[Inspired by that one AITA subreddit story.] Kay's comments: AH! This story really is the epitome of one of my favourite tropes: oblivious Lan Wangji! It's so well-written and I love the misunderstandings so much and Lan Wangji's unintentional dickishness, because he doesn't realize that he's crushing hard on Wei Wuxian. He gets sooo jealous of Wen Ning, it's such a joy to read. Excerpt: The first thing he sees is, thankfully, Wei Wuxian. He’s lying on the couch, flat on his stomach and moaning while another man massages his back. Lan Wangji doesn’t breathe. “Mn, Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian stirs, head turning slightly in the direction of the door, his eyes remaining closed. “That you?” Lan Wangji doesn’t answer. The other man—the one who is seated on top of Wei Wuxian, straddling his hips—withers under Lan Wangji’s glare, but he doesn’t stop massaging. “Oh, sorry.” Wei Wuxian laughs breezily. “This is, ah—Wen Qionglin. Wen Ning, this is Lan Wangji.” Wen Qionglin ducks his head. “P-pleased to meet you.” Lan Wangji refuses to look at him. “What are you doing?” he grits out, teeth clenched. “Night hunt,” Wei Wuxian grunts. “Threw out my back. Ugh, yeah, Wen Ning, right there . . .” Wen Qionglin digs his thumbs deeply into Wei Wuxian’s lower back, while Wei Wuxian makes some more lewd noises. Lan Wangji has the sudden impulse to grab them and throw them both off the couch. Instead he stomps off to his room, tosses his duffle bag on the bed and starts to unpack. Aggressively. Is this why Wei Wuxian didn’t text Lan Wangji, because he was busy fooling around with Wen Qionglin?

i 100% agree about the loads of fantastic authors in this fandom. i wanted to mention 2: s6115 - i love how they get to the absolute heart of the characters and express their emotions, and they also balance it with humor very well H_Belle - i would call their writing…. snappy? idk if it's the right word but they keep the writing tight and moving and intriguing

For 10: anything by ScarlettStorm, her writing has a really solid voice! Also paired wings soaring by typefortydeductions (E, 33k, WangXian, Modern, slice of life, domestic bliss, angst, fluff, smut, hurt/Comfort, kissing, bdsm, artist WWX, poetry translator LWJ, slight somnophilia) has a very unique and wonderful narrative style.

I would recommend ScarlettStorm, who has great found families and depth of character and a particular breezy style I like. Also Ariaste, who has a similar style and excels at getting the most out of a premise. Also Sami, in particular the Paper Moon series because of her thoughtfulness about character development and how that drives the plot and the neat way she weaves the story together and has excellent narrative consistency. One more - hansbekhart is a tremendously skilled writer who, like orange_crushed (recced above), can just hit you with a brick of emotions. Highly recommend both authors as those who can drag deep, vast emotions out of you and leave you feeling as if you're a different person after you've read their fic. In particular, I suggest Roots Grow Riotous by hansbekhart.

for an example of fantastic writing, Twelve Moons and a Fortnight series by stiltonbasket on ao3 is EXCELLENT (intricate layered worldbuilding in vast timeline, awesome imagery and characterizations and build towards pivotal scenes). Also I personally love Cradle by dragonesque (one of best/fav show down diss scenes, politics) & The Murder of Crows by cerbykerby; to name a few

Maybe Wei Wuxian actually is feeling a little sour. Knowing Zhan’er can hear him, he twirls the blade, saying offhand, “Whatever—anything’s fine.” Shuoyue makes a choking sound. Even Xuan Su nearly falls off his stack of pillows. Wei Wuxian grins. “Just kidding. I name him—” But it’s too late. Before he can finish speaking, 'Suibian' is already etched across the blade. Oops. In a world where cultivators and furbies bond together in order to manifest spiritual weapons, Wei Wuxian is matched with Zhan'er, a stodgy, stuck-up Lan sect furby who hates him. Meanwhile, Lan Wangji is matched with the irreverent Xianxian, a rogue furby who came down from the Immortal Mountain to do heroic deeds and have a good time. Can the four of them figure out a way to work together without driving each other up the wall? And what happens when the Wen sect attacks?

hardcover or paperback (absolutely no question though some hardbacks are very beautiful) // bookstore or library (i love libraries in theory and love my college library but public libraries where i live are so dirty :( unfortunately) // bookmark or receipt (gonna be honest neither, i just assume i’ll figure it out rip) // stand alone or series (i’m all for a good series but rarely read them now except for TGCF MY LOVE) // nonfiction or fiction (100%, except nonfiction information books abt like animals n stuff are wonderful) // thriller or fantasy (neither i guess? i read mostly depressing classics so… but i think good fantasy has a hint of thriller in it and good thriller has a hint of fantasy—mixing genres >>) // under 300 pages or over 300 pages (it really depends on the author/story, some of the most beautiful things i’ve read are novellas but also sometimes you need an epic number of pages for an epic narrative) // friends to lovers or enemies to lovers (the friends should still sometimes act like enemies/make fun of each other though bc life needs spice in it) // read in bed or read on the couch (i see this and raise you—read anywhere and everywhere even walking down the street yes ik that’s a bad idea but i’ll do what i want thank you very much) // read at night or read in the morning (if i’m awake in the morning it’s bc i was forced to do something and so do not have time to read) // keep pristine or markup (though i do annotate a bit when i have time) // cracked spine or dog ear (NEITHER I BREAK IN MY SPINES AND WOULD NEVER DOG EAR WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE)
