This might be a long shot but you were the first person I thought of that might be able to identify this! My partner found this indoors at his work (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and I’ve been racking my brains as to what it could be. It looks like some kind of insect/arachnid egg sac but we have no clue, might not be bug related at all! It’s quite large about the length of a finger. Any ideas? Sorry if it’s totally irrelevant to your page haha, I tried so hard to figure this out myself and thought I’d try one more thing!
I already talked to the submitter via IM about this, but as I said to them, it looks fungal rather than entomological to me! Sounds like it was found near a damp window that also has mold on it. I suggested they ask over in the mycology subreddit for an ID, but if anyone on tumblr knows much about fungus I'm all ears.
Some of the fungi from my yard and woods today! Especially fascinated by the hollow shroom in the first two images, and charmed by the tiny slug taking a sip of the rainwater that had collected in the round shroom. Also, the shelf fungi were surprisingly soft. I didn't disturb their slug tenders.
This crustose lichen has an areolate-subplacodioid thallus of convex areoles towards its center, with more lobe-like areoles around its margins. It is dark green-brown when wet, and lighter gray-brown when dry. It has lecanorine apothecia with a pale margin and a pruinose, dark-brown disc. L. spadicea grows on calciferous rock at low elevations in the Mediterranean region.
An international group of qualified mushroom identifiers who do worldwide identification in emergency cases have identified the Shroomers App as a potentially very dangerous system that could kill you if you try to use it to identify edible mushrooms. They use AI to generate almost all of their content, including their identification profiles on their app as well as their books and other materials. Not only is this unethical from a content creation standpoint, it is also extremely dangerous.
DO NOT USE APPS FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES BEYOND SIMPLE CURIOSITY. A MISTAKE WHEN IDENTIFYING AN EDIBLE COULD COST YOU YOUR LIFE. DO NOT EAT ANY FORAGED MUSHROOM YOU CANNOT IDENTIFY YOURSELF BY SIGHT OR HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN PERSON BY SOMEONE WHO CAN.
ONLY BUY BOOKS FROM REPUTABLE SOURCES AND AT THIS POINT THAT MEANS ASKING EXPERIENCED PEOPLE WHAT BOOKS THEY USE.
Mushrooms are fun, amazing organisms. Enjoy safely.
