Have you ever done an analysis of which fandoms are most dominated by a single ship?
I hadn't done so before. I just took a quick pass at doing so, but only among the biggest fandoms on AO3 as of Jan 2024 (ones with over 10K public works at that time). I sorted them by the size of their biggest ship relative to the size of the fandom. This gives us a bunch of very big fandoms with a high % of works tagged with a particular ship:
Tumblr media
The raw data used to make this graph, including the corresponding biggest ships, is available in a spreadsheet here, or at the end of this post.
A few notes:
This is based on January 2024 data. Some things may have changed!
Not all these works are necessarily about these ships. Especially in the cases where the ships are canon, they may often be tagged as background ships.
There are undoubtedly many smaller AO3 fandoms that have higher percentages devoted to the top ship.
I removed some highly overlapping fandoms (e.g., Good Omens book fandom).
This is AO3 data only, and (as always!) AO3 does not represent fandom overall. In particular, ship popularity tends to vary A LOT by archive/platform. See some past cross-platform shipping comparisons from 2019 (comparing het vs. slash vs. gen on Wattpad/FFN/AO3), and 2014 (comparing popular ships from HP, SPN, and Sherlock on AO3/FFN). One highlight:

This toast had the audacity to burn all the way through. I was extremely disappointed to see and smell this.
I was very much looking forward to eating them but low and behold they decided to stay in too long and become literal inedible char.
Its rediculous how toast behaves these days

BTVS Fandom on AO3 - Tillow and Fuffy
There are two blogs (ToastyStats and centrumlumina) that regularly post about AO3 fandom stats, and I wanted to summarize where BTVS ranks in their findings. The highlights?
While BTVS used to be a top fandom by popularity (as recently as Jan 2018) it is not anymore. Sadly no BTVS ships make the top overall ships list. But an Aug 2022 top 100 femslash ship ranking includes Tillow (Tara x Willow) at 61 and Fuffy (Faith x Buffy) at 73. (Back in 2014 they were both in the top 20!) And as of Feb 2021 Fuffy was top ranked for F/F ships with a higher percent of adult content, at 12. You can see them halfway down on the toastystat's chart below. Source links, more on Tillow, another chart, and other details after the cut!
Sources are at the end and noted in text in parentheses.
As recently as Jan 2018 (1 - ToastyStats) BTVS was one of the top 25 fandoms, considering only large fandoms. It was at 25 overall and 10 for TV show fandoms. "Large" meant over 25K fanworks. Fanworks include fan fic and also fan art!
Unfortunately BTVS is no longer one of the top fandoms. (2)
We know (from before) that 2 of the top 5 AO3 ships for BTVS are Tara x Willow (Tillow) and Faith x Buffy (Fuffy). While the other ships do not make the "top 100 ship lists" (3 - centrumlumina) Tillow and Fuffy do make the "femslash top 100" list (4). (Femslash is an older term for F/F ships.)
As of Aug 2022, rankings were Tillow at 61 and Fuffy at 73. Both fell from their ranking last year. The first year that centrumlumina did her femslash analysis, way back in July 2014, Tillow was at 9 and Fuffy was at 13! (5)
Additionally, if you're looking for F/F ships with a higher percent of adult content (rated Explicit or Mature), Fuffy is shown on this chart at 12. (6) That ToastyStats purple-y chart (also shown above) is sorted by % Explicit. Only F/F ships with more than 1,000 works were included. You can see the fuller set of data (that includes Tillow) at ToastyStats's helpful data link.
If you leave out the video games, leave out the Anna & Elsa (platonic) ship**, and sort by the total % Adult Content, you can create the chart below. In this chart Fuffy moves up to 8. The new chart shows the 1 - 25 ships, and by that method then Tillow is ranked at 24. (The main difference is sorting by % Explicit above vs % Adult Content below. Adult Content is combined Explicit and Mature rated fanworks.)
[ ** I suspect this is an error by the AO3 fanwork creators. Perhaps they meant to label their Anna - Elsa work as non-platonic, but they are using the "&" symbol instead of the "/" symbol for their ship.]
For the red - yellow - grey chart, if you mouse-over the fandom will pop-up, and you can also see the last year the original media aired. It will say current if the media is still going. Shout outs to Star Trek: Voyager (last aired 2001) and BTVS (2003) for being the oldest fandoms to make the top 25!
Also interesting to see that some media have two ships in this list: The 100 (2020), Glee (2015), and BTVS (2003).
While I made the red - yellow - grey chart on Flourish, all the data compilation was done by ToastyStats. All credit to her, and all errors in this chart are mine.

This might be common knowledge in the fandom but I didn't realize that The Silmarillion fandom on ao3 is in the top fandoms that have the most gen fanworks! I cant help but feel proud, because in this fandom gen is such an important aspect and Its good to see it up there. Especially since its not in the top 25 fandoms of all time on ao3.
Tumblr media
When it comes too fandoms with the highest proportion of gen, they are top 4! Its beating some big name fandoms when it comes to Gen, which is an underappreciated category on ao3.
Tumblr media
I found these graphs in this work [Fandom Stats] by toastystats where they have a whole collection of works on fandom research and refrence guides. Highly reccomend.
I love to see one of my favorite fandoms on graphs for top works, no matter the genre, even if I get a little overexcited!
Feel free to recommend your favorite Silm Gen fanworks. Please share your own writing too! We all clearly love Gen in this fandom, and are constantly hungry for more fics.

fic length by fic type (category & ship): hp fandom stats
more statsy conversation in the @hpsaffics discord -- @siriusly-sapphic and I were wondering how fic length varied with popularity of ship. @toastystats' findings that het works tend to be longer than f/f and m/m came to mind, and I was reminded that I've been meaning to check if some of these v interesting findings are true for harry potter fic, specifically!
so anyway I did not do quite that but did something kind of related:
Tumblr media
took the total number of works on AO3 (filtered for english only, no crossovers, wc>=1, and otp:true), sorted by word count, and clicked through to get the word count of the ~10th* percentile fic, ~20th percentile fic, etc etc)
(*full disclosure: i used google sheet formulas to get the page number and took the word count of the first fic on that page. so, nth percentile work +/- 20 works.)
"F/F only" = F/F -F/M -M/M &c
"excl. top10" = excluded the top 10 ships, "excl. top 20" = did that and then did it again, which IK may not precisely be the top 20 ships but hey. the most common ships left were Prongsfoot, Linny, and Tomione, at ~1k works each out of 78.5k.
this above is the master graph, zoomed in versions below because the scale of that graph is impossible to actually read
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
'smooth line chart' went a little wonky on that last graph but
Tumblr media
seems like the het ships DO tend to have long fics. feels like sevmione has a ton of both long (>20k) fic and midlength fic, and dramione has a lot of midlength (5-10k) fic, and jily more ~1-5k fic.
snarry has a lot of unusually short fics (<500, <1k words) that drag down the bottom-most part of the chart, but there's proportionally a lot of >20k longfic too. wolfstar surprisingly has much less >50k work than the other two mslash ships! in fact wolfstar & snarry have some real interesting contrasts going on there.
HP femslash is noticeably shorter than other types of works, ~30% shorter than mslash at every percentile and almost half the length of het works. the catch-up to mslash at the 99th percentile (or, conversely, drop-off of mslash?) is intriguing though!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
brief observation re. third graph: interesting -- in the mid range at least, wolfstar looks/behave a lot more like a 'rarepair' (anything excluding the top 10 ships) than drarry, snarry, or even "M/M -F/F -F/M".

heya op from the karlnapity number 1 post, i want to hear the theories you have as to why it got so popular it would sound interesting!
oh wow did not expect anyone to actually want to hear about this. thanks for asking!
so first thing, in terms of numbers on this: when i initially looked at this, i guessed at popular poly ships and figured out from this that karnapity was big; this time, i used @/toastystats' analysis from may 2021 to figure out big poly ships and then cross referenced their current numbers with karlnapity's-- they're ahead by at least 1000 works from the (presumed) next biggest poly ship, Bucky/Steve/Tony from the MCU.
This is super impressive! DSMP on AO3 has been one of the fastest growing fandoms in the last couple of years (toasty has stats about that as well, as does @/ao3-anonymous who does weekly fandom growth stats) and has absolutely exploded in terms of amount of works, though it's a bit hard to quantify due to only receiving its own fandom tag recently. Still, competing with the MCU, BTS, & BNHA, to name a few fandoms, is impressive as it's still such a new fandom compared to how long they've been around and been able to gather works.
In regard to why I think Karlnapity is popular, and to compare it to other popular poly ships, I think there's a few factors. In no particular order:
#1 - This one's easy. DSMP is hugely popular right now, and Karlnapity is one of a few significant canon ships in the world of the server. Other big ships (DNF, tntduo, beeduo, etc.) have less canonical status or are in some way fraught with RPF issues.
#2 - The ship is M/M/M. If you look at the stats I link above from toasty, M/M/M by far dominates poly ships, with F/M/M a ways behind. As you probably know, ships involving women tend to be far less popular, and vice versa.
#3 - This is where we get into my actual juicy analysis. The biggest reason I think Karlnapity is huge is it's canonical status, which is BY FAR what distinguishes it from other poly ships.
Below is a list of the biggest poly ships, as of May 2021 (again, from toasty, linked above). Obviously Karlnapity has shot up in terms of stats, but this provides us with a solid basis for other poly ships.
Tumblr media
Most of the other popular poly ships are non-canonical ships, with the basis of the ship being people want ot3s and there's three central characters in these pieces of media (Bucky/Steve/Tony, Castiel/Dean/Sam, Poe/Finn/Rey, Hermione/Harry/Ron). For BTS, it's a similar situation but instead of three main characters the band has 7 members.
The two ships that are canonical/semi-canonical (depending on your interpretation of things like word of god and possible retconning) are Karlnapity and Hardison/Parker/Eliot. I'll start with the latter; feel free to skip this paragraph if you don't want to read through me talking about Leverage.
If you're not a Leverage fan, you probably are not familiar with this OT3 and may be confused about its popularity considering it is a MUCH smaller fandom than the other ones (only ~9k total fics). Hardison/Parker/Eliot is also the #1 ship in the Leverage fandom tag, whereas the rest of these are generally quite a bit further down in the ship tags. The reason for this is that the relationship dynamic on the show is very intimate, I would say a majority of leverage fans ship the ot3 without question, AND the creators have on multiple occasions encouraged and endorsed the ship. Additionally, they have made the ship canonical (in a sense) by stating that the finale of the original show was meant to end with the three of them in a relationship, so they hold a semi-canonical, word of god status in that sense. However, for much of the show, only Hardison and Parker are explicitly dating and it is my understanding that in the recent revival that is still the case (haven't watched it yet, planning to soon). Still, it is far more canonical than most of the other ships on this list, which is why it's so high up despite being a smaller fandom, and this feeds into why I think Karlnapity is so popular.
Okay! Back to Karlnapity!
Karlnapity is the only ship on this list that has full, in-canon support for it being a romantic, polyamorous ship. That is, as you probably know, incredible rare in fandoms of this size. The three of them are romantically & phsyically affectionate (when they were together) and explicitly involved, which cannot be said for any other ship on the list above.
All this to say, the biggest reasons Karlnapity is so popular are that the fandom is hugely popular right now, the ship involves men, and the relationship is canon.

Good lord, this bracket, though.

Like, if you compare this to perennial femslash bracket favorites from Autostraddle or Ye Olde AE, or femslash convention lineups, or just the most popular AO3 femslash ships by the numbers (always shout-out to toastystats),
*ObamAI voice*
that bracket was ASS

Today, December 6, 2022, I just got the logged-in (10220274) and logged-out numbers (9642246) for AO3 to see what percentage of fanworks are locked on the archive (5.66%), but I didn’t have a baseline for comparison. After poking around I realized I had the AO3 numbers from October 3, 2021 for a Word of Honor stats post:
AO3 total percent locked: 100*(1-(7992330/8240181))= 3.10%
I also found a post by toastystats from 2014 that reported on the percentage of locked RPF M/M (6.2%) vs. M/M for the whole archive (1.2%). Compare to today:
RPF M/M percent locked: 100*(1-(317219/370685))= 14.42%
M/M percent locked: 100*(1-(4644476/4953038))= 6.23%
A lot has changed since 2014, including new megafandoms (see Video Blogging, though BTS isn’t in the RPF tag tree) and a general increase in harassment, both of which might cause more people to lock their fanworks.

Has there been any thought or discussion on how quarintine is effecting how much fanfic is being posted/read and if its an even or uneven spread across ao3? I couldn't find anything but I feel someone must have done something....
Hi!  (And sorry if you asked this ages ago -- I’ve been incredibly busy the past couple months and am just now seeing some of my asks, oops.)
Short answer -- AO3 has been getting a ton of usage lately!  To the point where I haven’t wanted to run any of my automated scripts to scrape data, because I don’t want to further tax their servers.  But AO3 shared some stats.  They have some cool graphs and info about how things like the China AO3 ban factor in -- I encourage clicking through and reading the whole thing.
I’ve also revisualized a few of the stats in a different way, to highlight how things changed January-April (their post was made in April, so I don’t have more recent data).  Basically, the rate of posting new works (especially new chapters) is going up, and so is the rate of page views and engagement with works.  (This doesn’t capture seasonal patterns, though.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Edit: oops, my last graph got left off! this shows differences over the years (there’s also a more granular graph in the original post) -- notice that things have been increasing every year, but there’s a bigger jump from 2019 to 2020 and from January to April than the general trend predicts:

Murderbot Fandom Statistics May 2021
On the 19th of May I scraped the #introductions channel of the Murderbot Diaires 2.0 discord, and StellHex ( @hextrudedcubes) scraped the Murderbot tag on Ao3. Analysis below the cut!
Archive of Our Own Statistics:
Tumblr media
[ID: A line graph of the number of new works in the Murderbot Ao3 tag per fortnight. Overlaid are the release dates for each Murderbot book, the start date of the Murderbot discord and the creation of the discord’s #event-despair-horizon.]
Tumblr media
[ID: A bar chart of the total number of Murderbot Fics on a weekly basis.]
There was a significant delay between the release of All Systems Red and it’s first fic being written. After that we see that the number of fics per week increases steadily after the launch of the 2.0 discord server. This is likely a mixed effect between the supportiveness of the 2.0 server for encouraging writing and representative of the fandom growing steam more widely. In recent weeks >20 fics have been posted a fortnight.
The despair pit, a discord channel for discussing very angsty fic, is a known spot that fanworks come out of and fic writing increased around that time. (#event despair horizon).
On the 19th of May there were 289 fics in the Murderbot tag but only 280 are included in this analysis as 9 of them are locked to logged in archive users.
Shipping Tags:
Category | Number of works Gen         | 240 Other       | 30 F/F           | 2 F/M          | 1 M/M         | 1
Murderbot is not a shippy fandom. 85% of fic is tagged as ‘Gen’ compared to 20% on Ao3 as a whole [1]. A number of the ‘Other’ fics are tagged with Murderbot & ART (rather than Murderbot/ART), suggesting this fandoms deep love for “what ever those two AIs have going on” rather than romantic relationships.
The only relationship slash tags involving Murderbot are Murderbot/ART, Murderbot/Gurathin and Murderbot/Soap Operas.
The sole F/M fic is a Star Wars Relyo crossover. F/F and M/M fics involve either secondary characters or OCs.
Discord Introductions:
Tumblr media
[ID: A line chart of the number of users who mentioned themselves in introductions per day. Dates a labled for the start of the server, Verso and Anrea sharing links, the start of the despair pit and the release of Fugitive Telemetry.]
The Murderbot diaires 2.0 discord started after it was clear the previous discord had been abandoned by it’s mod. The start day had the largest number of people joining the server, and the second largest peak was due to the initial sharing of the join link on Verso’s ( @grammarpedant) tumblr. We can also see that fandom momentum picks around March this year and around Fugitive Telemetry’s release date.
This data isn’t super clear so I’ve also computed the rolling six day average below which makes the increasing number of new users recently more apparent.
Tumblr media
Of the 410 server members 311 (76%)  introduced themselves. Introducing yourself is optional, and this is due to a mixture of lurkers, people checking out the server and not leaving, and people who felt too awkward or just didn’t want to introduce themselves.
Total number of introduced members:
Tumblr media
Methodology Notes:
Ao3 fics were webscraped by StellHex who used the ao3_api tool.
The count of #introductions was webscraped by me using Discord Chat Exporter. I then counted the first instance of a user speaking in that channel as their introduction.
Analysis was completed using numpy/matplotlib.
Final Notes:
If you want to join the discord you can do so here.
I’m happy to send the code and data I used for this analysis. I’ll post it on discord, or flick me a message there if you can’t find it.
In future it would be cool to do an analysis of the emoji usage in #fanworks-gallery and #introductions.

linking to this for my own convenience/tracking, but really this is its own stats post
how do HP F/F, F/M, and M/M ships differ, in terms of what people are writing?
took a lot of inspiration from @toastystats' analysis for all fic on AO3.
filters used: "F/F" = "F/F excluding M/M and F/M", english, wc>=1, otp:true.
1. ship diversity:
(roughly speaking, given that about 5% have multiple categories tagged,) the top three ships make up 2/3 of M/M fic, 1/3 of F/M fic, and 1/4 of F/F fic. Proportionally, there's much more ship centralization in M/M fic, and more ship diversity in F/F fic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
2. work length
same data as in the line graphs posted in the first few parts, so no new insights here (femslash has more short fic, het is longest of the three) -- just a different visualization:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
3. rating
here's how HP fic* compares to all work on AO3:
(*: english, wc>=1, otp:true)
Tumblr media
and how this varies with length:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
very similarly to what toast noticed,
overall, longer work did tend to be more M&E-rated than G&T-rated
but there was a category-based difference between the two adult ratings: while in M/M the % of E-rated fic increased with length, F/F and F/M 'plateaued in explicitness' around 1-10k words.
something particular to HP fic not seen in toast's general AO3 analysis: het fic uniquely plateaued in adult-ness around 10-100k words.
interestingly, M/M works around the 10-100 word range were more likely to be M- and especially E-rated than those at the 100-1k word length.

Good job everyone! We did it! Top genderqueer in fandom! Woo! (graphic from @toastystats wonderful work on AO3 [Fandom stats] Trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse characters on AO3 (Oct 2021)
Proud to be contributing to genderqueer Crowley tag :D
Other fun Good Omens stats:  Aziraphale is more often tagged agender than nonbinary and both Aziraphale and Crowley get tagged as Trans quite a bit. Crowley’s only number 5 on the list of most gender diverse tags though so come on fandom, we gotta step up our gender fucking game!
