Five times Joker died, one time he didn't (Arkhamverse)

Joker dies the same way in Arkham City, but each time Bruce's reaction is different. Joker remains in character but the story gets very romantic. And the stunning imagery.. don't get me started on it.

Gotham Disease (#48 verse)

Two amnesiac patients entered the hospital. They are briefly interviewed and they describe their strange dreams.

Other fics that are not mentioned are also strongly recommended!

Omegaverse batjokes. The way the writer brings Bruce's struggle and his identity as alpha together is brilliant. Non-con is from Joker's flashback, so keep that in mind.

Joker is very towards Batman and Bruce takes it. Harley and her gang, unfortunately, walks into their affair.

This is Harley POV. Joker is very narcissistic and has a disturbing moment with Harley but this is hilarious. If you liked or hated the show, read this. I still remember the members' reactions, haha.

Can you suggest a great place to start for a new Batman comics fan?

Hi! Ooooh this is a tough one. It kinda depends on what kind of Batman stories and which characters from the batfamily you like.

A great place to start is Batman: Year One by Frank Miller because it’s basically a modern retelling of the origin story.

I can also recommend some classic/pre-n52 Batman stories that you can read as standalones (in other words, they don’t require catching up with a year of comics before reading):

- Batman: Two-Face and Scarecrow Year One. Introduction to well-known villains. Basically, everything with “Year One” behind it is designed to be a starting point.

- The Long Halloween, by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. Very well-known and acclaimed. It has a sequel, Dark Victory.

- The Killing Joke, by Alan Moore. This one is a bit controversial in the fandom, some hail it as a classic, others don’t care for it much or downright hate it. In any case, it’s famous, maybe even famous enough for your library to have a copy.

- Hush, followed up by Hush Returns, and Heart of Hush. Hush isn’t a very well-known villain outside of the comics, but I feel like he’s brought up pretty often in the comics after his introduction, so it might be a good idea to read “Hush” just so you know who he is. "Hush” also has lots of appearances by other Batman characters, villains and heroes alike.

- Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. This is an AU story (which of course makes it a perfect standalone) but it’s a very famous one. Its success kinda started the “darker and grittier” trend that most movies follow.

There are many more but it has been a while since I’ve read them. No doubt some of my followers will be able to add to this.

If you’re interested in the Batfamily, here are some pre-n52 books for them:

- Robin Year One (Dick Grayson)

- Batgirl Year One (Barbara Gordon)

- A Death in the Family (the death of Jason Todd)

- “Robin” is a solo title for Tim Drake’s Robin, the collections are called Robin: Flying Solo, Robin: Teenage Wasteland, and Robin: The Big Leagues.

- Battle for the Cowl: this story takes place after Bruce Wayne/Batman has “died”, leaving Gotham in disarray. It introduces Dick Grayson as Batman with Damian Wayne as Robin.

- Tim Drake becomes Red Robin and has another solo title. Collections are: Red Robin: The Grail, Council of Spiders, Collision, Hit List, and Rabbithole.

- Gates of Gotham: a solid story that features Dick Grayson as Batman.

If you do want to read an actual run, I can recommend the Batman n52 run. The n52 was a reboot in 2011, which had a lot of issues as a whole because it erased fan favourite characters and storylines, so you’ll find a lot of people complaining about n52 online (usually for good reasons). However, the “Batman” title was actually pretty good. (Although I’ve only read the first 5 TPs, I couldn’t keep up with comics anymore when I started working full-time so if they became terrible after Zero Year, do let me know in the comments lol.) Here are the collections of that run: Batman: The Court of Owls (2012), Batman: The City of Owls (2013), Batman: Death of the Family (2013), Batman: Zero Year - Secret City (2014), Batman: Zero Year - Dark City (2014), Batman: Graveyard Shift (2015), Batman: Endgame (2015), Batman: Superheavy (2016), Batman: Bloom (2016), and Batman: Epilogue (2016).

(I personally wasn’t a big fan of what the n52 did with the other members of the batfamily, so I focussed mostly on Batman stories during this time. I heard the n52 “Detective Comics” run, which is Batman’s other title, was decent as well but I wasn’t keeping up with that one so I can’t be sure.)

I can’t recommend anything more recent (after 2016) because I actually wasn’t able to keep up with comics anymore. (I know the n52 ended, but idk anything about what followed it.) But I’m sure some of my followers will be able to give even more recommendations!

In the end, this is very personal. When it comes to comics, there’s just so much out there, you can’t possibly read it all and there really isn’t such a thing as “required reading”. There will be writers whose interpretation of the characters you like, and ones you hate. ^^; You’ll have to discover what your taste is, and have fun along the way. :)

8. Pre-N52 or N52?

n52 because pre-n52 art makes my skin crawl. pre-n52 comics colors (ESPECIALLY the 2000s) taste like dust and the fear of being trapped in an alternate-dimension version your grandmother's old house where no one will hear you scream. also because if the ramifications of n52 storylines were explored properly you would have literally the most spectacular most engaging stories ever, like. there is soooooo much potential there for angst and introspection and action! i mean forever evil and the fallout alone are the perfect base for any amount of dick grayson angst (malihah ygm ☆) so I favour it for the potential it has alone. but also n52 starfire and n52 cass+steph and n52 diana...darlings of my heart im so so sorry

13. DCEU or DCAU?

dcau dcau dcau. while i have my gripes with the dcau (namely animation style and coloring) not only does the DCAU have hal jordan ☆ and damian wayne ♡, it also has dickkory ✨🎯💘💖 as well as wonder woman: bloodlines💥💖🥵🥰🥂, which is an animated version of the live-action wonder woman however is several thousand billion times better than ww 2017, in that it doesn't have known IDF supporter g*l g*dot playing my favourite superhero, and that it actually made me cry real tears because the storyline was actually that moving.

24. If you had total control what would you change?

#1. cut out tim drake. I would just get rid of him. rewrite dc canon to make steph the third robin. I just think thematically it's a better choice ok

#3. get rid of the current DCEU trinity. batfleck can stay if they end up doing batman beyond but can we PLEASE get a younger batman also I hate g*l g*dot why was she hired she can't even act. henry cavill superman is too built to be superman bring back christopher reeve-style superman. hot in a soft way . fyi its v v important that the new hypothetical bruce wayne actor should have CHEEKBONES. yeah

#4. get rid of young justice season 3. it's gone. buh-bye.

#5. fix all the awful dragon-lady caricatures in comics. talia shiva jade etc they are so much more than stupid outdated horrific stereotypes ! we deserve to see them as characters with actual drives and motives and not just background villains

Can you recommend me some comics where Bruce is a good dad to the Robins specifically. Reading fanfics and seeing I suppose really bad takes on the character led me to think that Bruce is like this super abusive dad, since fandom and some fanfics I’ve read generally like to paint him as that.

Yea of course!!! Bruce is my favorite character so I’m more than happy to give out some recommendations.

This might be a little hard to follow since I’ll be talking in a lot of abstracts so bare with me.

The best place to find really good Batfam content is in the 90s/00s era of the Batman comics. The 80s as well if you wanna go back that far. Bruce has always been written as a good dad in the earlier comics, but this era is the easiest to pick up in my opinion.

If you’re willing to spend a little cash, the easiest way to sift through this era and find something to read is to get the DC Infinite app. It had everything that DC had ever published in a super organized catalog and it’s how I was able to read so much.

Now for more specific storylines.

Batman: Gotham Knights (2000)

I love this run so much!!! It’s so good just SO GOOD!!!! It’s an anthology series so it’s a lot of one off stories, but it’s all about the Batfamily and it’s some of the best writing for Bruce I’ve read!!! It had a big focus on Batman and Nightwing’s relationship, but his relationship with Robin, Batgirl, and Oracle also get their time to shine.

Batman: Legacy

It’s a Batman, Robin, and Nightwing team up book and their dynamic is just super fun to see their banter and how they all play off each other. I haven’t read it in a while but the three of them really feel like a family and it’s cute!!!

Batman: Bruce Wayne Murder?/Fugitive

So even though Bruce isn’t exactly acting like himself in this story and for a lot of the early parts of it he’s actually acting like a huge dick, but this story is super Batfam focused and it really shows you how good Bruce is. This is one of my favorite Batman stories and it shows you all sides of Bruce; the good, the bad, and the ugly. I think if you don’t understand Bruce super well this is a great story to read. You’ll also see how much the Batfam cares about him and what they think of him.

Batman: Face to Face

It’s a Batman and Robin story mainly focused on Tim and Bruce’s relationship and it’s *muah* so good!!! It’s very murder mystery and it’s the story where Tim gets officially adopted by Bruce. I would also say look into the Robin comics specifically when Tim gets his red and black costume because those comics put a lot of focus on Bruce and Tim’s relationship and Bruce is written as great dad in them!!!

52 Batman and Robin

This series is all about Bruce and Damian’s relationship and them trying to come to understand each other and it’s so good!!!! I typically hate the n52 but this series feels connected to the old timeline in the way other books didn’t. The art is super good and Damian is baby!!!

Rebirth Detective Comics

Another pretty decent thing to come out of the Reboots and the heart of the story is Bruce and Tim’s father/son relationship and Bruce dealing with the grief of Tim’s death.

hi mar'i! is it okay if i ask you if you can rate every dickkory adaptations/incarnations throughout the years (NTT, Teen Titans Cartoon show, Teen Titans Go, DCAMU, Convergence, New Order, Kingdom Come, Injustice 2, Live Action) personally live action is my least favorite of all of them, and it has nothing to do with Anna or Brenton, it's the titans writers. They don't care about their relationship at all and i hate that they portrayed them as nothing but friends with benefits,it bothers me

#9 DCUTitans

I’m in complete agreement with you. My least favorite version of them is the live-action show. It has absolutely nothing to do with the actors bc I love them both, but the writing is just not there. My favorite thing about DickKory is how they communicate with each other. They talk about their problems and find solutions to them together. DCUTitans on the other hand has them barely speak to each other. I don’t necessarily mind that they started the relationship with a physical connection considering the comics did something similar (with a kiss instead), but then they just did absolutely nothing with it. Then again this show, in general, does nothing with its characters...Maybe it’ll get better, but I doubt it.

#8 Teen Titans Go

I get that this show is first and foremost a comedy, but I’m not really into the unrequited love thing. I find it hilarious since because of the batoffice, Kory is usually left pining over Dick in the comics but here it’s the other way around, but that doesn’t make it rank any higher on the list. It’s cute, mindless fun, but it’s not really DickKory

#7 Injustice 2

Look, I’ll admit it, I’m an angst girl. I absolutely adore it when entertainment breaks me down to tears and sobs, but other than some voicelines and sad endings, DickKory barely exists here. Dick is dead the whole time and honestly this universe just saddens me for Kory. I’m only ranking it this high because whatever crumbs are there are accurate crumbs.

#6 Nightwing: The New Order

We are getting to the part of the list where I actually don’t have many complaints anymore. I enjoyed Nightwing New Order. Jake Grayson is a little underdeveloped, but it’s the only elseworld (other than Convergence) where DickKory actually end up together and happy in the end. I know liking this little book is a controversial opinion apparently, but I thought Dick had a great arc, and Kory was herself through and through. I guess my one complaint would be that I think Kory would have taken Jake with her, rather than leave without him, but it’s a dystopian elseworld so I don’t think it matters that much.

#5 Kingdom Come

I swear if Kory was alive in this universe this one could very well be my favorite. Kingdom Come is what DC should have become instead of all the N52 and Rebirth nonsense. Having characters progress and actually go through life-changing moments is important to and satisfying for readers. Mar’i Grayson is an incredible character who deserves to be in the main canon. She should be co-leading a Teen Titans team right now with Damian, Jon, Lian, and the other members of that generation of superheroes. Not to mention, that Kingdom Come also has my all-time favorite suit design for Koriand’r herself. If only Kory was still alive in this universe... 😢

#4 Teen Titans (2003)

As the first ship I ever had, Teen Titans’ RobStar will always have a special place in my heart. I love TTA! It’s a wonderful version of DickKory and of the Teen Titans, that captures the heart of the original comics while changing it just enough for a different, younger audience. This show even gave us some of the most iconic DickKory comic scenes.

#3 DCAMU

In this house, Apokolips War doesn’t exist. Instead, DickKory got married, had Mar’i and Jake, and lived a long, happy life of fighting crime, saving the world, and being domestic while doing it. Not only is this the best DickKory adaptation outside of comics, it’s also the best Kory adaptation outside of comics.

#2 Convergence: New Teen Titans

It doesn’t get better than Convergence: New Teen Titans. Frankly, I’m tempted to rank it in first place. A universe where they actually get married, no strings attached? No major character death? The perfect Titans team (except for the exclusion of Raven)? Yeah this is the universe I want to read more of.

#1 New Teen Titans (1980)

And of course, I’m sure no one saw it coming, but my all-time favorite version of Dick Grayson and Koriand’r is and always will be the classic: New Teen Titans (1980). It’s perfect in almost every way. They communicate, they learn from each other, they grow to become better people. Had the wedding gone through like it was originally planned? I would not change a single thing about them. Sometimes, you just can’t recreate perfection.

Okay we got two questions in this vein, so each of the admins replied one with our own thoughts. Okay, i’m not good at putting my thoughts into words so you’re gonna have to bear with me here lol

If anyone wants to share their own thoughts on this, feel free to reply or send us an ask, we’re interested in you know sparking some convo and all that.

Okay i’ve talked about my main issue for Titans!Robin Jason here on my own blog, tl;dr i think they took elements from Jasons robin run without the context it came with? Titans Jason comes across as angry and aggresive “just because”. actually there isnt a tl;dr just read the post SORRY

Jason was 11-15 years old when he was robin, which i know it seems like something very minor, aging up isn’t a bad storytelling tool, done right it’s fine etc etc, but in Jason’s case i feel like it actually took away from his story? Like, by aging him up they made his character more “mature”, with elements that simply weren’t found in jasons original robin run when he was just a child. Titans Jason feels more like they’re trying to portray n52 red hood jason rather than robin jason, which.. isn’t a good thing! Because again context matters! Red hood jason is a certain way because certain things happened to him, and by trying to copy and paste that personality into robin jason without those reasons it loses any kind of nuance it could’ve had. And im pointedly saying n52 jason which we all know is real jason’s tethered, so they’re giving us knock-off n52 jason when n52 jason was already on the sale display

Honestly titans robin jason is just new 52 red hood jason without anything of what actually made him red hood. and the fact that they’ve already hinted red hood jason WITHOUT ANYTHING! ANYTHING that made him become red hood pisses me off a little, ngl.

(like he literally became red hood as a fuck you to bruce, and in the show neither the joker nor bruce are important characters??? AND THEY SHOULDN’T??? BECAUSE ITS A TITANS SHOW???)

which brings me to!

while jason was a titan, he wasn’t a MAIN titan, and he should’ve NEVER gotten this much focus. He’s a batman character, his entire story depends ENTIRELY on batman, BRUCE being present. and when you take that away it may as well be an oc. Jason and Dick weren’t even that close in Jason’s robin comics, it just doesnt make senseeeeeee, if anything he was closer to Donna! and if you watched the show you probably saw how Donna hated Jason’s guts! And anyways back on track, why is red hood going to be the villain for a TITANS show when he’s only ONCE, EVER had a villain appearance for them??? And it was during Tim’s era?? And imagine if Tim does appear, why would Jason be mad a thim when HE decided to go away? DOESN’T! MAKE! SENSE! Why are they going out of their way to include Jason somewhere he shouldn’t be more than a guest appearance on? He should be Dick’s annoying yet endearing little brother and that’s it...

And honestly genuinely i despise how they portrayed Bruce as not caring about Jason at all... again, Jason’s relationship with Bruce is the heart of a lot of his storylines.. centering Jason’s story around the titans rather than Bruce.. yeah you may as well have created an oc.

Honestly if i watched season 2 again i could be more specific on stuff titans did that it was like just. seeing some dude named jason, but it’s so bad.. just so bad.

Anyways. If i took away the robin costume i would’ve NEVER guessed thats supposed to be Jason tbh. Like, honestly, do you see these panels and think “Oh yeah it’s like looking at titans Jason”

Honestly to summarize it, our friend @redarrow sent this to our groupchat a few days ago and i think it’s pretty relevant to the conversation:

Titans, along with almost every story that contains Jason is once again reiterating the narrative that Jason was a bad robin and that he was inherently bad. “His trauma didn’t make him red hood, he was always destined to become a villain/anti hero.”

At the end of the day, these grown adults decided that it would be okay to violently kill off a child in a comic that children read. A character that was specifically made to target a younger audience. Instead of dealing with the consequences of their actions, they try to justify it by retroactively making Jason evil. What really makes me mad is that robin was created for children, and the moment they make a child character have a realistic background to an extent, they basically say there’s no hope for you.

How I feel about this character: She is my everything. I love nobody as much as I love her. I am at all times thinking about Bette Kane

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Dawn, Hank, Charley, Barbara, Helena, Artemis, Donna & I think she & Luke Fox dated for a little bit in high school before deciding to be just friends

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Gar!!! Her & Gar are best friends & they shouldn’t be romantic

My unpopular opinion about this character: Don’t know if she’s known enough to have any unpopular opinions, but bitchy Bette Kane should be brought back. They defanged her a lot & I don’t like it, let her be the worst it was really funny

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I really wish that in the N52 Batwoman series, the Kate&Bette dynamic was changed so while Kate had all her military training & was older, Bette had more vigilante experience & they had to learn to work together & learn from each other

my OTP: Hank/Dawn/Bette has a special place in my heart, I’m an eternal sucker for ArtyBette, but when it comes down to it... Bettenelli is simply superior

How I feel about this character: I’ve only recently gotten into Iron Fist comics but listen. LISTEN. He’s the love of my life, okay? Got it? I would die for this dumbass idiot disaster man

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Luke, Luke&Jess, Misty, Brenda because I thought they were just funny, Matt, I read a surprisingly good Peter fic so hm. Something there

Rogues Lore

First of all I want to thank @schweeeppess for letting me spam her with Rogues lore 2 months ago cuz it made this post so much easier to type out when I can just copy-paste everything and then edit it to be more cohesive lmao

Second this is under a read more because it is A Lot

Leonard Snart AKA Captain Cold

He grew up with a super abusive father and his only refuge was when he would hang out with his grandfather in his grandfather's ice truck. When the grandfather died, he grew tired of his dad's abuse and set out to start a criminal career and moved to central.

(He's the one who started the rogues!)

He found blueprints for a "cold gun" which he ended up making from scratch (it’s also canon that he knows the gun so well he can remake it out of scraps in about 30 seconds to a minute) and had three main rules in his group: No Killing, No Harm To Women Or Children and No Drug Use. His cold gun is capable of interfering with the speedforce cuz it can reach “absolute zero” which is even colder then Mr Freeze's tech.

He's also the only cold-based villain capable of mastering this temp. In New Earth he was described as an "adversary" but in Prime Earth (same backstory as before mind you) he's described as being a straight villain whose only rule in the group is "no killing" (which seems to be a pretty flexible rule these days cuz DC has made him more, well, down with killing). He's also much younger here then he was in NE.

In Flash 2016 #17 we see another upgraded version of his gun that's capable of separating the Flash from the speedforce directly and, in doing so, causing Barry excrutiating pain. Generally, he and Barry had more respect for eachother in NE, to the point that Len even considered him family. In PE, though they have teamed up now and again, Len is far more hostile towards Barry, sometimes even being written in a way that suggests he wouldn’t mind if Barry died.

Sam scudder AKA Mirror Master (the first one!)

He was a simple convict who just really wanted to learn how to get inside a mirror's reflection. He practiced in a hall of mirrors and, once he succeeded, became Mirror Master. He was a frequent foe for Barry and, during Crisis on Infinite Earths, died around the same time Barry did.

He was the one who discovered the "mirror world". At one point he got himself trapped there and hated that the mirror world could just get him whatever he wanted instead of him stealing it so he got Barry to bust him out. He could also use mirror's to mind control ppl (dont ask) and this intrigued Barry.

On PE he's dating Lisa Snart (Len's younger sister) and is the only Mirror Master to exist. In N52 he, Len, Lisa, Mick and Marco all got fused with their weapons for a while and given meta-human abilities which I. hate because it took away what made them all so cool (I'm fine with Marco tho and you'll find out why in a minute) he's also a really big attention seeker lol

Hartley Rathaway AKA Pied Piper

Alright most of Hartley's info is from NE so: he was born deaf to wealthy parents who got him very high-tech hearing implants. He became obssessed with sounds and started experimenting with sonic technology. Bored of his rich life (and sometimes it's implied he had ableist and/or homophobic parents too) he took to a life of crime after learning how to hypnotize people through music (Pied Piper ayyy).

He was the first person to ever successfully break out of Iron Heights and did so because he befriended the rats there and used them to help himself escape, adding more to his whole Pied Piper thing. After Barry died he gave up crime and started working to help the poor and underprivelaged (I'm not saying he quit specifically bc of Barry's death buuuuuut most of the Rogues did so).

He struck up a close friendship with Wally and came out as openly gay! On PE all that we know for certain is that he's a "reformed vigilante" who's the conductor for the Central City orchestra. He used to share an apartment with Barry (yes for real) before he moved in with his bf, David Singh (also Barry's director in the CCPD). Lisa was the one who convinced him to come out to the Rogues, and they were all chill with being gay, their problem came when he started dating David who is, you know, a cop.

He has a pet rat called Moon (cute, right?). Also in pre-N52 canon (cant remember if it was NE specifically or older) Hartley once had a nervous breakdown after Barry arrested him so Barry took him to get help at a mental health hospital :')

(Some artists draw him blonde, some brunette and others go more for reddish-brown it’s kinda confusing)

Marco/Mark Mardon AKA Weather Wizard

On NE he's a two bit criminal called Mark Mardon (he's also white and yes thats important to note) but one day, after escaping from a cop van, he ran to find his brother, Clyde, who was a scientist only to discover his bro had died of a heart attack (however, there's implications that he actually murdered his brother and simply blocked out the memory).

He then found Clyde's notes on how to create a wand to control the weather and made it for himself. The worst he ever did on NE was imprison a town in winter and after Barry's death he went into semi-retirement (told you the Rogues all did this)

On PE however! He and Clyde are Latino and are the heirs to a huge cartel! Clyde takes over the cartel and Marco wants nothing to do with that life. After their father dies, Marco runs away and eventually becomes Weather Wizard.

He comes back when he hears his brother has been murdered and gets accused of the crime. He finds out it was Clyde's wife, Elsa, who orchestrated the whole thing and, in a fit of grief and anger, kills her with lightning. He also tries to kill himself at the same time but it doesn’t work. After her death, he curls up into a ball and starts crying because he feels like he hasnt got any family left but then Lisa shows up and is like "yo the rogues are still here for you bitch"

His emotions affect the weather in this continuity and I’m a weak bitch for that but that’s 100% my bias for Ororo Munroe showing itself lol

James Jesse AKA Trickster (the first one!)

James Jesse was born to the Flying Jesses, famous circus performers. He, however, was afraid of heights, and preferred reading stories of Western criminal Jesse James.

He invented air-walking shoes to get rid of his acrophobia, and this led to his fame as an aerialist at the circus. Buuut he wanted more excitement in life and became a conman instead! He had a lot of wacky gadgets like exploding teddy bears and, after Barry's death, moved from Central to Hollywood and started working in special effects.

Like Hartley, he even attended Barry's funeral. He once beat the devil, Neron, at his own game and eventually started using his skills for good, collecting weapons of incarcerated villains so they couldnt fall into the wrong hands. He eventually died protecting Hartley during Final Crisis. Deadshot was the one who got him.

On Prime Earth his parents were straight up neglectful and, instead of creating his own boots, he stole them from STAR labs instead. This version of him is also WAY more fucked up and murdery then NE to the point us long-term Rogues fans got really upset at how much DC had changed him

On NE his real name is “Giovanni Giuseppe” (swear this is, like, the only italian name DC knows) and on PE the Flying Jesse's were a deliberate rip off of the Flying Graysons

George “Digger” Harkness AKA Captain Boomerang

The illegitimate son of an American toy-maker, W.W. Wiggins, and an Australian woman, Betty Harkness, George Harkness was raised in poverty in the small town of Kurrumburra, Australia. His stepfather, Ian Harkness, hated the boy and made his life miserable. (Like canonically Ian was an abusive alcoholic and even abused Betty who was too ill to defend herself or George. The reason George goes by "Digger" is cuz that's what his mom used to call him before she died; it's aussie slang for "soldier")

In school, Harkness crafted a boomerang. He discovered he had great skill with the aboriginal weapon and often used it for mischief with his best friend, Mick Wentworth. He further honed his skills while spending some time hiding from the law in the Australian bush.

When Digger was eighteen, he and Wentworth robbed a general store and were able to make their escape with the aid of Digger’s boomerang. However, this incident caused Digger’s stepfather to kick him out of the house.

His mother gave him a plane ticket to Central City and told him to get in touch with Wiggins. Wiggins had been searching for a spokesman for W.W. Wiggins Game Company's latest product, a toy boomerang. Under the alias "George Green", Digger auditioned for and got the job. Wiggins outfitted him with a costume and gave him the name "Captain Boomerang."

Ridiculed by the audience, he took to a life of crime instead.

His story is pretty much the same on PE. The only diff being there was no childhood friend and Digger made boomerangs in an attempt to impress his absentee father. Also he has a habit of making up fake stories about himself lmao

The only one's he really doesnt stab in the back are the Rogues and Harley Quinn but everyone else? fair game. In Flash: Rebirth he and Barry even exchange favours for info and it’s implied this is a regular thing for them

Roscoe Dillon AKA The Top

He technically appears on PE but he's one of Thawne's acolytes so lets just. Skip that and focus on NE instead

Literally his whole thing is that he was obssessed with spinning tops as a kid and taught himself how to spin fast enough to deflect bullets. He became a criminal, tried to blackmail the entire world once, and was Lisa's first boyfriend!

He was also her ice-skating coach and taught her how to spin super well like himself! He has a very confusing characterization tho cuz sometimes he was written to be all about revenge and killing but other times he was just like the other rogues; a blue-collar criminal who stole things because he liked to.

He died eventually which I'm not going to try to explain cuz it's...yeah. There's also this whole thing where he could possess people after his death but this was in the silver age and that shit just happened sometimes so whatever

In short: Roscoe has a really cool concept to him but nobody really knew how to write him so he ended up all over the place

He also has a Spinning Top shaped satellite in space where he stores all his loot (dont ask)

Mick Rory AKA Heatwave

Mick Rory has pyromania! Very severely! He was born on a farm outside of Central and, as a child, was very fascinated with fire. This turned into an obssession and he ended up burning his house down. So fascinated by the flames, however, he never ran to get help, watching his whole house burn down (and killing his parents inside) and he ended up living with his uncle after this.

On a schooltrip, his schoolmate stuck him in a meat locker as a prank where he gained Cryophobia (fear of the cold) so in retaliation Mick locked the boy in his house and set the thing on fire (again, pyromania). He ran away again and ended up becoming a fire-eater for a circus. That didn't last long either because, surprise!, he burned the place down.

Desperate to find a way to help his obssession, he happened to see the Rogues operating in Central and decided to take up villainy. At first he and Len got into a few altercations with eachother due to Mick's fear of the cold but eventually they settled their differences and Len officially brought him into the Rogues.

Mick kinda relies on them to keep his pyromania in check basically. There was a time where he was, briefly, reformed and gained a close friendship with Barry (even being roommates with him. By then he'd already known Barry's real identity for a few years) and used his pyro knowledge to become a fire-fighter consultant. At one point he even worked for the FBI

His backstory is practically the same on PE the only difference being that he never expressed regret for burning down his house, and actually says he wishes he’d burned down the whole neighbourhood instead

Lisa Snart AKA Golden Glider

When I say her NE version is leagues above PE I mean it.

Like Len, she suffered abuse under their father and escaped it by becoming a figure skater under the name Lisa Star for the Futura Ice Show! Her fame came from her very fast spins, a trick she was taught by Roscoe. When Roscoe died while fighting Barry (brain complications though there’s more to it, but again I’m not going to get into that) Lisa turned to villainy, blaming Barry for her lover's death.

Her attempts on Barry and Iris' lives were always foiled. She used a pair of ice skates that created their own ice flow, and had many gadgets that caused hypnotism. She also stole Len's gun once but retooled it into a twirling Baton.

When Barry died she renounced her feud with him and attempted to go straight again with her brother. They created a company that recovered lost or stolen items. Eventually she returned back to a life of crime, went through three boyfriends, all using the name Chillblaine (she named them that iirc), until the fourth Blaine killed her. Len got revenge on that one

On PE, however, Lisa had a brain tumor (it got cured later) and was a tag-a-long villain for her brother and her boyfriend, Sam Scudder. This version of her never became a skater and is instead murderous just for...the sake of it. She also has this thing about wanting to be the leader of the Rogues instead of Len, and when she's in charge of them for a while the Rogues’ morals change and killing is suddenly fine so. Whatever. NE Lisa is the best (also her whole outfit? Stunning)

Roy G. Bivolo AKA Rainbow Raider (not technically a Rogue anymore but he was a member for a while)

He appeard on PE as Chroma but gets murdered by Grodd so we only have NE canon to use (they did my mans dirty)

He was a wonderful painter from an early age but was born colourblind. His father, an optometrist, was determined to create a device that would let him see in full colour. Toy didnt get the device until after his father's death but unfortunately the device didnt let him see colour.

Instead, the goggles could project beams of light that could become solid objects, make him invisible, blind his opponents, or affect the emotions of his targets. Angry that he couldnt pursue an artistic career. he decided to become a thief and primarily stole famous artwork. He was eventually killed by Amunet Black

Evan McCulloch AKA Mirror Master (second one)

Evan was born to rich parents Louis and Carol Erikson who gave him up for adoption because they were too young to be responsible parents. He ended up at the McCulloch orphanage.

At age 8 he was molested by one of the older boys there and, in self-defence, ended up drowning the him. At 16 he left the orphanage, taking on the name of the woman who raised him and moves to Glasgow (he’s scottish btw)

He found that it was super difficult to hold down a job but, needing to make ends meet and constantly breaking the law anyway, he turned to a life of crime and became a hitman and then a professional assassin.

One day he got hired to kill his birth father but was unaware of who his target was until after he took the shot. Grief-stricken, he attended the funeral and tried to work up the nerve to approach his birth mother. By the time he had, she'd committed suicide and he turned himself in for his crimes.

Either the Scottish or US government gave him Sam's old Mirror Master gear and hired him to be a mercenary.

His first job was scaring Animal Man into stopping his activism, but he failed because of Animal Man’s wife. Refusing to actually kill the wife and children (thanks to his own morals) he gets fired and helps Animal Man seek revenge.

He continues to work as a criminal and supervillain-for-hire, even working out of costume as a mercernary in Britain.

Eventually he found his way to Central City and joined the Rogues, taking over as Sam Scudders official successor. There was a time where he had a Cocaine Addiction which caused friction between him and Capt Cold because of Len’s rule against drug use.

Throughout all of this, Evan made sure to donate a portion of all the money he ever got to the McCulloch Orphanage

Axel Walker AKA Trickster (second one)

On PE, Axel was recruited by the Rogues early on in his career. He messed up during a heist and they kicked him out (they'd never do that but w/e)

He worked for Mob Rule as a henchman for a bit then went freelance when MB was arrested. He saved Cold's life cuz he felt he still owed Cold a debt. When Grodd took over Central, Axel tried to join his side but Grodd tore his arm off from the bicep (ouch) and left him to die on the street. Axel got himself a cool sleek robot arm and returned to crime anyway. He got accused of murder, Barry cleared his name, but he still got sent to Iron Heights for other charges.

The Rogues, hearing about this, went to bust him out and were like "okay fine u can hang with us" and he stayed with them from then on

In NE canon, while Jesse was working with the FBI, Axel stole all his gear and ended up working for Penguin in Gotham. Penguin gets attacked by Tarantula, Axel fails to stop her and a few days later he gets caught by Robin (Tim) for causing trouble in Gotham.

He moves on to work with Amunet Black, but after her defeat is offered to join the “new Rogues” by Capt Cold and accepts the offer. Some stuff happens, he fights the OG Trickster who leaves him in a dumpster and tells him never to pick up the gear again, then Axel answers an ad from some college students asking for a trained hero to teach them some things, he has dinner with them and then kills them all. Neat.

When Jesse died, Axel redonned the Trickster gear and started operating his own crew out of an old Rogues hideout. When the Rogues returned to Central, Axel found out they were gonna retire and go underground. He rejoined them to help them get revenge on Inertia for manipulating them into killing Bart Allen, and he stayed with the group henceforth.

Evan explained to him that joining the Rogues wasn’t a matter of him wanting to be one, but why he needed to be one

In short: Axel is a punk kid who wants to fit in with the big boys and the Rogues are the only ones who really gave him a chance, acting like his older siblings. It’s worth noting that canon never mentions any relatives for him so, as far as we know, crime is all he’s ever known

Hi, I just binged your through the walls fic and my heart hurts. Like a lot. In a good way, dw. I’m just so happy things ended up so good and I honestly love all your fics. You’re a great writer. However, is it bad that I’m kind of picturing canon Tim and Jason going to that universe with their unresolved issues and just hurting seeing what could have been? I mean, I don’t think canon Tim even worked thru his issues with his parents. Nor did Jason and ugh, the possibilities just hurt 1/2

2/2 honestly, everything just hurts. Especially your Tim and Jason’s reactions if they ever found out what their canon selves went thru. And actually, that is my question? What do you think everyone’s reactions would be to Canon Tim and Jason? And what would Canon Tim and Jason’s reactions would be to their alternative selves? I really hate thinking this way because dimension and time travel are always my weakness. Oh, well. Again, great job! & pls keep safe!!

Ooh, I always enjoy thinking about how canon characters would interact with AU versions. But DC canon is so contradictory it’s kind hard to pick WHICH canon you’re referring to, haha.

Canon Tim and Jason would certainly be horrified by what happened to their counterparts. TTW!Tim and Jason’s suffering was absolutely horrific, made worse by the fact that they were so young and innocent. But yeah, I do absolutely think they would envy what TTW!Tim and Jason were able to accomplish in the midst of that horror.

The TTW boys have SUCH a tight bond. It’s honestly extraordinary, and sadly it is the sort of bond that can only be forged in the midst of some kind of suffering. But they also are getting the opportunity--and taking it--to work through all of their other traumas, too, stemming from bad parenting and painful childhoods. And yeah, I don’t think canon TIm and Jason have ever really worked through that. They’ve just piled more and more trauma on top of those early hurts, so the old issues are obscured by the new.

They also might, unfortunately, be jealous of the unconditional devotion and love those boys are receiving from TTW!Dick and Bruce... Not that canon!Dick and Bruce don’t love canon!Tim and Jason, but they’ve both made major mistakes. This is even ignoring everything after N52, which I usually do anyway.

As for how the TTW crew would react to canon!Jason and Tim... I think they would be horrified in a different way. They’re so protective of their Tim and Jason, constantly telling them that they don’t have to fight, that they can be safe and be strong at the same time. Canon Tim and Jason are basically soldiers who have been incredibly wounded by their chosen war, both before the age of eighteen. And yes, they both volunteered, in their own way, but what’s happened to them is still awful, and TTW Dick and Bruce and Alfred would be able to see that very clearly. And they would not be happy about it.

I honestly don't understand DC always trying to undermine Raven's powers. I read the current comics that she's in and it is so poorly written and boring. They suck at character development and its so fucked up that she's always brushed aside. And also I'll never forgive them for killing Roy and they keep fucking up Jason. These guys went through a lot and I just wanna see them be happy and I want to see more batfamily moments and team ups like in Batman and Robin Eternal.

Reasons I am mad about Canon Raven:

She’s ALWAYS depowered; always, and she is literally the very definition of an over powered character.

When they attempt to over power her again they fuck it up; like in Titans with Raven’s ‘telepathy’; she’s a fucking empath! NEVER has she been a telepath!

She has never been utilized outside of the Titans; which is infuriating on many levels. Because she needs to go solo; with a big comic or go to JL Dark or hell, team her up with Lucifer! I don’t know, but something outside of the fucking Titans!

Her solo series, while hold much promise are always cut short, or tie into nothing about her canon life.

They just severed her connection with her aunt and cousins, further isolating her again.

I am royally pissed that her connection with Victor Stone, a.k.a. Cyborg, (which I think is canonly her BEST familiar relationship EVER, their dynamic is amazing; it’s also an amazing dynamic for Victor too! So why was it cut!?) has been severed, was briefly rekindled only to be discarded again.

She’s always de-aged; sorry @chromium7sky, but I really hate that because I really think she should be about Jason and Tim’s age, hell, I’d even settle her being Dick’s age, just enough de-aging her! At this rate; and I’m sorry @impulse-goblin, she’ll be a RobRae with Carrie Kelley or Matt McGinnis! Which is so not okay because DC is screwing her over royally.

Marv, her creator, can no longer write her well to be engaging; which is sad.

She’s been royally dumbed down; which really fucking pisses me off, because even though N52 SUCKED BALLS, Raven, while bitchy, was always eager to learn; it’s one of her defining traits! She’s super smart, she’s engaging, she’s empathetic and kind, and rebirth has made it so she struggles with school. -.- Explain that to me, please, she’s never been stupid or struggled learning before. And I get trying to connect with modern readers, and making characters relateable, but that was just plain fucking stupid. There are other characters you can do that with, using Raven does not help in anyway.

I will not get into my issues with N52, there’s many, but mainly: WTF is up with Raven’s Entire Personality!? I mean don’t get me wrong, I loved the design she had, and I loved her on Tim’s team, also their entire friendship was amazing, but WTF, what a Bitch. I wanted to smack her.

They either forget she is a magic user, or they forget she’s a demon with demon abilities or something, but it always seems like one or the other is missing with her.

Off side key irritation too: How come her father doesn’t play a larger part of the DC universe and getting heroes to fear him? I mean come on! Titans plays him up to be like Darksied or Lucifer level of terrifying, and the DC universe: Who’s Trigon? WTF is that about!? You want the Only Daughter Of Trigon to have meaning, to show her power, then why the fuck isn’t Trigon more widely known and feared!? Come On People! We have Darksied’s ENTIRE Family feared, but you want to play Trigon off as eviler than Darksied but the entire DC universe outside Titans is like: Who the Fuck is Trigon!?

Kay, Metal hinted at her connection and importance to the Multiverse, but the DC, I don’t know… Forgot? And somehow the entire reason for her being captured, isolated and singled out by the Batman Who Laughed was forgotten. Granted my favorite panel of her and Victor happened because of that, but seriously; MAJOR PLOT HOLE DC! Come on, we aren’t Marvel, cease these plot holes in your big labels! Be grown ups!

Mainstream Raven hurts my Raven loving heart. But her counterparts are pretty cool, like on Earth 1 or Bombshells or the recent Titans movies, definitely liked her in the Titans live action show, and obviously I loved her in the cartoon; not Titan’s Go as that has helped in destroy her and the Titans.

Now, my issues with Heroes Crisis:

King. Fucking cock teasing bastard tormented us with BatCat for over a year, getting them to the fucking alter then he did that fucking stunt; hell yes I am pissed still, and I am no less angry going into Heroes Crisis.

Kay, now for real.

I have major issues with the plot, thus far, because there doesn’t seem to be one.

Killing Roy and Wally did nothing to further a plot, or even engage in the plot and has just furthered to hurting surrounding characters.

Killing Roy was fucked up and senseless; as a writer I find that appalling.

Killing Wally was unnecessary; especially after all the fucking trouble we had gone through to get that speedster back! I mean COME ON! It’s like you brought him back solely to kill him off, and if that’s the case, someone smack a brain into King’s fucking head.

While the premise of Heroes Crisis was engaging and interesting to read the idea for it, it has been a dismal affair.

Why the fuck are your only suspects Harley Quinn and Micheal Carter, a.k.a. Booster Gold? No seriously want to explain that!?

There is NO WAY Harley would ever hurt or kill Ivy, just no, and DC I don’t care about trying to cater to people and convincing all of Harley and Ivy are straight, it just wouldn’t happen. Ivy and Harley are in love, and I sincerely doubt, that despite EVERYTHING Harley has done in her life, that she would ever kill the woman she loved.

Also, Micheal Carter has selflessly saved the timeline multiple times, and done so without recognition. Yes, he can be full of himself, but where the hell did King come to the conclusion that Carter was a sociopathic narcissist? Someone please explain the basics of human nature to King; PLEASE! For the love of God, someone! I expect this crap from Lobell!

Now to my fury with the Batfamily in it’s current state:

Rebirth presented us with fairly healthy dynamics between the Batfamily members; which was refreshing as all get out, but now… I’d like to rip DC’s heart out and shove it up their ass for what they’ve done.

First, they allowed King to be the ultimate cock tease! Bastard built up the fucking BatCat wedding to be the wedding of the goddamn century; going to make comic history! And he fucks us over like we’re a two cent whore whilst simultaneously destroying the Batfamily.

Second: who the fuck even ALLOWED Lobdell into DC again to write!? I mean really!? Did you asshole not learn your lesson the first time!?

Third, wtf is up with Ric Grayson; I get it, we’re all exceedingly immature for taking an actually socially acceptable nickname from the 1930′s and perverting it into penis jokes. But news flash, Dick’s character has evolved with taking that in stride and laughing it off. Changing his name only pisses us off and furthers our desires to make dick jokes.

Fourth: What the fuck are you guys even doing allowing Lobdell near Jason? I get it Lobdell is some ‘big shot’ good ‘big name to have on a comic’ but his writing is shit, I’ve read better stories from Kindergartners. Lobdell is like the Russo brothers of DC, please remove him from our premise, and I petition for us, the fans, to take custody of Jason from Lobdell for the sake of global comic peace. The Dude Can Not For The Love Of God Write. I’m surprised he even knows how to arrange letters on a piece of paper to form words honestly.

Why aren’t Duke and Cass B’s kids? No seriously? Why!? We all know those are his favorite two kids, so wtf are they doing… anywhere else but with the Bats?

Why is Babs Batgirl? Don’t go with that female empowering crap answer, just don’t, she was a better icon as Oracle than as Batgirl. She’s long since outgrown the role, and she had grown beautifully into the role of Oracle, so run this by me again: Why did we take a beautiful survivor, who created empowerment for people with disabilities while remaining a strong female lead and turn her back into Batgirl? Seriously? Someone explain that to me!?

Thank God DC hasn’t fucked up Tim yet, but Can We Please Stop With Evil Batman Tim!? Tim doesn’t even want to be Batman! He Never Has Wanted To Be Batman!

WTF did you do with Damian’s character development? He is not this baby raging Bat anymore who seeks to kill everyone who crosses him. Also what the hell was up with the whole Dami’s got a secret prison thing? That lead to nothing and has since been dropped, but seriously people, who is the lead brain in DC right now allowing this shit!?

Again, I must ask, what’s up with evil Bat futures; have we NO HOPE that these boys can grow up and actually be decent people!? Really. I want to know. I don’t get the options you’ve given these heroes.

Why does B have a double standard when it comes to Kate and Jason; and don’t say it’s because Jason’s killed, Damian’s killed and B is trying to be a good dad to him, so what’s up with this shit!? Is it really so much easier to have the rift between B and Jay than attempt to amend it!? If B has a problem with Jason using guns then the same problem should be applied to Kate; I don’t care about her likability, she’s a bitch and the double standard should cease.

And why is Jason trying to connect with Willis Todd? Willis was an abuse fucker or did Lobdell for get his own canon material again? Someone please remove Lobdell from DC premises! PLEASE! Send him to Marvel or something, I don’t care, but stop allowing him to fuck over Jason because he wants to!

Now, again, I’m brought to the double standards B has and his own reckless behavior. DC please, either find a ethics and morals person to join your writing team, or grow a fucking brain because you are precariously close to having Batman become the killer and the villain.

Why are we isolating the Bats again, when they were so connected at the start of Rebirth? I want to read about the Batfamily BEING A Family! Not this divide and pit against each other crap.

The worst part of all this is, Rebirth actually started off great! Now it’s a flaming pile of wreckage and I almost wish we’d go back to N52 if only to stop watching the same trainwreck over and over happen.

oh boy, it's a complicated mess. wildstorm's jenny q and rebirth jenny q are so different in origins and ages they might be two different people entirely.

this is very long so its under the cut !!! and i apologize in advance if it doesnt make a lick of sense at all.

— wildstorm's ending:

the last time we've ever seen jenny q in wildstorm comics was during one of WS's last hurrah of a storyline called number of the beast, where we see her wrap her arms around the carrier's uncaged and dangerous powersource, the miniaturized universe.

before that, it seems like the writers had already decided her fate by showing that very same scene in a comic that came out before notb; it was shown in midnighter: armageddon where midnighter traveled to the future and was told what happened to his daughter by none other than an older and more rough-looking apollo:

we never saw her in wildstorm's comics after that, and she was only mentioned in passing a few times iirc.

— rebirth/n52:

jenny quantum appears in dc rebirth's stormwatch (2011), which is a complete reboot of the authority and some other wildstorm characters. it is nothing like the 90s-00s origins of the authority that we all know. in this reboot, jenny q ( full name jennifer emily quantum ) was raised by stormwatch in a space station and was never adopted by midnighter and apollo. she's a whole 12 years old in this reboot and was mentored mostly by martian manhunter and some other guy.

basically, to summarize the entire comic: it's bad in every way imaginable — not "shock value" bad ( although midnighter did try to kill jenny because he thought she was dangerous and she, in return, blackmails him so many times to "keep him in line" or some shit like that ) but still pretty fucking Bad.

again: we never see her after this because for some reason, dc must really hate her for 1) killing / making her disappear without a trace in notb, 2) throwing her in comic limbo in rebirth.

this may not make absolute sense so, again, i'm sorry about it.

jenny q saves the wildstorm universe and stops the world from ending by 1) stablizing the caged universe inside the carrier and thus not making it a danger to anyone, keeping the carrier away from earth so it doesnt crash land there; 2) banishing those responsible for the apocalypse to another dimension where they cannot and will not return no matter what.

thus ensuring that the entire wildstorm universe still exists. up until the flashpoint event happens. that's when WS universe gets inducted into the dc multiverse. ( behind the scene fun fact: wildstorm was officially purchased by dc comics in 2010, and flashpoint happened year later, in 2011. ) mind you, jenny q is WS' most powerful character because she can literally manipulate reality at the very seams. so she can pretty much do anything she puts her mind and heart to.

that means WS universe exists but separately from the main continuity.

but by some cosmic mishap or another, the authority ( and all the other wildstorm characters that appeared in rebirth ) got stuck in dc's main continuity timeline, prime earth, and cannot go back to their own universe. so now the authority exists in the main timeline.

the team isnt defunct by any means necessary but they arent as together anymore, after years of living in prime earth. they come together sometimes when the need arises but other than that, shen and angie are happily together somewhere in the world, habib, apollo, midnighter, and jenny q are somewhere else. jack doesnt exist in this because i said so.

( steve orlando's midnighter + m&a still happens though because that's some very important character development !! )

so yeah, there ya have it !! my perfectly (in)coherent idea of how jenny q can exist in dc's main continuity !! ( and how you can have m and apollo in the continuity as well without fucking up their original backstories. )

dc wants what i have. ( i dont know where this puts the wild storm comic but that exists too, somehow in some way it does, dont question it. )

Hey guys! I am finally starting on some of my prompts and h/c bingo stories. This first fic is for the square on my card for Cuddles. I had a need for Dick and Damian cuddling so I figured I’d write something for this spot.

This fic starts directly after the events of the Robin War story in n52. Highlights you’d need to know if you haven’t read those comics are: Dick is still in Spyral, Bruce doesn’t remember any of them, and both Dick and Damian tried to give themselves over to the Court (or Parliament?) of Owls to stop the events of the comics. Damian first, then Dick. If you have other questions just ask.

Dick should have been shaking. His heart was racing and his mind felt like it had been dropped into Oz. But not a bright and bubbly Oz, one made of a dark forest of terror and suffering.

All he wanted to was to reach out to Damian and pull him into his arms, to clutch his brother with all his might and will the events of the past few days to have been a dream. Instead he stepped back as his brother's directed the remaining Robins (really just children, children who shouldn't be in this fight. Who should have never been in it) to their homes. He offered a bright smile he didn't feel and waved his heart in

Dick was left standing with his three brothers. Two of them left with a wave and a nod. The third, a set of shoulders and a tight back, a ball of anxiety and unspoken words and uncertainty looked so much like he had years ago at his father’s funeral.

Dick did what he’d done then, he laid a hand on Damian’s shoulder and turned him around.

Together they went to the only place they had left. The only place they’d had the last time they’d been left in Gotham without their father (even if this time there was less death and more memory loss).

They went to the penthouse.

Dick tossed his Spyral uniform across the couch after he discovered old sweats smelling fresh and clean and left like magic for both him and Damian tucked away. Damian’s uniform was folded, each corner carefully and intentionally constructed.

Then there were showers and late night pizza to fill their stomachs and clear their minds. And still there was a weight between them. The old comfort clashing with everything unsaid and unsure.

Dick could not pull his attention away from Damian for long. Memorizing his brother’s face. Shoving back all the fear freezing his chest. He had been dead. He was back. He had given himself to the owls. He was safe--and also not. Nothing could make Dick forget that there was a bomb tick tick ticking away in his head.

Something warm and weighty flopped against Dick’s arm, it was Damian leaning into him. Dick watched as he curled his legs closer to his chest and snagged one more slice of pizza from the box on the coffee table in front of them, eating as he stared at the blank tv in front of them. They hadn’t bothered to put anything on, neither moving to even see if the loft still got reception. Dick let him lay there, putting his arm to sleep as they worked their way through the box.

Dick carried Damian to his own old room laying down next to him. Damian needed no prompting to snuggle close, his arms finding their way around his back, his head tucked into Dick’s chest. Dick found that together in the dark he could breathe, his chest rising and falling against the warmth that was his brother.

Damian’s arms squeezed him as words finally came, “I hate you.”

“Don’t say that.” Dick murmured into his hair, not at all bothered by the words. He’d known they were coming. Damian was as upset at Dick for giving himself up as Dick had been for Damian. “I have to go back tomorrow.”

His brother’s arms didn’t lose their strength, “You are a fool.”

There was silence between them for a long while. Dick let it stay that way, waiting out Damian as he decided.

“You should not have sacrificed yourself for me. I had things under control.”

Now it was Dick’s turn to squeeze his brother, “They were going to go after one of you, or all of you.” he told him, “I was always going to take someone’s place.” They knew his weakness. They had known how to lure him to Gotham. How to convince him to finally join them. How to force his hand.

He breathed in the smell of his brother, trying to ignore the way his ears heard phantom tick tick ticks. They knew exactly what buttons to push, and unfortunately for them the owls had pushed one too many.

“I love you.” he said.

Damian’s fists squeezed his shirt at his back.

“I hate them.” he whispered.

“So do I, kiddo.” Dick told him. And he did. He hated them for taking the momentary peace in Dick’s life and turning it upside down. Hated them for putting Damian in danger the second Dick had him back. Hated them for using his brother against him.

Silence again. Damian’s grip was strong, his face squished into Dick’s chest. Their breathing together. An invisible clock ticking away. The minutes between their moments and morning. Between Spyral and Dick’s new drive to save Damian. Between his little brother going back out into Gotham with no one.

“I wish I could take you with me.” Dick said running a hand through Damian's hair.

“You know I must protect the city in Father’s stead.” The longing in his voice telling Dick the answer he’d never give ‘Then take me with you. Let me work by your side again.’

Damian wouldn’t ask to go. He might insist if he thought Dick would be worse off without him. But Dick wouldn’t let him go. Would give Spyral the chance to use his baby brother. Wouldn’t put him at risk again.

“I missed you.” he said instead, “Every second of every day.” He hadn't said it when he'd first seen Damian on that rooftop. Hadn't had time when he’d come back to deal with the owls and Robins.

“Tt. You are too sentimental.” But Damian snuggled closer, curling towards Dick. “I missed you as well. And do not think that stops after today. I will miss you until you have taken apart that stupid spy organization.”

Dick chuckled, “Now which one of us is sentimental.”

“I am simply stating the truth, until you return you are out of contact range.”

Dick worked out a tangle in Damian's hair, “You’ll be okay here?”

“Todd and Drake are still operating within Gotham.” Damian said, “They seem willing enough to assist if I need it.”

Dick teased a tangle from Damian’s curls, “I’m not asking about patrol.”

“I will be fine, Richard.” Damian said, “Besides, I am confident that Father will remember everything soon.”

Dick hoped that were true. He wanted his next return to be met by more than a need to disguise himself or a run in with a city so wildly different than everything he’d known. He wanted to come home to familiar sights and sounds. He missed his dad and Alfred. And he still couldn’t quite fill the gap in his chest that was the loss of his baby brother, even with him right here.

He curled around Damian, trying to erase the ache that came with thinking about the manor one person fewer. Trying to erase the months of running from his own bleeding heart. Trying to convince himself that the warm child in his arms wasn’t going to evaporate or turn to ice.

“You’re alive.” he said, voice thick. “You’re really here.”

Damian shifted, adjusting his grip on Dick’s back, his knuckles digging into the skin and his spine. “As are you.” his voice was so quiet Dick almost didn’t hear it, his brother’s chest hitching against his own.

“I’m sorry.” Dick said, “I’m so sorry. For a hundred things I’m sorry.”

Damian hiccuped and sniffed, trying his best to hold back tears, “I do not blame you. I am happy you are alive.”

Dick squeezed Damian tighter. Me too was far from the perfect response. There were no words to convey just how happy he was to have Damian alive again. Damian snuggled into the squeeze.

Dick didn’t sleep. Not even after Damian had nodded off, snoring quiet puffs against Dick’s chest. Dick stayed awake, comfortable with the silence. He had every tick of the clock to soak in the presence of his brother, and refused to lose that. If he could have had his whole family wrapped around him, curled close, that would be perfect. Having his Robin again was almost as perfect.
