McGill University is considering its next steps to deal with the camp set up by pro-Palestinian activists on campus grounds in downtown Montreal, officials said Monday. In a statement published on its website, the university said the situation has “shifted significantly” and the number of people in the encampment has “tripled since Saturday.” University officials added “many of them, if not the majority, are not members of the McGill community.” A spokesperson for the encampment said members are calling for McGill and Concordia universities to divest from Israel-connected funds. They demand the academic institutions cut financial ties with Israel in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. Signs at the McGill encampment state “You are funding genocide” and “Free Gaza now” and describe the demonstrators as standing in solidarity with the Palestinian cause and people in Gaza.

Museum day with my dad at Redpath Museum
There was almost no one in the morning, so we managed to take a few pictures while visiting. People started arriving around noon, and we left shortly after. My dad is not a photographer at all, but with guidance, he ended up doing a good job.

On February 19th 2024, a group of students at the McGill University began a hunger strike demanding the university's divestment and academic boycott of genocide and apartheid in Palestine. Amine (one of the strikers) was hospitalized as doctors told them that they were reaching dangerous levels of starvation during their hunger strike. As of right now, "Chadi" is the last remaining student involved in this hunger strike, living off of water, broth, and electrolytes. @/mcgillhungerstrike regularly posts updates on Instagram.
Separately, on March 18th 2024 at the University of South Florida, 18 unaffiliated students began to hunger strike as well, demanding that the president of USF call for a ceasefire, the open publication of investment portfolios of USF from 2013-2023, establish a student investment oversight committee, and for USF to immediately divest from all companies supporting Israel's ongoing genocide in Palestine. Several of the strikers have been hospitalized so far. @/usfhungerstrike regularly posts updates on Instagram.

Also, from one campus radio station volunteer to all the other ones, exceptionally braver than me, putting themselves on the frontlines, broadcasting straight from the protests, getting themselves barricaded into their broadcasting booths overnight and continuing to be the only people bringing you live and on-the-ground coverage of the protests, I love you all.
CKUT, having covered the die-ins, coming live from the protests grounds at McGill, you have all my strength and love.
CJLO, for righting the disappointment we all felt in Concordia after earlier this year, thank you for your coverage of the Concordia protests, and supporting CKUT's coverage in Montreal.
WKCR, bravest of them all, putting themselves on the frontlines and bringing extraordinary coverage from Columbia. You are true journalists.

They're the future of journalism.
(A note about why some of these posts are coming from '[station]music' accounts: Meta, in retaliation to a demand from the Canadian govt to pay royalties for using news on their site (Bill C-18), decided to ban all news for Canadian accounts on IG and FB altogether. Of course, this did not touch commercial radio stations that simply play the same 5 songs over and over their breakfast shows, but every single campus radio station is now blocked in Canada, completely killing their reach especially to a younger, student audience. Many have made new accounts to continue posting about the non-news shows on air. There's never been a more important time to directly go to their websites for updates, and hell why not, throw them some donations if you can. They're the ones doing the good work in this time of need!)

Students and allies held an emergency protest today to support the encampment for Gaza at McGill University in Montreal, QC against agitators. The encampment, which participants are referring to as the Montreal Popular University of Gaza, has been going strong for six days with participants holding prayer services, book readings, teach-ins, and film screenings.
Notably, the Kanienkehaka Traditional Council wrote a letter showing their support and granting “the full right to those who are occupying McGill and other campuses throughout Turtle Island to be upon the said lands, with the expressed intent of engaging their administrations to divest from the colonial genocide of israel upon the Palestinian People and from the war machine in general.”
The demands are as follows:
1. Disclose! We demand full financial transparency from the Concordia Investments Committee and the Board of Governors to disclose all investments in companies complicit in the genocide of the Palestinian people. 2. Divest: We demand that Concordia and McGill universities divest from all complicit companies and cut all academic ties with israeli institutions. 3. Defend: No repercussions or disciplinary charges for any actions taken by students of McGill and Concordia university in support of Palestine. Pending disciplinary charges against students related to support for Palestine activism will be dropped. 4. Declare: We demand that McGill and Concordia universities publish a statement immediately condemning the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people and calling on the Canadian government to immediately cease all military contracts with the Zionist state.

The implications of the McGill university sweatshirt that Wilson proudly wears in House MD-
He lived in Montréal for a period of time
He most likely learned a bunch of Québec French
Wilson ate poutine, many time probably, and most likely at la Banquise, at 3 am after nights out with his university buddies

Judge rejects injunction request for removal of McGill encampment protest
Tumblr media
"Students who filed request failed to show protest causes irreparable harm, judge said."
"A Quebec Superior Court judge has rejected a provisional injunction request that would have forced protesters at the pro-Palestinian encampment on McGill University's downtown campus to leave.
The encampment protest has been in place since Saturday, and has grown in size in recent days.
Protesters have said they are determined to stay put until the university divests from companies with business interests in Israel.
Two McGill students filed the request on Tuesday to have a judge forbid protests within 100 metres of McGill's buildings. The court filing named five pro-Palestinian groups.
The plaintiffs allege in their court filing that the groups have "created an environment of hate on campus," which they say has made them uncomfortable to attend classes and exams. They also allege they have faced harassment and intimidation from the defendants.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
In Wednesday's ruling, Justice Chantal Massé wrote the plaintiffs failed to show that the protests were causing irreparable harm, nor was there any indication at this point that the protesters intended to block access to exams or McGill's buildings.
"The court is of the opinion that the balance of inconveniences leans more toward the protesters, whose freedom of expression and to gather peacefully would be affected significantly," the ruling reads."
