The thing is, when I entered some queer spaces irl, when I wasn't even approaching passing yet, people made fun of trans men's genitals to my face under the guise of "punching up". I was expected to "bare the responsibility of choosing the patriarchy," when keep in mind, I hadn't even cut my hair or bought new clothes yet. I was constantly lectured about the basics of my own transition and treated like a child by people much younger than me. I'd been told I was going to become a completely different person on testosterone, an angry monster, because they knew someone, "it happened to before." People were uncomfortable using he/him pronouns for me and used they/them instead. I was told I would be better as a lesbian, and some wlw tried to persistently sleep with me, telling me they saw me as a woman the whole time.
None of this is good faith feminism, it's not "women venting", it just can't be. It simply can't be.

friendly reminder that putting 'x reader' as the label on your fic and then using a cover photo with a waif thin, petite, rapunzel ass, instagram aesthetic, white woman as the very first impression of what your fic is supposed to be about is a dick move
even if you don't add any descriptors of what the reader looks like in your fic (which, most of you slip up and do add them and don't care to edit them out) - having the audience's very first impression of your fic be that the love interest is a thin white woman says a lot about your unconscious thought process while writing the fic.
it says a lot about who you consider to be desirable in society and who you want your audience to be thinking about and picturing while reading the fic, when they should be thinking about and picturing themselves being desired by their favourite characters for polite escapism.
just a little tidbit for you

All of this talk about @taylorswift's new album is really just proving to me that people have no idea what poetry is??? Like every time I see a post online someone's put in the comments "wow how poetic touch me while your boys play grand theft auto" or "that metaphor is so obvious how can you say her lyrics are poetry" or whatever and like I get it. The Poetry you had to read in high school felt Incomprehensible and you were Bad At Analyzing It. I felt that way too, and I got a degree in literature.
But "Incomprehensible" is not in the definition of poetry. It doesn't need to be endlessly complex with allusions and metaphors you'll never be able to unravel. The Google definition (from the Oxford dictionary) is:
Tumblr media
All poetry has to do is be words that express meaning and have rhythm. (That's basically all songs.) There's nothing in the definition about how you should be unable to parse all the meanings behind it. If you hear a collection of words that make you feel something, that's poetry. It just is.
Or, to quote Wordsworth, poetry is "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings," which he believed should be written in plain language, and since there's a heavy Gothic/Romantic strain in Tortured Poets Department, I think it's reasonable we should default to a definition from that school of thought.
Poetry does not have to be incomprehensible to be meaningful. You can feel something because of the specific words in their specific arrangements, or the literary devices utilized, or even just the rhythm in which they are spoken. It doesn't have to have you getting out a dictionary or diagramming the sentences or spending hours trying to guess what the author really means. It can just make you feel.
I don't know if Taylor Swift is the greatest poet of our generation or whatever. But to say her songs aren't poetry because you think you understand them is belittling and reducing poetry to something it never has been.

something about censorship in fandom and how the fandom has all collectively agreed that certain things and certain ships that people enjoy are somehow morally disgusting even though they're like. totally normal??? even on a fictional level?
like somehow shipping kalluzeb is morally incorrect or something? and somehow shipping sabezra is wrong? and somehow shipping certain ships even when they're a little controversial is a moral and ethical failure? like dude, i don't even like or ship half of these ships but even then, it doesn't mean i think that anyone who ships them is an amoral person. girl they are just normal ships!! not my personal taste but that doesn't mean it's absolutely WRONG for others to enjoy them! not everything has to be pure and sweet and unproblematic. please get over yourselves.

I am honestly utterly sick and tired of off lead dogs invading Scooby's space whenever we're out on walks. It happens far too often. I walk him the same route every evening and tonight, we were walking along, minding our own business when a dog sprinted up out of nowhere and went for him and it took all of my strength to hold him back from defending himself. The owner was walking up ahead, paying absolutely no attention to what their animal was doing. If you can't control your animal, keep them on their lead. It's not fucking hard and it's not fair to everyone else trying to walk in peace.

I admittedly don't know much about Fallout, but a TV show is coming out for it and I wanna share an experience I had.
Earlier today, I hopped on Reddit and saw people posting screenshots of people complaining about how there's going to be a female lead and how that would alienate Fallout's male dominated audience and how they (the producers) are pandering to liberals and how no woman plays Fallout and therefore no one will watch the show. The comments were rightfully pissed about this take, as was the person who screenshotted it, but I'm not here to talk about the comments.
I'm here to talk about my dad.
My father is 50+, working class, and republican in most beliefs. You know what he had to say about the fallout show?
"There's a new Fallout series starting on prime 🙂"
And then he sent me "I don't have Prime 🥺"
See, my dad didn't care that the lead actor was a woman. He didn't even mention it. I think it's because one of his favorite movie series is Alien, who has Sigourney Weaver playing Ripley, a lead actress in a sci-fi series. He doesn't mind that women have lead roles. He doesn't even care. His takeaway from the show was that it looked cool and would be fun to watch with his kids, and that he was sad he didn't have access to it.
I don't know what point I'm tryna make. I suppose I'm disappointed by how many posts I saw on Reddit about dudes on Twitter dissing the lead actor choice, and that I wish more people would just chillax and enjoy stuff. I'm getting tired of not being able to look in the comments of new movies or shows or games coming out without a big chance of seeing someone complain about a character's gender, sexuality, race, you name it.
I just wish we could enjoy things again, or if it's always been like this, then I wish I could go back to just engaging with stuff without having to wade through posts criticizing casting choices just to get to the fanart, the media analysis, the mood boards, or whatever it is I'm looking for.
I want that internet innocence I probably imagined existing to come back. Like damn.

do able-bodied people not understand that if disabled people call out of work every time they don't feel good that we would call out of work every fucking day?
like honestly. what do you think being disabled means?

Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.
That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.
That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.
That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.
That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.
That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.
That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it'd succeed.
None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.
I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I've seen, but I feel like a lot of people don't really get how much labor goes into curation, too.
If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren't necessarily the direct action of creation, they're doing a lot of fandom labor, and it's often largely unrecognized.
Celebrate fan work!
To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.

I think there's no greater indication that disco elysium is sympathetic towards communism when it literally says "communism is failure" and then the literal gameplay itself rewards trying and failing. The most obvious one being the Shivers check at the FELD mural, which is an Impossible 20 check BUT opens itself up again and again the longer you spend in the world doing things, but even just looking at sheer probabilities, for any given white check, rolling first and THEN putting a point into that skill upon failure is more likely to grant you success than putting a point first and then rolling, but that would require failing first.
Other things too: Precarious world saying you'll 100% fail red checks no matter what (not necessarily a bad thing, btw!! throwing the boule into the sea is a success but like. in some other ways one would want a perfect petanque throw instead. but people wouldn't typically assume that failure is desirable sometimes from the start) persuading you to accept that you'll fail some things that is irrevocable, for a world where everything is just a tiny bit easier.
The faux game over screen when you faint after reading Dora's letter— emulating a sense of failure on the scale of the entire game. When it rolls up most people go "What?? Game over?? No way, what did I do wrong!!" and waking up after that, with no huge or lasting impact on Harry's health or morale really tells the player, "Sometimes things will seem so bad that it all seems like it's coming to an end, but it's not the end, it's really not the end, go drink so water, you can still go on despite this failure"
I'm sure there are other things as well that are eluding me but like. The literal gameplay rewards failing and succeeding far more so than simply succeeding every single time, and I think you get a fuller experience of Elysium that way too

there are a lot of posts out there that are positive and healthy coping mechanisms for handling the holidays. this is not one of them :)
i think there's like. going to be times in your life you will be stuck in a social situation that you cannot escape from gracefully. i do not know why the internet doesn't believe these times exist. it's not always just that your physical safety is at risk - sometimes it's legit like "i just don't currently have the energy or time to put in the effort of responding to this." sometimes it's a coworker you hate so much. sometimes it's just like, fine, you know? like you know you can handle your aunt when she's cheerily horrible, but if you actually set a boundary around her, it's going to be weeks of fallout with your father.
i don't know why people think the answer is always just "cut them out!" or "don't let them get away with that!" because ... the real world is tricky and complicated. i think kind of a lot of us have an internal "radiation poisoning" meter for certain people. like - i'm talking about the ones who are absolutely giving you gradual ick damage. like, you can handle them, but you'll be exhausted.
and yes. you absolutely should listen to your therapist and the good posts about handling others and set good boundaries and take care of yourself. prioritize peace.
HOWEVER :) ...... since im often in a situation with a Gradual Sense of Ick person i cannot just "cut out" of my life (without losing someone else precious to me) - i have sort of developed the most. maladaptive form of mischief possible. because like, if i'm going to have to listen to this shit again, i like to have a little bit of private fun with it.
now! again, i am physically safe, just mentally drained by this man. you should only do this with people you are not in danger with. which leads me to my suggestions for when your Unfortunate Acquaintance shows up and says oh everyone pay attention to me.
my favorite word is "maybe!" said as brightly and happily as possible. whenever the Horrible Person starts in on a topic you do not want to go further with, particularly if they make a claim that you know to be inaccurate, do not respond to it. you and i have both tried to actually argue with this person, and it hasn't gone well, because this person just wants the drama of an argument. however, "maybe!" gives them literally nothing to go on. it is incredibly disarming. they are used to people having some response. they know they can't prove what they're saying, and maybe! treats them like the child they are. it dismisses them in the politest way possible.
i like to say maybe! and then, in their stunned silence, immediately change the subject. this is because i have adhd and i will have something unrelated to talk about, but if you can't think of topics fast enough, i recommend just pointing to something and saying, "isn't that lovely?" because fuck you let's bring in some positivity.
by the way. that second trick - of pointing to something and stating an opinion about it? - that just works on its own, like, 70% of the time. i picked it up from teaching preschoolers. it's an intentional "redirect". it stops children crying and it also stops grown adults from finishing their explanation on why women belong in kitchens. dual wielding!
keep it silly for yourself. i absolutely do not care if people think i'm fucking stupid (it's more fun if they do) and as a result i will purposefully misunderstand things just to see how long it takes them to realize i've completely removed them from the subject at hand. when they say "women aren't funny" i get to be like. "which women." "all women." "all women in america?" "no in the world." "like the mole people? the people in the world?" "what? no. like, alive." "oh are we not counting the mole people?" "what the fuck are you talking about." "you don't believe in the mole people?"
similarly, i play a personal game called "one up me." my Evil Acquaintance literally knows this game exists (my family & friends caught onto it and now also play it) and it always fucking gets him. i don't know why. you have to be willing to be a little free-spirited on this one, though. the trick is that when they make one of those horrible little bigoted or annoying comments they are always making, you need to go one unit weirder. not more intense, mind you - just more weird. "you don't look good in that dress." "yeah, actually, my other dress was covered in squid ink due to a mishap at the soup store." "you shouldn't wear such revealing clothes." "wait, what? oh shit. sorry, your son tears off strips when no one is looking and eats them. i swear it was longer before we left the building."
the point of "one up me" is to completely upend this person's narrative. we both know this person likes setting up situations where you cannot "win" and then they really like telling other people how badly you handled it. in a usual situation, if you respond "please don't say something that rude", you're a bitch. but if you let it happen, you're letting yourself be debased. they are not usually expecting door number three: unflappably odd. because what are they going to say when they're telling everyone how badly you behaved? "she said my son eats her dresses" ".... okay?"
if you can, form an allyship with someone whomst you can tagteam with. where they can pick up on your weird "soup store" story and run with it.
the following phrase is amazing and can be deployed for any situation: "oh, be nice :) it's the holidays!" i do not know why this works as often as it does. i'll say it for the most random shit. i think this is bc most of the time these people know they're being impolite, they just like to fight.
godbless. when in doubt, remember that you could always start stealing their pens.
the whole point of this is - if you can't escape. maybe see how long you can just be. like. a horrible little menace.

There’s no shame greater than that of adding a mutual on discord, and then blowing it at establishing regular convos in the early stages. and then it’s been too long. and their name simply sits there....
