THE BEAUTY WORLD : FORMALISM IN ART
BEAUTY WORLD SERIES by:Derrick Adams
Art for Art's Sake. Formalism is a very exceptional aesthetic theory that asserts that art exists for its own sake of aesthetic satisfaction in the element of form. The ideology of formalism developed along with modernism during the early 20th century and the two concepts are sometimes used synonymously. Looking at art in the formalist perspective will mean to exclude any and every other form of metaphoric meaning. Any social or cultural message is a distraction from the all out purpose of the art. Formalism is to discover art for art’s sake.
Aesthetic Attitude & Experience. The formalist theory requires an aesthetic attitude in order to have the aesthetic experience. The aesthetic experience is more likely to occur when one has an aesthetic attitude, however the attitude does not guarantee the experience. The aesthetic experience is to enjoy art and delight in its appeal vs it’s universal, moral, or economic value. To have this experience a quality of disinterestedness must exist in the viewer. Disinterested does not mean uninterested. This condition is actually a special kind of heightened interest. The ability to enjoy the art for its own sake or disinterestedly appreciating it for its beauty rather than its universal message is the attitude formalists maintain as their arts experience.
Decontextualization & Aestheticization. A consequence of the formalist theory involves perception, and the inability to see the art beyond its origin and purpose. This aesthetic attitude and inability to apply special meaning is decontextualization. Museums often decontextualize religious artifacts when applying presentations. Another consequence of the formalist theory is the viewing ugly social problematic presentations as art. The aesthetic attitude of finding beauty in anything is aestheticization. Such works of art may be sensitive to certain viewers with such themes as torture and starvation, but aestheticization takes away such references in order to properly enjoy the aestheic experience.
The Beauty World Series by formalist artist Derrick Adams gives us beauty displayed by harmony, and the way it absorbs and calms the viewer. You can clearly see the distinct details in the faces and hairstyles given, but their personalities and differences are not the theme of this work, it is the form. Derrick Adams' art work is liberating and freeing, in that there is no need to experience the tragedies or triumphs of the art, but to explore its form and to enjoy its aesthetic appeal. The formalism in this art allows the viewer to be sensuous without need for validation and the need to find a deeper message beyond the sublime.

One of the most synchronistic things that happened last month, I ran into the Oatsmill sisters. I was just telling Wav days before about how I saw one of Sage’s sister’s mystory shops being advertised, I didnt realize she had sisters before then. I told him how important legacy names are in that regard, because I respect Sage as an artist, creator and businesswoman I trust her family automatically. So after having this convo I am at my favorite spot in the sandbox. I literally have this particular spot saved in my favorites... and I come back from being afk and there are the Oatsmill sisters working on things nearby me.. just randomly we were all there at the same time. I had never met them inworld until that moment. It was super magickal and we connected instantly. I got to see some cool stufss and eat chicken you know Sage can COOOK!
I LOVE THEM!
Salsa nights at Teranga Absinthe lounge is a vibeee, I am super happy to have connected with these beautiful black women , feb felt like faith being restored day by day. Loved it.

Deleted ALL of my social media apps except tumblr :). I want to practice gratitude and be more mindful of my life and lives around me. I want to cultivate relationships outside of social media. Less dm’ing and commenting under stories and more texting and calling. Also taking a break from posting on my blog until I return to socials.
