tw transphobia, murder, rape

In 2020, there was a murder of a trans man in my country that hit the headlines.

He lived in a dormitory where his neighbours knew him for years without even suspecting that he might be not cis. He was just a dude to them. Just a man that lives nearby with his wife. Someone you say hello to when you meet them in shared spaces. He worked as a janitor. Probably they also knew he had some sort of criminal background.

Then they found out he was trans. He slept with one of the neighbours and she spread the news.

Next day he was raped, mutilated and violently killed. His wife found his dead body covered with blood, with his binder ripped and pants down.

Tell me now, why was he killed?

Was that because his killers suddenly saw him as a woman who failed in womanhood? Have they mistaken him for a trans woman?

Or was it because to them he was a man, but not man enough to be alive? Because he was violating the core rules of cisnormative manhood which was enough in their eyes to punish him with death?

Transmisandry exists. And we need words like "transmisandry" or "transandrophobia" or whatever to address this. The oppression of trans men can't be reduced neither to transphobia nor to a byproduct of misogyny because it is shaped by the fact that trans men are men.
