The importance of setting:
Setting is a powerful tool in a writer's arsenal, capable of significantly influencing the mood and atmosphere of any story. The setting provides the backdrop against which the characters interact and the plot unfolds.
One of the primary ways setting impacts mood and atmosphere is through its sensory details. By vividly describing a particular place's sights, sounds, smells, and textures, writers can immerse readers in the story's world, evoking emotions and setting the tone. For example, a gloomy, fog-shrouded forest might create a sense of foreboding and tension, while a sun-drenched beach could evoke feelings of warmth and tranquility.
The relationship between characters and their environment can further enhance the atmosphere. A protagonist navigating a labyrinthine urban landscape filled with neon lights and shadowy alleyways will experience a vastly different journey compared to one exploring a vast, windswept desert.
Effective use of setting involves more than just describing physical surroundings; it requires careful consideration of how these elements contribute to the overall tone and themes of the story.
Ask yourself questions: How does the setting reflect the internal struggles of the characters? How does it influence their motivations and choices?
By weaving the setting into the narrative, writers can create immersive worlds that resonate with readers long after the story ends. Mastering the art of setting allows writers to transport readers to distant realms, where every street corner and hillside becomes a vital piece of the storytelling puzzle.

To Love The Damned
-
Maybe that old saying holds water.
"You cannot love another,
Until you love yourself."
Because try as I might,
I can't seem to get the timing down.
The careful balance of understanding
How love can be presented to you,
Effortlessly,
While also learning what effort
Is expected-
Has exhausted my bones.
To you, I am loved.
Beyond limits,
As easy as breathing.
And while I share the feeling,
That loving you is as easy as existing-
I can't seem to untangle the violence
From my root.
I spend hours away,
Yanking at the core of me,
To express the feelings I hold-
In a way that doesn't feel like
Spilling my blood at your feet.
That doesn't leave me feeling
Like a scribble among humanity.
I guard what is left of me,
With gnawing teeth and resentment.
These parts of me do not belong to you.
To watch the one you love,
Swallow the poison you've created-
Would bring anybody to the brink of madness;
Infect their soul with insanity.
The silence echoes against my being,
Where your laughter once was,
And I feel your hand on my throat-
Or is it mine?

"Character doesn't act traumatized"
The flaw with the criticism of "this character isn't acting traumatized, you need to show how this event changed them" is that a lot of people experience EXTREME traumatic events and think it's normal. Their behavior might change in subtle ways, but they mostly just continue with their life.
This is especially true in children/young characters. See example here:

me, after clearing my schedule to write:
uhhhh it was raining... and dark (and also night) and um... cold i guess?? anyway, something dramatic~ happened
me, stuck in traffic on my way to work:
Rain tumbled through midnight leaves, casting the forest in liquid moonlight. A low growl shook the horizon. Death had come.

Words to use instead of ‘said’
**Using the word ‘said’ is absolutely not a bad choice, and in fact, you will want to use it for at least 40% of all your dialogue tags. Using other words can be great, especially for description and showing emotion, but used in excess can take away or distract from the story.

everyone wants to be
something; do more,
be more. will it ever end?
money, fame, status
things which don't define us -
we already know as much;
why am i not enough?
you are. you always are.
the first one to remind yourself
that simple fact
(from this point on)
should always be you.
"self-sufficient."
