Jester traces the line of one pale, almost white, vein higher, where it goes to the curve of his shoulder before fading so she can’t see the path of it.

“Why are some of your veins like this?”

Eadwulf drops his head on the pillow, facing her.

“That’s what happens after a few decades of residuum implants.”

“Implants?”

Eadwulf’s nose wrinkles, “surely Bren told you that.”

“He might have mentioned it.”

Eadwulf pushes himself up into a sitting position to match her, and holds out his arm, palm up, to poke at the scars. He pushes at his skin like he’s feeling for something, and finally nods his chin when he finds what he’s looking for at one scar covered by his tattoo, “here. Feel here.”

Jester copies his movement, pushing more firmly than is conventionally accepted. At first, nothing, and then with a shift in her angle— there’s something hard. Small, just a little lump, but she can feel that lump, and almost the shape of it, under Eadwulf’s skin.

“That’s a crystal?”

“They’re bigger when we put them in,” Eadwulf explains, “over the years they get used up, until they’re gone, or you need a second round of implants.”

“I didn’t know you were walking around with all that in you! Doesn’t it hurt?”

Eadwulf shrugs, “when they get put in, yeah. And the first week or two you’re just— you’re fucked up. It’s one of the most dangerous parts of the Awakening. You’re overloaded with the arcane nature, it puts you out of your mind so you’re awake but dreaming, and it could stop your heart at any time with no warning. It’s the stage we lose most recruits at.”

i do think there is a degree to which certain kinds of Instagram activists have convinced themselves that traumatising themselves in solidarity is a useful form of activism. "I'm having nightmares and crying so much I want to be sick because of all these videos of dying children but I can't look away while people are getting hurt" I mean don't you think you'd be able to help more if you weren't having nightmares and crying all the time?? don't you think this is a one-way trip to burnout? don't you think maybe increasing the amount of trauma going around is counterproductive? I dunno bro there's something to be said for bearing witness but there comes a point where you gotta look hard at yourself and go "am I helping, or am I just making myself suffer so I don't feel guilty for not suffering while somebody else is experiencing bad shit"

There's some dude (derogatory) on FB who is PISSED people are pricing their farm fresh eggs at $2 and $3 a dozen instead of $4+, saying it's "disrespectful" and "undignified" and "I'm trying to feed my kids" like Sir, you are on a Facebook group page bitching about your neighbors egg prices because your pet chickens aren't earning you a living wage and you think it's your neighbors' fault, you do not have a leg to stand on here wrt dignity.

Also half the answers are like "I give them to friends and family free" or "I donate them to food banks" or "I'm making them affordable to folks who might not otherwise be able to get them now that they're so expensive in the store" and "if you think you're going to turn a profit keeping backyard chickens you have been wildly misled" and so on, and so forth, and I'm so living for it.

and I can tell you right now, he did NOT like my answer of "if you're trying to feed your kids, I hear eggs are edible."

to me, the funniest thing about “that’s rough buddy” isn’t the fact that sokka says something patently insane with zero context seemingly out of nowhere, or the fact that zuko clearly doesn’t know how to respond. it’s the completely incorrect use of the word “buddy.” zuko would obviously like to be friends with sokka, but sokka is not, in fact, his friend. this is the most time they’ve ever spent together, and it’s because zuko invited himself to tag along on sokka’s suicide mission. at this point in the episode, sokka still hates this guy, perhaps less than he did a week ago, but he still hates him enough that he didn’t bother forcing zuko to stay home, which means he still didn’t really care whether or not zuko lives or dies. which, considering that he had tried to kill zuko multiple times in the past, is not all that surprising. this entire episode is essentially just zuko forcing his friendship onto sokka while sokka is legitimately too depressed to care. so when zuko calls sokka “buddy,” there’s a spirit of dogged optimism characterizing that epithet, because in no possible realm would sokka consider zuko his buddy at this point in the episode. and that’s something we miss when noting the iconicness of this exchange, simply because, by the end of this episode, they are buddies, so in our minds looking back on these lines, the implication of friendship doesn’t feel out of place at all. and really, it isn’t out of place, but only because zuko’s tenacity and determination (in this instance, his determination to befriend sokka) has always hugely outweighed his ability to read the room.

No im not “grieving” Buddie, do you know how amazing it is to have queer/bisexual men representation in today’s media? Do you know how important it is for all of the community and the younger people watching this? This is a huge milestone and Buck’s sexuality is valid outside of any type of ship. Today we celebrate.
