Tidbit Tuesday

She stays quiet for a moment, picking at her nails. “Actually… I would really like to meet my family… I’ve never had one before.”

It surprises him. He thinks that if he were in her situation, he’d find it incredibly scary. And he had prepared for her to say no.

“My sister, she, uh, originally invited me over for family dinner tomorrow. It would be her and her husband and their daughter. But also Eddie and Christopher… would that be too much too fast?”

She thinks about it, tapping her finger on her chin. It makes him smile. “Can I meet Eddie before we go? If he’s going to be my step-father.”

Buck nods quickly, “Yeah. Yes. Whenever you want. He’d love to meet you. Eddie is such a sweetheart. He’s a really good man. You’ll love him. And he’ll love you. I’m sure of it.”

“Okay,” she says softly, sounding a bit shy. “Can I meet him today?”

“Of course. Do you want him to come over to my- to our place, or do you want to go to his and Christopher’s house?”

“Yours,” she answers. Buck expected that. While it’s maybe not her home yet, it would still feel like safer ground for her since she’s already been there and it will be her home until Buck and Eddie find a house.

“I’ll text him once we get home,” Buck promises her with a smile. He can’t wait for them to meet.

“Okay,” she says softly and turns back to look out of the window.

I taught you better than this,” Tommy says, trying to evoke a reaction. It works. Buck rushes forward, raising his hand to Tommy’s face, but Tommy’s faster, blocking the action and hitting right back. Buck doesn’t give up, he keeps moving into Tommy, hitting him, his elbow catching on Tommy’s shoulder hard enough to make him falter. Tommy just smiles at him, grinning wide. “That was good,” he admits, nodding in approval. Buck wipes the sweat from his forehead, moving back into position, jumping on his feet. “Come on, give it to me, hot stuff.” “That name’s not actually bad,” Tommy says. “Yeah?” Buck asks, guard dropping momentarily. It’s all Tommy needs. He seizes the moment raising his arm and pushing at Buck’s shoulder, causing him to stumble. Buck doesn’t have a chance to right himself before Tommy’s lifting his leg, hooking it under Buck’s. Buck lets out a little “oomf” as his back hits the ground, wind momentarily knocked out of him.  Tommy just smirks from him above, leaning over so that his hand rests next to Buck’s face. “Ready to tap out?” Tommy says, eyes flicking to Buck’s lips and back to his eyes. Buck blushes at their closeness, but ever stubborn he doesn’t give in. “Never,” he whispers, wrapping his leg around Tommy’s torso and flipping them so that Tommy’s now on his back. Tommy’s pupils widen, and he lets out a breathless “Fuck.”

But there’s also a firmness to his tone, a sort of finality, like he won’t accept anything else. Like Eddie deserves this kindness he is offering, no doubt about it. Eddie wants to argue anyway, but Buck squeezes his hand, sending a little zing of warmth and fondness through Eddie’s body, and speaks before he can do anything else.

The wood creaks a little ominously beneath them, but Eddie’s content to ignore it when Buck loops his arms around Eddie’s neck. “Even a werewolf?” Buck murmurs. Eddie plants his hands on Buck’s hips, letting his thumbs slip under the hem of Buck’s shirt to stroke over his warm skin. “I’d fight a whole pack of werewolves for you.”

He can be such a dork, and a hopeless romantic. It’s adorable. “If you wanna share?” “Uh, it’s just-” he starts, but cuts himself off with a slight shake of his head. “Nevermind, it’s stupid.” “I’m sure it’s not.” Tommy’s hand – such a big hand, Buck still can’t get over it even after all this time – settles on Buck’s side, over his ribs. “You know you can tell me anything,” he says, and it’s a reminder, a reassurance, but no insistence, no pushing to tell him anyway, always letting Buck lead, letting him come to Tommy with whatever’s on his mind. Buck smiles softly, his fingers tracing over the side of Tommy’s face, from his cheekbone to jaw.  “I know. I was just- I was thinking about how sometimes I feel like-” his smile widens involuntarily, his cheeks heating up, but the words sound sure and confident and true, exactly like he feels about them and this relationship, “Like I’ve been searching for you my whole life.”

“I didn’t have big muscles back then,” he says, rubbing the back of his neck. He smiles wryly. “I wasn’t scrawny, but I definitely didn’t start beefing up until after Abby left me. I thought she was coming back, stupid me, so I wasn’t going to go out drinking alone, and I stopped sleeping around when I fell in love with her, which meant I had a ton of free time with nothing to do except go to the gym, run, hike, and go rock climbing. Helped me to exert energy in, uh, healthier ways than I did before I met her.”

“Exert energy, huh?” Eddie looks him over in a way that has heat spreading through him, and Buck knows he must be imagining it because this is Eddie, and he doesn’t do things like undress Buck with his eyes and stare at his arms like he wants to be pinned to a wall. His mouth is dry, and there’s an odd sort of tension starting to build as Eddie stares at his face, cheeks flushing a lovely shade of pink. Buck licks his lips, biting the inside of his cheek when Eddie’s gaze drops to watch his tongue, swaying forward slightly.

“I found the paperwork,” Athena says, her voice loud and startling. Eddie’s expression changes immediately, his lips curling into a slight frown as he looks away from Buck, the building tension fading before it can go any further.

When I was about to start, I was planning on a short and sweet fic. But then when I was writing... well, whatever part takes over in my brain had a different opinion. It still has a happy ending though! And there's some fluffiness mixed in :)

While editing, my laptop started acting possessed and for some reason ao3 saved 14 drafts of this. After restarting I continued editing one. Hopefully I published the correct one 😬

After a few disastrous months, Buck is back in therapy and starts scribbling in a notebook he keeps hidden from everyone. The book even has a lock to prevent anyone taking a peek inside. The 118 starts worrying about it, but Eddie decides to wait until Buck is ready to talk to anyone. Until one night he accidentally sees what's inside.

Snippet:

Chimney dramatically lets himself fall on the spot next to Eddie on the couch. “So, what’s the deal with him?” his gum pops after he finishes his sentence.

“I don’t know,” Eddie says, “Leave it alone.”

“Whatever,” Chimney answers, “You’re no fun.”

Eddie just shrugs. For whatever reason, Buck doesn’t talk about the notebook. He doesn’t share or show anyone. So, Eddie respects his privacy and doesn’t bother him about it.

“Y’know,” Chimney starts, suddenly frowning, “Bobby used to have a notebook, much smaller, but still. He kept a list of all the people he saved.”

“He told me,” Eddie answers. Bobby also told him about his suicidal thoughts and plans. It was a hard conversation. Eddie had lost all hope when Christopher hadn’t contacted him for two months and had been on a very dark edge that his Captain thankfully talked him out of. Now Eddie is back in therapy too. He’s not feeling great, but he’s doing better.

“What if…” Chimney trails off, “Should I be worried? He doesn’t talk about the break-up and Tommy has been avoiding me like the plague. I guess maybe he’s worried about me being a protective big brother.”

“Are you?” Eddie asks him.

“I would be if I knew what happened,” Chimney says. Eddie can see the genuine worry on Chimney’s face. The man often likes to tease Buck, and yes occasionally goes a little too far, but he loves Buck. Eddie has seen them grow closer over the years and they truly act like brothers. He’s sure that Chimney would easily pull the big protective brother card if needed. Maddie right next to him.

“Are you sure about this? It’s permanent,” Tommy looks around the tattoo parlor and then at him with his eyebrows raised.

“Yes, dad, I’m sure,” Evan rolls his eyes. “If you’re gonna play mom right now, leave me alone then,” Tommy hits his shoulder. “Ow! It’s painful.” Evan hits back.

“Don’t be a brat, Evan,” beautiful electric blue eyes look at him with a challenge to say something, but before he can Tommy continues.  “I don’t care if you will or won’t do it, I just want to be sure you’re  absolutely confident about this decision.”

“I am,” Evan nods with a little smile at his older friend. “I am. I want to do it for myself. Always wanted.”

“Ok, then,” Tommy nods and at that moment they hear the master calls Evan’s name. “Let’s go and take your tattoo virginity then,” brunette claps his hands and Evan can’t stop loud laugh.

When he is finally in a seat and the master starts their work, Tommy asks, “do you need to hold my hand?” Blue eyes look at him with kindness, but with disgust to the needle. 

“Yeah, please,”

 That’s all Tommy needs to grab his free hand and squeeze it, showing his support. He leans closer to him and whispers, “just blink twice if you would need me to play like I fainted if you will want to run away.”
