The stories were false. Though he bore the white beard and red coat, there was no warmth to the man, no mirth, no love. His gaze was cold and piercing, exuding a cruelty as biting and all-consuming as the darkest ice in Hell. As he regarded the wretched soul before him, there was not a hint of the good humor and charity that had characterized him in the tales. But then, the tales were always a lie - they placed the N in the middle of his name, after all, when it belonged at the end.

"You gave me a merry chase, you miserable cur," the tyrant sneered, his voice not much louder than a whisper, but as terrible and cowing as any roar of thunder. "But the wild hunt is over, and your soul is finally mine to collect. What did you imagine, as you crawled and lurched your way to the surface? What horrors did you anticipate I'd perform upon your ragged form, to drive you to such desperation? You slit your own mother's throat to sup on her life-giving blood, child. Surely you knew then that whatever nightmare waited for you here, it was deserved."

His face twisted into something like a smile, but the veneer of cruelty that dwelled behind every fiber of his being twisted it into something more akin to a grimace. "You were right to be afraid, child, for I give to the deserving, and I give them what they deserve. Your fate is quite awful indeed. No torches, no pitchforks, no sinking in pit of burning coal. Only the cold, and the dark, the unrelenting dark of the void. There you will dwell in wretched pain, denied of all warmth and comfort, and reflect upon your loathsome life forever. The bell has tolled, child. Time to face your end."
