“You’re supposed to slay the Princess” what if I color her in like a coloring page. Huh. What then
I did NOT feel like coloring Beast because the only picture I had of her was. Not good. Buuuuut I’m having fun so I may very well continue to color the Princesses

A few teeny notes:
My original plan for Witch and Thorn was to make Witch’s hair bright red and Thorn’s hair a bit browner, but I put in darker streaks for Witch’s hair and suddenly I had the idea to do something similar- but, of course, different- for Thorn. I really enjoy how that turned out, that and their dresses
Apotheosis is probably going to be the only instance where the Long Quiet isn’t black and white, because, yknow, radiant light and shit. I was aiming for a sort of water color-y vibe with her… not sure if I hit the mark but I like the result anyway!
I kind of knew I’d give Wild a bunch of warm, gentle pinks and browns, but I wanted to keep the exposed insides mostly untouched (although looking back, I could’ve also made the insides brown to match her arms). I think she turned out beautiful, my wonderful Princess with a disorder <3

Colors of Prisoner and Nightmare were based on posts from @17magpiesinatrenchcoat and @dmanix respectively! (sorry for the tag i just wanted to make sure)

thorn took the longest, razor took the shortest (which is funny bc theyre tied for my fave of these)
I specifically made razor still uncolored despite coloring the background just to add to her weird uncanny vibe

I absolutely LOVE Slay the Princess! It’s genuinely a game that I think is going to become a cult classic in the coming years. Definitely in my personal top 10 games of all time!
I absolutely adore how your choices actually matter in the game (unlike some games *cough* Tell Tales Walking Dead *cough*). I was also surprised about the outcomes of some of my choices (such as finding the Stranger first and getting an… interesting ending).
I’m so excited for the Pristine Cut of this game! I genuinely cannot wait to see what changes:
(And I think I read somewhere that the Den- which is my favorite route- may get more content :D)
I remember seeing this game when ManlyBadassHero played the demo, and it hooked me. So imagine my surprise when suddenly on my YouTube feed I see a video that says “Slay the Princess Full Game”. I avoided so many spoilers and saved until I could get the game and it was so worth it! Best $18 I’ve ever spent!
So as tribute to this game, here is a piece of fan art (and my first art post to Tumblr too)!

SLAY THE QUEEN THORN
I was inspired by Abby's sketch of a hypothetical Queen version of the Princess, so I tried my hand at it with a few vessels, including this one. I... ended up drawing something akin to a fashion design concept art rather than a practical design that won't be tiring to draw over and over after a handful of sprites later. I also had to use a bit more artistic license growing unnatural poppies on the dress and the thick twirly prickly noodles.
Tumblr media
some explanations behind the process
For the "mended" Thorn, I pretty much just removed the foreground thorns and added the dirt.
rambling/fangirling/screenshots below:
The Thorn is one of my favorites. If I had to choose only five vessels to offer to Shifty and there's no replayable feature, she'll definitely be one of them. I'm one of those suckers who's into Hurt/Comfort stories. Almost like a masochist for those fics, you could say. If the climax to an Action-heavy story is the defeat of one party, then the catharsis of Hurt/Comfort is when the two characters... well, comfort each other- either due to hurt from each other or someone else. In The Thorn's case, she started off rather innocently, Damsel-like, but not quite. She still had caution. It was until she was literally stabbed in the back that she learned that it was a mistake. And when Long Quiet offered sincere regret and admission of fault, she stabbed him... but she didn't feel the relief she thought she'd get from it. I think many relate to having been betrayed and/or betraying someone they trusted, and the scratches are felt by many players.
Tumblr media
The thorns curve inward, as if it's more painful to leave her than it is to approach her.
Tumblr media
Poppies grow around along the bramble. Many mistook them for roses because they're red and there are brambles (tbh, I actually dunno if they're brambles or briars, I looked them up and I got confused, forgive me, plant enthusiasts ;.;) that grow around the patches of those poppies. Death and romance~
Tumblr media
This brings back to Chapter 1 where Hero was kinda-sorta-maybe-definitely crushing on the Princess and wants to give her the benefit of the doubt, not only because of feelings, but for a reasonable cause of wanting to rescue someone who possibly may actually be a victim of circumstance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look, I have reasons why Thorn route is one of my favorites and it definitely doesn't have anything to do with both characters having massive trust issues and the capability to change themselves for better or worse and the emotional moments hitting me like a lovely diamond-dusted dagger. Both of them are rather cat-like with pointy ears too.
I appreciate that you're still given the options to leave or stab Thorn, as if the situation isn't pitiable enough. Even her tiara looks like a crown of thorns. It's as if she views the thorns as both a form of penance and a defence mechanism to protect herself from being hurt again, even though she's hurt by her own making this time.
Tumblr media
I chose for the Long Quiet to save her and leave the cabin together.
Tumblr media
This part stabbed me the most. Even when shown genuine help, she shrinks back.
Tumblr media
This part burns a bit of the jadedness away. Trust is a scary thing, so is love. How can you be so sure that you won't be hurt by the one you love again? But just like what The Prisoner says, it's about trust- blind trust. Thorn looks more human than her previous self- less animalistic, softer. A part of The Damsel returns, even in the music.
I recall weighing on whether I prefer the version with the Voice of the Cheated or Voice of the Smitten. I vaguely remember wondering if there was an option to ask her if it's okay to kiss her. I guess the ideal would be is to have that choice, but I suppose the climactic moment calls for it and she doesn't mind it, at least. It's like the option to hug Astarion from BG3, but you're not sure whether he'd be comfy with it after being hurt so much. He gave approval for it too~
As much as Thorn is one of my favorites, I'm not attracted to her and any of the vessels. Instead, I ship her with the Long Quiet- the character himself. I don't really see myself AS the Long Quiet, more like choosing what actions on what he does and I separate myself from him a lot for many reasons. It's a bit like the Harry situation from Disco Elysium in terms of seemingly blank-slate protagonists.
Instead, I kinda put myself into her situation to feel how she felt in this route. The poppies not only felt symbolic of her nature as part of the Shifting Mound, but also specifically the end of the mutual treachery you've inflicted on each other, potentially beginning anew on a path of healing.

I've seen a lot of people give names for the Voices, and as a Vessel enjoyer, I decided to give my names for them, too!
Damsel: Danielle
Prisoner: Priscilla (Pris for short)
Witch: Willow
Beast: Beatrice (Bea for short)
Tower: Diane (my thought process was basically "goddess, divine, Diana, Diane" for this one)
Adversary: Addison (Addy for short)
Nightmare: Natalie (Nat for short)
Spectre: Sienna
Razor: Zora
Stranger: Stace (gender-neutral name for a they/them princess!)
Burned Grey: Bernice
Drowned Grey: Drusilla
Thorn: Therese
Den: Demi
Apotheosis: Aphrodite (keeping with the goddess theme)
Eye of the Needle: Iris
Moment of Clarity: Clara
Wraith: Winifred (her whole vibe kinda speaks to her having an old-fashioned name, in my opinion)
Fury: Fiona (though I've also considered Alecto)
Wild: Wihelmina

Oh, for the stp questions, what do you think of the thorn? She is my favourite 🫶🫶
I think the Witch > Thorn route is probably my favourite, and most thematically coherent/meaty? Some Chapter 3 Princesses' are just their Chapter 2 version but More (like the Eye of the Needle, arguably the Den), but the Thorn really does stand out as a more fleshed out narrative, with more depth.
To get into the route, you have to either cheat the first choice (first going down without the Pristine Blade to lock the Princess into her more 'harmless' version before going back up grab the Blade and slay her), or take the first opportunity to stab her once her back is turned (yes, the Narrator is pushing you to do it, or you've locked yourself out of resisting because you already played the Damsel, but from her perspective, that doesn't make a difference). To build on what I said in my essay on the Pristine Blade, the simple fact that you have access to the Blade influences the dynamic between you and the Princess (corrupts it, really).
In either case, you really do betray her trust, and this hurts her considerably more than the arm torn/cut off, or whatever cuts you leave on her otherwise, because the violence she can immediately repay with her own. It's the hurt, the knowledge that she trusted you with her vulnerability and you took advantage of it, that she can't resolve, and this is, naturally, what the next chapter is about.
I'm not wholly sure why she's called the Witch, because she does surprisingly few things we might associate with witches.
Regardless, going in, you're joined by the Voice of the Opportunist, whose entire shtick is looking for ways to eke out short-term advantages without a care for any long-term concerns. In short, this fucker will defect in the prisoner dilemma after telling you he's going to cooperate, honest, and then be surprised you don't trust him in the second iteration, because he's on your side this time, he promises!
And this is how the Witch sees you, the Protagonist, because that's what these voices represent, and she sees her only defense against your backstabbing ways is to... be that exact same thing. To also keep her cards close to her chest, and jump at whatever first opportunity she gets to get one over on you (this is what she does if you turn your back on her in this route, even at the cost of her own life, the Scorpion and Frog/Farmer and Viper parallels are explicitly mentioned in the achievement). She's been hurt, and the only way she can avoid being hurt again, is to hurt you first.
The main difference between you and her, of course, is that you have the Blade, the power in this situation (yes, she did kill you last time, but that's hardly what matters here), and acknowledging this is the key to getting to the Thorn.
Because you have to give it up! You have to give the Blade to her, by way of apology, putting your trust in someone you know has no reason to like you and every reason to hurt you, and you have to put yourself at her mercy. Let her use that power against you like you did against her.
And the Witch doesn't understand why you do it! Why would you give up the upper hand when you have it? She wouldn't, after all. So she's suspicious, and she doesn't know what you're doing, but she remembers the hurt, and whatever game you're playing, she can now hurt you before you hurt her, so she takes the opportunity to kill you and immediately proves that hurting you doesn't stop her from being hurt either.
She asks you why you let her do that to her, because hurting you didn't resolve the dissonance between what she thought you were like and what you actually did. Hurting you doesn't suddenly bring your plan into clarity, and it leaves her incredibly confused.
But I think she asks herself another question, quietly, without quite being willing to acknowledge it to herself:
'Why would I do that?'
And this finally brings us to the Thorn (sorry for taking so long to actually get to her, anon, but I can't help myself). Some time has passed between the end of the Witch and now, and she had been plagued with those questions, with thinking of who she is, what she wants to be, and how to deal with the hurt while she tries really hard to figure out if she can actually trust you or not.
This is why the first question she asks you is if you're there to laugh at her. She thinks she might have seen your play (and she can be correct if you do decide to laugh at her! The achievement being called 'Past Life Gambit' is very fitting. You get a ton of opportunities to be cruel to her here and validate her distrust!), and when you say you're not, she's just... lost.
The thorns around are neat, because the degree to which this betrayal has hurt her also causes her to hurt herself. The thorns are pointed inward. You can get in, but you can't get out, and neither can she! This distrust within her is literally digging into her own skin, and even though she has the Blade, has the power in this situation, she cannot use it to resolve this situation for herself. She's going to need you, but if she gives you that power, how can she possibly know you're not just going to hurt her again? How does she know you're not going to make the same decision she did? How can she make the decision you did last time, when she doesn't understand why you did it?
And these fears are not unjustified! For all that the Opportunist is in favour of schmoozing up to the Thorn, the moment she gives up the Blade, he turns into the Witch again, immediately suggesting the very choice that resulted in the very misery the Thorn is now struggling with (because the Opportunist is kind of an asshole). Even though you both know you need each other to get out of this mess long-term, actually doing that when you've both stabbed each other in the back previously is not easy, and giving in to those short-term impulses is so very tempting. How do the Scorpion and the Frog not kill one another?
And this provokes big argument in your own mind, too, long enough the Thorn gets worried she fucked up by giving you the Blade in this anxious way that doesn't understand why you haven't made either decision yet.
Fortunately, the Opportunist is joined by the Smitten at this point (and I think this is a bit of a redemption for the Smitten compared to the Damsel route, but that's a matter for another post), and he argues very passionately (because whenever does he not) in favour of the beauty of trust and cooperation and love!
And so by sharing your power and using it with care (the Narrator even tries to make you slip, but the Smitten says no), you resolve the pain at the heart of the Thorn, and finally make it clear that you do deserve her trust as she deserves yours, and you get arguably the best ending of a single run.
Of the Third Chapter Princesses, I think the Thorn stands out in becoming more... human compared to her previous, rather than less. It adds a lot of depth to her narrative, and makes the resulting romance feel more real than the other options.
And of the potential Witch follow-ups, I think the Thorn is a more interesting resolution than the Wild, because the Wild is more about burying the resentment and pain and pretend none of it happened and you're united as one, whereas the Thorn sees you actually resolve your differences and develop a more healthy relationship in the wake of it.
And you teach the Opportunist the value of long-term thinking, which is neat.
Also, you get the only kiss in the game on this route, so that's also fun.
In short, yeah, fantastic route, interesting and nuanced Princess, wonderful resolution.

Controversial opinion but-
I don't really like the thorn princess that much
I understand WHY she's so loved, she's a chapter 3 vessel that has an enemies to lovers arc and you can kiss her if you have the smitten with you(much to the dismay of the Narrator, would gives you one of the funniest moments in the game)
But I just don't find her all that interesting when compared to all the other vessels, yet, she's so loved by the fandom that she ends up overshadowing the other routes(I believe she and the razor are the most popular versions of the SM)
I dunno why but I just think other chapter 3 princesses are more interesting than her, example, the burned grey.
The burned grey is the damsel's pure, borderline naive love turned into something much more. She's no longer naive and she knows that there's something keeping you from giving her a "happy ending". she's not mad at you, it's not your fault that you pludged that knife into her heart, the cabin-the very same place that you killed her-is to blame and she has to get rid of it, that's how she'll be happy, that's how she'll make you happy.
But I still like the thorn, she a little hurt kitty and she deserves to be happy <333
