Chicken and waffles
Chicken and waffles is a classic Southern dish that combines crispy fried chicken with fluffy waffles, topped with sweet syrup. The savory and sweet flavors create a perfect balance, making it a popular comfort food. The chicken is typically seasoned with spices like garlic powder and smoked paprika, while the waffles are made with a simple batter of flour, sugar, baking powder, and buttermilk.…

I imagine in his early days, Alastor was an energetic little hobbit child romping around the woods and catching frogs and helping his wonderful mama in the kitchen any chance he got.
I’ve had moments like these, where I eat an old favorite (namely Thai-style ketchup fried rice) and suddenly I’m six years old again in my grandparents' kitchen with the orange tiled countertops and the humid smell of a South Carolina rain coming down outside.

You have gumbo all over your face!
PANEL 6: A young black woman with freckles laughs and smiles down at her son. She’s dressed in a high-necked blouse and her hair is done up in a pinned back Victorian up-do. i have been doing some light experimentation this winter with miso and gochujang and i can tell you now they are two of the best substances on this green earth. a quick list of ways i have used them so far:
spoonful of each in the broth where you cook the ramen (big for miso, small for gochujang), along with half the flavor packet and a 7-minute hard boiled egg
teeny tiny amount of gochujang (like, 1/4tsp per cup max) in hot chocolate to add richness, depth, and spice
miso in the water where you cook the red lentils, combined with a can of butternut squash soup and a can of coconut milk, big heaping spoonful of gochujang for warmth and heat
2tbsp brown sugar, 1tbsp melted butter, 1tbsp gochujang; mixture swirled into sugar cookie dough (this is from a nyt cooking recipe by eric kim) or whatever other baked goods could benefit from a little kick.
pal of mine mentioned maple syrup + gochujang as a condiment, which would be spectacular on many roasted veggies (carrots, brussels sprouts, potatoes, beets, etc), or as a ham glaze, or on fried chicken (fried chicken & cornmeal waffles with maple-gochujang sounds completely incredible)
my budget is tighter than usual this winter and i can tell you that having gochujang and miso to play with is really bringing joy to what would otherwise be a season of mac & cheese, ramen, very basic soups, etc.

[ID: First image shows a breaded and fried 'chicken' cutlet on a ciabatta roll; second image is of two cutlets, one of them cut open to show a stringy cross-section. End ID]
Vegan fried chicken
This gluten-free, pakoda-inspired fried 'chicken' recipe uses thinly sliced onion and chickpea flour as its base, and can be flavored to suit any recipe. The batter is breaded and then fried twice to create a crispy cutlet that's perfect for sandwiches, chicken and waffles, chicken nanban, or any other recipe that calls for fried chicken.
Recipe under the cut!
Patreon | Tip jar
Serves 4.
Ingredients:
For the chicken:
2 medium yellow onions (310g total), very thinly sliced
1 Tbsp total dried oregano, parsley, rosemary, and/or thyme
2 tsp smoked paprika
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp yellow mustard powder
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp ground white pepper
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste
1 vegetarian ‘chicken’ stock cube, crumbled
1/2 tsp salt
About 2 cups besan (chickpea flour), divided
To fry:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup rice flour
4 tsp potato starch (optional)
Remaining spice mix
2 Tbsp egg replacer (I used Bob's Red Mill) + 1/4 cup water
1 tsp vegetarian 'chicken' stock concentrate (optional)
For a gluten-free version, replace the flour with more rice flour and a tablespoon of cornstarch.
Instructions:
For the chicken:
1. Mix salt and all spices and herbs in a small bowl. Halve onions lengthwise (through the root), lay each half cut-side-down, and slice as thinly as possible (or use a mandolin).
2. In a large bowl, mix onions, 1 cup besan, and most of the spice mixture. Let sit for about 1 hour to allow the onions to release moisture.
3. Stir to work in released moisture. Stir in additional besan (up to 1 1/2 cup) until dough-like in texture.
To fry:
1. Fill a deep fryer or medium-sized pot with several inches of a neutral oil and heat it to 340 °F (171 °C). A chopstick placed in the oil should slowly form small bubbles around its tip.
2. Mix flour, rice flour, potato starch, and remaining spice mix in a shallow bowl or large plate.
3. Mix egg replacer, water, and stock concentrate in a shallow bowl.
4. Form onion mixture into pieces of the desired size and shape. Coat in the dry mixture, then in the wet ('egg') mixture, and then in the dry mixture again.
This will be easier if you use one hand to coat the pieces in the dry mixture, and the other to coat them in the wet mixture.
5. First deep fry. Carefully lower one chicken piece into the oil and fry without disturbing for about 3 minutes, until flour coating is lightly golden brown. Flip over and continue to fry for another 3 minutes. Use chopsticks or a slotted spatula to remove the chicken breast onto a wire cooling rack or paper-towel-lined plate.
6. Use a slotted spoon to remove any bits of batter from the oil and re-check the temperature. Repeat with each chicken piece.
7. Second deep fry. Increase the heat slightly to raise the temperature of the oil to 355 °F (179 °C). Re-fry each piece for about a minute, flipping once halfway through. Set aside.

no fucking way the eggs benedict is only 500 cals YOU DONT GET THAT EGG FORM FROM JUST EATING 500 CALS!!!!!!
Nah you KNOW that's definitely not all Eggman is eating for breakfast lol. He'll present that meal as if it's all he eats like "hey look at me with my small 500 cal meal >:)" and nobody believes it anyway but he likes to think they do, looking all smug and sure of himself lol
But Orbot and Cubot just sigh and shake their heads because when this man is at home, he eats a full on huge feast of a breakfast daily. On the biggest treat days he likes breakfast in bed with his Eggs Benedict and french toast, more bacon, eggs, mash potatoes, biscuits, cereal.
And let's not forget his breakfast dessert! Waffles (takeover ref to when asked what he likes for breakfast) with lots of syrup and cream. And/or also a huge stack of thick pancakes with glorious syrup and butter like the Sonic Channel art
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With that he's ready to start to day! Orrr he might need to go back to sleep for a little nap first to sleep it off a bit hehe
Plus he's got all his cookbook recipes to eat throughout the day! His big sandwiches for brunch, the Eggsquisite Lunch, Poppin' Eggcorn for a snack, Egg Dogs, his bountiful box of chicken and fries meal, and batch of Evil Cookies as final dessert!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe a big bowl of shaved ice too, or some of the many fish he's able to catch with his genius device if the Pecky don't steal them all first!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All those calories are surely adding up plentifully at the end of the day!
It's quite the contrary, no secret how he manages to get and keep his glorious egg shaped figure. He eats very well because he knows he deserves it! He does indeed acknowledge that it's how he maintains it in the cookbook, he intentionally seeks to do so to keep living up to his iconic name and beauty 🥰💜

Brunch/Breakfast for Dinner Recipe: Chicken and Waffles
Tumblr media
TIME: ★★✰✰
PRICE: ★★★✰
EASE: ★★✰✰
CLEANUP: ★✰✰✰
This recipe is a little bit of work, and so far the lowest ranked on the cleanup scale (but I am biased because I HATE cleaning up the waffle iron stuff.)
BUT!
It's SUCH a great dinner/brunch! Especially if you have someone willing to help you cook/cleanup! There are two parts to this recipe- the fried chicken and the waffle. If you already have recipes for those, feel free to use them! If not, here are some basic recipes I've found. Crispy Fried Chicken (AlphaFoodie) Homemade Waffle Recipe (SpendWithPennies) Top the dish with some bacon, green onion, and syrup! (Or whatever toppings you like with Chicken and Waffles!)

Low-Calorie Vegan Meals for Weight Loss
As someone who is actively trying to lose weight, I have recently been scouring the internet for healthy, low-calorie vegan recipes to make when I’m not busy exercising or saving health posts on Pinterest. While vegan diets are typically healthier than those that include meat or other animal products, there is still a lot of high-calorie, high-fat, highly processed junk food that is vegan friendly. On my weight loss journey, I have cut out nearly all processed junk food (with the occasional slip up because I am weak on my period) and am determined to maintain a healthy diet. Weight loss has never come easy for me, and it has only gotten harder with added health problems that slow down my metabolism and medicines that cause weight gain. Though I believe everyone is valid no matter their weight, I am not personally happy in my body; I feel sluggish and heavy and just plain unhealthy. So, if you are looking to lose weight like me, diet is a good place to start. Therefore, without further ado, here are some low-calorie, easy to make vegan recipes that can aid you on your weight loss journey:

Cooking anon here 🙋🏼‍♀️
In the topic of southern dishes, what are your favourites and that you think everyone should taste in their lives. I’d like to discover the southern cuisine
Personally I love anything pasta and potatoes there’s not much variety with that out there hence why I’d like to learn to cook various dishes.
Next time I cook, I want to make either a shepherds pie or lasagna😋
🥘-
I have put a few of my favorites in the story. Biscuits and gravy with real biscuits, 100% everyone needs to try it. Fried pickles. Fried chicken, and you can add waffles. Pimento cheese, but the homemade kind. Sour cream pound cake. Fried green tomatoes are amazing! Potato candy, sounds weird, it’s good, trust me. Goodness…hmm, where are all my southern moots? What is something that is a southern dish everyone should try?
Ooh! For a snack, glass bottle Coca Cola with planters peanuts in it. Coca Cola cake is genius and amazing. I’m from Georgia, so there’s a lot of Coke in recipes 🤣
I wouldn’t say pasta is huge in southern cooking. But Chicken and dumplings are amazing. It’s not pasta at all.
@misshinson @itsafishall you’re from the south right? Who else?

Gourmet Fried Chicken and Waffles
Tumblr media
Eat them together and its a combination of sweet, salty, and crispy!
A comfort food restaurant in town sadly closed when the owner retired, and they made the best chicken and waffles I’ve had! They made maple butter and a sriracha aioli which made the waffles to die for! This is an involved recipe, be warned. Let’s break it down!
The chicken needs to sit in buttermilk for a while, and you’ll want to make the maple butter and aioli before you serve. This is written in paragraph form, and I hope I’ve made it easy to read!
Fried Chicken
Take 2 lb boneless chicken (light, dark, whatever) and put it in a container filled with 2 c buttermilk to sit for at least a couple hours.
In a large bowl, mix 2 cups of flour. Add 1 tsp of salt, 1/4 tsp paprika, and 1/2 tsp black pepper. To flavor that chicken add between 1/4 tsp to 1 tsp each of herbs and spices you like, such as garlic powder, onion powder, tarragon, thyme, oregano, ground mustard, ground ginger, white pepper, green pepper, and /or chili powder. You can even just do a tablespoon or two of curry powder if you want. Sift it all up with a fork. Store until usage.
Once your aioli, maple butter, and waffle batter are made, you need to fry the chicken. Start by taking out chicken from the buttermilk and dredging it in the flour mixture so both sides are coated
Fill a skillet with enough neutral oil (I used veggie oil) that your chicken cutlets are half submerged. Bring to heat on medium high, that a little drop of buttermilk sputters when dropped in. Put cutlets in a few at a time, as to not overcrowd and reduce the temp of the oil. Once browned flip them over with a spatula or tongs. After both sides brown, put the chicken on a towel or a baking rack to sop up any extra oil.
Sriracha Aoili
Mix 1 cup mayo with 1 TBS of sriracha. Mix. Halve this if you want.
Maple Butter
Melt 1/2 c butter in a bowl. I don’t own a microwave, so I double broiled it on the stove. Add 2 TBS of maple syrup and mix. Put maple butter in a smaller container to chill and harden.
Buttermilk Pancakes
In a bowl, sift 2 c flours (I used 1 1/2c all purpose and 1/2 c buckwheat for earthiness), 2 tsp powder, 2 tsp soda, 2 TBS sugar, and 1 tsp salt in a bowl.
Whisk 1 egg. Add it to the bowl with 1 tsp vanilla extract, 2 TBS neutral oil, and 1 c buttermilk. It will create a thick paste.
Whisk in 1 more c buttermilk until lumps disappear.
Heat up your waffle iron, and I recommend putting in batter after you heat the oil for the chicken, but not before you put the chicken in.
Shitty Picture
Tumblr media
I don’t own a traditionally shaped waffle maker. We left it when we moved out of my granny unit (too small for two), and when I went online to replace it, I saw the bubble waffle maker and that was that!
