And how it relates to the short story by J.G. Ballard (including the protestors who mirrored the story)

Zendaya at the Met Gala 2024, wearing custom Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano, and hat by Stephen Jones.
The fruit, flowers, insects and birds on the gown fit the dress code of the night, 'The Garden of Time', inspired by J.G. Ballard's 1962 short story (explained here by the BBC).

The gown also references John Galliano’s Spring 1999 couture collection for Dior, in particular the gown below, decorated with grapes.

Maison Margiela said:
'A sage lamé bias-cut ‘siren dress’ overlaid with iridescent electric blue organza with ‘retrograding’ in undulating bands of hand-painted metallic crin, swathed in an aluminium material and iridescent organza drape and bow, with a corsage hand-embroidered in a bacchanal of hand-painted impasto in the grammar of the electric blues and emerald greens of scarab amulets, with formations of birds, flowers, vines, grapes and nuts, worn over a boudoir-coloured duchess satin corset. A silver metal-wire ‘reverse swatching’ hat and a black hand-painted voile crafted in the memory of plume and enveloped in matching coloured stockings by Stephen Jones for Maison Margiela, and Eau de Nil velour and faux lizard Tabi interlaced ankle-strap pumps by Christian Louboutin for Maison Margiela.
Created for Zendaya by John Galliano for Maison Margiela, the haute couture silhouette was inspired by the 1930s mythological works of the photographer Madame Yevonde and imbued with the memory of the orgiastic sceneries of the bacchanals of Ancient Greece. In a dance between painterly cutting and draping techniques – unique to each layer of the construction – and the superposition of fabric textures such as tin foil with transparent iridescent organza overlay, the composition conjures the staccato brushstrokes of Giovanni Boldini. The bias-cut ‘siren dress’ is a key expression in the creative practice of John Galliano, which first appeared at Maison Margiela in the Spring-Summer 2020 Artisanal Collection. Infused with a certain ‘snobisme’, the look is given the epithet of ‘86 and Lexington’, a nod to the subway station near The Met.
The dress was crafted with ‘retrograding’, a technique through which variations of thread-work, appliqué or encrustation degrade from the bottom to the top of a garment like the linear base drawing of a painting that hasn’t yet been finished. The ‘reverse swatching’ technique employed in the hat exchanges the fabrics traditionally used for certain parts of dressmaking with materials of a contrasting value.' X

If you were wondering why the met gala sucked so much it’s because The Garden of Time is a story about the rich desperately clinging onto their obnoxious displays of wealth and opulence for which they continue to plunder dying resources. It ends with the working classes breaking over the garden walls to get their asses. The people at the met gala can’t meaningfully engage with the theme because it’s about them and how much they suck. They just wear ugly flower prints instead.

"the garden of time", met gala theme explained
Inspired by a short story written by J.G. Ballard in 1962, a story set in the XIX century about a count and countess who live in a large beautiful villa full of flowers, where everyday they can see an army or 'mob' approaching their villa from the safety of their balcony. Each evening as the army grows closer, the count plucks a flower from their garden made of crystals, which in turn, pushes the mob back. We discover that the crystal flowers reverse space and time. But they only have a few left in the garden. The outcome of the story becomes inevitable, hence why the story is often seen as a metaphor for evolution and the endless cycle of creation and destruction. One night they run out of flowers, and they're faced with the mob entering their villa. As the villa is being ambushed, we find out there's two stone figures resembling the count and countess, hidden by a large bush full of thorns and roses, that go untouched by water, fire, air, and people around, and seemingly remain there through space and time.
Also known as "sleeping beauties; reawakening fashion", 2024's met gala theme is not to be confused with disney princesses, or a garden tea party (thought I could see the majority of attendees being literal about it).
2024's met gala theme is about garments that have been used and preserved over time. Just like in the story, fashion historians have tried to fight back time, people, and natural elements to preserve the fabric of such pieces. I can see thierry mugler's 1982 and saint laurent's ss1999 collection being present.

We can expect to see iconic gowns from fashion history that are too fragile to be worn again. "Sleeping Beauties", garments that have remained untouched since they were last worn. Lots of vintage pieces, archive pulls, and sustainability all around.

While I expect to see pieces related to the natural elements, we can't ignore the darker side of the book. I can see some guests taking a darker route and alluring to the inevitable doom that is time. They could reference hollywood's obsession with beauty and how time takes it away from you. Or they could go as far as referencing the current state of the world and how human destruction is inevitable. I could see a lot of the newer Maison Margiela collections, or archive pulls from Alexander Mcqueen, as he tends to relate nature with more obscure themes.

Needless to say, I'm excited for tomorrow's gala. Could be one for the books.

my concept for this years met gala
Tumblr media
So, The Garden of Time is from a novel and in that novel it features a couple in a garden that turn to statues (I think). So I wanted to do a dress inspired by Greek statues with a gray speckled fabric, perhaps even one that is crystallized since the story also features crystal flowers, loads of draping. I included the creeping vines and flowers, made from fabric, to show the beauty of statues being overtaken by a garden with the passage of time. I went with some pre-Raphaelite hair and then also added in flowers to the hair, I would also Imagine some beautiful floral earrings, preferably in opal.
