I really hate when fans say that if Bruce had not taken Jason in then Jason would have died young and homeless. Saying that still makes Jason a prop in Bruce's story.
The other option I see is he would have just become a criminal. Even Bruce himself says that in the UtRH movie. Alfred called says he was dangerous in the comic. But come on, were talking about the kid that stoped a crime ring at his school before he was ever robin. Were talking about the boy who died trying to save the mother who had just betray him. Were talking about the character who's moral compass is as strict as batman him selfs. He wouldn't have just become any old criminal like Willis or any of the Gotham Rogues.
No, you know what he would have done? He still would have become Red Hood. Maybe by a different name because the name Red Hood is tied to the joker but I still think he would be doing the same thing. He'd look at the neighborhood that he grew up in. He's look at the system that repeatedly failed him and his family and he's say "I'm gonna fix it." Because thats really what he's trying to do in UtRH (the comic more than the movie). The system in place in crime ally really isn't the government that gave up on them but the criminal empire. He would see creating his own gang as a way to help his city.
Even without Batman, Jason Todd was destind to be a hero.
Pick your preferred version of events. Era: Jason has survived his showdown with Bruce in Under the Red Hood. He has not yet reconciled with any of the bats.

Alright, I know Tim’s a lil’ stalker gremlin with Dick, but hear me out. He never realizes Dick got replaced with Jason until Under the Red Hood (or your more than likely better than canon hc/plot happens) and while Bruce, Dick and Alfred are understandably upset, Tim’s just sobbing, “I CAN’T BELIEVE BRUCE REPLACED YOU!!!”
I will never forget how Jason in UTRH blatantly played therapist between Joker and Bruce
I know his ass knew there was something goin' on between the Joker and his foster dad

Well I read the UtRH comics and now I’ve got more feels to use for the Kit Eternity and Jason Todd friendship in my fic/s with the added comparative angst of BOTH OF THEM BEING MEANT TO LIVE
Like… both were to live and survive what happened to them, but someone else’s hands (Kit was Capt. N*zi and Capt. Marvel, Jason’s was the readers themselves) forced fate the wrong way until it was fixed. Kit’s heavenly fix by, y’know, God and Mr Keeper while Jason got brought back messed up by Superboy Primes punch to undo a universal level screw up.
I’m so adding this to my boy out of time idea for Kit, omg I love this
You can fight me on this, IDGAF, but "I'm not talking about killing Penguin, or Scarecrow, or Dent, I'm talking about him. Just him. And doing it because... because he took me away from you." is one of DC's most perfectly crafted short monologues ever. It sums up a whole character in a few, simple lines. It sums up Jason's motives, hopes, and pain.
I believe that Jason is 100% fixated on Bruce/Batman during his return as The Red Hood. Other characters are incidental to him during this conflict, and that includes Tim and Dick.
Of course, fic that focuses on relationships with those two will increase their relevance. Maybe it's a Titans Tower fic with Robin; maybe it's just a greater presence of Nightwing during Red Hood's rise to power. In fic, the actions that Tim took in becoming Batman's emotional support sidekick, or Dick beating the Joker almost to death that one time become incidents that can defuse Jason's anger and intentions on revenge/forcing a confrontation.
That wouldn't work out with my understanding of the characters. For one, I don't think Tim or Dick are inclined towards stepping back and calmly explaining a situation with big pleading eyes (at the very least Red Hood and the bat would beat the shit out of each other first.) More importantly, Jason's a fucking determinator, and I don't think he can be swayed from his mission.
I have fun reading fic that explores the worlds where it is that easy. It's just that stories that keep each character's interiority and sense of determination (pick a bat that ISN'T overleveled in sheer stick-to-it-ness) are a lot more interesting.
