What if the Dark Urge was a companion?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love all the companions in Baldur's Gate 3 HOWEVER, I would've loved to see Dark Urge as a companion! Imagine the sweet angst and spicey scenes!!!!
What happens to him if you choose Tav over his origin makes me sad. So, I'm making this a thing!
Next: Chapter 2

I feel sorry for Orin
repurposed from an old Reddit post of mine
Raised from birth in the Bhaal cult and has never known ANYTHING else. Literally the result of incest between her mom and Sarevok (her father AND grandfather) - and for her entire life is actively manipulated and groomed to worship her "Grandfather" second only to Bhaal (leaving a disgusting implication that Sarevok might eventually try again). Literally every single day of her life spent in a murder cult, never knowing anything else.
Her mother is actively manipulated when Orin is seven to try to kill her daughter, only for Orin to reflexively kill her first, at which point Orin was briefly possessed by Bhaal himself (per some Sarevok dialogue). AT AGE SEVEN. And even from a young age, Orin's true gift is her artistry, a talent that outside the Bhaal cult probably could have been nurtured into something phenominal, but inside the cult is twisted into a sinisterness in the kill that, when she's out of earshot is decried as wasteful.
She eventually rises through the ranks (never have had any choice), having never felt a meaningful moment of compassion or kindness and, desperate to be cared about, sees the power and fear and respect her bloodkin (The Dark Urge) has gained and uses their hubris to take them out.
Ironically, in the timeline where Durge lives, they get a gift Orin couldn't even dream of - a 2nd chance. With their brain scrambled and the tadpole present but being interfered with, the Dark Urge got a chance to be someone new. (Whether they accept or reject that 2nd chance, they at least got a choice this time).
What did Orin get for her troubles? Her (grand)father openly coveted to either take her out, or worse, take her out - when the time was right, her own allies both detested her (Gortash openly revels at the idea of working with the Dark Urge again)
and most brutally, if you manage to confront her with the truth, any of it? About Sarevok, about her mother, etc? She immediately believes you. And for one (1) moment, maybe there's hope for her.
Hope that Bhaal immediately rips away; an Orin confronted with the truth and showing even the slightest hesitation is immediately forcibly transformed into the Slayer by Bhaal himself, with a strong implication that the core of the old Orin is gone forever win, lose, or draw. "No more doubts, no more fears, no more Orin. Become murder.". Seeing what Bhaal's reaction was the moment Orin had one (1) instant of hesitation also confirms that she'd likely have never had the chance to choose differently, either Bhaal would always step in or else she'd eventually meet her end.
Imagine the AU where Orin takes her CLEAR flair and artistic talent to become a truly great artist. Where she gets the same second chance that Durge got - If she'd been able to use her talent for impersonation and desire to great to do something powerful instead of being forced by her family from childhood into the family business of murder.
She literally never had a chance. Even Bane and Myrkul and their respective cults were never so unfathomably cruel, and she never knew anything else.
At least for my own first game, though, my Durge recognized that without her "sister," she'd have never gotten the chance to save the world, never met Shadowheart, never stopped a century worth of Ketheric's torture on Dame Aylin, never set in motion the liberation of the Githyanki...In the right world states, Orin unwittingly saved the world, but it's a world she'll never get to see or know, and probably never could have.
That's tragic as hell.

Obsessed with The Dark Urge just being...unsettling.
Like in those first few weeks of travelling, they're just...weird. Just overall unsettling to be around.
They likely can't remember their name, so they just come up with one on the spot that definitely sounds fake. Like they just looked around and saw a tree and went "I'm branch"
Or they're literally just "I'm The Dark Urge" and someone will point out that's not a fucking name.
They get...weird about blood. Always coming out a fight more drenched in it than they reasonably should be. Their hands shake like they're on some sugar rush. A splatter will land beside their mouth and they'll just...slowly lick it off.
They just say odd shit. "I've always wanted to smell my own burning flesh" and cue the side eye. "im only ever truly happy when I'm killing" and "when I first met you, I thought you'd make a perfect pretty corpse," and don't always seem to realise that what they're saying IS ODD.
They don't smile. It's like their face wasn't meant to sustain a smile. So when Astarion or Karlach makes them smile or laugh it's the most painful and awkward fucking thing ever. Like someone drew it on upside down.
They are not put off by the smell of burning dwarf.
I love the idea that being a Bhaalspawn, one made my Bhaal himself there's something...off with their appearance. Maybe they have sharper teeth than what their race usually has. Maybe if you're close enough to them and stare hard enough you realise oh their eyes aren't dark brown they're red. Why are they red?
And then. There's waking the camp up at night with the sounds of screaming. But they insist it's nothing.

Ok, so, I think we could receive armor from Bhaal if we accept the ritual like Orin's clothes, but not exactly her armor but something of our own, something that our character as Bhaalspawn used before Orin's betrayal

I LOVE it when people headcanon their Durge with weird animalistic traits.
Durges who are just creatures of impulse and instinct
Durges who growl and bare their teeth when they're angry
Durges with claws and fangs without need of a weapon to tear someone's throat out
Durges whose eyes glow in the dark
Durges with heightened senses
Durges who hiss when they're annoyed

The Dark Urge Companion AU - Reacting to Astarion's attack
TW: Lotsa blood, Neck Injury
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You thought I was going to have a comic about Gale's hand, did you?
Ha. I'll get there. But, you guys have been asking for it. I wanted to do a comic on how the Durge reacts to the player being attacked by Astarion in Act 1.
Previously: Chapter 1
Next: Chapter 3

Rolan: You know, if you ever get tired of adventuring, you could always come work at Sorcerous Sundries.
Durge: I don't think retail is the right career for me. My rancid blood desires nothing more than to reap death on this world. I am a vile soul, broken beyond repair.
Rolan: Sounds like an average Tuesday around here... We do have an annual employee picnic, though.
Durge: Does that help to soothe the unyielding rage within?
Rolan: *Sad sigh.* No.

I know people tend to forget Wyll a lot in this fandom (I wonder why. What Could Possibly Be Different. Can you spot the difference?/s) but I'm genuinely surprised at the lack of Durge x Wyll content. Especially if you're going Redeemed, there's that inherent flavor of "My lover cannot know the truth, I am horrible and they would hate me, they would be correct to hate me." And with Wyll it's just... so juicy, he's so pure and shining, and Durge is so filled with filth and misery that there's barely a person left underneath.
Idk, as a femme romance reader I've spent so many years reading the "love redeems" arc where a FMC plays beauty to an MMC beast, in every genre, medium, budget, etc. I'm not here to yuck anyone's yum, but beauty and the beast as a story structure has never done it for me.
until it's reversed, apparently, because Wyll as the beauty to Durge's beast needs to be injected directly into my veins like yesterday. All the other companions are good and sweet, don't get me wrong, but their reactions are coded like 'i accept you,' where Wyll to me comes off much more as 'we will heal you.' He doesn't have any funny little quips about you trying to bite him, no innuendos, no "I Will Put You Down" a la Laezel, he's just... so good, and he believes in your inherent goodness, he so easily sees "you" and "your urges" as wholly seperate entities he would step between if he could.
Speaking of which!! The coronation scene, when everyone finds out you're Bhaalspawn? I never see anyone talking about Wyll's reaction compared to other companions getting angry (even Dark Shadowheart will yell at you) because Wyll seems to be the ONLY PERSON who immediately separates you(the person he knows) from you(the person you used to be). Astarion isn't angry, he even appreciates your scheme freeing him from Cazador, but he also kinda falls into the whole "I will talk to you as if you are the exact same person who did these things, this is Your True Nature and I feel positive about it."
Wyll's reaction feels like the only one saying "You WERE that," instead of "You ARE that." It also feels like the only one that kinda-sorta acknowledges Durge's actual amnesia, because he doesn't treat this revelation like a betrayal the way the other "good" companions do. They be saying "The real evil was hiding within our ranks all along" like wym hiding? Durge didn't know either, how tf they supposed to tell you?
Wyll doesn't even blink. Once he knows what you are, his No.1 priority is reassuring YOU about it. The fact you're Bhaalspawn isn't a betrayal; it's a Horrible Burden and he's sorry you have to bear it, but there have been others like you who were good, who overcame, and your blood isn't who you are. His first instinct is to offer hope, to reassure you that there's a way out, he believes so hard that your urges are a defeatable enemy and he's ready to fight them with you.
(I also fall into the Durge And Gortash Fucked camp, and I cannot overstate the tastiness of Durge waltzing into the coronation of their ex, the Worst Man Alive, while bringing along their new boyfriend, the Best Man Alive)
Idk, I've just never engaged in a romance where I played the part of the Beast. As much as people rag on pure, princely archetypes, I don't actually see them that often. I genuinely don't remember the last time I read/saw a male lead behave like Wyll, but I've seen plenty of Astarions, Fenrises, Rhysands, etc. Romance loves a fixable MMC, but so rarely an MMC who wants to do the fixing.
Anyway. Justice for Wyll or whatever. I can only cross my fingers that future DLC will include more romance content, because we all deserve to have a Beauty for our Beast sometimes.
