Re: The Worst Wedding
Hear me out. Tim Drake and Ra’s Al Ghul.
Because!!! 1) There is some unhinged plan in Tim’s mind. And he’s faking this, but is absolutely committed to the bit. He’s created a wedding registry at Best Buy and everything. 2) Talia would absolutely refuse to be related to this gremlin child and would protest. 3) Damian would be catatonic. 4) Bruce is going through plans A-679.65ab trying to game out what is happening and stop this. 5) Conner is showing up to murder Ra’s. 6) Clark is showing up to stop Conner from becoming a murderer and Bruce from going insane. 7) Bernard is just curious at this point and goes along with it and has a string board with yarn in his closet. 8) Young Justice. 9) Stephanie. 10) Alfred refuses to let them use Martha’s rose garden. 11) No one invited Hal Jordan, but he’s there anyway and is eating his weight in amuse bouche. 12) Dick wants to be supportive, but is hospitalized for an ulcer. 13) Jason comes to the wedding just covered in weapons, but also invited himself to the cake tasting. 14) Ra’s is the only one serious about this and is a fucking creep about it. 15) Martial Law is declared in Bristol of all places.
This is the most compelling one I’ve heard so far!
Nothing like shock and hatred to get both sides of those families showing up in full force. The question is, would they even manage to get through the ceremony without disaster?

Dick: Ah so youre aging sequentially
Tim, extremely tired: Do you ever dream about sleeping?
Steph, extremely confused:…no??
Tim: good. If you did youd be dead.
Bruce: Lets ride.
Robin!Jason who is very new to this: Wha- Ride where?
Bruce: We’ve got people in the Jandy River that need saving.
Bruce: Come on.
Jason: You mean we’re going there? Together? Like right now?
Tim, extremely dirty and has a cut on his face walking into Drake Manor:
Jack, not paying attention: Hey Tim, did you get the job?
Tim: Yeah, just finished my first day.
Jack: So hows work?
Tim: Uh it was pretty… interesting.
Bernard: Hey, you never told us what you do at your new job
Tim: *just stares wide eyed silently*
Bruce: While we were patrolling, Poison Ivy stole packs of baby bottles, can you guess why?

Jason, who died before he finished highschool: Same thing
Non-Bat who needs the antidote for Joker gas or something: Will this hurt?
Black Bat: Yes, very much.
Bernard, talking about a criminal the Bats cant catch: Its not Batmans fault, he just needs a better sidekick
Tim: One more time.
Bernard, who knows: Just saying, I’d be way better at catching criminals than the current Robin
Dick: I’m gonna die..
Jason: Not in the house. If you’re gonna die, do it outside
Tim: I’m Robin.
Bernard: I know. I figured that out.
Damian: Todd, I wish to speak to you about something.
Jason: BABIES COME FROM THE BABY STORE
Oracle: Steph, come to Gotham Park right now!
Steph: noo, I’m not in the mood for trees
Oracle: did i ask you what youre in the mood for?
Vikki Vale: So, Spoiler, how did you catch Two Face?
Spoiler: I’d love to take all the credit, but it was really all thanks to my partner, Black Bat.
Vikki: Interesting. Black Bat, can you tell us more?
Black Bat: No.
It really bothers me the lack of Babs, Cass, and Duke worthy quotes there are 😔😔 also my personal favs show a lot and im sorry for that, but there will be more as i think of them, these are just eps 1-4, the rest will be posted like in a queue or something and as single quotes cus im eepy

at the center of gotham, lies its oldest public hospital — gotham general. it’s staff are kind and compassionate, if a little intolerant of bullshit. the city may not care about the crimes that occur in it but the people certainly do. gotham’s emergency services are renowned throughout the nation as one of the best.
the ER nurses at gotham general love to gossip and their latest is about how their ever-reliable EMT bernard dowd, who'll rush into burning buildings if he thinks he can save one more person, who smiles so brightly and brings them cupcakes on his days off but has such sad eyes, seems so lonely. they determinedly decide to find a date for him. maybe dr. zacharia thomas, their latest trauma surgeon? yes, yes! he's only a few years older, bernard knows him, they get along, and most importantly, he's got a stable job. he'll be perfect for their bernard!
and then, literally only days after they decide to set up dr. zacharia and bernard on a date, head trauma nurse marissa santos comes running in with a copy of gotham daily, clutched in her hand.
"look! look! nakita mo ba ang balita?" she whisper-yells, "did you see the news?!"
instantly they're all crowding around her, trying to see the paper. covering the front page is a blurry photo of a black-haired man engaged in a passionate game of tonsil-hockey with someone who is unmistakably their youngest EMT. he's still wearing his uniform for christ's sake! in the largest font known to man, "WAYNE'S NEW PARAMOUR?" is written at the top.
"he's dating the wayne ceo!" marissa gushes excitedly.
"isn't he a little too old for bernard?" someone pipes up from the back.
"not the father, you idiot! the son! timothy!"
that's way better than their candidate. everyone is stoked. by nightfall, everyone in the ER knows that bernard dowd is dating timothy drake-wayne, the youngest ceo wayne enterprises has ever had.
when bear stops by, at around 2 in the morning, dropping of the last patient from his shift, he's immediately accosted by the nurses.
"whoa! hey!" he exclaims as they lead him to the nurse's station and sit him down in a chair, "what's going on?"
marissa slams the paper down in front of him, "spill."
bernard groans and turns cherry red, "oh my god tita. don't you guys have patients to attend to?"
"already taken care of." nurse gu says.
"what about mr. gomez, the one with third degree burns that just came in?" bernard tries desperately.
"dr. zacharia is already on it." dr. esperanza responds, "so spill."
their youngest tries one last time, "how do you even know if that's me?"
"there are like 10 blonde people in the EMT department and considering all of them are older than you and none of them seem to have the three ear piercings that kid in this picture does, we're gonna have to assume it's you." dr. farah nasim, one half of the head of the ER, says.
bernard turns on her with a betrayed look.
"sorry kid," she snorts, "also, you're still wearing your uniform in the photo. it says 'dowd' on the shoulder."
"im too old to be bossed around like this." he mutters before sighing, "alright what'd'ya want to know?"
"tell us everything!" marissa says, "how did you two meet?"
"we were friends in high school and we fell out of touch after junior year. he hit me up on insta 6 months ago and we reconnected."
"oh my god!! they're high school sweethearts!" nurse gu squeals, "that's so cute!"
"tell us more! who asked who out?"
"okay well, technically he asked me out but he didn't know he was asking me out. but we went on this date at this restaurant and it got attacked by some villain and red robin, but he was going by robin at the time, rescued. so i told robin, 'hey if i make it out of this, tell tim drake, i would've liked to finish our date'. and then, tim, shows up at my door the next day and says 'i don't know what this feeling i get when i'm near you is, but i'd like to find out'. and the rest is history."
"bernard, what the hell?" dr. esperanza says shocked, "that's the most rom-com-esque story i've ever heard."
"what?" bernard blushes, "no it's not."
"bear," esperanza says slowly, "he showed up at your door and said 'i don't know what this feeling i get when i'm near you is, but i want to find out.' that is something straight out of the notebook."
"no, no! he's such a dork!" bernard assures them frantically, "he does this thing, when he laughs too hard, he snorts and it sets him off again and it just keeps going. and you should've seen him in high school, the biggest skater boy to ever exist. he's teaching me..."
and bernard goes on and on for the next 15 minutes, trailing off only when he notices them all smiling at him.
"what?" he says shyly.
"you're in love with him, aren't you?" dr. farah says.
bernard chokes, "what?! no! ...maybe?"
everyone shares a look between each other. marissa steps forward, "well on behalf of the gotham general ER staff, i can assure you, we all approve."
"thank you?"
"bring him around sometime!" nurse gu says, "we'd all like to meet him."
"why? so you can give him the shovel talk?"
"of course!" dr. farah says, smiling widely, "he’s dating our youngest! we have to threaten him!"
bernard's voice is suspiciously wet when says a few moments later, "thanks guys."
and so on it goes for the next few months until marissa comes back after her break, deathly pale. everyone worries but she refuses to tell anyone what's wrong. and then a few weeks later, nurse gu goes on his break and comes back shocked. and then a month later, dr. zacharia comes back from a quick step outside, lips sealed shut.
and on it goes until there is one glaring truth the gotham general ER night staff cannot ignore:
bernard dowd is dating red robin. open relationship or cheating, to be determined.
a year after the news about tim drake and bernard had been released, and half a year after the, what the staff has taken to calling it, Red Robin Scandal™ began, dr. farah calls a night staff meeting.
the staff meeting is boring as usual until the end when dr. farah opens the conversation to the staff to voice their concerns.
"are we going to talk about the elephant in the room?" dr. esperanza asks.
"i think bernard might be cheating on his boyfriend!" marissa blurts out before slapping her hands over her mouth, horrified.
“oh thank god.” esperanza sighs.
"wait you saw them too?" nurse gu asks.
"in the narrow walkway," dr. zacharia starts.
"between the ER and jacobson building." dr. esperanza finishes.
"exactly!" marissa says.
"i caught them in the parking lot once." dr. farah admits, mouth pressed into a grim line, "they were pressed up against the fence in the back — y'know where the light doesn't shine? — kissing each other like they'd just come back from world war 2."
"ay, how could that boy be so stupid?" marissa sighs, "getting caught up with a vigilante?"
"maybe it's like polyamory?" esperanza says, ever hopeful.
"whatever it is," farah says, "he should know better than to get involved with those people. we have to talk to him."
they pull bernard into an unused conference room, just the 5 of them, 3 weeks later.
"hey, hey!" bernard exclaims as they shove him into a chair, "what's going on?"
nobody speaks.
"guys?"
"are you cheating on tim drake?"
"what?"
"are you cheating on tim drake?" marissa repeats.
"no! why would you think that?"
"everyone on the night staff has caught you kissing red robin at least once. wanna try that again?" farah says.
bernard sighs, "is that what this is about? doc, i swear to god, i'm not cheating on tim."
"so he knows?" zacharia asks.
"yes zach, tim knows about me and red robin."
"and he's okay with it?"
"yes. tim doesn't mind me dating both of them." bernard says, a smile playing on his lips.
nobody speaks for a while.
"so..." bernard breaks the silence first, "are we good here? do you approve?"
"no." esperanza says, "we don't approve."
"what?"
"he's no good for you." nurse gu says.
"you don't even know him." bernard says incredulously.
"oh and you do?" zacharia says scathingly, "he's a vigilante bear. how much do you really know?"
"more than you zach!"
pleadingly bernard turns toward farah, "c'mon doc, you don't agree do you?"
"you know, when you first started dating tim drake, i had my reservations. rich people and all that. but i figured with all that money, if you ever got roped into rich people problems, tim's money would help out. you'd be taken care of and he clearly loves you, so i didn't mind too much."
"but this..." farah trails off, "i can't accept this."
turning towards marissa, "tita, please."
"don't do that, bear. wag kang tanga. it's not good to be with him."
"he loves me! is that not enough?" bernard near-yells, "i thought that's what you wanted. someone who loves me!"
"enough to quit being a vigilante?" esperanza asks.
"quit being a vigilante? are you guys hearing yourself?" bernard asks angrily, "he saves the city on a near-nightly basis and you want me to ask him to give it all up because what? he's dating me?"
"so let him save the city without you." nurse gu says, "why does he need to drag you into it?"
"he's not dragging me into anything! i am a full consenting adult! i chose him! what’s so different about what he and i do anyway?"
“well for one, our job is legal. and two, there are safety measures put in place so that you don’t get hurt. so that your coworkers don’t get hurt. your man walks into the joker’s lair with an inch of kevlar and a prayer on his lips.” zacharia says.
nurse gu sighs, "look. nobody here is mad at him for saving the city. everyone here knows somebody who has been saved by the bats. but the deal is that they save the city and they don't drag anybody else into it."
"the bats, whoever they are? they chose that life. for whatever reason, they chose that life and all the dangers that go with it. you’re not stupid bear, don’t get involved with whatever he has going on. pick literally anyone else.” farah says.
“you need a third person that badly? take zach! the ER was planning on setting you up with him before we found out about tim, anyway.”
“what?” zacharia says, rounding on nurse gu.
“you know what?” bernard says, pinching the bridge of his nose tiredly, “ i don’t have to explain myself to you guys.”
“you can’t marry him.” marissa says.
“who said anything about marriage? i’m 22!”
“you clearly love tim. you two seem like you’re going to last a while and if you love red robin they way you love tim, them somewhere along those years of being together then you’re going to start thinking of marriage. what then? how are you going to explain red robin to the people you love?”
“we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”
“look, bernard,” farah says gently, “we’re not doing this cause we don’t want you to be happy. you mean a lot to me, i think of you as my son. we just-”
“you’re not my mom.” bernard snaps out, “you’re not my mom, you’re not my aunt, my uncle, my brother. you guys aren’t anything to me!”
he turns and walks away.
“farah do something.” marissa hisses.
“let him go. he said he’s an adult right? then let him make his choices.”
“but,” she says, raising her voice so bernard can hear her, “if anything goes wrong, and i mean anything at all, i hope he knows that adults don’t have to do everything by themselves. that they can ask people for help.”
bernard’s hands still on the doorknob. “thank you.” he says voice rough, “nothing will happen, but thank you for the offer.” and he walks out the door.
bernard dowd, is 22 year old EMT that has too much heart and not enough brain. he’ll rush into burning buildings if he thinks he has even a minute chance of saving someone. he’s kind and he’s sweet and more importantly, he’s dating timothy drake-wayne, ceo of wayne enterprises.
if you ask the ER night staff at gotham general, after a lot of prodding, they might tell you that bernard dowd was one of the youngest EMTs to ever join the gotham county emergency medical services. they might tell you that bernard dowd has been wondering if he should become an AEMT or a paramedic. they might tell you that as the major receiver for all patients, bernard saw them all the time and imprinted on them like a baby duck. and if you’re really close they might, tell you the ER’s biggest secret: bernard dowd is dating both timothy drake-wayne and red robin. or they might just let you walk in on them making out behind the ER. whatever comes first really.
(if you get close enough to a certain group of people on the ER night staff, they’ll tell you that bernard dowd has two hands and he uses them to hold onto his boyfriends.
they’ll tell you that tim drake is a nice boy and they’re a little worried about their bernard fitting into the circles a wayne walks in, but he’s a nice boy who clearly loves bernard, so they’re not too worried.
they’ll tell you that that red robin character is no good for their bernard and has no business getting so close to their youngest. that red robin is going to get bernard into trouble one day, the kind of trouble that you don’t come back from.
and if you get really close to them, they’ll tell you over lunch breaks and muttered whispers, that both boys are going to break their youngest’s heart. and that if they had to pick, red robin will do it first. that their bernard loves a little too deeply and that they're worried that it’ll break bernard.
but they’re not too worried, they say. because bernard has them and if that bastard red robin breaks his heart, then they’ll pick up the pieces, they’ll sew him back together if they have to. after all, bernard stitches up half of gotham every night, this is the least they could do.)

Ko-fi thank-you sentences for Iron, Scream_kinh, and ComfyB; Kon meets pink kryptonite and decides to fuck Tim and his boyfriend about it.
Kon is kneeling on the bed completely naked, and Tim and Bernard are both still sitting against the headboard completely dressed. That was hot while he was "showing off" for them, but now . . .
"C'mon already, I showed you both the goods," he says, flashing them both a flirty, dirty grin that Cissie once resignedly called a "panty-dropper" of an expression before much less resignedly proving that it was, and will hopefully have similar effects on the opposite end of the gender spectrum. "Lemme see what you're packing."
"Alright," Tim says, the corner of his own mouth quirking in amusement. "It's only fair, I suppose."
"Well we're definitely not gonna measure up, but I guess we do need our dicks out to actually fuck you the way you so clearly deserve to be, yeah," Bernard says with a laugh, leaning back on his hands. Kon wants to get on top of him right now, hearing that "deserve". Even just as a jokey aside, it's–affecting, yeah.
"Yeah, you do," he agrees, grinning wider. "So lemme see what I deserve, then."
"Oh, well, you are a guest, we should be hospitable," Bernard replies graciously, making a magnanimous gesture with one hand before unzipping his jeans. Tim lets out a quiet chuckle and takes one last picture of Kon before unzipping his too, and then both of them, well . . . then both of them pull out their cocks for him. Neither of them is fully hard, but they're both visibly turned on, and Kon tilts his head and just . . . looks, for a moment.
Tim's skin is unsurprisingly paler and Bernard's apparently a natural blond, and they're both significantly smaller than him but pretty comparably sized to each other, and both cut. And it's not like he really pays all that much attention to other dudes' dicks, like, ever, but they both look really . . .
Kon, momentarily, wonders how quick he could get them both fully hard.
And also how they'd both look then.
"Huh, yeah, your dicks absolutely do look good to me, weird," he says, mildly surprised by that realization but less surprised by the immediate temptation to just grab them both at once and touch. He is, after all, who he is as a person. "Alright, I guess not weird, all things and gay space rocks considered, but I still feel like it should be weird."
"Too weird?" Tim asks, looking just barely cautious. Kon shoots him a dubious look and grabs a condom out of the box Bernard dug out of the nightstand for them.
"Tim, you absolute moron, if you in any way prevent me from choking myself on your cock for your boyfriend's entertainment, I will never fucking forgive you," he says.
"Seconded," Bernard says.
"Ngh," Tim says. Kon, as a man with the correct and appropriate priorities, tears open the condom and then gets immediately distracted by the sight of bright lime-green latex and can't help brightening up a bit himself in delight.
"Oh these are candy-colored, fuck yeah," he says approvingly. "Are they flavored too?"
". . . I vetoed the flavored ones but now I'm deeply regretting that decision, to be honest," Tim admits, his face flushing, and Kon mock-pouts at him.
"Booooo, no fun," he says. "Bet Starfire and Nightwing would've had the flavored ones."
"Tim, can I just marry your bestie? Is that cool?" Bernard asks with a wide grin, looking pretty damn delighted himself. "Is our relationship there yet, where I can marry your stupidly hot best friend and his aesthetically perfect dick and you'll be fine with it?"
"Excuse you, I am obviously the kept boy in this scenario," Kon huffs, flicking the torn condom wrapper in the direction of Tim's trash can. "I look like marriage material to you?"
"You look like the last party favor in a Vegas honeymoon suite in the middle of Pride, and I very much mean that as a compliment," Bernard says feelingly. Which, well, Kon absolutely did automatically take it as one, he didn't actually need the clarification there.
Though he does appreciate it, admittedly.
Tim doesn't tell him what to do this time, but Kon kinda already has a goal in mind here, so he just grins flirty and dirty at them both again and leans forward towards Tim, giving him a wink as he wags the unwrapped condom at him.
"You still look good in green, right, man?" he asks teasingly. Tim visibly swallows, and Kon watches his pupils dilate.
And he feels his cock twitch.
Fuck, Kon loves his TTK.

It is the second fic I’ve written based on my December Prompt List (linked) Dialog prompt #6: “Let’s skip the office party and go out on the town instead!” I changed the wording a bit, but this is basically all the times Aaron and the reader don’t have the right words to confess, and the one time they don’t need them to get their message across. There is one short mention of Aaron being tortured on a case, and I plan on turning that into a full fic soon. So look forward to that (?). I hope you have a great evening and stay safe. If you like this fic, likes, comments, and reblogs are appreciated! Love Levi - ❤️

Aaron looked around the room which was shockingly full for it being 9:30 p.m. He scanned the groups of people clustered around tables and sitting in chairs talking. Some had plates of food, others glasses of alcohol or sparkling soda. The person whom the supervisory special agent was looking for wasn’t there. He wondered if she was using the lady's room. The last time he’d seen _y/n_ she was being cornered by Freddy from finance. Aaron hadn’t attempted to listen in on the conversation because it was mostly Fred talking to _y/n_. It seemed the pox-faced man wasn’t letting _y/n_ get a word in edge-wise. That sounded like a personal hell that he would avoid at all costs. He had to do enough wine-ing and small talk at the annual Winter Holiday party as it was. He’d talked to Strauss, the Director of the Pentagon, and all the other heads of teams that had made it to Quantico for the party. He’d heard about so many cases that they started to blend together, but for Aaron, nothing would top his team or the crimes they solved. Hotch listened to Bernard Shaw, head agent for the Tax Fraud department, as the white-haired man droned on about a new loophole for the Cayman Islands and how much of a pain it had been that year. Aaron looked over his team with a soft appreciation for how hard they all worked, how they had gelled to feel more like a family than just profilers doing a difficult, dangerous job. There was Derek, who could always be called on to help with anything. The built agent was talking to Spencer. The genius had been so young when he joined the team. Aaron had taken on a fatherly role with Spencer without even thinking about it. Before Jack had ever been born. Rossi had just taken Aaron’s place with Strauss, and they were talking about some half-shared hobby or new bureau policy. Both of those conversations looked the same. Hotch caught Dave’s eye and the older man gave a small shrug, indicating, “This is what the holiday party is for. Making nice one last time before we get a break.” Aaron gave a small nod of agreement before turning his attention back to Shaw. The man hadn’t noticed as Aaron’s attention had waned and then returned to him. Hotch cleared his throat and said, “I’m going to refresh my drink, but it was good to catch up, Bernard, and good luck in dealing with the fallout of S.B. 103b.” Bernard nodded, and the two men shook hands before Aaron walked back to the table with the alcohol on offer. As Hotch poured himself a glass of white. He guessed at how much the liquor alone for this party cost. His guess was around 2,000 dollars. The FBI didn’t ever recommend frivolous spending, but even they realized that sticking a hundred agents and department heads together required the good stuff.
As Aaron sipped on the cool chablis, he swirled the liquid in his glass slightly. The rare sound of mirth at this dull and quiet frankly depressing party was coming from his team. It was Emily, JJ, Garcia, and _y/n_.” As he looked at _y/n_ in her semi-formal _y/f/c_ dress that was just long enough to be appropriate, Hotch assumed it was some cocktail dress _y/n_ had pulled from the back of a closet behind all of _y/n_ business formal and work attire. The black tights made the outfit work in a fashion way that Aaron didn’t have the right words for. He had to tear his eyes away because if he kept looking at _y/l/n_ much longer, the butterflies in his stomach would soon unfurl their wings and move into his ribcage in a way that he hadn’t felt in a long time. Aaron moved to Rossi, who was free now for support. Dave grounded him, which he needed right now. His feelings for _y/n_ had been coming to a head for months now and somehow, Aaron didn’t feel the bureau holiday party was the place for a confession. Even if _y/n_ was receptive to his advances, he worried. His role as her superior and the age gap had him wondering if they had enough in common to sustain a relationship. They’d grown up in different decades, and y/n_ seemed to have the youth and energy he lacked as he neared late middle age. The part of Aaron that longed for _y/n_ in unexplored ways knew that Hotch’s concerns were self-imposed. That _y/n_ had been sending him small signs of affection and care that didn’t even think he deserved. But Aaron’s fear was real and steeped in policy and power dynamics that would come with having a committed relationship with _y/n_. Hotch moved next to Rossi and asked his friend about his New Year's plan. If he was currently seeing anyone. The basic life and catching up questions that they rarely had time for during work. As Dave answered, Hotch’s eye kept flicking back to _y/n_, as she laughed at some comment of Penelope’s. Rossi noticed and stopped talking about himself. Instead, he said, “She’s not going to wait forever you know, Aaron. _y/n_’s a patient person, but I think she deserves to know how you feel about her.” This comment had Hotch flush and take a breath in. Aaron had tried very hard to keep any of his feelings for _y/n_ hidden beneath a cloak of professionalism and feigned disinterest in the team's personal life as a whole. After all, he was their boss foremost, but it was hard to tune out when the team spoke of their weekends. It was doubly so when it was _y/n_. He’d overhear her complaints about bad dates and rent, and how her dryer was broken in her unit. Hotch had wanted to offer to fix it himself but stopped himself before the words could slip from his mouth. He’d also heard her when she talked about the good things like a new cafe she had found, or getting tickets for a band she adored. If _y/n_ was talking and Aaron was around, he listened but tried to look very hard to not look like he was listening. He wondered if he had played into that a little too hard. Hotch looked at Rossi and asked, “Is it that obvious? And what if _y/n_ doesn’t feel the same way? Her feelings could just be due to proximity, or that I’m her boss or something.” Rossi scoffed and said, “You’re deflecting, Aaron. This isn’t Fifty Shades of Grey. A young woman is allowed to have feelings for a guy, who in my opinion is a pretty good catch.” Dave’s complement had Aaron scoff, but that didn’t stop Rossi from continuing. “Listen, Hotch. I knew you liked her and that she liked you ever since you were in the hospital after the case in Indianapolis. I think what happened in that hospital room told me that there was more than just a feeling of friendship between you and _y/n_. As for whether her feelings are the same way for you and you do for her, I can’t tell you. I’m no love expert. But you’re never going to know how she feels about you unless you ask. And I think you both deserve to know the answer, Hotch.”
With those words of advice, Dave gave Aaron a pat on the arm and excused himself for the night. The older profiler had done the rounds with the higher-ups and was excited to head home, nurse a whiskey, and watch an episode of The Suprano’s. Aaron on the other hand still had about five people to speak to before he could excuse himself. The added discussion about _y/n_ wasn’t going to make small talk any easier. So, with wine still in hand, he steeled himself for another hour of conversation. Hotch had almost made it through the last of his people. He needed to “catch up with.” The room had cleared significantly since his talk with Rossi. Derek, Spencer, and Em had all left, waving or saying a quick goodbye to him as they exited. Garcia was talking to a tech friend of hers from the third floor, and JJ was speaking in hushed tones to Will. But _y/n_ was nowhere to be found. Hotch watched as Arnold, the last person he should talk to approached him. Aaron didn’t think he could take any more small talk, and because Arnold was in Legal, he always asked Aaron loads of questions. Although Hotch didn’t mind flexing his JD now and again, he preferred to do it in a courtroom, not at parties, and not with Arnold Shortes nearly taking notes over their conversation. Aaron turned on his heel and walked quickly to the elevator before Arnold could catch him. Even after a few minutes _y/n_ still hadn’t come back into the second-floor conference room which had been cleared and rearranged for the party. He considered that _y/n_ might have dipped out with Emily, but he was sure she would have told him goodbye before she had left. She always told him goodbye unless he was in a meeting or seemed overly absorbed in his paperwork. _y/n_ introducing her comings and goings had become so routine that he used it as an informal clock now. _y/n_ would always enter the bullpen at 7:45 a.m. sharp unless there was something amiss. And then in the evenings at 5:10 p.m., she’d knock on his office door and wave before skipping down the stairs and to a life that Aaron assumed was filled with much more interesting things than his own. In fact, Hotch had become so accustomed to using _y/n_’s timeliness that he had almost missed a meeting with Strauss because of it.
Hotch had been sitting in his office looking over a case report, waiting to hear _y/n_’s chipper, “Hey guys,” down in the bullpen. He knew once he heard that he’d have just enough time to grab a coffee, wave to the team, and then make it to Strauss’s office. But it seemed to be taking longer than usual. Concerned, Aaron looked at his watch and was startled when he realized it was already 7:55 a.m. Aaron had to run to the elevator and just barely made it to the meeting on time. After the hour with Strauss, he had found JJ and asked, “Where’s _y/l/n_?” A tinge of concern laced his voice. The media liaison had replied, “She caught a bad cold last night. She just called Emily to let her know that she’s taking the day off with PTO.” Aaron nodded, absorbing the information. He was glad to know that _y/n_ wasn’t in any trouble, or stuck in traffic, but being sick didn’t sound great either. Aaron had spent the rest of that day fiddling around anxiously. Hotch knew it was because of _y/n_ but refused to admit it. Finally, when 5:10 came around, he pulled out his cell and called _y/n_. She’d picked up on the third ring and sounded terrible as she said, “Hey, Hotch. What is it?” Aaron let out a breath and said, “Sorry to disturb you, _y/n_. I just wanted to see how you were doing?” There was a muffled cough on the line, and Aaron cringed as _y/n_ hoarsely replied, “I’m still feeling pretty bad, but the fever is down at least. Hopefully, I’ll be back in a day or two.” Hotch nodded and replied a little too quickly, “Take all the time you need, _y/n_. When you feel better, come back.” There was an awkward pause because Aaron didn’t know what else to say, and _y/n_ hadn’t expected to hear such genuine concern coming from her normally very composed superior. At least not over a little cold. Eventually, _y/n_ who was feeling sleepy again said, “Thanks for checking on me, Hotch. I’ll be alright, just need some sleep.” Again, Aaron nodded. He replied, “Okay. Rest well, _y/n_. See you in a few days.” After that, he hung up and put his head in his hands in desperation. He knew he shouldn’t be having the feelings he was for _y/n_ It was inappropriate. His inner voice reminded him, “She’s sick goddamn it. She probably doesn’t want you around right now.” Aaron did justify his line of thinking slightly because he was just picturing making her some tea to smooth her throat and tucking the blankets around her more tightly. It’s not like he was having sex with her… though he’d had those thoughts before too. In his waking mind, he could stop those images with ease, but in his dreams when he made love to her, it was always overpowering. A time or two, he’d even waken mid-dream to find his body aroused and tense. On these occasions, he’d had to go to the bathroom and find release below a steaming shower. The guilt of doing this weighed on him heavily. One of the times he had done this was during a case, and he hadn’t been able to look at _y/n_ most of the day without flushing and internally reprimanding his body and mind like a teenager. But a majority of Aaron’s thoughts about _y/n_ centered around mundane things like waking up beside her, or cooking dinner together. Aaron knew he was boring, and led a boring life, but if it was possible, he’d like to lead it with _y/n_ beside him. Aaron sighed as the elevator reached his team’s floor. He wished he didn’t sound so melancholic, so lovesick. It wasn’t like him. But _y/n_ pulled the emotions from him like the moon pulled the tides. If nothing else, Aaron had learned something valuable tonight; as Rossi had said, _y/n_ wouldn’t wait for him forever, and they both deserved to know how the other felt about the other.
The bullpen was mostly dark with a few lamps on some desks still on, plus the lamps in Aaron’s office burned down on the rest of the space with their soft halogen glow. Hotch didn’t want to seem like a creep, but he wondered where _y/n_ had wandered off to, or if she had just left without telling him. The latter sounded unlikely. Hotch moved to her desk and noticed that _y/n_’s chair was pulled out with her bulky coat draped over the back, and her sneakers and socks sitting underneath the desk. This indicated to Aaron that _y/n_ was still around. Aaron leaned against the desk, much like Morgan did every day when _y/n_ got into the office. Hotch flushed at the idea of _y/n_ sitting in the empty chair. Being so close and causal like Derek or Garcia were with her. Hotch rarely found himself jealous of Morgan for many reasons, but in this case, he was. He couldn’t afford to be too casual with anyone on the team, especially not with _y/n_. If he was, he knew he’d fall head over heels for her. It was hard enough thinking and dreaming about her. He didn’t need more fuel for that fire. Thinking about this sparked a memory from earlier in the year, and suddenly, Aaron had a sense of where _y/n_ was. It had been after a long day in October. The time change had meant that it was dark outside before anyone left the office. The whole team was still around filling out some reports, except _y/n_ seemed to be missing. Hotch approached Emily and asked, “Where’s _y/n_?” Prenitess chuckled at his question and said, “Licking her wounds up on the roof. Freddy Hareld from Finance just made a big deal about “Just how keen _y/n_ looked. And how she must just be dying to get to know the city better now that she’s part of the BAU, and wouldn’t she let him show her around on Sunday.” Hotch’s eyes grew wide at the story. He was rarely privy to office gossip, even though he knew stuff like this happened around him all the time. However, his co-workers kept him out of the loop, which he didn’t mind until now. Aaron cleared his throat and asked, “Did she seem alright?” He wasn’t one to notice or judge men much, he knew he wasn’t perfect either, but Freddy didn’t seem like _y/n_’s type. Hotch was surprised the man had mustered up the courage to ask. Emily nodded and said, “She just looked annoyed. Apparently, Fred talked, loudly, for about five minutes before she had to shut him down and tell him that she wasn’t interested.” Even though Aaron trusted Prentiss, he wanted to make sure that _y/n_ was okay for himself. Office drama could be uncomfortable. Hotch had spent a good bit of time on the roof himself when he was new to the team. It seemed to be one of the only places in the building where you wouldn’t be disturbed, but now that Aaron had his own office, he didn’t need to find an escape from the team or his own thoughts anymore Much like the first time he had found _y/n_ on the roof seeking an escape, _y/n_ was leaning against the railing, looking out onto the canopy of trees that surrounded the Quantico office and the highway beyond them. Hotch cleared his throat, as he stepped closer to _y/n_. She turned around and felt a blush paint across her face when she saw it was him.
_y/n_ had just been thinking about him, and there he was. _y/n_ had been considering how they had both been dancing around the other's feelings all year. And two things _y/n_ knew for sure, she wasn’t great at dancing, and her feet were fucking tired. _y/n_ had hoped that there would be a way for her to tell him how she felt without it being awkward or jeopardizing her job. She hoped that she’d at least shown Aaron her care with her actions if not her words. Unfortunately, the few times that had seemed perfect had been cut off by Haley and Jack. The first time had happened in June. A terrorist group was planning on poisoning the largest high school in the region. It had all been a test run for a bigger operation that would take place in D.C. The team had caught on the terrorist’s trail first. But not before Hotch had been taken and tortured for information. The few seconds of audio that Aaron’s captors had shared were so sickening to _y/n_ that she crumpled in on herself and almost vomited. She couldn’t hide how much hearing Hotch in pain was hurting her. When the cell had been caught, the other half of the team moved to Aaron’s location. _y/n_ had shot and then subdued three men before she, Rossi, and Spencer found Hotch black and blue and tied to a chair. He was barely conscious with his mouth gagged. The wad of cloth in his mouth was soaked with sweat and blood that had dripped down the side of Aaron’s face from a large gash on his eyebrow. _y/n_ helped free his mouth while Spencer cut off the zip ties around his battered arms and legs. Rossi was on the phone with the paramedics who were already en route. Once Aaron’s limbs had been freed, he slumped heavily into _y/n_, who supported his weight. She and Spencer helped him to the ground, and he groaned in pain at being shifted. _y/n_ quickly took off her outer jacket and covered his waist. His kidnappers had stripped him of everything but his briefs, and _y/n_ was certain he didn’t want to be so exposed. The paramedics came shortly after and took Aaron to the nearest hospital._y/n_ was grateful that she didn’t have much time to see or think about all the cuts and burns littering Hotch’s prone form. Seeing him like this felt so wrong that it twisted her insides.
Later, when the doctor had methodically detailed Aaron’s injuries, _y/n_ burned with a fit of anger even _y/n_ didn’t know that she possessed. When he was cleared for it, the team had all gone and saw Aaron in his room. He was surrounded and attached to multiple medical devices keeping him medicated and stable. Even though everyone appreciated Aaron and what he had gone through, no one particularly wanted to stay with him long after wishing him a good night’s rest. No one except _y/n._. Aaron knew it was his fault. He hated hospitals. He would gripe and groan and generally be in a foul mood until he was released as quickly as possible, so he was surprised in his pain-induced state to see _y/n_ pull up a chair close to his bed and just plant herself there. Aaron shifted on the bed to look at her better. That was a bad idea as a sharp pain moved up his side. Hotch muttered, “Fuck” under his breath. He moved his left hand which was attached to an IV toward his stomach to apply some pressure where the pain was radiating from. _y/n_ watched as Aaron moved around. He was straining the line of his IV, and _y/n_ jumped up softly saying, “Hey, hey. Take it easy there Hotch. Just stay calm if you can.” Aaron grunted, but acquiesced as _y/n_ took his left arm and rested it back by his side. She looked at him, concern etched on her face as she asked, “Where does it hurt, Hotch?” Aaron swallowed and almost said everywhere. But his stomach was especially tender and he said, “My, my stomach, but you don’t have to do anything _y/n_. You don’t need to stay here. I’m a pain in the ass when I’m like this.” _y/n_ nodded in understanding as she gently applied a bit of pressure to where he had been trying to reach earlier. He closed his eyes as _y/n_ gently rubbed circles over the inflamed flesh of his torso. Any words about protocol or regulations left him as soon as _y/n_’s hands met his clothed skin. He let out a breath and _y/n_ asked, “Is this okay? I can get a nurse for you?” Aaron shook his head no. He was sick of being poked at. Having three IVs was already putting him on edge. The possibility of more medical equipment was too much to bear. And whatever _y/n_ was doing was soothing him. Hotch softly said, “No nurse. Please. This is good.” Even saying those words seemed to exhaust him. _y/n_ just nodded and kept gently running her hand over his stomach. She didn’t want to think about how this was probably breaking ten rules, or how Aaron’s body looked under the flimsy hospital gown. She just kept moving her hands and watched as Hotch seemed to still and then finally sleep. When his breathing had evened out, _y/n_ pulled the covers over him again and took her seat once more. She didn’t care if he was in a mood or snapped at her. _y/n_ just didn’t think he should be alone right now. So she was going to sit with him until either he told her to leave or someone in the hospital kicked her out. It was at that moment that all of her disparate feelings for him coalesced into one of love. Not a fling or a passing fancy, but the kind of love that lasts through illness and grief and every other part of life. _y/n_ sighed and thought, “What a time to have a revelation like this,” as she kept watch over her boss, unable to leave his side.
Aaron had shown interest in her too. _y/n_ felt a bit better that she wasn’t the only one falling in love. He was more subtle about it, or at least he was trying to be. But that hadn’t stopped her from noticing how he looked at her, how his gaze lingered just a second too long in meetings. He’d pull his eyes away quickly as if he’d been caught doing something improper. Then there was the time he’d called her when she was sick and how he’d seemed a little too excited to have her back after a short four days of illness. And he looked out for her on cases. Not that Aaron didn’t look out for everyone, but he seemed to take her comfort more seriously than he needed to. He held the door for her and let her sit in the passenger seat so they could throw ideas back and forth. At first _y/n_ had thought it was just because she was the newest member of the team. But the behavior from Hotch continued, and just one time on a case, he’d pulled her out of a line of fire and rolled on top of her even though he probably didn’t need to go that far. As Aaron let out a breath of excitement over the case and the woman below him, _y/n_ caught the tells of desire on his face. It didn’t help that they were in what could be an intimate position. His pupils were wide and his breath came in little gasps. _y/n_ didn’t need to see his groin to know that he was excited down there too. After a second, Hotch quickly got up and helped _y/n_ stand too. Aaron nervously straightened his shirt and tie and after quickly asking _y/n_ if she was okay, and her response of “yes,” he moved away from her to gather some semblance of composure. The fact that Aaron was flushed and couldn’t look at her for the rest of the day told _y/n_ all she needed to know about Hotch’s thoughts about her. Or at least the uncontrollable whims of his strong body.  _y/n_ didn’t let herself get carried away. Aaron was still her boss, and she was his agent. And because of this neither had said anything or acted like they were falling in love with the other because it didn’t feel like it could happen. Not to them. But now as _y/n_ sat by his hospital bed, she wondered what it would be like with Aaron. To peek behind his well-kept facade and just be close to him. _y/n_ assumed this was the nearest she’d ever come to that, so she settled in for a long night and decided if this was all she was getting, then she would accept it. Fate had never been so kind to give her something as lovely as Aaron, Hotchner, and she accepted it.
It was a long night. Hotch woke almost every hour in pain or needing to adjust for his comfort. _y/n_ moved his pillows and blankets for him, helped him drink a glass of water, and called a nurse when he needed to relieve himself. The next morning she was tired, but when Aaron woke, he seemed much improved. He softly said, “_y/n_, thanks for last night. For being here. You made being here, comfortable for me.” _y/n_ took his hand softly and rubbed over his knuckles with her thumb. Gently she said, “It was nothing, Aaron. I’m just glad you’re okay.” _y/n_ was so tired that she was about to speak transparently and say, “I’d do this all the time if you needed me to. I don’t mind staying up all night with you whether you’re sick or not.” That was the closest thing to a confession that _y/n_ could think of. But she had been interrupted when a nurse knocked on the door and said, “Mr. Hotchner, your son, and Ms. Brooks are here to see you. Should I let them in?” Hearing this, _y/n_ dropped his hand and her head a tiny bit. She stood and said, “I’ll give ya’ll some space, Hotch.” Aaron nodded yes to the nurse, and watched as _y/n_ left the room. He felt like he’d just missed something big,  but didn’t know what. _y/n_ passed Haley and Jack in the hall. _y/n_ gave the pair a small smile and nod, and she made her way to the hospital lounge to get some much-needed coffee. The Hotchner-Brooks divorce was still very new, and _y/n_ wondered where things had fallen apart between the two of them. She also wondered if there was any chance at all for her and Aaro.  It didn’t feel like it at the moment.
_y/n_ snapped back to the present when Aaron said her name more loudly. He was holding out his suit jacket for her and saying, “You look a little cold.” Hotch was right, she was cold. _y/n_ had wished she’d brought her coat up to the roof almost as soon as she had stepped outside. However, she was too lazy to want to go back in. She’d escaped Freddy’s boring conversation and looked at Aaron right before she moved to the roof for some fresh air. _y/n_ was pondering if she should just give up her dreams about Hotch. Neither of them seemed to be making any moves out of fear that they might say no to the other or that they might ruin the strong friendship they had now. _y/n_ was getting tired of it though. But then there was Aaron as always being a gentleman and looking out for her. _y/n_ nodded and Aaron slipped behind her, placing the jacket over her shoulders. His hands brushed over her exposed skin, and _y/n_ felt that familiar spark burn through her anytime she felt Aaron’s hands on her. Those times were few and far between. She looked over at Aaron and decided that tonight she was going to give him a line and see if he took it. If she didn’t seem interested, she’d let her infatuation go and move on. She could be happy not loving Aaron. At least she hoped she could. Hotch moved to her side next to the railing and he asked, “Was Fred trying to ask you out again?” _y/n_ flushed because it was so rare for him to ask her about her personal life. She remembered the first time it had happened she’d nearly dropped her _y/f/c/b_. That first time had been Freddy-related too. That time they both seemed embarrassed to be talking about it. Now _y/n_ was much more comfortable being open with Aaron. She looked at him and replied, “No. Not this time thankfully. I think the third time actually did it. No today he was just asking about the cases the team has been on recently, and then, inexplicably, he started talking about his pet lizard.” Hearing this, Aaron couldn’t help but cringe. _y/n_ chuckled and said, “You know he’s not a bad guy, just not the guy for me. But bless him, he needs to learn to read a room.” Aaron hummed and said, “Well I’m glad he’s ended his crusade.” _y/n_ laughed at his commentary and replied, “You know he’s right about one thing. I still don’t know this city at all. The cases keep me tired enough to not want to explore on my days off. What do you say we skip the party and you show me something worth seeing?” And here was _y/n_’s line. All Aaron had to do was give it a tug. Hotch looked at her with some surprise, like he had when he was half-dazed in the hospital bed. He cleared his throat and said, “Are you sure it’s me you want? Garcia, or even JJ could show you a better time. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind…” _y/n_ could sense that he was deflecting, and said, “No. I want you. You’ve lived here longer and you’ve gotta know the places that aren’t tourist traps. Plus, Garcia is flirting up a storm with that tech down there and JJ only has eyes for Will. I wouldn’t dare break up either of those conversations right now.” After a pause, _y/n_ added, “Come on Hotch. You looked miserable in there. You’re honestly telling me that you want to go back?”
Aaron let out a warm laugh and said, “Alright, I wasn’t particularly enjoying myself. Too much small talk makes me feel like a dog that’s been bred for show. And I never understood why they held this thing after Christmas and between New Year's. That time feels sacred in some unspeakable way.” _y/n_ was grinning and said, “Totally. I know the director said there was some sort of conflict, but that just read like bad code for, ‘Let me take my ski vacation with my family first.’ And don’t mention the playlist in there. Nobody was enjoying that, I swear to god.” Hotch had to stifle a harsh laugh to not sound unbecoming. That was another thing about _y/n_, they synced with each other’s humor. Sometimes he had to look away from her in meetings to avoid bursting out laughing. The fact was a joy and a pain in equal measure. Aaron looked over to her again, and he realized that she was still waiting for an answer. He took a breath to steel himself. Aaron left like it was now or never, and he didn’t want to let _y/n_ go. Not after all they’d been through this year. He did, however, need a moment to think about where exactly to take _y/n_. He hadn’t exactly been on the town himself since the divorce. Hotch slowly said, “I’d be happy to show you around, _y/n_, but would you give me a minute to think about where exactly to take you? I’m, um, particular about places.” _y/n_ nodded and relaxed into the railing. Aaron looked her over again. She looked ravishing in that dress, and it didn’t hurt that she had his jacket on too. He rested his hands on the cool metal and looked out onto the highway. Gently he asked, “What do you think about when you come up here? I used to spend a good deal of time up here too. When I was new to the BAU at least.” _y/n_ looked over him. Pondering the question. Trying to picture him as a green agent under Gideon. Trying to imagine him in his early thirties instead of his late forties. That all felt like a different time. She hadn’t been there then. _y/n_ moved her gaze to the highway and said, “Well most of my time up here is spent far less productively than yours was. I’m sure. In fact, three of the seven times on this roof have been an escape from Freddy. The other four times, I’m sure I was just annoyed, at myself or someone else. It’s a good place to cool off. Shake the cares of the day away.”
Aaron rolled his eyes. Most of his time up here had been spent sitting against the wall and questioning his life choices, but he didn’t verbalize that thought. He didn’t need to as  _y/n_ continued, “But sometimes I like to close my eyes and pretend I can see D.C. from the rooftop. The capital or Washinton Mall. I know it’s silly, and I’ve explored that city even less than this one, but that’s why we’re here, aren’t we? To keep people safe. To keep the dream alive for everyone who doesn’t have to see the dark underbelly of this country. It gives me comfort.” Hearing this, Hotch stepped forward and placed a hand on _y/n_’s shoulder. He wasn’t sure why. He replied, “I don’t think that’s silly at all, _y/n_.” Something _y/l/n_ had said had sparked an idea in Hotch. There was a place on the border between D.C. and Virginia that he’d liked a long time ago. Politicians from either side of the aisle would meet there to make deals and broker favors. As a younger man, he had thought it was cool. Aaron looked at _y/n_ and said, “How do you feel about jazz?” _y/n_ nodded yes and said, “I don’t mind it. Improvisation is good for the soul. Gets you out there. Is there dancing?” Aaron tried to remember the intimate club and eventually nodded yes, saying, “I think so. But I wouldn’t trust me with that. I’ve got two left feet.” _y/n_’s laughter cut through the cold night and she said, “It’s alright. Me too most of the time.” Aaron shifted his hand to her lower back as he asked, “This place is too far to walk. Did you drive here?” _y/n_ replied, “No. Em took me. I was planning on taking an Uber back when I was done with my private roof party.” Aaron noticed her eyes slowly blowing out and her breath coming in faster in her chest. Aaron nodded and said, “Okay. Well, we’ll take my car if you're comfortable with it. I can drop you off at your place after?” _y/n_ agreed and said, “Sounds like a plan.”
The pair made a quick stop by Aaron’s office and _y/n_’s desk to grab their things before heading out. Neither made any formal goodbye at the party. Hotch felt oddly free as he stepped out of the field office with _y/n_ by his side. On the drive to the jazz club, he pointed out different areas of the town to _y/n_. He knew he sounded like a dad, but _y/n_ seemed interested in learning more about the area and asked follow-up questions as they cruised down the dark streets. There was no parking in front of the club, so Aaron found some down the road. The club was unassumingly nestled into the facade of a street full of high-end stores. Now it was _y/n_’s turn to point out interesting trends in the window and designers she despised. Aaron got a small tirade about _y/l/f/d_ when they passed that storefront. _y/n_ was sure Hotch had lost interest at that point, but when she looked at him, he seemed engrossed. He looked over at her and said, “Well, I’d have never known that unless you’d told me. Now I’ll have something smart to say when there’s more small talk to be made at parties.” _y/n_ smiled at Aaron. She knew she had her eccentricities, but he took them with such grace and she wondered what she’d done to earn even an hour of this man's time.  _y/n_ spared him any other commentary. When they stepped into the small, dark space of the club, Aaron told the matre de that it was just two, and the man led the two toward the back of the space. The head waiter graciously motioned to a small couch near the live band playing soft jazz in the back corner of the room. Aaron let _y/n_ take a seat first, and he followed after her. Shortly after being seated a waiter came and took their orders. Aaron got an old-fashioned, and _y/n_ ordered _y/f/d_. As they waited for their drinks to arrive, _y/n_ asked Aaron, “So, how did you find this place?” Hotch did his best to summarize his first year in the BAU. How unsure he was about the shift in jobs. How Haley had been the one to get him out of the house and office. As Aaron recounted his story, _y/n_ didn’t pull away or, cringe at the mention of the former Mrs. Hotcher. _y/n_ realized as much as anyone how important Haley was to Aaron. He’d loved her for a long time before things had fallen apart. And she’d loved him too. _y/n_ was far less insecure about this fact now. She was ashamed about how she’d felt about Haley at the hospital that one time. Not only was Haley important, but _y/n_ realized that Jack was the zenith of Aaron’s life. And she respected that. Fatherhood seemed far from easy, and add being head of the BAU on top of that? Hell, Aaron made it look easy. So she listened to him open up in a way that he never had in front of her before, and _y/n_ got her small peak behind his work facade. She realized that he was just a man doing his best. Trying to juggle all of the plates at his feet, and somehow that was the most attractive thing possible about Aaron Hotchner that she hadn’t ever noticed before that instant.
Hotch looked at _y/n_ after his long-winded story and expected to see boredom there. Or disappointment at how often he’d brought up Haley or Jack. But he didn’t find it. Only a look of admiration that he couldn’t quite place. And suddenly Hotch wanted to say everything that he’d bottled up over the year and wanted to lean down and kiss _y/n_ on the lips like he had in his dreams. And _y/n_ watched as Aaron shifted in his demeanor. How his eyes were wide again and he seemed to be building to something new. Something yet said or explored between them. The sudden and insistent beeping of Hotch’s phone cut off that moment in an instant. Aaron pulled back from _y/n_ a bit and murmured, “Sorry,” as he accepted the call. After a second, Hotch’s mood changed again, as he replied to the other end of the line. “Is he alright? What’s the matter?” _y/n_ pulled back a bit more, realizing this was a private conversation and she was a bit too close to Aaron for it to be happening like one. His frown and worry lines increased, as he listened to the dialog she couldn’t hear. After a minute he replied, “Yes, I’ll head over right away. You said the doctor was on his way too?... Yeah, yeah. I’ll just be twenty minutes or so… Okay. Tell Jack I’m on my way… Yeah. Bye.” Aaron dropped his hand with this cell in it and looked at _y/n_ with sad eyes. She looked back and him and said, “Is it Jack?” Aaron nodded and replied, “Haley said he has a bad fever, and it’s getting worse. She called a doctor and she thinks I should come over. _y/n_, I’m sorry.” _y/n_ gave him a pat on the arm and said, “Go be with your son, Aaron. There are more important things than me in the world. At least in your world.” Hotch nodded with the same sad eyes. He realized how much of a sacrifice _y/n_ was making for him, how life in the BAU was a whole big load of sacrifice. Aaron stood, and just to show a fraction of how grateful he was for _y/n_’s presence in his life, he leaned down and kissed her forehead. It was chaste, and he pulled away before he could get ahead of himself.
Aaron was gone before _y/n_ could even fully register what had happened. The bell at the door told of Hotch’s departure, and _y/n_ could have screamed out of desire or despair at how the night had come to a quick conclusion. But she didn’t. _y/n_ knew how important Jack was to Hotch. Everything else but his son was at the periphery of Aaron’s life, and Jack was at the center. As _y/n_ settled back into the loveseat, now alone, she contemplated how yet again any plans or revelations of their feelings had been dashed. But _y/n wasn’t mad about it. _y/n_ had to remind herself that for the half hour, they had been together that night, Aaron had allowed her to see more of himself. And he was, as _y/n_ expected, as good a man as they came. _y/n_ thought, “How often does a girl really get to see a good man?” It was a pleasure, even if it was for just an evening.
The final few days of December passed in a wave of the hand. _y/n_ had asked Aaron if Jack was alright the morning after their night on the town, and he’d said that the fever had broken in the night and that his son was on the mend. Aaron had asked _y/n_ in the same text exchange if she’d gotten home okay after his sudden departure. She had told him that she’d called a Lyft soon after he’d left to get home. And then, before _y/n_ knew it, she was packing her bags for a long weekend at one of Derek’s properties on a lake outside the city limits. She was carpooling with Emily and Garcia. _y/n_ had heard that Morgan’s New Year’s Eve parties were times to remember and she was finally going to experience one for herself. _y/n_ was already excited to be spending time with her friends, but when Emily said, “You know Aaron’s coming too? He apparently called Morgan last minute and asked if there was still an empty bed, _y/n_’s jaw dropped. _y/n_ quickly composed herself and said, “Well the more the merrier.” Em rolled her eyes and said, “The more the merrier my ass, _y/n_. You know he’s just going there for you. When are you going to catch on that he’s in love with you?” Penelope agreed from the backstreet and said, “Honestly. _y/n_. He’s been making googly eyes at you all year. And what was that with him taking you out after the Holiday Party? Do you see Hotchy doing that with anyone else?” _y/n_ sighed exasperated with her friend's encouragement. She half-heartedly said, “Well, he could have been.” this had Garcia and Prentiss cackling and Penelope said, “This is the time, _y/n_. I swear. If it’s not, I’ll pull Hotch aside myself and give him a piece of my mind.” Despite _y/n_’s friends banter, _y/n_ felt reluctant. None of the other times seemed to work out, and she didn’t see how this was going to be any different.
As Morgan’s lake house came into view, _y/n_ tried to let everything go. Whatever happened would happen, and she planned on having fun no matter how the next day and a half went. The trio of women were the second to last to arrive. Spencer joined them a half-hour later. Derek quickly showed everyone to their rooms. It felt like an adult sleepover and an energy charged the air. For the first hour or so the team just relaxed and unpacked. Derek, Rossi, Spencer, and Aaron sat on the leather couches and talked about the year. Their highs and lows. They also debated which case was the most interesting from the year. As the men talked, Emily, _y/n_, JJ, and Garcia all tried on the dresses they had brought for the end of the night. As they were helping with the zippers and hemlines, _y/n_ said, “I’m sorry Will couldn’t come tonight, J.” JJ smiled and said, “Yeah. But I think it’s fine. We’ll be married soon enough and we’ll have the rest of our lives to be together. Tonight feels like the gang is back together in a nostalgic sort of way. You know what I mean?” The other nodded alone and Emily said, “I feel ‘ya JJ. What a year it’s been. But we’re all happy for you know. I think you got the last good guy on the market with Will.” JJ grinned and helped _y/n_ slip into her ‘dress.” The media liaison seemed to glow with a pre-marriage, I’ve-found-the-love-of-my-life aura even four months before her wedding day. And suddenly all the women were dressed, and they all looked at each other and complimented each other. Emily was in a sleek purple pants suit. JJ was in a fitted black dress. Garcia, as always, was wearing a bright orange tulle skirt with a pink top, plus white fingerless gloves. The tech noted, “And I’ve got about ten million little things to put in my hair too!” Lastly, _y/n_ was wearing something far slinkier than her friends. It essentially amounted to a lot of large, shimmery _y/f/v_ sequins held together with tiny metal rings. _y/n_ hadn’t worn it since before turning twenty and she couldn’t remember why she’d bought it. “Maybe for a rave?” She thought. Because the garment was so sheer, she was wearing sensible black underwear and a matching bra underneath, but _y/n_ flushed at the one time she’d gone clubbing without the undergarments beneath. That had been a fun evening.
The compliments made the rounds, and Garcia told _y/n_, “You look drop-dead good in that, _y/n_. The boys won’t know what hit them.” At the mention of “the boys,” _y/n_ looked at the ground and said, “You know I would have picked a different outfit if I’d known Hotch was coming.” The others snickered, and _y/n_ laughed too, saying, “I’m being serious. I’m not trying to look like a slut in front of him. The brief said ‘Fun New Year's attire and this is the funniest, New Years-ist dress I’ve got.” Emily moved forward and gave _y/n_’s shoulder a pat saying, “You’ll be fine, _y/n_. You look glorious. Plus you’re the youngest one here. That means you can get away with wearing something more risque. I’m just shocked you can wear something from that long ago. I’m lucky if I could pull off something from two years ago and it look good, I can’t even think about five or ten.” Prentiss shuddered at the thought, and that got a good laugh out of all of them.
A knock at the closed door, had them all look away from each other. It was Derek saying that he, Aaron, and Rossi were going to take a walk along the path that went around the lake nearby. And if any of them wanted to join them? _y/n_and Em jumped at the chance. The pair quickly changed back into their casual clothes and headed out with the guys. The walk was pleasant and they all just took in the fresh air and saw the trees surrounding the water. Aaron was walking a few steps behind _y/n_ and he contemplated his feelings about her once more. Even he was getting annoyed with himself. He blamed it on being indecisive in the worst possible area of his life, partnership. But he’d decided today was going to be the day. He was going to bite the bullet and ask _y/n_ how he felt about her. Even though he couldn’t picture the words leaving his mouth, he swore to himself that it was going to happen. The walk concluded, and then everyone got some drinks which Aaron happily and skillfully mixed. Then Derek and Rossi made dinner and everyone ate outside around the fire. And by that time it was already ten and the first fireworks were dotting the sky. Aaron and _y/n_ were sitting next to each other. Close enough that he could move his arm just an inch and he would be touching hers. Hotch’s eyes stayed on the sky as he asked, “Do you have any plans for the New Year?” It was too cliched to ask about resolutions, but he did wonder what someone like _y/n_ thought about the future. _y/n_ turned her gaze to him, and replied, “I don’t know. I want my apartment to feel more homey. It’s still giving college vibes if I’m being honest. I’d like to buy some better furniture, like the opposite of the stuff from IKEA. And then there’s helping JJ with the wedding, and then just going out more. Seeing the city like we did after the party.” _y/n_ felt like saying, “I’d like doing that with you,” and also, “Does this make me sound boring?” But _y/n_ couldn’t vocalize either of those thoughts as Gacia stepped out onto the patio and proclaimed, “It’s dress-up time, baby girl!” _y/n_ shook her head and chuckled. Aaron gave her a hand up and watched as she disappeared into the house. _y/n_’s list sounded just up his alley, and he wondered why he’d been putting off his feelings for so long. Why he couldn’t just man up and tell her he loved her? That he was mad about _y/n_. Aaron sighed and walked inside after _y/n_.
It was 11:15 when the girls were all dolled up with their outfits, heels, and makeup. Derek had the TV playing with the countdown to the ball drop on as ambient noise. The champagne was ready to be popped, and the new year was rung in with friends and laughter. Garcia and Derek were both oddly big about watching the ball drop. _y/n_ had interrogated Penelope about this on the way up to Morgan’s house. Garcia had just said, “It’s tradition, and you don’t mess with tradition.” Just as the group of women stepped into the light to be seen for the first time, the power went out. There was a moment of silence and then Derek said, “Really house. You do this to me now?’ That got everyone laughing, and Aaron asked, “Where’s the breaker Morgan? I’ll give it a look.” Derek told him and Hotch stood outside for a second. While Aaron was gone, Penelope and Morgan talked about what they would do about a countdown. Nobody wanted to just look at the clock. That, Morgan had said, “Wasn’t festive at all.” Aaron came back and said, “It’s not good news, the main fuse is fried.” That had Derek thinking and he announced, “Alright, change of plans. There’s a dive bar down the road. If we book it, we can make it there before midnight.” There was little complaint from the group as Morgan and Penelope hustled everyone into two cars and down the street. There was so much excitement that nobody got to see the women’s outfits until they were standing outside the bar. The space was a dive and it was packed with partiers. The walkway up wasn’t paved, so Aaron took _y/n_’s hand with his left, and even though he didn’t need to, he placed his right on her lower back. Again he felt that spark shoot through him. The cool sequins juxtaposed to _y/n_’s warm skin were doing things to him that he didn’t want to think about right now. Or maybe it was the dress that didn’t leave much to the imagination. Either of those was a good option. Inside, the team found a spot to stand and watch as the time ticked down from 11:55 to midnight. Derek joked and said, “Alright, who’s kissing who when it’s time?” Emily raised a hand and teasingly said, “I volunteer for you, Morgan.” The team laughed and then started counting down. Everyone except Hotch, who was standing a bit farther back. _y/n_ sighed, knowing he was never a big fan of crowds. She stepped close to him. Even as Aaron sought a moment of reprieve, both _y/n_ still had to stand almost body to body to avoid bumping into anyone. As “THREE, TWO, ONE” were unanimously chanted in the tight space, _y/n_ was going to try and pick up where their conversation had stopped earlier in the night. To see if Aaron had any plans going into the New Year. But she didn’t get the chance to as the call of “Happy New Year!” Hotch bent down and pressed his lips to hers.
Aaron had meant for it to be a little peck. Just something to ring in the new year with. But _y/n_ only stood in shock for a moment before she realized what was happening, and she’d waited so god damn long for this very moment that she quickly leaned into it, pressing her body to Aaron’s as her arms wrapped around him. Aaron reciprocated in kind and placed one of his hands on her hip and the other on the crown of _y/n_’s head. Holding them together like he might fall apart if he let her go. Aaron's lips were slightly chapped and his cologne, which _y/n_ knew well, crept over her like a sunray. As soon, as they’d started, they didn’t want to stop. Then it dawned on both of them, like they hadn’t been yearning for the other for over a year, that they didn’t have to stop. So they didn’t. Not until they had to pull away panting for air. And once they’d gotten breath back in them, they came together again. This time it was more cautious.  More subdued as Aaron began to memorize the shape of _y/n_’s soft mouth pressed against his own, _y/n_ made a small contented sound that only he could hear and smiled as she placed her hands on his chest. _y/n_ his body in a way that indicated an intimacy that had always been there between them. The rest of the team watched them with Garcia saying, “About time. My god, I thought I was going to have to lock them in a closet together later tonight.” Rossi joked and said, “Well, there’s still time to do that later,” as he came back with a handful of champagne flutes. Dave handed one to each member of the team and then walked a pace over to _y/n_ and Aaron. Hotch was looking into _y/n_’s eyes but stopped when he noticed his friend. Rossi smiled and said, “Alright you kids. How about you take a moment and join us for a toast?” _y/n_ flushed, but nodded taking a glass from Rossi. Aaron chuckled and got a glass himself. He never let his hand lose contact with _y/n_’s side as all three walked back to the table. Rossi gave Aaron a strong pat on the shoulder as they moved to the group and winked at _y/n_, which only made her flush further. Hotch didn’t even care as the whole team's little “oohs and ahhs” sounded at their return. Aaron realized that scrutiny or affection didn’t feel so bad with _y/n_’s hand in his. He realized with full clarity that she’d been there all along, and he’d just not moved his hand to meet hers. He’d tell her he was sorry for that later. For stringing her on so long. He’d tell her he loved her more times than he could count too. But for now, as everyone lifted their glasses saying “Happy New Year!” The future never looked brighter.

“So…” Duke drawled, sounding suspiciously wide-awake for the day shift kid at two-thirty in the morning. “If I said Damian and I are in a bit of trouble, on a scale of Jason to Cass, how likely are you to kill us?”
Clearing his throat and rubbing his eyes to try to wake himself up, Tim grimaced. “What the fuck did you do?”
“Nothing.”

The Charm of Northern Exposure, Summed Up in 10 Episodes
Tumblr media
Plucking out individual best episodes of Northern Exposure is like ranking individual cups pulled from the same expertly spiked punch. It’s not impossible to do, it just feels not in the spirit of the gift you’ve been given or the eccentrically twinkling host who’s presented it to you.
Of course, Northern Exposure, the tale of petulant young New York Jewish doctor Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) sent against his will to the beyond-tiny town of Cicely, Alaska as payment for his med school debts, has its odd sour draught or two during its six-seasons.
Tumblr media
Quirk can turn twee with just a single wrong step. From the start, the series, created by St. Elsewhere vets Joshua Brand and John Falsey (with executive production help by future Sopranos don David Chase) presented unsuspecting CBS viewers with a much headier and more ambitious formula than its fish-out-of-water premise suggested. That degree of difficulty, which only increased in each of the series’s six seasons, meant taking big creative swings.
The town of Cicely was quickly established as a haven for eccentrics of all stripes, from frostbitten locals with colorful backwoods backstories to transplants in various stages of flight; from old lives too fraught or too comfortably suburban for their liking, to the region’s Native population, whose culture and individuality were allowed far more complexity than on any American TV show at the time.
Tumblr media
Installed in a crumbling storefront office with a largely monosyllabic Native receptionist named Marilyn Whirlwind (stealth series MVP Elaine Miles), the constantly kvetching Joel immediately began sparring with Maggie O’Connell (Janine Turner), the equally combative bush pilot (and Joel’s unimpressed landlord) in the sort of will-they/won’t-they relationship that, like Joel’s predicament, gradually receded in favor of fleshing out the series’s roster of singular figures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Roaring over the town was Barry Corbin’s barrel-chested Maurice Minnifield, a former Oklahoma astronaut, millionaire, and bona fide American man’s man drawn to the untamed tundra as blank slate for his singular vision of an “Alaskan Riviera” hewn in his own stubborn image. Greeting the irascible Joel were everyone from a legendary sexagenarian animal trapper turned (mostly) pacifist barkeep, Holling Vincoeur (John Cullum) and his spacey but worldly 18-year-old former beauty pageant girlfriend Shelley (Cynthia Geary); aged and resolutely sensible town shopkeep, postmistress, and all-purpose town official Ruth-Anne (Peg Phillips); philosophizing ex-con turned all-day radio DJ Chris (John Corbett); and perpetually amiable half-Indian teen and aspiring filmmaker Ed Chigliak (Darren E. Burrows).

As the series progressed, Joel’s predicament persisted (he’d essentially been dragooned into Cicely by Maurice over his expected post in an Anchorage hospital) but sank back into ensemble status, with each character in turn bobbing up to take the show’s delightfully unpredictable center stage. (Whether due to his diminished role or contract disputes, Morrow chafed in his first series lead, eventually leaving partway through the sixth and final season.)
New oddballs emerged to fill out Cicely’s ranks: Adam Arkin’s mysteriously obnoxious master chef/mountain man Adam and his heiress hypochondriac wife Eve (Valerie Mahaffey), Anthony Edward’s bubble-bound lawyer Mike Monroe, fled to Alaska ahead of encroaching environmental allergies, Graham Greene’s Native medicine man and artist Leonard, Richard Cummings’ Bernard, revealed as Chris’ long lost Black half brother, and sharing the pair’s preternatural psychic bond.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Throughout it all, Falsey and Brand steered Northern Exposure according to their own set of wide-open, anything goes constellations. Dream sequences, strange local traditions and superstitions (Maggie’s old lovers have all died in unusual circumstances), singular personal obsessions and quests — anything could happen in Cicely. And, with astounding reliability, the results were as warm, weird, and welcoming as the people of Cicely themselves.
With the series at long last available to stream (all six seasons are on Prime Video), we’ve put together a list of 10 favorite episodes drawn from Northern Exposure’s heady brew of comedy, drama, and enduring whimsy, in broadcast order. Drink up.
"Aurora Borealis: A Fairy Tale for Big People" (Season 1, Episode 8)
By the time this first season finale aired, it was already crystal clear that Cicely didn’t need any outside help in the strangeness department. That doesn’t stop a massive full moon and the appearance of the shimmering-with-portent northern lights from putting a double-whammy on the town’s inhabitants. Some can’t sleep, others are drawn on mysterious walkabouts, and a confused, citified accountant from Portland shows up on a brand new Harley and immediately latches onto Chris’ barroom talk of the collective unconscious, with the mismatched pair gradually realizing that they share the same absent father.Northern Exposure tosses a lot into each episode’s hearty stew, and this was one of the first episodes to find the perfect balance of soulfulness, incident, and knockabout comedy.
"The Big Kiss" (Season 2, Episode 2)
Darren E. Burrows (son of perennial B-movie bad guy Billy Drago) is Cicely’s most endearing figure as Ed Chigliak, a patiently unassuming and guileless presence whose clouded backstory as a half-Native, half-white foundling the would-be Scorsese accepts from his tribal elders with typical resignation. At least until a 256-year-old Native spirit guide named One Who Waits (legendary character actor Floyd Red Crow Westerman) appears to no one but him and tells Ed he might just have a bead on the identities of Ed’s parents.
It’s to Northern Exposure’s credit that we can accept the reality of the delightfully deadpan One Who Waits, or not. But Ed’s ultimately fruitless journey is as resonant either way, his rapport with the old ghost registering in Burrows’ performance with aching sincerity and sweetness. One Who Waits would return in Season 4, and Westerman is always a gift, but that episode’s more concrete conclusion to Ed’s story pales next to the lovely ambiguity of his roadside encounter with a friendly older Native man in “The Big Kiss.”
"War and Peace" (Season 2, Episode 6)
While Northern Exposure would stretch its woozy reality in all manner of ways throughout its run, it never did so as straightforwardly or delightfully than in this tale of a famed Russian singer Nikolai Ivanovich Appollanov (Elya Baskin) whose intermittent appearances in Cicely are greeted with delight by everyone — except the Cold War patriotic Maurice. Challenged to renew their one-sided chess rivalry, perennial loser Maurice accuses the gentlemanly Russian of cheating, leading to a duel where the series’s typical spell of whimsical benevolence seems headed for inevitable, bloody disaster. Meanwhile, Ed’s first love with a randy preacher’s daughter sees the heartstruck teen turning to ladies man Chris for some Cyrano-style flowery prose, with similarly doomed results.
That both stories turn out unexpectedly more or less okay is a relief, although Ed’s heartbroken confrontation with the contrite and more worldly Chris is about as emotionally rough as Ed gets. The series decided not to spoil things, a decision that was as cheeky as it was refreshingly necessary to a viewing public mired in coverage of another needless overseas war.
"A-Hunting We Will Go" (Season 3, Episode 8)
Northern Exposure’s ostensible lead was one the series’ least successful elements, oddly. Joel’s incessant complaining about his plight might have been understandable, but Morrow struggled with the show’s often inconsistent treatment of the New Yorker’s wavering integration into Cicely’s mix. (The number of times Joel’s episode-ending epiphanies plop him right back into crabapple first position for the next are too numerous to list.) Still, when the show gets the ultra-rational Joel right, it really gets him right, as in this outing where the city boy feels duty-bound to test out his visceral revulsion against the locals’ offhand love of hunting.
Joel goes on the offensive about the “barbaric” bloodsport, only to accept Maggie’s challenge that, without experiencing the phenomenon himself, he’s just blowing hot air. Joining veteran hunters Holling and Chris on a grouse hunt brings Joel unexpected (and long-winded) elation—and then a huge comedown when he comes across the wounded bird he’d only managed to wing. Themes permeate the best Northern Exposure episodes in the slyest of ways. As Joel desperately tries to heal his victim, Ed becomes similarly protective of Ruth-Anne upon learning of her recent 75th birthday. IN the end, both men resign themselves to death’s looming and necessary presence in their own way, with Joel confiding to Maggie how death and killing are two very different things and Ed’s surprise gift to Ruth-Anne seeing the two literally dancing on her grave.
"Burning Down the House" (Season 3, Episode 14)
Opposing forces meet more often than Cicely’s benign exterior suggests, with this third-season installment proving that a community packed with dreamers will occasionally spit out some darker fancies.
When Chris builds a catapult in order to “fling” a live cow in order to create what he terms a “perfect moment,” only Joel objects, the rest of Cicely regarding the stunt with idle curiosity. (After all, as Marilyn states, they’re going to eat the cow.) Throughout the series, this undercurrent of eccentricity edging into rustic anarchy runs through Cicely—it’s like they’re one rough winter away from stuffing Joel into a wicker man. Here, the unfortunate cow is only saved via an artistic quandary, not a moral one, as Ed accidentally reveals how the whole cow-flinging concept has been done in one particular movie. Chris adjusts to a less-lethal concept, with the resulting fling filling the assembled townsfolk (and viewers) with suitably collective awe.
“Three Amigos” (Season 3, Episode 16)
The bond between former astronaut and American hero Maurice Minnifield and legendary game hunter Holling Vincoeur gets the rough and tumble outdoor adventure tale it deserves in this episode where the two old friends and romantic rivals strike out into the wilderness to fulfill the last wish of an old friend. Pros Barry Corbin and John Cullum had career-best roles on Northern Exposure, and they’re never better than here, as the two aging tough guys brave impossible weather and their own aging bodies to bury wild Bill Haney, their longtime drinking, hunting, and brawling buddy at the legendarily treacherous No-Name Point.
Portrayed often as two distinct but similar examples of a dying breed of masculinity, both men ultimately have to concede that dying for your word might not be all it's cracked up to be, especially for two old men with warm beds and, in Holling’s case, Shelly to return to. Willie Nelson on the soundtrack singing “Hands on the Wheel” over scenes the boys’ game attempts to honor an old promise signals an elegiac farewell to an old way of life.
"Cicely" (Season 3, Episode 23)
With its season order expanded after two short first go-rounds, Season 3 gave Northern Exposure even more territory to explore stylistically. A flashback episode might not sound groundbreaking, but this tale of the founding of Cicely reframes everything we thought we knew about Alaska’s most eccentric town, all while lending unexpected insight into its denizens, all of whom pop up in different roles in the reminiscences of a 108-year-old man (veteran actor Roberts Blossom) who Joel accidentally hits with his pickup.
Brought to Joel’s cabin for treatment, the old man spins a yarn about the town’s eventual founders, a pair of lesbian free-thinkers named Jo and Cicely (Jo Anderson and Yvonne Suhor) who fled polite Montana society to create a matriarchal utopia right in the dangerously lawless heart of untamed Alaska. The story of the rough-and-tumble Jo and the delicate Cicely plays out with the tragic heroism of two such forward-thinking (gay, female) dreamers. The town is turned around and only a stray bullet (and some “kill your gays” TV tradition) prevents a completely happy ending. Still, as Joel drops the old man at the graveyard where he’s come to honor Cicely’s 100th birthday, Cicely, Alaska comes that much further into focus.
"Thanksgiving" (Season 4, Episode 8)
The Native population of Northern Exposure is an integral part of the show’s melting pot of oddballs, but this eventful episode adds a needed dose of spice surrounding the outwardly ordinary Indian citizens’ existence in a colonized America. Walking to work, Joel is ambushed with a tomato hurled by the friendly Ed, introducing the yearly tradition by which Cicely’s native population takes out centuries of otherwise sublimated anger and resentment in a symbolically messy assault on the town’s white people.
While the rest of Cicely’s white folks uncomplainingly accept this once a year pelting, Joel complains to Marilyn that his status as a perpetually oppressed Jew should exempt him from the Native’s wrath. It’s when he sinks into an even more miserable than usual depression upon being informed that his intended four-year sentence as Cicely’s general practitioner has been (thanks to inflation) upped another year that Marilyn finally recognizes Joel’s kinship with the town’s Natives.
Listening to the bereft and unshaven doctor’s fetal position lament about his complete and utter lack of hope, Marilyn tells Joel he can now march in the Native’s day of the dead parade. “You’re not white anymore,” coming from the no-bullshit Marilyn, lands with unexpected force on Joel, and us. The people of Cicely, in their insularity, are free to process generations of racial and personal trauma in their own unique manner, and as the whole town, Indian and white, gathers at The Brick for a sumptuous post-parade Thanksgiving feast, Joel is free to complain to the face-painted Ed about his own misfortune in strangely liberating kinship.
"Mister Sandman" (Season 5, Episode 12)
The northern lights are back and everyone’s having each other’s dreams. What sounds like a high-concept lark turns typically thought-provoking and stubbornly resonant, as Maggie jumps into Holling’s revelatory dreams about his horrible, abusive father, Joel sleepwalks into Ruth-Anne’s store with a little boy’s thwarted dreams about bottomless candy, and Maurice becomes incensed when one of a pair of gay B&B proprietors (Doug Ballard’s Ron) discovers Maurice’s secret dreams involving women’s shoes.
There’s plenty to unpack, as with most dreams, and there are laughs aplenty around the margins. But it’s in the townsfolk’s variously grudging willingness to accept that their unpredictable home has yet another metaphysical trick up its sleeve that “Mister Sandman” achieves surprising depth. Holling has long decried his French-Canadian lineage’s legacy of awful behavior, here evincing a revulsion to food tied both to Shelly’s pregnancy and his repressed memories of his mother and father. And Maurice, whose bluff, all-purpose bigotry is never quite offset by his old school macho act, gets into a truly ugly poker table confrontation with Ron and his partner Erick (Don R. McManus) stemming from what he considers these “deviants’” insight into his private thoughts. It’s up to the sage Ruth-Anne to have some frank talk with Maurice about his bigotry, and Joel to overcome his usual skepticism when he sees that Maggie’s recounting of her dream actually assists in treating the despondent Holling.
"The Quest" (Season 6, Episode 15)
Rob Morrow’s desire to leave Northern Exposure (he’d already filmed Robert Redford’s Quiz Show during Season 5) is given a typically strange payoff in his final season fantasy/dream/who-knows final outing. After Joel and Maggie’s on-and-off romance sputtered one too many times, the perpetually disgruntled Joel had left Cicely some episodes earlier, going AWOL on his debts and setting himself up as the GP of an even more upriver Native village. Unexpectedly arriving in the middle of the night at Maggie’s house, the shaggy and wild-eyed doctor unfurls an ancient trapper’s map, claiming to have uncovered the location of the mythical lost city of Kiwa’ani and asking for Maggie to fly him the first leg of his trip to find this magical “jeweled city.”
As far as goodbyes to disgruntled stars go, “The Quest” is a confoundingly thorny metaphysical flight of fancy. With the skeptical Maggie in tow, the obsessed Joel first encounters one of those elderly Japanese soldiers still fighting WWII (and is repaid for his ensuing medical treatment with a bounty of sushi), almost gets sidetracked in an impossible, dreamlike spa in the middle of the Alaskan nowhere, and finally coming across an incongruously locked chain-link bridge fence and the abusive gatekeeper (who looks suspiciously identical to Adam) demanding the answer to an impossible riddle. Joel answers and spies the glittering skyline of his beloved Manhattan in the mists—and he walks into it, and out of Northern Exposure forever.
Is the episode something of a make-the-best-of-it exercise? Maybe. But it’s a great one, perfectly in keeping with the series’ spirit. As Marilyn sense Joel’s departure with a signature, unreadable “Good bye” back in Cicely and Maggie receives a days-later postcard of the Staten Island ferry from Joel reading “New York is a state of mind,” “The Quest” stretches Northern Exposure’s woozy reality to its breaking point while still slotting comfortably—and touchingly — into the show’s world in as satisfying a way as could be hoped.

Human!Beru & Min Byung-gyu headcanons!
based on @jdah 's post on the part where Beru called Byung-gyu "father" and since the idea is too cute and makes a lot of sense, I made a post about it, otherwise I'd feel like I committed a crime if I don't hehe :3
It was sundown and Byung-gyu was heading home from work when he suddenly heard some crying nearby. His eyes landed upon a cardboard box next to a dumpster where an infant was inside. He immediately rushed toward it and opened the box wider to get a glimpse of the baby — however, he looked rather thin, but that didn't stop Byung-gyu from looking around to check for his mother and as the infant continued to cry, he picked it up and made his way to his apartment.
Byung-gyu had never raised a baby before. Sure, he had been around children before, but infant was a whole different thing.
With the help of credible sources in the internet, Byung-gyu managed to get through fine with the child. He brought the baby along when buying formulas, milk, and other necessities a baby needed. He spent all night feeding the infant and since the next day would be Saturday, Byung-gyu dedicated the entire weekend for the child. He even brought him to the hospital to check his health.
Did this mean that Byung-gyu had adopted the baby without further thought? Yes. Did he become a father out of the blue? Yes.
One time, Eun-seok paid a visit and saw a bunch of things that wasn't supposed to be in his best friend's home. He decided to look around and once he reached a bedroom, he saw Byung-gyu feeding an infant in his arms with a bottle of milk. Of course, he went: "WHAT THE FU—"
"Quiet! The baby is trying to sleep!" was Byung-gyu's instant response. But once realization dawned in, he met Eun-seok's widened eyes.
After setting the infant into the crib, Byung-gyu told Eun-seok everything. "Are you sure you are even ready to raise a child on your own?" "Yeah." "What about his mother?" "She hasn't shown up since then, but it's not like I'm gonna leave him [the baby] alone."
Eun-seok eventually claimed himself to be the baby's godfather.
Then, Eun-seok asked Byung-gyu if he had an idea for a name. Byung-gyu, who had completely forgotten about it, was silent and pondered about it for the rest of the day. Until one night, while he was reading "Empire Of The Ants" with the baby, who was wide awake, on his lap. Then, the baby started babbling and reaching his little hands out to the book, slamming on it whilst Byung-gyu stared at the child in confusion.
A few moments later, a light bulb lit up in his mind. Byung-gyu closed the book and stared at the author's name: Bernard Werber. So, with the baby gabbling, Byung-gyu realized he found something to name his adopted child!
At first, he thought of naming him Bernard, but since it didn't seem to right, Byung-gyu went for "Beru". He placed the book aside and held the baby on a standing position on his lap to face him and said: "Beru?" The baby giggled. Byung-gyu tried again. "Beru." The baby did the same response. It put a wide smile on Byung-gyu's face and stood up to toss the baby in the air and pulled him to his chest, laughing wholeheartedly.
The next time Eun-seok visited, with toys for his godson, Byung-gyu showed the baby to him and went, "meet Min Beru!"
Eun-seok looked at him as if he had gone crazy. "Are you kidding? Jin-woo literally named the stray cats on his neighborhood cat #1, cat #2, cat #3, and so forth!"
"But he likes it though," Byung-gyu frowned. He turned to his child and spoke in a baby-ish tone. "Isn't that right, Beru?"
Beru laughed and clapped his hands. Eun-seok sighed and decided to accept it since the baby basically approved of his name.
As years passed, Beru grew up with black spikey hair like Byung-gyu, yet his was longer and had pale skin due to his skinny physique and had red eyes.
When going to work, Byung-gyu would leave Beru to a nice old lady next door to take care of him. Beru would always frown deeply, so Byung-gyu made up for it by promising him that they would watch TV together with his favorite food.
Parents would watch cartoons with their children, but Byung-gyu and Beru would watch historical dramas together.
Beru preferred history above anything else, mostly because his father was a history teacher and he liked learning from him.
Byung-gyu introduced Beru to the rest of his friends. Hee-jin and Hae-in both adored Beru very much and sometimes, they could get too clingy that Beru had to run back to his dad; Beru was very comfortable around Ju-hee, who was a nurse at the same hospital Byung-gyu used to work at before changing careers. She was sweet and very tender around him, and whenever he got injured and his dad was nowhere to be found, Ju-hee was the one who healed him and gave him a lollipop in return.
Besides Eun-seok, whom Beru had known the longest, there was also Tae-gyu — who was the one behind Beru's first swear word and the person Byung-gyu almost killed because of it, Dong-wook — Byung-gyu's co-worker who watched over Beru whenever he was at the school, Jong-in — Beru's rich uncle, Yoon-ho — the uncle Beru liked to have "wrestling matches" with, and Jin-woo — who turned out to be Beru's favorite uncle and wanted to be just like him once he grew up.
Eventually, Beru got to meet Su-ho, who was Jin-woo and Hae-in's son, and Mi-ho, who was Yoon-ho's daughter from an unknown woman. The three of them were close, with Beru and Mi-ho getting along because of their chaotic personalities, and Beru with Su-ho because of their shared love for fantasy monsters.
Despite all of the loving people in his life, Beru would always return to Byung-gyu, who was his father through and through. He also read essays to help his dad and suggested what Byung-gyu should grade those papers.
And despite being a malicious child, Beru was a genius at heart. He also learned several medical procedures Byung-gyu, as well as the knowledge in history.
Beru likes ants a lot, particularly the black ones. Whenever he saw an ant even in the streets, he'd point at it and say "dada, look! It's my pet!" (Eun-seok started judging Byung-gyu's parenting skills at this.)
It was all fun and games until Byung-gyu got called by his son's kindergarten teacher about Beru's choice of favorite pet.
Like Su-ho, Beru also liked drawing ants and used them to create something more such as monsters that they always bonded over.
Beru loved the meals Byung-gyu cooked for him, especially the pork stew with seaweed.
Byung-gyu gave Beru a customed black ant plushie for his birthday. Beru never let go of that plushie ever since.
Beru tried to copy his dad in every way he could — from trying to comb his hair that same way Byung-gyu did, pairing his shirts with random hoodies to match Byung-gyu's casual style, his father's grin, and other mannerisms. Byung-gyu found it extremely cute!
Byung-gyu had an album dedicated to his son since the day he found him and the album basically held 80% of his phone's storage.
Christmas was their favorite holiday. Beru would make handcrafted gifts for Byung-gyu and Byung-gyu would buy his son's favorite things, specifically ant plushies and history books.
Beru liked sitting on top of his dad's shoulders.
They were the father-son duo who would laugh at each other's jokes. Byung-gyu called Beru as his "little me!" around his friends and co-workers.
Beru was clingy and would sometimes latch on his father's leg even while walking.
Like Su-ho who was always needy for his mother's attention, Beru was always needy for his dada's attention.
"Dada!" "Yes?" "Nothing! 😁"
Fairy tales? Nah Byung-gyu read history to Beru in his bedtime!
Byung-gyu and Beru cried together when watching kdramas or simply historical dramas.
Beru would get into fights with bullies and needless to say, Byung-gyu was that one parent who frequently went to the principal. One time, he met Jin-woo, who was also called because of Su-ho.
Byung-gyu couldn't stay mad at Beru, of course. Beru looked way too cute regardless, especially when he had that pouty face and had tears in his eyes.
"Dad, I'm sor—" "yes, I forgive you, my son!"
Every time Beru had a nightmare, he'd head straight to his father's bed and Byung-gyu would instinctively pull his child close even without opening his eyes. And when the morning came, Beru was found plopped on top of his father's face.

Bernard knows he’s muttering to himself the kind of monologue that would be annoying to watch in a movie, something incoherent with a lot of nos mixed in, something that wouldn’t be at all helpful if he actually had to communicate with Tim, but he doesn’t have to communicate with Tim, and that’s the problem. He could say whatever he wanted to right now, and Tim wouldn’t give a single fuck. He could confess his love, or break up, or tell him about fucking up the oven, or say his neighbors are spying on him, or claim Wendy wasn’t even that good of a show. He could he tell Tim he knew he was Robin and it wouldn’t make a difference.
Like, of course he knows Tim is Robin. He has to, in order to be having this breakdown with his boyfriend’s body limp in his arms, covered in blood. Bernard can’t find the source of the blood. And if he doesn’t know where it’s coming from, how is he going to be able to stop it?
He shouldn’t. He shouldn’t be doing this himself, not when the hospital is so close, and so – and so what? He can dress Tim in his own clothes, peel the costume away and say he found him like this, a mugging, the kind of thing that happens when someone steps out for fresh air at three in the morning in Gotham. They’d believe him. And what is he supposed to do, stitch Tim up right here? He has a normal first aid kit, he has over the counter painkillers. But he has Tim’s clothes, and he’s used to undressing and redressing unconscious people, that’s a skill he has.
But there are scars all over, scars that stood out at first, and then made sense, and then he didn’t even notice them unless he was looking, but he’s looking now, because what is a hospital going to say about that? But the doctors must know, right, because he’s been there before, he’s gotten – fuck, he got shot and they had to do surgery and now he’s going in again? They’re going to ask about his injuries, and about his scars, and about his history, and about Bernard, and who knows whether Tim wants all that?
He wishes he’d brought this up before. Bernard could take Tim… who knows where. Bruce must know where. Several of his kids are vigilantes, and it’s not like he could be totally uninvolved in that side of Tim’s life. Or, with Bernard’s luck, he is, and he’d be fucked either way. He thinks there was a doctor. There must be one, with all the shit they go through. He didn’t think to get the name, though, not before Tim came stumbling into his apartment, passing out cold in the fucking Robin suit, and Tim doesn’t know what to fucking do.
Tim’s phone is in his hand, and the weight is familiar, the scuff marks along the side, but the screen doesn’t show anything he’s used to, icons changed and names… fuck, these are all vigilantes. There’s no ICE number like there is on Tim’s phone when it’s not in whatever this mode is, but Bernard’s seen it, he remembers. It’s Dick’s number, because he always says he thinks they wouldn’t call Bruce Wayne, no matter how dire it was.
And Dick is Nightwing, he thinks. Pretty sure. Pretty sure because the timing works out, if you look at the timeline a little too hard, the way it doesn’t for any of the rest of them. Dick is either Nightwing or Red Hood, and it’s hard to tell because they’re the same size and they do the same kind of flip that Dick does when he’s showing off, but Bernard’s pretty sure he’s Nightwing because Nightwing’s been around longer. More attached to Gotham, probably.
He wishes he could wake Tim up and ask.
Instead he hits the logo and sets the phone on speaker, and at least that much of the shape of it is familiar, at least whatever system it’s operating on now is designed to be convenient to someone who was already using Wayne Tech. WayneTech. Of course. That’s how Bruce fits into all of this, and Bernard wishes he could disable the superhero mode somehow, because of course there’d have to be a way to do it, to put it back, but it probably requires Tim’s voiceprint or his eyes, and his eyes are too dilated and one is filling with blood and it’s not going to work for a scan even if Bernard could pry them open.
Bruce’s number might be on here, but it isn’t anywhere he can find, and he wishes it were, because he would be willing to call Bruce the way the hospital wouldn’t, because he knows Tim and he believes him, even when he says he isn’t Robin. He isn’t Robin when he’s with Bernard, he lets himself be Tim, so it isn’t even totally a lie. Nightwing is on speaker and Bernard is peeling off Tim’s suit and everything is covered in blood, even the new clean clothes he pulled out of his drawers and he can’t see because he’s starting to cry.
“Robin?” Nightwing says, again, for what might be the second time or the hundredth, but he’s clearly starting to get worried, and he should be, because Robin isn’t even here to answer, only Bernard, and fat lot of good that does.
“Tim’s hurt,” Bernard says, and thinks maybe he should’ve said Robin, or maybe he should’ve explained, or maybe he should say who he is, but he can’t get more than a few words out and even they sound choked, thick and full of spit and he has to clear his throat before he can say, “I’ve got him changed, but you can drive me to the hospital faster than the ambulance will get here.”
He’s guessing. Probably it’s true, because Dick has speeding tickets out the wazoo and he’s sort of known, in the tabloids, for loving reckless driving and showing off his far too expensive cars. The ones he crashes frequently, purportedly, even though Bernard notices more and more he's never seen pictures of the cars, only the injuries. So if he’s close enough, he can drive here, and then – Bernard doesn’t know what, then. All he knows is that he’s got to get Tim dressed before Dick gets here to pick him up, and then there’s a knock at the door.
He’s going to get up to get it. He plans to, at least, but by the time Bernard is standing, soaked through the entire leg in blood, both legs, both sleeves – the door is open and he has some distant memory of metal scrabbling, like Dick had a key, except Dick didn’t have a key, but he’s in here now, and worried, and carrying Tim like he weighs absolutely nothing, hurrying out to the car without even asking Bernard along.
Bernard follows. He follows quickly, because he needs to be there, and he slips into the back seat where Dick is laying out the bloody Robin, and Bernard takes Tim’s head in his lap and just holds him. They don’t talk. It’s a normal car and Dick’s in normal clothes, and it’s possible he wasn’t even patrolling at all because Nightwing patrols more at dusk than in the middle of the night, but he doesn’t even ask how Bernard knows, or what Bernard knows, or anything that might keep him from hyperventilating, which he is, which he does until Tim’s out of his hands and into the doctors’ and then Dick has him by the shoulders and is saying something to him over and over again.
He’s aware, sort of, that Dick picked Tim up, gently, cradling him in both arms, smearing blood over his arms and chest, and brought him inside, and that someone came by with a stretcher before they were even in the door, and that Bernard himself was trailing after them like a lost lamb and then Dick has him by the shoulders and he doesn’t know what he’s saying.
“Breathe, Bernard,” Dick says, again, again and again, “Tim’s fine. He’s going to be fine. They’re going to fix him up and it’s going to be fine.” It sounds like something Dick’s said a lot before. Bernard’s not sure whether to believe it. He’s not sure whether Dick even believes it.
“He’s hurt,” Bernard says, finally. Wails, really. He’s not sure his voice is at a pitch that can still be heard by human ears, and his words are definitely too gummed up to be intelligible, but still Dick pulls him into a hug, and repeats those stupid words he’s been saying all along, that he’s probably going to continue saying forever because he doesn’t know Bernard well enough to know what comforts him, and whatever it is isn’t crying into a shirt the scent of drying blood.
There’s so much blood on both of them. Tim shouldn’t have that much blood. Or he should, but it should still be inside him, where it keeps him whole, and Bernard’s saying this out loud, and Dick keeps shushing him, and for fuck’s sake how can it possibly be helpful that someone he barely even knows has arms around him, saying reassurances he probably says to every rando on the street. Bernard needs to get ahold of himself.
Tim is Robin, and Dick is Nightwing, and Bernard knows that because he called Nightwing and Dick showed up, and now Bernard is, he doesn’t know, some sort of resource. Some sort of support like whatever Oracle is, except Bernard is human and not a robotic alien consciousness, and actual fucking Nightwing is trying to tell him everything is going to be okay. Except it’s not as believable, when he’s not wearing his suit, because everything sounds more true when a superhero says it.
He’s still a superhero. Bernard has to tell himself that, because if Nightwing isn’t here to save Tim, then who’s here to save Tim? If a superhero is here, even if he’s wasting time trying to get Bernard to stop hiccupping, then there’s hope that everything can be fixed, all the terrible things fought off, and Bernard struggling to wash Tim’s blood off his hands in the tiny sink in this little room that he doesn’t even know what it’s for. It’s not a waiting room. There are chairs, but they’re too mismatched and rickety to be there for the patients or everyone waiting on the patients to come home. Someone’s juice box is sitting there, but there’s no one next to it. Dick is wearing scrubs. Bernard is wearing scrubs, too, but he barely remembers changing into them.
He thinks they might be in an employee lounge, some kind of break room, except that doesn’t sound right because it’s so fucking small and claustrophobic, there are no windows anywhere and the lights are too dim. It’s so small that Dick is speaking softly now, trying not to scare him away, patting a raggedy couch that looks like it used to be a better color than that, and Bernard goes to sit next to him. To cry into his shoulder for real, and not just because he’s tearing up from the smell of blood. It’s softer now, warm and dry, and, because they’re sitting, Dick can tuck his chin against the top of Bernard’s head. It feels reflexively, like it’s something he does all the time to other people. To Tim, probably.
Tim’s going to be fine.

"Three days after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Melissa Janssen’s water broke.
"But Janssen, 35, was just 18 weeks pregnant, too early for the baby to have a good chance of survival.
“'I was in absolute shock and just kind of numb,' she said.
"Doctors told Janssen she had two options. First, she could wait and see, although the baby most likely would die and she’d be at increasing risk for sepsis, a dangerous infection.
"Her other option was to terminate the pregnancy. But Janssen lives in Wisconsin, which immediately banned nearly all abortions once Roe was overturned in late June. 'It was just mind-blowing,' she said. 'I just couldn’t believe this was happening and this was me."
"Janssen wanted to terminate; she was already showing symptoms of an infection, including a low-grade fever and tenderness in her belly, and the baby’s heart rate was becoming elevated. But the change in the law meant her OB-GYN, Dr. Jordan Crow, faced a dilemma. In Wisconsin, the only exception allowing for an abortion is when the mother’s life is in danger. Without symptoms of a full-blown infection, legally it was a tough call to make.
“'To be a doctor in that position, then to be in this situation where you’re uncertain, you think, will the hospital let me do this? Will the DA go after me and I end up fined or in jail?' Crow said. 'It’s this feeling of helplessness and utter confusion for everyone involved.'
"Janssen’s case is a living example of the struggle doctors across the country now face. "
I hope people read the whole article. It mentions another case that came up recently, Elizabeth Weller. The main difference in the case? Weller's doctor waited until Elizabeth was infected, presenting symptoms that would clearly indicate abortion was required, while Melissa's doctor decided to press on:
"In Janssen’s case, Crow knew that terminating the pregnancy was the best treatment both medically and ethically, and he wasn’t going to give up easily.
"Crow consulted with two other physicians, who agreed that terminating the pregnancy was the best course. The hospital eventually approved, too. But it still took hours of waiting before Crow could act.
“'I’ll be damned if some law is going to stop me,' he said he remembers telling Janssen. 'I don’t know what the consequences will be, but if it means someday this goes all the way to the Supreme Court in Wisconsin, then so be it.'"
Now, I believe Weller's doctor should have risked the consequences, too. But Crow shouldn't have needed to take the risk. Doctors should never need to worry if doing what they know is best medically will lead to prosecution.
Doctors warned lawmakers these situations would happened. They clearly explained why exceptions were vague. They were ignored. Now, Todd Rokita is still investigating Caitlin Bernard, sending a clear message to doctors to beware. Ken Paxton and the Idaho GOP have come out against life-of-pregnant-person exceptions, sending the message that even the vague exceptions may not be in place for long.
For forced birthers to say it's all someone else's fault is inexcusable and unforgiveable.

Scottish actor Andrew Keir passed away on October 5th 1997 at a hospital in London, aged 71.
Andrew Keir was born in the coal mining town of Shotts in 1926 and as a teenager worked in the pit alongside his father before gaining a spot as an actor in the town’s local theatre company after a regular performers didn’t show up for a performance.
Keir liked his first acting experience so much that he decided to pursue it further by attending the Unity Theatre in Glasgow at the age of 20 before later joining Glasgow’s Citizens’ Theatre.
Keir’s film career started in the early 1950s with character roles in the comedy The Lady Craved Excitement, the mine accident drama The Brave Don’t Cry, and the romantic comedy Scotch on the Rocks. He would continue to land various character roles in both film and television throughout the 1950s before getting larger roles mostly in horror films produced by Hammer Productions during the 1960s.
Andrew Keir’s most notable role was as Professor Bernard Quatermass in Quatermass and the Pit. He would continue to provide solid character performances in film and television throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he frequently played Scotsmen, especially in the latter part of his career, playing Ruthven in the 1971 version of Mary, Queen of Scots, and the Duke of Argyll in Robroy alongside Liam Neeson.

Rewriting "High Card" (Season 1)
Tumblr media
This is the first anime I've rewritten episode for episode--and this is mainly because it's only two short seasons. I actually really enjoyed this series, and it's one of the few original animes I've watched (and a bright side after being heavily disappointed by "Bucchigiri?!"), but since I'm in the business of doing rewrites now, I decided to fix some story issues I found with this show (mainly character-related), though I wanted to wait until finishing season 2 to make sure my criticisms would be alleviated. Since there isn't too much I dislike, there won't be too much to change, though I wrote this mostly for myself. Here's hoping for a 3rd season!
Tumblr media
One Shot--One of the good/bad things about this show is that they pretty much dive right into the action. It's good since it gets your attention, but leaves something to be desired for the story. For this episode, I'd want to give more attention to Finn's time in the orphanage (the whole reason he's a pickpocket, yet his time there is barely covered).
Tumblr media
2. Make a Choice--Mostly the same, but again giving more information on Finn's time at the orphanage, as well as seeing him interact with the people there (especially Lindsey). I'd also alter the ages a bit so they feel closer. In the series, Vijay is 26, Wendy is 21, Chris is 20, and Finn is 17. I'd probably make them all in their early 20s (Vijay being older felt like it took him out of the spotlight, and I felt like it fit Finn better to be older). I'd also alter Chris' personality a bit; in the anime, his charming personality is often framed as disingenuous to hide his selfish nature underneath due to his own trauma. I like the idea that his flirtiness and charismatic attitude isn't false bravado, and that's just who he is, along with being contemplative and serious when the time calls for it. The origins of Fourland are also explained here instead of in episode 6.
Tumblr media
3. Crazy Rich--Leo is also aged up to around the same age as the other High Card youths, with it being stated that he and Vijay are childhood friends (in contrast to the original, where they have a 12 year age gap and Vijay is seen raising him; this is mainly because Vijay gets such little focus and I never understood why he'd be looking after Leo at such a young age). I'd also want a bit more focus on Leo's backstory and his relationship with his father, Owen, and Bernard. I'd also set the scene for Theodore and Ban's relationship as well as hints at Ban's main goal (which the anime waited until the end to address, and it didn't really go anywhere).
Tumblr media
4. Samurai Girl--A bit more of Wendy's past is dived into rather than a short backstory, and 'd make it so that Vijay is the one to disarm Love-P rather than Finn (given that I want other characters to get a chance to shine outside of Chris and Finn). Chris is unavailable to be in the fight at that time because he got an emergency call from Michel, who just wanted to see him, and she tells him that she's being discharged from the hospital soon. Apple also becomes Finn's first friend unrelated to High Card and the orphanage.
Tumblr media
5. Power Game--Sugar catches on a bit quicker to the events of what's going on in the country, as well as being more sly and tactful rather than just headstrong. She also goes on leave after the death of John Doe. We also hear about how Ban's father died and his hints at wanting to get him back at any cost. Vijay, Bernard, and Leo also explain the power of X-hands and how they come at a great cost, explaining how Ban attempted to use it years ago to reverse time to save his father, but Theodore prevented it, and that his aim is to use an X-hand to travel back in time and save him. However, they suspect another goal in mind as well. More info on the royal family is also highlighted, particularly how Noah hired Ban to kill his brothers so he could be king (kinda feel like the show buried the lead with that).
Tumblr media
6. Take Back Five--Vijay gets more of the focus here, being the one to orchestrate the acquisition of the 5 of Diamonds. Apple is there as well, and shows an unusual desire to obtain the card, despite Finn never revealing to him it's nature. I'd like to think Bernard also is present for this, though Leo is mixed about this, feeling mixed about it, not wanting his father to distrust him, but also wanting to make him proud. It's also implied that Finn knew that Chris switched out the 5 of Diamonds dueling the auction, but he believes that Chris turned it in to HC, so he didn't confront him about it.
Tumblr media
7. Love and Fake--It is confirmed that Chris is bisexual--not for fanservice reasons (even though I am a Chris/Finn shipper), but he says in season two after rescuing Finn "I'm into holding men, too," and I feel like it'd come up while he and Finn are conjoined. It's also revealed that Chris had been trying to woo Chelsea for a short while in order to get her card, but while she was catching feelings, she saw through his flirting, since it's robotic as he does it with many women. While conjoined, we see flashbacks of Chris and Finn's lives (particularly about their parents), as well as Chris deciding to be a bit more contemplative about him playing with others' feelings, even if it's for the greater good. The episode plays out mostly the same, save for Chris asking Chelsea out for a date on his next day off (I'm a Chris/Chelsea shipper, as you can see), but to everyone's surprise, Leo has hired her as a member of High Card, using her social media presence to promote the company.
Tumblr media
8. Heat Up--Up to this point, Finn has been making periodic visits to the orphanage and helping Lindsey cover the payments, and brings Chelsea and Wendy (the only members of HC available) as well as Apple to come with him for Lindsey's birthday. Lindsey still turns down his offer to get more money to help keep the orphanage open, and Finn also notes how Lindsey reminds him of someone he used to know, though Lindsey doesn't press him on it, knowing that his past is painful to recall. Chris also doesn't refer to himself as brother to Finn (this would be to maintain the fanservice). Most of the episode plays out the same, though Apple has a breakdown when he thinks Finn died.
Tumblr media
9. By Your Side--Chelsea and Chris visit Finn, revealing that when Chelsea joins two people, she also develops a connection with them, able to read their emotions, and sometimes their thoughts, allowing her to convey to Chris Finn's pain. Most of the episode plays out the same, though the episode ends with Chelsea coming to a realization, and she rushes to find Michel, who's escaped the hospital again, as well as Finn noting that he needs to check on Apple after his mission is over.
Tumblr media
10. To Be Apart--Given that Chris' backstory is already explored prior, the episode focuses more on Ban's motives (before this, we'd just heard it explained rather than see it) and how Theodore's adherence to the rules only became stronger with time. I'd also say that Arya was fired from HC rather than simply leaving, since helping Tyler breaks a significant rule. The other members of HC aren't put on standby, so Vijay and Wendy rescue Chris, and Chris quickly disappears after getting Alex's card. Finn gets a call from Leo, who tells him that Chelsea informed him that Chris is looking for Michel in order to heal her with an X-hand. Finn subsequently passes out from his injuries rather than Chris shooting him.
Tumblr media
11. Chris--Most of the episode's the same, except everyone already knows Chris' motives, and Chelsea manages to find Michel at the carnival just as Chris does. Lindsey returns Chris' money to Finn, but it motivates Finn to work harder to save the orphanage even more, and we get a glimpse of Finn's brother, who up to this point he had forgotten, which pushes him to protect Lindsey, the orphanage, and High Card (Chris included).
Tumblr media
12. Finn--The royal family is still defended by HC, but Finn immediately goes after Chris rather than being knocked out and hospitalized. Tilt stops him, taking from some of season 2 and revealing that he's Finn's brother, and doesn't want to hurt him, but has sympathy for Chris, which is why he joined Ban, who also has something he wants to get back. Chelsea is also never injured and uses her telepathy to distract Chris in order for Finn to shoot one of the cards out of his hands. In the end, Chris is fired from High Card (considering he did something that is completely against the rules), though he still needs money in order to support himself and Michel, and Ban offers him a place with the Klondike family. He doesn't have to do any of the extreme dirty work, but he would have to go against his former friends. Chris agrees for a couple reasons: to support himself and Michel, out of sympathy for Ban, and because he believes High Card will eventually beat the Klondike family.
And that's all my notes for now! Perhaps I'll come back and add more content/revise before season 2. Lemme know what you think!

Hi, Nic! It sucks that you aren't feeling to good right now, do you have any random Sam related thoughts that you feel like sharing? Also! I read your last Bernard 'fic, and it was so cute (sorry, I didn't say that sooner!)
I’ve mainly just been thinking about how much of a great dad Sam would be. How he’d be so involved with the girls and dote on them so much
I think when Joan is about a year old we’d make the arraignment that he takes her to work with him on Tuesdays and Thursdays since the hospital would have a daycare for staff. And it gives me two days off a week to relax for a few hours. Joan loves it a lot because she likes meeting the doctors and nurses and also she gets to see her dad more often. Sam lives to regret it once Joan starts going through her parrot phase and repeats everything she hears him say, especially about co-workers. And when Penny gets older and Joan is in school, we have the same arrangement where he takes Penny to work. It does become a bit troublesome when she’s a toddler because she goes through a boring phase and gets kicked out of the nursery until we can get her biting under control. And Sam still wants to give me those days off so sometimes he’s walking through the hospital with a toddler on his hip
Also also Sam is always shown to be rather stoic while at work, and he occasionally shows a softer side with kids. And I think he’s like that with people he cares about too. So he’s super soft with me and the girls, way more warm and open and smiles a lot more. Anyone who sees him outside of work is so taken aback by his change in demeanor
I could also see when Sam is on the rare night shift (he avoids them as often as possible when the girls are born) and one of the girls has a nightmare, they call him from my phone because they’re scared. And Sam quietly talks to them to calm them down and encourages them to wake me up for cuddles and that I’ll protect them from bad dreams until he gets home
(Thank you! I’m feeling better! And I put my whole heart into that Bernard fic!)

Bernard as a bird boy :) Except he's a talon, lets go--
Okay so after Tim drops out when his life falls apart, on Bernard's side of things, his villain family came for him and his parents. He was basically sold to one direction, except it's the court of owls.
He joins the cult of dionysus because the big owls are like "hey, check this thing out" and he's like "yeah" and he does!
and then they find out that he was friends with Tim before the talonfication, and they're like "Hey, meet up with this guy and tell us everything. we'll fake a home life for you" and he's like "Go on a date with Tim, got it" and they're like "no" and he's like "Hold Tim's hand and listen to everything he says" and they're like "yeah okay fine, pretend to date the boy"
so they go on that date, Bernard is very good at remembering to be a normal human. and then the demon dude shows up, knocks Tim TF out and "kidnaps" Bernard. He goes with them, to find out what they're doing. And then Robin saves him before he can get sacrificed.
He then helps Robin beat up these cult members, careful not to kill despite the fact that it would be so easy. But Robin cannot know what he is, though he knows the secret Tim tries to hide from him.
Despite the talonfication and indoctrination, Bern has been a great boyfriend. Tim runs hot, and Bern is so cold, Tim is always holding onto him when he finds out that it's okay. Tim cancels dates last minute and it totally doesn't hurt Bern's feelings, because he's a talon now and he doesn't have those.
big boy owls notice that their talon boy is acting up. they get him some extra talon classes so he doesn't think that he's a real boy. They're preparing to put him in the talon sleep box, but then he finds out that Tim was shot.
Boy is on a war path. He watches over Tim while he's in the hospital. His little Robin. the Court thinks he will be troublesome should they have to act against Tim, and they discuss decommissioning him.
Anyway, when Tim wakes up, the first thing he sees is the glow of gold eyes, and Tim can't even scream. He doesn't hit the call button, that could be trouble for the nurse staff. The glow approaches, and Tim braces himself, he hopes that Bruce won't blame himself for his death. a cool hand places itself on Tim's forehead. Tim feels safe. He doesn't understand but he feels safe. safe in that distinct way he feels with...
Hooked up to the machines, Tim can barely mouth Bernard's name. Bernard leaves when a nurse comes in, and doctors rush in to take care of Tim.
Bernard is put into the box for his big sleep, Tim can't contact him, and he doesn't know how to tell Bruce.
And Tim can't accept that it might have all been an act. Bernard was different than he remembered, sure, but he was still Bernard, right?. He still had those moments of being a little shit, but sometimes he is just so quiet. He felt safe with Bernard. He was happy with Bernard. He has to find him, and he has to figure out if any of it was real.

Hi everyone, Peahen mom here with another drabble. This is part 2 from the first one. If you wish to read it, it's right here. If you wanna see where this goes just go ahead and read the first one. Now onto the drabble.
||Drabble Summary||
Today was the annual demon fraction check-up day where Ophelia and the healers check up their fractions together. However, she has a guest helping out to show it was the scary Akiko Yosano! Hearing this, everyone was now hiding from her and her 'new helpers' to heal everyone. Will they get away from the mad healer or be caught? Read to find out.
||Warning||
~This is half funny/scary type of drabble
~crying/freaking out is present in drabble
~scared demons are present in this with a crazy happy doctor
~quick death and revival will happen during this drabble
((Guests in this drabble))
Yuuka Nakano, Ashley Butterfly, Rex oxford mills, Willow, and Jinx along with their fractions belong to me.
Van ink, Kali, Joshua, Fin, Ethan, Guam along with their fractions are in this. They belong to @demon-blood-youths
((Just a heads up: Grammar is not good and their will be heavy mistakes but this was written for fun so please enjoy. ))
In the main hall of the hospital, the fractions of NYC were running away trying to get out of this place and away from the crazy doctor that was going to do their check up. However, they get to the front doors and tries to open them but saw they wouldn't budge.
"Uhhh guys? We can leave now. Please open the door!" Fosh said to Ethan and Rex who was trying to open the door but it wouldn't budge.
"We would like to do that Fosh but the doors are bolted shut! We can't get out!" Rex said as the fractions was shocked.
"What do you mean bolted shut!?" Kali said. "Here, let me do it!" she goes to start trying to cut the door down but she saw small sparks to signal no luck. The doors were made of a strong material that not even her weapons can cut through.
"The fuck?!"
"How about the windows! We can get out from there right?" Navarro said seeing T-bone going to try opening one but it wouldn't budge.
"No! Their bolted shut too!" he said now everyone was really confused but the DBT knew. Akiko and Ophelia planned this! This was just to insure no one could escape till they got their check up.
"How in the world did everything get bolted down! We thought everything was open when showing up here!" Bernard shouted now trying to open the door with Fin's help but no luck.
"They were but someone must have bolted everything so we don't get out."
"What do we do, what do we do, oh what are we gonna do!?!?" Yuu said panicking that Oblivon was trying to calm her down even if she was terrified deep down herself.
"Look! Can you guys just please explain what is happening here! Why are you guys so scared of this doctor! Is she that bad?" Light asked wit ha sweatdrop but the DBT said nothing not wanting to remember and Yuu now crying hugging Oblivion who still was trying to calm her down.
"...Lets just say....it was hard to sleep for the last few nights after we were..ahem, healed." Hellmare said in a silent tone that even got the others nervous. She never speaks that quiet before and she's always a calm collected person.
"..I..I'm scared to ask but..just what is s.so scary about her?" Ashley asked.
"...You all really wanna know?" Shdwkyz saw everyone listening that he sighed. "Well, she.....she has the ability or gift called Thou shall not die. It allows her to heal any injury with no problem. Most say it's a very rare gift." He started to say.
"T...that's rare?" Ashley asked seeing him nod.
"Yes. With this, she can heal all kinds of physical external injuries or any kind for herself and others with the one condition.."
"And that is?" Ahmed asked with arms crossed.
"That they must have near fatal injuries. Therefore, in order for her ability to be used, the target must be injured enough to be half-dead."he said seeing everyone look nervous.
"Hold up, back it up a second. You mean in order for this gift to work we have to be half dead? Or to say in short if we were not.." Fin started to say but now everyone looked pale.
"She would have to injure us to use it." Maggie said now everyone was worried.
"That's insane though! Theirs no way!" Guam said.
"But it's true! We went through it! Why else do you think we freaked out!?" Fosh cries seeing everyone quiet. That was not true right?! Sure, they went through a lot back in Yokohoma but that was a bit much.
"...No way, that can't be true. I mean, I understand you guys do things where we noticed but theirs no way that's true." Kali said but before they could answer, the DBT Tense up to look behind the others.
"..What?" Kali asked to turn seeing Ophelia happy to see them.
"So that's where you guys were. Come on now, do we have to do this again?" she asked.
"L..Listen Ophelia, I know Dr. Akiko helped and taught you many things..and who knows what you taught the others but can't we skip this check up? Please...I don't think we are mentally ready for this again!" Navarro said but saw her shaking her head.
"You guys know I can't do that. You all have to be checked on..so please don't make this hard on yourselves. So if you would just come with me." she said smiling.
"T..t..then what about the younger members? Would you let them go through this too!" Breezy asked but Ophelia smiled.
"No. They were already checked and were excused."
"WHAT!?!?"
"THAT'S NOT FAIR!!" Navarro shouted.
"So, Gerald, Timmy, Ping, Taz, and Alex are excused and can wait in the small break room down the hall." she said as the younger teens were nervous. "But if you wish. You can help me with getting everyone." she said.
"Uhhhhh.."
"Oh no, not again! Guys don't listen to her!" Fosh said seeing the younger members quiet.
"If you do, I'll be sure your rewarded.." she smiled seeing them look but thinks.
"Hmmmmm......Okay!"
"Oh come on!!!!"
"Then can I Help with-"
"Nope. Sorry Shdwkyz, you helped the last time so I'm afraid your getting your check up this time." Ophelia saw the snake tense up twitching a little but he really didn't want to go through that again.
"Ha! Serves you right!" Navarro said to Shdwkyz who glares.
"Oh shut up.." he hissed.
"This is not happening again! Not again!" Fosh cries while Mouse tries to calm him down.
"Well, again, shall we begin or...are you guys going to make this hard again?" Ophelia said as the fractions were nervous now.
"Ummmm...do we get a say in this?" Zed asked.
"Hmm let me think.......No." Ophelia said before seeing Hex, Swan, and Jeremy show up ready to catch them but the fractions quickly runs away.
"RUN AWAY! SCATTER JUST GET AWAY FROM THEM!"
Everyone was running away but in some luck, Hex trips two that saw it was T-bone and Maggie!
"Huh?! Hey, let go Hex!" He said struggling.
"NOT AGAIN!! I DON'T WANT TO GET LEFT BEHIND AGAIN! GUYS!!!" she shouted.
"SORRY MAGGIE AND T-BONE!!" Navarro shouted as the others ran off. However the fractions ran off to see them gone leaving the two.
"Oh you have got to be fucking kidding me!? AGAIN!! DAMN IT NAVARRO!!"
"Wait, he left you alone before!?" He asked.
"It's a long story. I'll tell you later." she grumbles but the two saw Ophelia walk over to look at the two but Maggie and T-bone sweatdrop to gulp. Her glasses were hiding her eyes while she looks to them with that same cold smile.
"Well, that's two down and a few more to go. Gerald, can you please take the two to Dr. Akiko for their check up?" she asked seeing him nod as he goes to pick them up and begins carrying them away.
"NOOOOOOOO!!!! GERALD DON'T DO THIS AGAIN PLEASE!! I DON'T WANT TO GO TO HER NOOOOOOOOO!! T-T"
"COME ON LITTLE DUDE! THAT'S NOT RIGHT! LET US GO!"
"Sorry guys but at least you'll be healed!" her said hearing T-bone and Maggie screaming even worse as they got taken away. Opheila sighed but looks to Swan and Jeremy. "lets go...we still have a few to catch..You young ones please come with us." she said seeing Ping, Taz, Timmy, and Alex nod and follow her.
