Drama Review: Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938
Tumblr media
Source: Google Images
An unexpected case leads Lee Yeon back in time to 1938, where he reencounters Ryu Hong Joo. Once a guardian spirit of the mountain in the west, she's now the owner of a high-end restaurant in the capital city of Gyeongseong. He also meets his younger brother Lee Rang. Meanwhile, another former guardian spirit and ex-friend Cheon Moo Young has become hostile. Lee Yeon struggles to return to the present, to his loved one.

One of the Most Unserious Dramas Out There
Before we start: I did not watch the first one and am not planning to watch it at all. Going into Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 I admit I had to do a Q&A with my sister to understand what happened between the Lee brothers in this drama's modern world. However, one does not actually need to watch the previous drama to watch this and honestly speaking, from what I saw and knew about it, Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 is a whole lot more interesting and fun.
That being said, lets get on with how I felt about this drama. I am not kidding when I say, this is the most unserious drama for a drama anyone would think to be serious. Practically half of this drama was comedy and that is a praise. The comedy bit plays a part in making Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 so darn interesting and fun. Yet, this show also pulls on your heartstrings be it the brothers, the best friends or the best friends' righthand people.
I understand romance was a huge part of the first instalment but in this, it was just a tiny bit and I believe that is why I freaking loved watching this drama. In terms of what romance there was, I have no complains too. I mean, I adore the mermaid and the only complain I have is that I wished we could have gotten more scenes with her powers. When Rang said he liked someone who's stronger than him, he was not lying. The way Yeohee was written was right up my alley, she may not be as powerful as Rang but she saved him more times than he saved her and even when she was in danger, she still did not back down on a losing fight. For that reason, Yeohee is I really thought I would dislike the mermaid but nope, I love her.
Another thing I seriously love about Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 was the friendships. Any friendship in this drama was a pleasure to watch. Obviously, the friendship among our three mountain gods was my favourite. Don't get me wrong, Yeon is extremely lovable but in this trio, I need to worship my lady, Hongjoo and lovingly protect the cinnamon roll, Mooyoung. These three portrayed my kind of friendship where they were tight as children, still tight as adults and even with unfortunate circumstances, they might hate but they love each other more. Of course, the friendship among the roommates was a delight too. I only highlighted my top two favourites but I am not lying when I claim that this show did friendships so well.
Now, now. We have a problem though. At the beginning of this drama, Taluipa told Yeon even if he changes something in 1938, it does not affect 2023. I think its safe for me to say that we do not want that to be true, right? I am just willing to believe that what Taluipa said meant that Rang would still be dead in 2023, nothing Yeon did in 1938 changed Rang's decision in the future. I would even go as far to say that, everything Yeon did in 1938 further encouraged Rang to make that choice in the future. That is all I am willing to believe because I hear there's a third season and I need my best friends and roommates reunited to fight (without a doubt) the original mountain god. Yes, I know I said all I am willing to believe is that Rang is still dead but that's because I am sure there will be no Nine-Tailed dramas without both Lee brothers alive.
When the next instalment comes out, I will watch it as long as Hongjoo and Mooyoung are still around (if Jaeyoo, Miyeon and Yeohee are too, even better). I don't even care if there will be more romance although I wish there wouldn't be.
Rating: ★★★★★
P.S.: Anyone else felt that the big bad villains were so pathetic as compared to the smaller villains?

Fake Family (2015)
Tumblr media
Genre: Family, Drama
Plot:
36-year-old miss Eun-soo works at a dentist during the day and works part time in the evenings to take care of her family and debt. Her wish is to live for herself and away from her family for just a year. Now that the loans have almost been paid back, it's time for her to put her long-time plan into action. However, something unexpected happens and the time for her to be away from her family is postponed... (source: Hancinema)
Cast & Crew:
Lee Ha Na as Kim Eun Soo
Lee Hak Ju as Lee Min Soo
Supporting cast - Kil Hae Yeon, Kim Won Hae, Park Jong Hwan, Jo Dal Hwan
Director - Ahn Joon Yong
Screen Writers - Son Se Rin
Award: Best Actress in a One-Act/Special/Short Drama (Lee Ha Na)
Music: Some nice music choices throughout the drama special.
Overall:
This drama special was definitely a sponsored advertorial for Jeju Island and I’m 100% okay with that.
Tumblr media
It told the story of Kim Eun Soo, a mid 30s woman who had spent her life working hard to pay off her family’s debts, along the way growing resentful of them. She dreamed of doing something just for her, to spend a year doing whatever she liked on the beautiful Jeju island. But when the time finally came to escape things got in the way.
Tumblr media
This drama special was quite relatable, I think everyone has experienced plans not going their way and being frustrated with loved ones. Despite the female lead's feelings about her family the drama did have a nice message and ending.
Tumblr media
The cast were all really great and played their roles well. The drama itself wasn’t life changing but it managed to expunge a single tear out of me. Overall, a decent watch about what it means to be family.
Rating: 7.5 /10

MOVIE REVIEW | The Royal Tailor
This isn’t the first Korean period drama to depict a commoner with a particular set of skills gaining intimate access to the royal circle, only to become a pawn in a web of murderous court intrigue. But “The Royal Tailor” stands out with its attention to technical details, conveying beauty in an especially tactile way.
The first half to the story is light-hearted and plays fast and loose with history, devising sights gags to send up Joseon fashion crimes like shoulder pads, push-up bras and platform shoes, which are amusingly anachronistic. But the scenes also serve to paint commoner Kong-jin’s personality in vibrant strokes, such as his preference for the company of gisaeng, who model his provocative designs with sexual confidence, to his habit of hobnobbing with high-ranking snobs.
Meanwhile, Dol-suk is the hands-on artisan who excels at embroidery. He too is from humble origins but has managed through hard work to achieve the title of Royal Tailor, being in charge of making the clothes for the King and Queen, and some nobleman when their highnesses want to give them gifts. Dol-suk is also a few months away from becoming a nobleman himself, this is a very important point for what’s coming in the second half of the story.
Kong-jin, being able to work for commoners, is quickly recognized as the quintessential artist, experimenting with shapes and forms, and drawing inspiration from such mundance objects as a wine jar. His consciousness of style as an individualist statement is epitomized by his habit of burning his logo onto his costumes, the Joseon version of a fashion label.
And the rivalry between the two tailors is loaded with class implications; appalled by Kong-jin’s out-there designs, a nobleman proclaims, “A garment should reflect social status and rules,” echoing the law of the period that prescribes, legally, what each class can wear. While buttressing the hierarchical system, Dol-suk is ironically its victim, barred from donning any of the fancy clothes he makes.
A serie of events leads to Kong-jin entering the palace in order to repair his majesty’s clothes and he soon becomes enamored with the Queen, a breathtaking beauty rumored to be untouched by the king since their wedding night. Kong-jin’s intentions are pure: he wants the Queen to be happy, and she wants the King. So, he embarks in a Joseon make-over the turns more than one head and cuts some others because nothing it’s simple inside the Palace, and getting the attention of the King is of out most importance.
The complexity of the relationships between the four main characters, played effortlessly amazing by Han Suk Kyu, Go Soo, Park Shin hye and Yoo Yeon seok, is one of the many aspects of why this film is a must watch. The pretty clothes are breathtaking but the people wearing them do it in such a manner that’s impossible to take your eyes away. Each movement, color and embroidery has a meaning for the story.
I highly recommend it!

Queen In Hyun’s Man
Tumblr media
Genre: Fantasy, time travel, romance
Year: April 18 2012 to June 07 2012
Synopsis: Kim Boong Do is a scholar who had supported the reinstatement of Queen In Hyun when Jang heebin's schemes resulted in her being deposed and replaced as King Sukjong's queen consort. With the help of a spell when he is in going to be killed in a fight he travels 300 years into the future of modern Seoul and meets Choi Hee Jin, a no-name actress who is expecting a career renaissance through her role as Queen In Hyun in a TV drama. Review: I decided to watch this when i was being a sickly bed hermit this past weekend and actually.... it did not disappoint. An excellent twist between joseon and modern times with a mix of time travelling. This drama flowed smoothly and had very interesting plot twists. I felt that it was going to end by the middle of the series but of course you know something tragic is going to happen at that point.... which it did.
Tumblr media
The main characters were truely likeable and had in depth story lines... I kept thinking  Ji Hyun Woo (who plays Kim Boong Do) looks soooooo much like Himchan from BAP (or vice versus) in this drama... Anyway, both characters were played very well, and the amount of cheesiness between the lovers was just right...
Tumblr media
Now, the supporting characters I dont know what I can say about them....  Yoon Wol was probably the only supporting character than I actually liked. The other modern characters were kind of annoying and I just kind of let them play themselves out.  This is definitely an excellent watch and I was never bored.  Score: 8
