Yall do realize Hitler didn't come into office through the moderates losing an election right? Hindenburg won and then appointed Hitler. and yet some of yall are out here like "Vote hindenburg no matter what, I know he sucks but not voting for him is a vote for Hitler" Well guess what.... voting for him is a vote for Hitler too. Trying to make everyone vote for "moderate" conservatives is not going to fix things, and is how we ended up with Hitler in the first place

The issue is not that the United States of America needs a "better president"; the issue is that the conservative project for more than 40 years has made it such that anybody conservatives elect will achieve roughly the same policy goals regardless.
Despite the emotional reaction, no presidential election loss is actually especially damaging to conservatives because they have captured the federal courts, the state legislatures and governorships, gerrymandered the districts, and created dual power structures outside of government including media, mutual aid, and entertainment e.g. there is absolutely no leftist equivalent to the suburban evangelical church in terms of organizing. All of this is in addition to their power and class solidarity as capitalists backed up by ideologically reactionary police forces, an all-volunteer military, and right-wing militias heavily overlapping the other two.
Donald Trump has more power as president than Joe Biden because any politician has more power to do conservative things when so many levers of power are already controlled by conservatives.
Conservativism requires doing all of this because right-wing ideas are extraordinarily unpopular, and the right is willing to exercise power to make it so that popular will is irrelevant. That's the whole point of what they do everywhere.
Imagine a reverse world where ideologically New Deal Democrats routinely lost the popular vote for presidency but still regularly won the elections, cities had extra the representation compared to rural populations and kept throwing likely Republican voters off the ballot, and the Supreme Court stacked with leftists ruled something like landlording was illegal, union membership was mandatory, or healthcare was a guaranteed right. It's inconceivable that conservatives would go along with it or keep telling people, "This is why it's more important than ever to VOTE."
One last non-hypothetical example: Richard Nixon didn't sign the EPA into law because the drunken bigot had a soft spot in his heart for the environment. He did it because the law came across his desk with unanimous support from the Senate and 95 percent support from the House, and both of those only supported it in those margins because people demanded something be done.
Nixon was horrible, and he had plenty of agency to act terribly within his sphere of power, but he was made to do something he didn't want to do because of the tireless work of many, many people over decades, and very little of that work was in the field of electoralism.

ok but genuinely if you're willing to look the other way while shit continues to get worse for others because it means there's a chance it won't get worse for you—
if you're willing to trade the safety and comfort of others for a chance of safety and comfort for yourself—
then you're the one enabling fascism, not the people who refuse to play the game and refuse to make that compromise.
do you get it?
it doesn't matter if "the other guy is worse!" you should be outraged that these are the "options" being presented as legitimate. you should deny that legitimacy with your words and your actions.
you should be condemning this farce with your whole chest. you should be using as much of your will as you can give to make this system obsolete.
you could cast a vote or you could shove the ballot right up your ass. they'll make just as much difference.

"If you don't vote for Biden, Trump will win and millions will die, there will be concentration camps for gays, all the brown people will be glassed, it'll be the end of the world! 😭"
That's some big ass fucking fear mongering. These people aren't driven by logic, they're driven purely by emotion. Remember how much people were treating Trump like the second coming of Hitler last time? Remember how much fuck all he did that everyone cried like it was the end of everything over? He did as much as any other fucking president. He helped the government erode freedom. It just had a red coat of fucking paint. And then Biden came into office. And you now what happened? He did as much as any other fucking president. He helped the government erode freedom. It just had a blue coat of fucking paint.
Do you get the fucking picture?

Sorry for obsessing over one shitty post I'm just really fucking upset at people who think voting for the fucking Democrats is likable, sustainable, or even an option at this point.
Like, gods damn it all. If you're saying "America is fucked and bad but pwease pwease pwease vote fow a literal fucking genocide enabler or it will be slightly worse", don't you get how fucked that sounds? Can you imagine, just for a second, that maybe this is an indication that our system itself is causing this? That maybe, just maybe, legitimizing an effective capitalist oligarchy isn't a strategy for change? Maybe even that you can do political actions beyond checking a name on a fucking list and maybe going to a protest every weekend?
Can you even fathom a world beyond this inhuman system of alienation and the systemic destruction of individuality?
Could you even survive without a yoke and shackles?
If this coming election is just "please vote for Genocide Joe" for you and not a moment when you realize none of the power structures are on our side and that only through radical action can we cause meaningful change, then stop calling yourself a rebel. Stop calling yourself a leftist even.
You're a stooge who is either too cowardly, too ignorant, or too stuck up to challenge authority.

At some point your dogma runs into facts that don't agree with it, and you have to make a choice. Do you want the truth or the cool-sounding quote.
E.g. "If voting changed anything, they'd make it illegal," while true, also basically describes what Republicans have been doing for years. They've gone to extraordinary lengths to suppress votes, discount votes, make it as hard as possible to vote, discourage voting through subterfuge, and are now allowing state legislatures to disregard the results entirely.
What do you do with this information? I know I can't seriously claim that Republicans aren't scared to death of people voting, and that their rule doesn't depend on disenfranchisement. In the present historical context, if you live in the so-called United States, voting is one part of resisting theocratic oligarchy. It can't be the only part, it's not a permanent solution, and there are a host of other things to resist and dismantle, but it's important.

Why is there so much discourse about electoralism Vs anti-electoralism. Vote blue this, Dems are evil that..
It's just the trolley problem. That's it. I don't want to read your essay about it. Just decide whether you want to take responsibility or walk away, then shut the fuck up.

Ultimately when communists intervene or take part in institutions from the Party they must keep in mind that there will be no real consensus between them and the institution. Every action with these institutions is a negotiation, and we will never really agree with each other because we have diametrically opposed goals. The institution wishes to maintain itself and justify its own existence, while communists only seek to instrumentalize it in order to gain an advantage and eventually overthrow the very same institution, or straight up destroy it
When communist parties take part in electoral politics, for example, it is always as an outsider and it is done with fundamentally different goals from any other party. The Party represents the interests of the proletariat, and the rest represent the interests of their fraction of the national bourgeoisie. And the Party's objective is to eventually remove the institutions of liberal democracy

Whenever condemnation of biden is met with "but trump!" it relies of an inherent assumption that trump will always be worse than anything biden could do. at what point would biden be worse? to people who say this, there has to be a genuine line, right? It cant just keep going forever? or is trump the incarnation of everything bad which can never be surpassed?
They always jump to an argument about voting tactics, which misses the underlying assumptions related to policy and actions. The tactics of voting are something we can talk about sure, but stop using it as cover to cut discussion on policy. when we try to decide if "vote blue no matter who" is a good tactic, its already assume that trump will be worse, but why? thats not something that is an inherent truth we're all agreeing to.
Most likely in my view, its a buy in to the liberal framework of duality which we're presented. in which the red people are the conservatives and the blue people are the progressives, and that those lines can never be crossed or mismatched. But we can't fall for this neoliberal propaganda, these lines are arbitrary and only signal vague allegiances to rhetoric, there is no rule of the universe, physics, or even sociology, that states democrats will always be better than republicans. Biden is a warmonger and you can't slip in the assumption that he's always going to be better than the alternative like you keep doing. you have to actually address why he provides tactical benefits if you want people to vote for him and consent to his genocidal policies.
and by actually address the tactical benefits, i mean actually you can't just say "trump hates queer people" that does not address it. Biden has repeatedly damaged minority rights domestically as well as abroad, the border crisis has been actively made significantly worse by him despite what he said he was going to do, womens & queer rights have been continually walked back as he stands by says how awful it is while doing nothing, and he's bypassed congress at least 3 times to provide aid to israel, which even several republicans have condemned. Trump is bad, but I'm not going to keep taking this assumption that he's the incarnate of evil and nobody can match the harm his policies could cause.

[ID: An edited meme from the movie I, Robot. Will Smith's character says "American liberals have no plan to keep Trump style fascists out of power aside from 'just hope we never lose another election ever again'." The robot character replies "And your plan is?" Will Smith's character has a dismayed expression.]
"If Biden wins you're giving carte blanche to the Democrats to do whatever they want in regards to foreign policy"
okay and Trump has specific enumerated plans that will very specifically make foreign policy in specifically Palestine (but also everywhere fucking else) WAY worse
"well then if both of your options in the system lead to genocide then we need to get out of the system"
and xou have a practical, feasible plan that smashes the power of the fascists and replaces our system with something at least better? i'm all ears then! oh xou don't have a plan? then what's the point in acting like we aren't gonna be living under either Trump again or Biden again
if we were going to overthrow the system in time to stop trump/biden from taking power after this election that would have had to have been planned at least 5 years ago, probably more
revolutions require logistical planning, recruitment, networks of mutual aid that can survive government attacks, an stockpiles of all sorts of resources for an inevitable insurgent conflict
we. do not. have that.
have xou been taking advantage of america's lax gun laws to stockpile massive amounts of guns and ammunition to storm the government? have xou made farmer collectives that can provide food to a revolutionary core even despite blockades from government forces? (both of these things are very much possible, by the way)
and even if xou view it from a "how quickly can we get this shitty system toppled" maybe don't let the plan for millions of fascists paramilitaries and secret police to be implemented (project 2025)? maybe it would be very obviously harder to get rid of the government after that?
i would be overjoyed if it were possible for us to leave this shitty, shitty late state capitalist hellscape before 1/20/25, but it doesn't seem like anyone who says that's the only moral option has a way to make that happen?
in summary,

(Answer only if this question is welcome and you're up for posting about it rn but) since y'all tend to be very politically/socially active, what are your thoughts on voting in the disparaging 2024 presidential election? Any useful insight for voters stuck with 2 bad options?
"Vote or don't vote, but don't mistake it as the most important political activity or even efficacious at all."
We've written a bit about that frankly quite moderate stance over the years, but the third example linked got us blocked by a friend who seemed especially incensed over the idea that not enthusiastically demanding everyone else participate in electoralism was somehow unforgivable.
Again, as anarchist, "vote if you want to, just keep in perspective what you're doing and be doing other more important things as well, regardless" seems like the most milquetoast take to possibly offer. But there it is.
If you want to vote for Joe Biden, sure, whatever. It doesn't make you a bad person just like it doesn't make you a good person. And if all you do is write in "Free Palestine" or stay home entirely, this isn't a significant action of protest or "harm reduction" or anything. Because, like signing a petition, voting isn't really anything. (But for this reason, trying to run a "third party" campaign, particularly for president, also is not laudable or a good use of resources.)
If you don't have an answer to the "Or what?" that someone will inevitably ask, then your politics are just a prayer to a non-existent referee you think is keeping score of all the hypocrisy, cheating, etc. And your politics should be about doing things every other day of the year and season so that the answer to people who despise you asking, "Or what?" can be, "Something you would not like very much at all, you swine."

My insufferable liberal neighbors will tell you that any vote that isn't for Biden is a vote for Trump. My right-wing troglodyte neighbors will tell you that any vote that isn't for Trump is a vote for Biden. That means that if you write yourself in you will have simultaneously voted for both of them and neither, pleasing both everybody and nobody but yourself. It doesn't take some kind of mathlete to see that (everybody - nobody) + 1 comes out to a net gain.

Hot take, but if the leftists who refuse to shut the fuck up about how engaging in electoral politics is bad and a mind-poison were to actually do something to actually help people at scale, that would be significantly more effective at getting people to see their point of view than what they're doing now.
"B-b-but, if everyone would just get on board with our plan we could-" Newsflash dipshits, that's not how politics works! You gotta help people in a way that matters first to get them to give a shit!
