gertrude is somewhere between museums and oil.
elias would be that smell in your homophobic grandparents house that you cant get out of your clothes.
plukas is really strong saltwater.
gerry is lighter oil.
mary would smell of stale bread and centuries old smoke.
michael distortion smells like when u need to sneeze but cant.
helen distortion smells like that really strong sugary smell you only get at children's birthday parties.
nikola would smell like old porcelain and popcorn that's long since become inedible.
jane smells of rotting corpses and honey.
annabelle is dust and really old parchment.
oliver smells of decay and thick fabrics.

my current opinion on judeagnes is basically that agnes knows she probably shouldnt encourage judes extremely unhealthy obsession with her but like. sometimes she wants a partner who wont spontaneously combust from getting within two feet of her

ok i promised @bornetoblood so here is the web!agnes headcanon
this takes a bit of explaination so ill go into how it would work and then ill talk about why i like it
(also obviously this is just based on my interpretation of agnes and her story, if u have a different interpretation of her thats fine!! i just love my funny messiah woman and want to see her happy)
this became very long so the essay is under the cut
ANYWAy so the 'how':
jonny said in the season 4 q+a that one could probably sever their connection with the desolation via a completely selfless sacrifice.
agnes' suicide probably fits this description; the in-canon explanation (from what agnes told arthur) is so that the lightless flame could eventually try the scorched earth again with another messiah.
i dont fully believe what arthur said, and its definitely possible that she was just telling him what he wanted to hear. in that case, her making the decision to once and for all stop herself from being able to bring about the scorched earth probably counts as a selfless act as well, cause even if the scorched earth was never actually going to work, she didnt know that.
the first option doeshave a certain irony to it imo, but it doesnt really fit with how i see her at this point, as i think at this point shes not that loyal to the lightless flame (see: jack barnabus). it doesnt really matter to the headcanon tho, all that matters is that agnes committed a selfless act.
doing this disconnected her from the lightless flame, but in doing so she could have potentially connected to another entity.
all that's really required for becoming an avatar is choice, but physical and metaphysical death is encouraged; agnes is experiencing both (physical is obvious, and metaphysical as the death of her as messiah of the desolation).
imo the web is the obvious choice. she already has a connection with it through gertrude and hilltop road, and a lot of agnes' story is about the ways the lightless flame controlled and groomed her, as well as how her final weeks were when she finally managed to get some kind of control over her life (even if that control is her own death). basically, since control is a big theme in agnes' story, and taking control is the prominent feeling that led to her death, i dont think creating a connection to the embodiment of control is such a reach.
so agnes goes through something similar to jon's coma. maybe the lightless flame thinks shes dead, maybe they realise she isnt connected to the desolation anymore and leave her alone.
from there, agnes just does whatever. probably tries not to do anything too notable. she burns emma harvey's house with gertrude obviously, and she does need to feed her power but i dont think she'd do anything thatd get in a statement.
ok so thats how i think it could happen. now why i like it:
first, i dont really like agnes having died. it works fine as an ending to her story as a part of the show at large i guess, and it doesnt really matter to me in that sense. but for her as a character, i think her ending just makes her generic tragic character and thats not really my kind of thing. idk, like i said im not mad about it being her ending or anything, theres definitely a lot to be said for how her living under the lightless flame couldve led to that decision, but its not really what i want for her.
there is also how it relates to the queer reading of her story, but i talked about that earlier.
also i want her to be happy. leave me alone.
second, i really like the idea of agnes having a semi-normal life. she still has web stuff, but its mostly just subtle stuff (we know there are a lot of spooks that arent reported to the institute, and i think what she does is probably that). gertrude tracks her down at some point to help killing emma harvey, but that it.
the web probably doesnt need her to do anything major, cause thats what annabelle's for and shes only a few years away from being an avatar.
in the eyepocalypse she probably tries not to make things too bad for people in her domain, as much as thats a thing she can actually do.
third, iirc it means that every web avatar thats dead was killed by another web avatar. and i think thats fun. obviously she wouldnt have been a web avatar for raymond, but she probably wouldve been marked and thats enough for me.
i like the imagery of the web keeping people only until theyve become obsolete, i imagine it probably wouldnt want to keep people around once theyve done what it needed them to do. also spider imagery.
fourth, agnes did not get NEARLY enough opportunity to be gay. like she probably fucked jude for at least a while but there is. no way that relationship was healthy. (i could talk a lot more about that but this is already too long)
idk who with. i like gertrudeagnes conceptually but i also like them only having met once. they probably did fuck tho.
i saw a fic earlier that shipped her and annabelle and i havent read it yet but that sounds fun.
idk maybe she just finds a normal, non-aligned girlfriend. thats probably the best option. anyway let her be gay
ok thats it the essay is done. i probably forgot stuff but ill just talk about it later. again this is just my headcanon, u might interpret her different to me and thats fine! the whole point of her story is we dont know that much about what shes really like so theres a lot thats just up to personal opinion.
if for some ungodly reason u read all of this then why??? (i just checked its at like a thousand words wtf) but also tysm i probably wont have children but if i do u are now entitled to my firstborn.
this is too long im going to stop talking now bye
