Wailing about “you love me so you’ll love my child” but w melleanor and silver
"—and do not let Vanrouge within twenty meters of the kitchens, is that clear, Counselor? Inform the kitchen staff that they have my exact permission to maim him on sight with the nearest sharp object. Oh, do not duck your face like a quivering kitten as if I cannot see that grimace, Counselor— that man has survived much worse and scraped through with life and limb and still persists to terrorize us all with his presence, isn't that right, my dear one?"
From within her arms, Lilia's child coos and babbles something far more intelligent than her trailing, fretful advisors back at her, and she taps a dark painted talon delicately against its plush cheek in fond agreement.
Lilia's child.
Meleanor rolls the words silently within her mouth, holds them there to taste the strange, but pleasant, flavor of their meaning.
Of all the fae in all their lands, who would have ever dared to dream that Lilia Vanrouge would take to a child like a fish to water, or a fledgling to the skies?
She can still hear him now, grumbling and griping so about the burden of children, their helplessness and neediness as unnecessarily weak creatures. In a rare form of mercy, not once did she pry— for how could she, when she knew the answer even if it was not in specifics? When fae were perishing at the hands of humankind's avaricious cruelty, how could she dare chastise him when she was so certain that Lilia's bitterness only existed towards himself?
Her hypothesis had been proven correct when her most trusted General had been present for Malleus' hatching, a softness that she had only seen once before smoothing the harsh lines of his battle-weary gaze. Perhaps she had the right of bias; it was only correct that anyone melt at the sight of her darling son, chirping and mewling miniature fonts of emerald flame.
But that softness had reappeared tenfold when Lilia had knelt before her in the privacy of her chambers where no other fae save for two were ever allowed, revealing the swaddled contents of his cloak with a desperate, fervent need for approval.
He woke for me, she remembers her oldest friend confessing in a voice choked with awe and an emotion that had nearly frightened her (her!) with its intensity. Meleanor, do you understand what this means? He is the son of our enemy, lost and forgotten by time, and he woke for me.
Oh, she had understood as perfectly then as she does now. It was for that reason alone that she had stayed her hand from where it had been readied to smite the child from Lilia's arms, to strip it from existence out of fear that it had somehow bewitched the one fae with more reason to detest humanity than all the rest.
True love was so rare in this world; it had taken her centuries to find her heart's desire. How could she wrest that from Lilia, as he kneels before her and bares his soul, staring down at the sleeping infant cradled in his arms with a delicate strength she did not know him to possess and the dazed look of a parent struck with the dazzling knowledge that the child they hold is more perfect than any creature alive on the earth?
She could not— the proof of which rests in her arms and happily teethes on strands of her gleaming hair, warm and soft and heavy in the sweet way of babes.
"And that is why we cannot allow your pathetic wretch of a father to ruin the celebration of your first blessing, isn't that right— Silver?"

Avatar Cycle Trivia
Avatar Wan
Wan's name translates to "ten thousand" in Mandarin Chinese, as he lived ten thousand years before Avatar Korra. His name is also a pun on "one", as in Avatar number one.
Wan wore the colour of each of the four nations during his battle against Vaatu. His robes were yellow and orange (air), his armbands were green (earth), his sash was blue (water), and his scarf was red (fire).
In addition to becoming the first Avatar, Wan is also the first true firebender, as he was the first person to learn firebending from a dragon.
By fusing with Raava during Harmonic Convergence, Wan is technically the oldest Avatar to be identified, being 21 at the time.
The Earth Kingdom battlefield where Wan died is the same field that Zuko visits millennia later in Zuko Alone (Book 2: Episode 7). Interestingly, Wan first appeared in Beginnings, Part 1, which was the seventh episode of Legend of Korra, Book 2: Spirits.
Avatar Yangchen
Yangchen is the only known Avatar to have a sibling (Jetsun).
Yangchen is technically the first Avatar to have an established Team Avatar (not counting Wan and Raava).
Yangchen had split-personality disorder with her past lives, where she essentially suffered from nightmares of her past lives bleeding into her present self.
Yangchen's companion Kavik is the first person ever seen get chi-blocked.
Yangchen did not like the idea of people creating statues of herself in the future. Ironically, she was greatly revered in the Four Nations, and a statue each was built in both the Eastern and Western Air Temples.
Avatar Kuruk
Kuruk is currently the only known Avatar whose predecessor and successor were both women (Yangchen and Kyoshi respectively).
Kuruk had more lovers in 3 decades than Kyoshi did in over 2 centuries (the true story is more tragic).
Kuruk had a habit of challenging random people to feats of strength, which makes him the only known Avatar in history to have participated in an Agni Kai.
Kuruk was the best hunter and tracker in the history of the Four Nations. It's said there was nothing he couldn't hunt or track down (that includes spirits).
Kuruk is the only known Avatar to enter the Spirit World after death. Considering that only people with a special connection to the Spirit World can enter at death (such as Iroh and Yue), this means Kuruk must have had a spiritual connection rivalling that of most Air Nomad monks or nuns.
Avatar Kyoshi
Kyoshi is the only known Avatar known to be of mixed nationality; her father was from the Earth Kingdom, while her mother was a renegade Air Nomad.
Kyoshi had a rare condition with her earthbending where she could move large objects with ease but had difficulty in moving smaller objects (Suffering From Success).
Kyoshi has witnessed more passings of Sozin's Comet than anyone else, with three (not counting Lao Ge).
Kyoshi learned the secret to immortality from Lao Ge, which led her to have the longest lifespan of any Avatar.
Kyoshi has threatened both the Earth King and the Firelord.
Avatar Roku
Roku and Firelord Sozin share the same birthday.
Roku has been featured in the introduction sequences of both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
Roku is the only known Avatar to appear old when he was called upon by the current Avatar.
When Roku entered the Avatar State for the first time, he destroyed the Fire Sage Temple.
Roku's dragon Fang is the only animal companion ever seen in the Spirit World.
Avatar Aang
It took Aang longer than any Avatar in history to become fully realized, being over a century old.
Aang has a scar on his back and on his foot, because of how electricity works.
Aang choosing four toys out of thousands – to identify him as the Avatar as these four toys were the same ones that past Avatars had chosen for generations when they were children – was the same procedure used by the Tibetan Buddhist monks to recognize the next reincarnation of the Tulku Lama.
Aang has met the original source of every bending art: a flying bison for air, the Moon Spirit for water, badgermoles for earth, and two dragons for fire.
Aang is the first Avatar to have his picture taken.
Avatar Korra
At four years old, Korra is the youngest Avatar in history to be identified.
Korra is the first Avatar to learn spiritbending.
Korra is the only Avatar to break out of bloodbending without the use of the Avatar State (sorry, Aang).
Korra is the only Avatar to have killed a member of her own family (Unalaq).
Korra is the first known person to ever tame a polar bear-dog (Naga).
Miscellaneous
Wan and Roku are the only two Avatars to die in combat.
Roku and Aang are the only two Avatars to fight a volcano. Aang was successful, while Roku died.
Aang and Korra are the only two Avatars to ever be defeated in the Avatar State.
Aang and Kyoshi are the only two Avatars to ever get hit by lightning. Ironically, when Kyoshi was hit by lightning, her chakras were opened and she gained the ability to enter the Avatar State; conversely, Aang's chakras were blocked and he was unable to enter the Avatar State.
Kuruk and Roku are the only two Avatars to have been identified the "traditional" way in their respective nations at 16; Wan fused with Raava at 21, Kyoshi was identified at 16 when she recited Kuruk's poem, and Yangchen, Aang and Korra were identified at younger ages.
Yangchen, Aang, and Korra are the only Avatars to have been identified at younger ages than 16.
Wan, Aang, and Korra are the only Avatars who are modeled after real-life people. Wan is modeled after co-creator Bryan Konietzko (but with cooler hair); young Aang is modeled after Arjuna, Sifu Kisu's son (but Aang is bald), while adult Aang is modeled after co-creator Mike DiMartino; and Korra is modeled after various female MMA fighters, most notably Gina Carrano.
Roku and Korra are the only two Avatars who have worn an outfit from each of the four nations on-screen.
Roku and Korra are the only two Avatars to have connections to royalty. Firelord Zuko, and thus every following Firelord, are descendants of both Roku and Sozin, whereas Korra's father was a member of the Northern Water Tribe's royal family, and was later elected as the chief of the newly independent Southern Water Tribe.
When Kyoshi first met Yangchen, she (Kyoshi) mistook Yangchen for her own mother.
When Kyoshi first met Kuruk, she almost drowned her physical body trying to communicate with him.
Roku and Yangchen are the only two Avatars to have hugged the current Avatar at the time (Aang and Kyoshi respectively).
Wan, Korra, and Kuruk are the only Avatars to refer to Raava by name, although the latter (Kuruk) had never met Raava.
Yangchen, Kuruk, and Aang are the only Avatars to have invented an airbending technique. By extension, Kuruk is the only person outside of the Air Nomads to invent an airbending technique (he didn't get his mastery tattoos, what a shame).
Aang and Korra are the only two Avatars to learn energybending.
Kyoshi, Roku, and Aang are the only Avatars to use bending after their respective deaths.
Kyoshi, Roku, and Aang are also the only Avatars to have descendants (but let's be realistic, so did Kuruk).
Aang and Korra both learned their native element from a companion of the previous Avatar, and their final element from a descendant of the previous Avatar. Aang learned airbending from Monk Gyatso, a companion of Roku, and learned firebending from Zuko, Roku's great-grandson. Korra learned waterbending from Katara, Aang's wife, and learned airbending from Tenzin, Aang and Katara's youngest son.
That's all the fun facts I could find.

Nikola Tesla on Human Energy
Tumblr media
In an article written in 1900 titled “The Problem of Increasing Human Energy,” Nikola Tesla shares his ideas aimed at revolutionizing the way energy is generated, transmitted, and utilized, with the ultimate goal of enhancing human well-being and progress.
Tesla starts with his philosophical perspective on human life–what is it, and where is it going? He implies that human life is a movement, and since the existence of movement naturally implies a body which is being moved and a force which is moving it, then wherever there is life, there is a mass moved by a force. Since action and reaction are coexistent (Newton’s third law of motion), then human movement, along with all movement in the universe, is rhythmical. He explains how we are witness to this rhythm in the motion of the stars, the surging and ebbing of the oceans, the changing of seasons, and the infinitely varied phenomena of organic life. Tesla then identifies humanity as a unitary whole, and comes to the conclusion that the same general laws of movement that govern the whole physical universe must be applicable to all living things, including humankind, and we may understand this movement by using mechanical principles. Consequently, Tesla implies we may measure human energy using the formula for kinetic energy, E=MV²/2, which is one of the fundamental physics equations that describes a moving object's energy. E represents energy, M being human mass, and V a hypothetical velocity. Tesla goes on to consider humans analogous to machines and asks how do we increase the energy of this machine positively and decrease the negative forces decelerating it? In answering this question, Tesla suggests:
Promoting marriage
Having more children and raising them to a higher velocity, or enlightenment, than their parents
Attention to health
Improving quality of drinking water
Providing healthful food to those in need
Encouraging a vegetarian diet rather than a carnivorous one
Discouraging artificial food
Moderation of exercise between both mind and body
Discouraging bad habits with alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee, and other stimulants
Discouraging gambling
Improving hygiene, education, and morals
Reducing ignorance, stupidity, imbecility, religious fanaticism, etc.
Improving the productivity of soil by electrical means
Increasing the workforce
Ending warfare by developing machines (remote controlled robots, drones, etc.) to fight battles leading to fewer human casualties
Encouraging peace by bringing humans in closer contact
Improving methods of manufacturing (i.e., coal, gas, iron, aluminum)
Withdrawing from traditional energy sources and tapping into renewable energy
Tesla shares his invention of a radio controlled boat and its possible use. He also shares his experiments involving burning of nitrogen in the atmosphere, wireless transmission of power, and more. He discusses his vision for harnessing natural forces to help increase the energy needs of humanity. He proposes a global system of wireless power transmission, using the earth as a conductor and waterfalls as a power source. He also explores the possibilities of interplanetary communication and ideas related to tapping into cosmic energy sources and utilizing them for the betterment of humankind.
Tesla finishes his article saying:
"I anticipate that many, unprepared for these results, which, through long familiarity, appear to me simple and obvious, will consider them still far from practical application. Such reserve, and even opposition, of some is as useful a quality and as necessary an element in human progress as the quick receptivity and enthusiasm of others. Thus, a mass which resists the force at first, once set in movement, adds to the energy. The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter — for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way. He lives and labors and hopes with the poet who says:
"Schaff’, das Tagwerk meiner Hände, Hohes Glück, dass ich’s vollende! Lass, o lass mich nicht ermatten! Nein, es sind nicht leere Träume: Jetzt nur Stangen, diese Bäume Geben einst noch Frucht und Schatten."
(Daily work — my hands’ employment, To complete is pure enjoyment! Let, oh, let me never falter! No! there is no empty dreaming: Lo! these trees, but bare poles seeming, Yet will yield both food and shelter!)
*Goethe’s “Hope." Translated by William Gibson, Com. U. S. N.*

Writing Weapons (6): Magical Weapons and Warfare
Material, Size and Shape
Solid, natural material like stone, wood or bone. The boen can be from a ritually sacrificed animal, a human ancestor/sacrifice, a hero or a saint, or a slain enemy.
Crystal or precious or semi-precious stone: good at storing and intensifying magical energy.
Elonged shape, like a wand or staff. May be disguised as an everyday elonged object like a pen or a walking stick.
Can be of any size, smaller objects often disguised as everyday objects; large, stationary magical items (like a statue) can be a landmark everyone knows about
A religious connection, like the weapon being sacred to a goddess, blessed in a temple, manufactured by monks, forged by a god, bestowed to the hero by a deity, etc.
Inherited through generations
It can only be given, not obtained via force or theft.
The manufacture of the weapon involves a ritual and a sacrifice.
How It Works
The use of a magical weapon is seldom purely physical - there must be a mental effect, like the user concentrating, casting a spell, or being born of a certain bloodline.
The damage incurred by a magical weapon may be invisible
Damage caused by a magical weapon may only be felt by the victim after a lag, when it's too late to seek help.
The weapon may affect the target's mind rather than the body (robbing the person of the will to live, love, or fight)
Many magical weapons are element-specific (like fire, water, air, etc.)
The weapon may be capable of hitting hidden targets
The user needs magic training (like directing energy, mental focus, power raising) to use the weapon. Otherwise, the magic of the weapon might kill him.
Charging and Cleansing
A magical weapon often needs to be magically fuelled ("charged") to be used.
This can be by a certain person, at a certain location, involving (religious) rituals, perhaps even involving sacrifices.
Sometimes, the weapon may be charged by leaving it lying in running water, or exposed to sunlight or the light of a full moon.
After use, the weapon may need to be cleansed. The ritual to cleanse the weapon can be equal to the ritual used to charge the weapon.
Fictional Complications
The weapon only works for a specific period after being charged.
The weapon only works in the hand of certain people - male virgin, post-menopausal crones, etc.
The weapon depends on the user's attitudes and beliefs. What if the weapon only works for someone who is free from fear, or has an unshakable faith in the fact that the Earth is flat?
The weapon only works if the user know the true name of the victim
The weapon only works if the user is in a state of altered consciousness - they cannot be waken up.
It takes time for the user to wake the weapon up and direct herwill at the desired outcome.
Magic requires extreme concentration, which can be difficult to get in the middle of a raging battle.
The weapon ay work only in the presence of a certain element (water, airm eath, fire)
How to Defeat a Magician
For the magician, the primary weapon is his mind, and the ability to concentrate in order to channel his/her powers to the target.
If your MC is a magician, show how he recites his spells (so that he'll be able to cast them correctly under stress) and undergoes mental strength exercises.
The best time to attack a magician would be right after she finishes casting a difficult spell and suffering the aftermaths (momentary lack of power, mental sluggishness, etc.)
Magic in Warfare
There may be a single magician serving as an advisor to the commander-in-chief, or each legion might have their own magician, with different specializations.
There may be specialized magician units, like engineering or medical units. Groups of magician-soldiers are also plausible.
Magicians can fill the role of consultants, astrologers, prophets, psychologists and priests. They determine an auspicious date for battle, bless the banners and all for the favor of the gods.
Magicians can create protective spells which deflect bullets, arrows and sword blows. They may even invent a device that places shields on the wearer.
Protection or healing spells may take time to carry out, which means only the elite or the most valued soldiers will be given the previllege - this can cause resentment and lead to interesting dynamics betwen men who are desperate to survive battle.

earth contact lens concept
Tumblr media
if earth were human i think it would be a neat idea to have him wear contact lenses. it kinda fits with how he idealizes himself so much and thinks he is better than everyone but in reality he is just the same as everyone else.

Just saying
My favorite part of the 2012Splinter only wanted warriors and that’s why he was training them from tots because vendetta!!! argument is how it literally makes no sense if you’ve watched the first episode.
Literally. Part One, Ep One.
Where we’re shown that they’ve never been on the surface. Not once. Probably haven’t seen it through more than glimpses through manhole covers.
If he was readying warriors, why would they not have a lay of the land? Why not give them the experience of surface travel? Impromptu missions or carefully crafted objectives? If he was making a tiny mutant armada, why on earth would they be naive to a probable battlefield?
And why not have the battle ground mapped out? Why not give them a run down before they leave of, “Enemies exist here, here, here. Stay away from these areas” or the like instead of Don’t use public restrooms? Why not already have a system set up of everyone’s job and purpose, aka, Leo being leader?
And what kind of general keeps his soldiers locked up? Why shelter them from everything for fifteen years if you want to throw them into insane battles?
Why send them into unfamiliar territory unless you’re confident that there is no immediate danger? With no battle experience outside of each other? So much so that they can’t fight properly as a team?
They can defend themselves aptly, but in all seriousness, they are so unfit for war that it’s insane. That’s something they have to learn as the seasons pass by!
And then later on, Splinter’s just like: Nope. Not safe up there. Guess you’re living down here for the next several years. Oh well.
You’d think he’d immediately begin intensive training to ready them for this coming war now that he has concrete proof that there are still dangers out there. Seriously- what kind of general cares about some rando dad and his daughter? He’s got a war to prepare for! What exactly does he get out of letting them go save lives?
Literally the only reason ANY of this is happening is because his lil’ boys continually go DADDY PLEASE and he gives in because he’s a weak man. Father trumps sensei. Unfortunate. /aff
If he really is some kind of general who’s been readying his children for war for 15 years, then he needs to reevaluate some things. How do you spend the last fifteen years doing everything that you would have learned as the upcoming leader of the Hamato clan wrong?
That’s impressive. Fifteen years of utter failure.
Has to be a record somewhere, I’m just saying.

Dinaurian Siblings Brunto and Stega
Tumblr media
Fueled by Revenge, Intent on Purification, By Dromia’s Will
“To be Dinaurian is to represent perfection. Yes, an ideal world, the place that our people have dreamed of creating for countless generations, we will be the ones to finally embody that vision!”
“And as for you? Well… as it happens, you have no place existing in our ideal world….”
Brunto and Stega are dinaurian siblings, a pair working as spies who hide from mankind and dinaurians alike. As they go about their objective, they use equipment that was developed by their late mother, a mad scientist named Dromia. Dromia never made it to Earth, but unbeknownst to anyone else her two children did. Now that Brunto and Stega have awakened, they’re intent on picking up right where their mother left off when she was killed.
The siblings, themselves, don’t have much choice in the matter, anyways. They link directly with their advanced suits and technology through a port inside of their brains (very similar to another character of mine).
As Brunto and Stega conduct their plans and carry out their objective, they always keep themselves hidden, using their technology to their benefit. Because of their mother’s death, they won’t rest until they’ve eliminated humanity. Even more important than that, though, is that they achieve their revenge against all dinaurians, King Dynal, and one final girl who shouldn’t even be alive anymore…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For their battle forms, rather than transforming into a vivosaur Brunto and Stega use their suits for combat. All of their equipment they use to fight was also originally developed by Dromia, but Stega, being the one with immense technical knowledge, has made some improvements on the design since, including a holographic invisibility-cloak interface.
Tumblr media
Using an old tissue sample previous thought to have been destroyed, Brunto and Stega’s objective involves creating a miniaturized (but still massive) version of Guhnash, an advanced copy to be used as a tool of destruction! This “improved” version takes traits from all three of its previous brains, since now its actions are able to be remotely controlled.
This “new Guhnash is 50 meters long (roughly the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa). Like the original, its entire body functions as a living weapon, although the previous weakness of its 3 brains has now been remedied. If Brunto and Stega are able to complete its construction, it will surely reign a vengeful wave of benevolent terror over the entire Earth…
There is one thing, or rather, one person with the power to stop them, though. Our heroes just have to realize who that is first…

Record of Ragnarok - Male!Reader
Warnings - Mentions of Adult Situations. Jerkass Gods being Jerkasses.18+ Only.
Image from Google.
So, I may have started Record of Ragnarok yesterday. It’s a bit of slow start, but I find the concept and character designs fascinating, so I’m pretty intrigued!
I’ve also wanted to write Male!Reader for a while, but muse has been pretty low for me lately. I think this helped, because I’ve got some ~ideas~ kicking around in my brain box haha. This is kind of a prologue of sorts for future shenanigans (Most of which involve a son of Aphrodite sleeping his way through Ragnarok, oops-) Enjoy this blasphemy!
-
The Einherjar were delicious.
Oh, you were certain that was not why Brunhilde had selected the champions of humanity, but it hadn’t escaped your notice the men were gorgeous. Some of the most beautiful men in existence, the most skilled, virile warriors to have ever walked the earth were all gathered in one spot, adrenaline in their veins as they prepared for the battle that would decide humanity’s fate.
And there you were. Stuck on the Heavens side of the Arena, where Mother Aphrodite had insisted you remain, completely unable to interact with any of them.
It was so unfair.
“Do stop pouting, darling.” Aphrodite sipped at her chalice of wine, glancing at you over the head of one of her servants. “You’re bringing down the mood somewhat.”
Round One was over, decided in the gods favour. Lu Bu, the Flying General, the Strongest Warrior in the Three Kingdoms, had been defeated, his soul now gone from the Gods Realm. An absolutely glorious specimen of mortal manhood you would now never share a bed with.
Of course you were pouting.
“Am I being punished for something?” You asked glumly, watching as Thor fought his way through the fallen Lu Bu’s army, charging in to avenge their general, or share his fate. The God of Thunder’s muscled body rippled with power as he tore through his attackers like wet paper, and you bit your lower lip, crossing your legs, heat flaring low in your gut, imagining that strength turned to more pleasurable uses.
“Nonsense, darling.” Aphrodite waved her hand dismissively, a smile playing on her lips. “If I was punishing you, I would have told you about the human “incarnation of desire” currently bedding his way through half the arena.”
You liked this man already, and gave your mother a betrayed look. “What did I do?!”
Aphrodite simply smiled, and turned her attention back to the arena. “Consider the options, dear, and I’ll tell you if you’re right.”
You slumped back in you seat, glowering.
It was not as if there was a lack of options on the Heavens side. Aside from Thor himself, Lord Shiva had sat near you and Aphrodite throughout Round One, his naked torso showing off a flawless physique. His biceps were exquisite and practically begged to be caressed, and his four arms and their possible bedroom applications sent your imagination reeling. Heracles was somewhere around, and you had always wanted the opportunity to fully test the God of Fortitude’s stamina…
But everyone was fixated on the damn fighting that all your attempts at flirtation were largely unnoticed.
So unfair…
But Thor would be celebrating his victory, his blood hot and passions inflamed. Surely Aphrodite wouldn’t object to you going to congratulate him...?
“Mother—”
“Ares, what did you think about the battle?”
You huffed and slumped in your chair as Ares approached, his grumpy expression brightening at your mother’s attention.
You settled for watching the muscles move under Thor’s skin as he began to leave the arena, the bodies of his foes dissolving at his feet. He glanced up into the stands, and you went still as his gaze met yours. For a (only slightly) embarrassing moment you feared he had somehow sensed your thoughts. You caught the tiniest hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his stoic mouth, the faintest tilt of his head in acknowledgment, before turning and continuing on his way, quickly disappearing from sight.
Maybe if I’m quiet nobody will notice me sneak away…
You glanced around. Aphrodite was distracted talking with Ares, who at this moment only had eyes for her. Lord Zeus and Hermes were curiously absent from the King’s balcony, and Lord Shiva was gone too. You knew he was meant for Round Two, so you assumed he must have went to prepare.
Perhaps I should wish him good luck…
You slid out of your seat, casting one more look over your shoulder, then slowly crept towards the exit, careful not to make any noise.
Almost…almost…
Your fingers grazed the cool stone doors. You froze in place, waiting for a scolding, but you heard nothing but the murmur of the crowd, of gods chatting eagerly about the upcoming match.
You pushed the door open slowly, just a enough to slip through. It then closed behind you, leaving you in the dim light of the corridor outside.
Yes.
Elation flared within you, and you barely resisted dancing on the spot, your mind already whirling with possibilities. Biting down a grin, you started walking, glad you had decided to wear your most appealing outfit. There was time before the next Round, and plenty of people to spend time with…
It was, after all, good to consider one’s options.

What on earth is going on with Richard III & what does it have to do with Shakespeare? A somewhat chaotic explanation by me:
So basically okay Richard III aka Richard Plantagenet aka Richard of the house of York was a king of England in the immediate line of succession prior to Shakesepare’s birth, and is part of the War of the Roses tetralogy which is a series of historical plays by Shakespeare depicting English history and culminating in Richard III’s short reign which did not go well because he was killed in battle almost immediately.
Side note, Richard III is one of Shakesepare’s earlier plays and is generally thought of as kind of an early draft of Macbeth - many of the ideas expressed in Macbeth are also in Richard III, namely the killing of innocent children & the idea of killing everyone to become king. (But I personally prefer it to Macbeth because it’s the first Shakespeare play where the character speaks directly to the audience and explains his thoughts! So Shakespeare’s Richard P is very cunty and constantly describing his evil schemes to the audience. He is one of the only Shakespeare characters who speaks the first line of his own play which I think is pretty cool.)
But back to politics, Shakespeare had to portray Richard III as a villain because the current English dynasty, the Tudors had defeated the house of York (of which Richard is famously a son of), so he had to be maligned in the play otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to put it on before Queen Elizabeth. Plus Shax also just loves a good anti-hero I think.
So if you haven’t read it, one of the things that happens in Richard III the play is that Richard has both of his nephews locked in the tower of London and subsequently murdered in a very evil way. It’s a super fucked up murder plot, and since this is an early play by Shakespeare, the style is much more sensationalized violence & less poetic than his later plays. Richard III is an objectively hilarious play as are many of Shax’s early tragedies because they’re just soooo messed up and evil, but anyway.
So, flash forward to 1998. Richard III had been killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field (we think) but no one had actually been able to locate his body. There was a popular theory that it had been tossed into a lake, but no actual proof. So somewhere in England… a lady named Philippa Langley who is… quite a character, read a biography of Richard III, and became incredibly incensed about the portrayal of Richard as an objectively evil character in Shakespeare’s play and in history due to the pressures of the Tudor dynasty, and she set out on this lifelong quest to exonerate Richard III. Due to her field of study, she is now a ‘Richardian’ aka someone dedicated to proving that Richard was really not so bad after all. I have mixed feelings about her and a lot of the shit she says is abjectly ridiculous. All her quotes about Richard iii imply that she’s in love with him and she always kind of talks about having a spiritual connection with him. But that’s not relevant because she kind of never misses & I have no choice but to stan.
Basically, her spiritual connection apparently successfully led her to Richard III’s body! Which was buried underneath a parking garage in Leicestershire. And she gave the direct quote, "I knew in my innermost being that Richard's body lay there" which is an odd thing to say. But she successfully identified the body through mitochondrial DNA and it actually was him! (The part of me that works in criminal defense is obliged to tell you that mitochondrial DNA is pretty spotty and not definitive evidence but for the sake of this essay we’ll say it is). Anyway, that discovery gave a lot of insight into the War of the Roses and Richard’s defeat and was huge news. So after she found his body, she decided to try to find the bodies of his nephews to attempt to prove that Richard didn’t kill them.
If you don’t know, there is a lot of history here… uh… so basically there were two skeletons found beneath the tower of London that people thought were the princes that Richard killed & basically it’s been agreed upon that that was them, it was just a question of whether Richard actually had them killed or if they just died of sickness or being too cold. But this lady now says that those skeletons are not the princes and may be too old!
She claims that after Richard III died at the battle of bosworth, two children emerged who fit the descriptions of the missing princes & made claims to the throne in 1487 and 1493 respectively, but they were thought to be imposters for a long time. However, Langley just uncovered a document which supposedly evidences the princes’ survival and eventual return to England. It seems that they were separated at the tower of london where they were thought to have died, but eventually made their way back to England. So, she hasn’t found their bodies yet but she’s currently trying to, and if she could that would be HUGE because she has the technology to do mitochondrial DNA identification and she might be able to prove that Richard didn’t kill his nephews which would be big historically because what happened to the princes is a huge question mark in history!
The best part of this all is that in the article she wrote about this for National Geographic (which unfortunately is not free to read but I can send screenshots if anyone wants) there’s a part where she says someone asked her what she was hoping to uncover with her investigation and she said “well hopefully a signed document in the princes’ hands describing what happened to them and where they went” and everyone laughed. And then there was just a photo of exactly that kind of document pasted in the article.
A Richardian mic drop if I ever read one.

absurdly long tangent/analysis
EDIT FROM THE FUTURE: this isn't to dissuade anyone from interpreting the canon as they want i just wanted to share my personal opinions based on the preexisting canon that may or may not be very passionate, please just have fun do whatever you want none of this is fact
i really hate how utsuho is flanderized to death and constantly boiled down to "the dumb bird girl" because if you actually sit down and Read her dialogue instead of relying on secondhand information you learn quite a few things about her (when i say this is absurdly long i mean it so keep reading at your own risk)
Tumblr media
extrapolating from her own dialogue:
she actually wanted to blow everything up in th11 for real and it wasnt just a "hehe whoops" kind of thing. she was bestowed an extremely powerful ability and deliberately wanted to use it to cause destruction/take over gensokyo
she is extremely knowledgeable about her ability and job (anything related to nuclear power and regulating the flames of blazing hell, or just things about former hell itself)
she takes her job very seriously and supposedly does it very well
but there are a few things that get people: she has poor memory, other characters refer to her as "birdbrained" or "empty-headed, and there are a select few instances of dialogue from hisouten/gouyoku ibun that catch peoples attention. its one of those things where because other characters (and people) say shes stupid, it influences everyone else! in my opinion, i think her own actions straight from the source are much more indicative of who she is rather than the quick judgements of other characters.
=======================
the first major point before i get into the specific dialogue in the fighting games: "kanako needed an empty-headed hell raven, and utsuho fit the bill"
what exactly is meant by "empty-headed"? this is going to be more of an abstraction, so definitely take it with a grain of salt. we dont know much about utsuho before she gained her powers, just that she worked as a lowly hell raven that helped around the palace of the earth spirits/hell. to me, it sounds like an incredibly mind-numbing job that really doesnt require much thinking to begin with, so of course you wouldn't expect some kind of supergenius from it. im also going to go out on a limb and say that utsuho was a candidate for kanako's plan because she's also considered a pet. many unfortunately conclude that pets can't be intelligent, and even the title of "pet" carries the connotation of inferiority. even if she was truly empty-headed as previously suggested, this doesn't mean that she stayed as such with no change at all. when i first played th11, i would have never guessed that she would be "the stupid one".
small note: ZUN's comment on her theme ("even a fool that possesses great power can't cause too much harm")
the problem i have with this is that she really would have caused a lot of harm if the protagonists hadn't stopped her. you could say shes a fool for letting the power get to her head, but objectively i cant exactly point to anything in th11's dialogue/scenarios that suggests she's foolish unless you really want to count bad memory-retention as such. not gonna argue this too hard, but it seems like "fool" is a word thrown around very freely with little thought to how you can actually apply it to a situation.
=======================
IN HISOUTEN: sanae beats her up and afterwards says "youre trying to help me, actually" to which utsuho is like "Oh Ok". you could argue this is probably her dumbest moment, but would you really not follow or listen to the person who defeated you in battle? its not the most defensible point, but she didnt even seem completely oblivious either when she was asking sanae about the incident. my personal interpretation is that she has a bit of a short temper related to how important her job is. there are plenty of other 2hus who are generally sillier than this, it doesnt make much sense why utsuho is the only one who gets this treatment.
IN GOUYOKU IBUN: utsuho doesnt notice reimu before she starts blasting her to bits, which to be fair reimu wears all red in Hell (her fault honestly) + correct me if im wrong but is the power of nuclear fusion not extremely blinding? supporting this, in the events of GI its also implied that shes being overworked due to the oil incident, and we already established that she takes her job very seriously, so to me it makes sense that her first thought is to "remove the contaminant" and to use a lot of her energy in the process. a lot of people in general sometimes get wrapped up in their own work to the point of hyperfocusing, i say the bird can do it too
i also havent brought up the fact that we dont exactly know wtf eating a god does to your brain, whos to say it didnt fuck with you a little bit?
past all of this though i still think utsuho is funny as hell with her particularly bold and uncaring personality, its just that people seem to think that a couple of goofy moments make up her whole character and its just mildly annoying to me.. subterranean animism will probably be my favorite portrayal of utsuho because of how seriously they all treat her (mostly) but overall i wish more touhou fans would actually indulge in the source material and think a bit deeper about this neat little piece of fiction that i am WAY too passionate about (also its just way more fun to look at characters from a complex perspective)
